  • Walther's Super Chief is now complete. Here's a run around my layout. Its a light version of the prototype, I couldn't afford an ABBA set, so I'm making do with an AB and 10 car consist.

I watched this video a lot as a kid wishing I had a Super Chief and all sorts of bridges and whatnot to run it on, long before I appreciated the amount of work it took to make all of this. Its very nice and calming, and a huge part of why I love the Super Chief so much. Great video and great layout.

You can not imagine how much I wish to had been riding on board the original train. Unforttunately in its glory days I was not born yet. During my early and mid childhood the train became a fallen flag. Actually its successor is THE SOUTHWEST CHIEF, still running part of the original route.

Great looking layout! I like the use of the proper whistling (i.e. three short, for reverse; two short, for forward). A-a-a-a-a-a-ll aboard!!

Great prop scenery. Almost looks real with the train moving along the tracks. On some angels you would never know that's a miniature train with fake scenery.

@jamcgar Thanks for your compliment. My layout is actually quite small, 12 feet by 18 feet but I've packed quite a bit of detail into it. Filming it in closeup segments gives the illusion of greater size I guess. As for the sounds, I use audio clips of actual train sounds and dub them in at appropriate places. Its fun to try and give the video more realism.

@lailasalas I'm glad you enjoyed it. Nice to know that parlor car may be restored in Golden. I'll have to make a trip there to see if it that happens before I die. I've ridden the Amtrak Chief so at least know the route it took. I just bought a video with vintage films of the various SF passenger trains.

SUPER video! Great camera angles and composition....you'd think it was a much, much larger layout....I was thinking it must be some club layout! 12' x 18' is still a good sized layout! Thanks for posting and I subscribed to your videos, too.

Actually the layout is only 12x18 feet. The train set was bought over a period of a year. Walther's released a car each month. They averaged around $60 per car and the locomotives were $400. I'm in Ogden, Utah. Also a member of a large model train club called the Hostlers. See our website at Hostlers.org

Are you talking about the #34 on the front side? That is the locomotive number or road number. It is used for identification in the timetables and the locomotive's place in the railroad company's roster of equipment. It is tied to date of manufacture, purchase and type of locomotive.

Does anybody out there know how to interpret the parts diagram that comes with this Walthers F3 loco? There seem to be diagrams of some bits and pieces that aren't actually in packs inside the box holding the loco.
Come on Walthers. Smarten up and make an effort to better explain how to put the bits together. We're not all experienced pros.
This will be my last Proto2000 product as I constantly get this lack of explanation from Walthers. Let's see.....Athearn, MTH?

You must not have ridden American passenger trains. Being under a slow order seems to be more the rule than the exception. Plus the fact I like to be able to see the cars go by and not just a blur on the tv screen.
