You Might Lose your Active Developer Badge!

- Discord is changing their Active Developer Badge to make a bit more sense. Instead of being able to run a command once and have a badge forever, you may be forced to run your discord bot every 30 days.
This video not only updates you on the Discord active developer badge, but it also shows you how to get the active developer badge using methods that will hopefully turn a normie into a developer.
Let us hope this is the last video about the Discord active developer badge lol.

imagine people accidentally becoming actual rookie developers to "fake" the developer badge. It's true beauty
That'd be cool
Unfortunately we all know.. nobody will become a dev, even if they added unique challenges to get the badge some weirdo is gonna post a full tutorial on how to get it
If people were to actually put forth the effort to become a developer, then we truly wouldn't have to worry about it being in the wrong hands. Unfortunately, most people aren't like that, and their lack of empathy for the hard work of developers shows.
faking it would eventually get old and the badge would do what it would be supposed to be doing
That's actually how I got into web development. I wanted the developer badge when it first came out and discord took it away a few days after I started working on my own bot. I didn't know anything about coding back then but I stayed because I liked it. I now develop custom bots for fun 😂
@@tomikun8057 yeah
Honestly, coding your own bot in Python is worth it. It's a fun little project with, or without the badge, and it's one of the things that got me into coding.

@@AlexFlipnote O.o , developer cameo.

It might be. I'm just more familiar with Python.

I am deeply saddened by this major loss that has affected every single user on the social platform discord. I might have not gotten the badge myself but this has rendered me utterly unable to continue using discord. This is very much not okay discord 😔

As a developer, I am more than happy for this update. I do wish that they just got rid of the permanent badge and had it so there should be a constant 30-day expiration check, but it is what it is.
Also, I am not mad at this video. The fact that he shows a somewhat legit way of getting the badge (which is by running an actual bot) is something that is nice. I do wish that the developer badge either made people get into programming or was just exclusive to developers, but nonetheless, maybe someone might actually start programming Discord bots from this, so compared to having it given to everyone, this is far better. Hopefully all tutorials in the future on how to get it will start with downloading an IDE and a full-on playlist of how to code a Discord bot.
+
I still do wish it was restricted so people that just don’t code don’t get it.
@@exo_7536 yeah true
@@exo_7536 I agree. Most people are mad when you mention something like that and they go on to use the excuse of "its just a badge" or "why are you so mad," and I guarantee you that these people don't even understand our side. This is the second time a platform I was developing on released a "price" for hard-working developers that was snatched by random users and deprived of its value, the first one was Roblox, in which not only did people exploit to earn items, but this in turn made part of the program shut down, which meant that I was unable to obtain the price myself (originally, only the game owner received the price, along with a form to fill out names of other team members so they earn the prices too, but due to abuse, they shut down the "other member" checking), and since all my projects are team projects (or at least under a group that is not directly owned by me), I do not receive those prices.
Regardless, although I would love for it to be restricted to programmers only, this sadly cannot happen with some extensive checking or verification feature that would require a dedicated team for verification.
the api team themselves have said, it's not about gatekeeping, it should be about inclusivity! the badge is intended as a way to try to encourage people to get into bot dev. even if comparatively few people go the whole way and learn programming, that's a win for the community in my book
Something which I don't quite understand is why the eligibility for the bot has to be slash commands. My bots are mainly used to create notifications for Twitch/RUclips, and handling role assignments through reactions. The only command that my bot has is to restart it if I changed something in it's code, and it's not a command that I use more than perhaps once every three months or so.
just add a command that makes it say hi or something funny
@@pogpogger9497 See, I could do that, just for the badge's purpose. But my comment was more of the purpose that it doesn't make sense to only provide the badge to developers of bots that is actively (read: once a month) being used with a slash command. They could instead just base 'activity' on how the bot interacts with the Discord API for example sending messages.
It's quite simple: They are still planning on the great api refractor that makes it so only slash commands can be used to interact with discord.
its probably the only way they can track if your bot is doing something, or to incentivise people to add slash commands instead of old commands
Slash Commands are bad
Damn, this makes me actually want to be an active developer and automate the 30 days slash commands
Automating slash commands is against Discord ToS I believe. That is because it will require you to automate a non-bot account to execute the slash command. But I doubt they'll detect something that is activated so infrequently.
@@KillFrenzy96 I’ve had my dank memer farmer self bot running for over a year and they don’t care.

it's not about python being weird, the "python scripts and pip path" are too long sometimes or missing at all
to fix these 2 issues, you have to:
1. add the paths to system environmental variables
2. disable path limit (to allow longer path links)
Or you can use "py -m pip..."
If im not wrong
@@debargha0_0 The -m flag is used to run a module as a script. AFAIK if you want to "use" python at terminal without writing the full python path, you must add python to the PATH

@@YoussefRashedElox I would recommend using something like JavaScript or Python for making your bot instead of Lua. While there are Discord libs for Lua they are no where near as feature complete, or as well documented as those for JS and Python.
@@moykun5643 you don’t cause the whole point of badges is to earn them
I honestly suspect Discord looking out for a certain Amount of Bot Activity to let users keep the Badge since this is basically an easy Keep for the badge which i do not think Discord Necessarily wants it.
I highly encourage People to learn coding and try new things out. And coding a Bot for discord is a good start to get into things.
It doesnt have to be complicated
But it highly Helps
My advice would be to use the lazy method, then create a custom command (such as "hello world") and run it every two weeks or so, on a private server.
Youre doing very good videos, and its awesome. Im thankful
This is pretty cool. I've always wondered how botw where made. I kinda wanna make one now for myself.
I have some mixed feelings on this update, one hand it's a great way for developers who didn't get the Verified Bot Developer badge to have some kind of badge, yet a lot of people who have no knowledge coding can look like they know how and can mislead someone.
Tip at 4:44 if your like me and don't have the "open terminal" or PowerShell option, in the folder do ALT + S then ALT + F and then either ALT + R for regular PowerShell or ALT + A for PowerShell with admin privileges. This isn't the exact same as the regular terminal but for this use it works perfectly fine, you might also just want to be using visual studio code or PyCharm and simply running without debugging as you most likely are using them to edit the file anyways.
at first i was just getting the badge for fun but know its interested me into coding and i might try to once i get my pc fixed!

Hello there! I know why you sometimes don't get the "Pip" command working! You have to customize the python installation and check some boxes saying something like "add to file system" "file system" "file" "command" "cmd" or "terminal", and it will work.

The reason why your pip install doesn’t work sometimes is because you need to enable the windows extension and paths while installing Python. Don’t install Python twice, the only reason why that works is because the windows store version installs the extension and paths.
You could also just make a python script that acts as a windows service that starts the bot and logs into discord in a headless browser and send the command itself

I have a bot for my personal use and seeing that it requires slash commands to get makes me disapointed in a way.
Guess I'll have to actually implement slash commands 😔
It's best to migrate your bot to slash command,
It will give you some experience on slash command if you wish to make a discord bot for public
And its not so hard todo, its mostly just copy and paste
slash commands are easy once you have made a couple of them
Just get rid of normal commands and only use slash commands.
It's not hard
Personally as a developer, I’m very happy for this update. However instead of just showing people to run a script every month, you should’ve teached people how to code their own discord bot from scratch. It would have inspired many more developers to come at discord and would make the badge less common and more meaningful.

I Love Hearing He's Voice In The Very End, It's Cute
Yo NTTS what is that sick extension or theme that makes your tabs look like that? Do you know if it's available for Firefox?
If you are not good with computer, I would not recommend doing it the "coder" way, for safety reasons, but if you want to do it that way anyway, here are some more advice:
1: DO NOT use the link in the description if it doesn't end with a big sequences of numbers and letters,, it may not be the one that NNTS have checked. You want to add "/tree/53514fcb65383c190516318e237b350b4fd7555a" at the end of the link, (I would add the full link if I could, but my comment is filtered out because of it)
The zip file you'll download will not end by "master" but with that big sequences of letters and numbers instead
Why ?
The link on the description (if it was not edited after this comment) point to the last version of the code, if the account of AlexFlipnote is compromised or if AlexFlipnote want to become malicious, the code on the repository will be update and MAY NOT be safe, the link I've put in this comment point to the version shown in the video: the version that was verified by NTTS. So you can trust it the same way you trust NTTS, it will not have the latest updates, but at least you will be sure that the code you will run have been checked by someone you trust.
The link on the description may not be checked on every update, using it is not an assurance that you'll use the version shown in the video.
2: If pip doesn't run, you may not actually need to download Python from the Windows store, this may be because of one of the following reasons:
A: you didn't check the box "Add Python in PATH" during installation, so Windows doesn't know where to find pip
B: you did checked the box, but for an obscure reason, the PATH hasn't been refreshed by Windows when you opened the terminal, this may happen, in that case, restarting your computer will probably fix this issue without installing another version of Python, if it doesn't well, first of all, welcome in the great world of programming, secondly, install it from the windows store.
Some explanations:
What is the big sequences of letters in number in the link i've provided ?
That's the commit hash of the code shown in the video, a "commit" is just a fancy way to say "version", adding this number will give you the same version as shown in the video, there's no way for it to be modified in a way that will make it malicious
What is the PATH?
It's a big list of directory that Windows will look for program you want to run, if a program is in the PATH, it can be launched from anywere on the computer juste by typing the name of the program in a command line
Why bothering writting all of this?
Making that badge safer to have to anyone that may want it, and help to bother Discord

I've been kinda interested in coding for a while now and this feels like a great excuse to finally get into it, but I do have a potential problem or two
I've seen someone make a custom bot for an inside server joke before, there was just one command that gives a random output, but it's hardly ever online and I think I remember mention of having to pay? I'm not sure how it works so I'm hoping someone with a bot of their own can explain how keeping them online works
and secondly, the dumber problem, I have no idea what I'd actually wanna make a bot for
I have motivation, even enough to try learning how to code in the first place, but no ideas, especially if the above issue is actually an issue
(sorry for the kinda lengthy comment, just hoping to find some answers from people smarter than my average google search result lol)
for the first problem, in order to make your bot constantly online you need to host it in a server. there's alot of hosting servers and some even let you use it for free (may or may not require a credit card), or you can just make use of ur pc and run it 24/7
second, seems like you play tetrio. how about you make a bot for tetrio oriented stuff, they have a public api so maybe you can create a command for getting user's data and display it using discord's embed or something like that
@@RedStone576 1. How does hosting it on your own pc work? (I don't doubt it does, I think that's actually what the other person I know did, I'm just unsure how hosting works)
2. I don't actually play tetrio all that often, but I do upload to YT every day and I have a Discord server I share the links in when I do so (despite pretty much nobody caring lol), is there a way to make a bot that automatically sends a link when a channel uploads?
