  • George Foreman vs. Muhammad Ali, billed as The Rumble in the Jungle, was a heavyweight championship boxing match on October 30, 1974, at the 20th of May Stadium (now the Stade Tata Raphaël) in Kinshasa, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), between undefeated and undisputed heavyweight champion George Foreman and Muhammad Ali. The event had an attendance of 60,000 people. Ali won by knockout in the eighth round.
    It has been called "arguably the greatest sporting event of the 20th century" and was a major upset, with Ali coming in as a 4-1 underdog against the unbeaten, heavy-hitting Foreman. The fight is famous for Ali's introduction of the rope-a-dope tactic.
    Some sources estimate that the fight was watched by as many as one billion television viewers around the world, becoming the world's most-watched live television broadcast at the time. This included a record estimated 50 million viewers watching the fight pay-per-view on closed-circuit theatre TV. The fight grossed an estimated $100 million (inflation-adjusted $500 million) in worldwide revenue. Decades later, the bout would be the subject of the Academy Award winning documentary film When We Were Kings

    Once foreman said in an interview that thought to knock ali out within 1 or 2 rounds but when at third he hit ali and he fell on him ali said: "george is that all you can do? show me something!" In that moment he knew he was in the wrong place with the wrong person.
    Ali was simply astonishing

    This was the greatest moment in all of sporting history. Foreman was undefeated and considered the most fearsome heavyweight in history and Ali was supposedly past his prime. Yet the great man pulled it off using the most unlikely strategy and people talk a lot about Ali's attributes as a boxer, but he also had the heart of a lion.

    The other thing I want to say is how calm and open Ali was with his team in the dressing area after the fight; hugs all around. Genuine smiles and eye contact. Imagine the elation and pride they had in this great man and he returned a lot of love to them. Then as soon as the lights were on and the the press conference began, there he was - Ali the showman, feeding the press with quotes and headlines. But the Ali locking eyes with Ferdie Pacheco, and in that briefest of moments acknowledging between old friends who had been through so much together - we knew this would happen - and Angelo Dundee shaking his head in wonder at Jim Brown - that’s the Ali I will never forget.

    The class that Ali had was incredible. This fight was an exhibition in boxing and how Ali mentally broke down Foreman. Remember this was not the young Ali. He was deprived of 3 of his best years due to refusing to be drafted. Watch some of his fights before his being banned. He was the fastest heavyweight ever, by far. His dance combined with his incredible ability to avoid head shots enabled him to out-box, and later KO, larger opponents. The young Ali would have toyed with Foreman, or Tyson for that matter. Or even a young Joe Louis, whose speed was nowhere near Ali’s.

    I watched the full fight again this week, which I do at least once a year. Foreman looked like he was set to go in round 5, but somehow stayed on his feet. Credit to George for taking a few tremendous Ali right hands right on the button. Then in the break before round 8 Joe Frazier was asked and he said “It looks like George ain’t gonna make it”. What a great call. Then round 8 looked like a copy of round 5 with Ali fighting out of the corner in the final 30 seconds. This time he stood Foreman up with a left hook and followed with a brutal right hand that ended the fight. Afterwards Ali wanted everyone to know he was a better boxer - “I’m a pro” - and that he kept telling Foreman all through the fright - “You don’t know how to box”. What a great performance by Ali.

      @@davidfairbairn8 Ali was hit with one shot at a time. And then he grabbed and clinched. He did not take Shavers best punches. What knocks out top contenders and champions is getting hit with a series of punches .Punches that land back to back. Ali was never hit with several punches at a time because of his ability to grab and hold his opponents all through a fight. Ali took a good one punch from Shavers here and there in the fight. But he did not take Shavers best punches. Ali’s ability to take a punch is vastly overrated. If Ali had been hit by Shavers the way Ken Norton was hit by Shavers with punch after punch after punches in consecutive order. Ali would have been knocked out too. Shavers through over 30 blows at Norton in consecutive order without Norton trying to hold before Norton went down for the first knockdown. If Ali had been hit like that he would have went down too.

      @markeith k I mean yeah doesn't matter how tough you are, you get hit too many times you're going down. The fact that Ali could take a good one and not get hit the second time was a testimony to his toughness. Like Ron Lyle said "so many people could take shots, but Ali was the only one who could take a good hit and still come back at you strong". Unfortunately, Norton and Frazier were not like that.

    Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) was truly one of the greatest boxing champions. In addition to such a great fighter, he was also a colorful personality with a great sense of humor. Ali boasted about many things, but humbly stated that when asked the question 'Who would have given you the toughest fight?' Ali admitted that Rocky Marciano 'would be the most trouble'. In another interview, Ali admitted that Rocky Marciano probably would have won. Ali had a great respect for Marciano..and even said 'Marciano and I were good friends' It was reported that Ali cried when he heard what happened to Marciano, who was killed in a plane crash. Ali is one of my favorite fighters in boxing history..as a fighter and a great personality! Take care

Ali had the fast hands but then he went to the ropes, nothing magical. George was like a zombie. Not trying to take anything away from Ali he is the goat. Ali was the ultimate defensive fighter. After being battered for 8 rounds, Ali delivered the combination that sent Foreman slowly sinking to the canvas, completely defenseless. Ali had the opportunity to deliver a killer last punch but held off, to his great credit. After this fight Foreman was a changed man, a much better man, freed from his hatred of Ali and willing to accept defeat.

    • @5star64
      @5star64 Год назад

      Not true at all. Foreman took years to lose his hatred for Ali. After the fight Foreman complained that he was poisoned. That he was the victim of a quick count. And the legitimate complaint that the ropes were loose allowing Ali to lean his head out over the top rope and outside of the footprint of the ring and away from Foreman’s punches. He demanded an immediate rematch. But there was never going to be a rematch. Ali was to smart for that.

    • @dratz50

      @@5star64 Here's what Angleo Dundee said about the ropes - "I thought he (Ali) was crazy with his 'rope-a-dope', lying on the ropes while George hit him. People thought we had worked on it as a tactic but no. They were saying I'd loosened the ropes to let Muhammad lean back. But I had gone round the ring tightening them and they were still loose as a goose because of the heat.". The insinuation that Ali's camp loosened the ropes has been debunked many times before.

    • @5star64
      @5star64 Год назад

      @@dratz50 Of course Angelo Dundee was going to say that. Do you think Dundee was going to say I loosened the ropes on purpose so Ali could lean his head back outside the footprint of the ring and away from Foreman’s punches. A year later in the thrilla in Manila. The Heat was far more intense but the ropes remained tight throughout the fight. Compare the ropes from the two fights. Since when does a fighter’s trainer get to set up the ring. That should have been the job of WBA and WBC officials. The ropes were ridiculously loose. It was the heavyweight championship of the world fought in a WWE wrestling ring. Foreman was exceptional at cutting off the ring. So there were going to be times when Ali was on the ropes. The loose ropes helped Ali tremendously. That along with excessive holding and clinching wore Foreman down. Ali put his gloves behind Foreman’s neck and pulled his head down every few seconds of every round. That’s what tired Foreman out. Not the so called rope a dope. The only round where Ali laid on the ropes and stayed there was the 5th round. You can see clearly that the top rope is so loose Foreman’s head punches can’t even reach Ali’s head. I believe in a legitimate boxing ring Ali would have been knocked out by George Foreman. And that’s why Muhammad Ali never gave George Foreman a rematch.

      Ali survived that round and the fight because Angelo Dundee loosened the ropes the day before the fight allowing Ali to lean his head back and outside the footprint of the ring and away from Foreman’s punches.

      @5star64 2 года назад +1

      @@mandolindleyroadshow706 Of course he has. He has mellowed with age and accepted what happened. But watching the fight for historical and documentary purposes it is painfully obvious that the ropes were not only loose but were below standard height. Which is across the lower shoulder. The ropes were a few inches above the waist line and well below shoulder level which allowed Ali to lean his upper body and head well outside the rings footprint and away from Foreman’s punches. Compare Ali on the ropes in Manila in the Frazier fight and all of his other fights with the Fireman fight. Announcer Bob Sheridan mentioned during the fight that Ali’s trainer had spent the day before the fight putting the ropes together. That is suspicious. It seems like the sanctioning bodies the WBC and the WBA officials should have been in charge of the ring set up. Not the challengers chief second in the corner. And Ali never gave Foreman a rematch.

    • @mandolindleyroadshow706
      @mandolindleyroadshow706 2 года назад +1

      @@5star64 Yes, Dundee later admitted he loosened the ropes. He also said he didn't have confidence his fighter could win which is why he fought for every advantage. Dundee did not know Ali would employ the rope-a-dope. No, I'll go with Archie Moore's take on the fight. "Ali was too rounded in boxing to be beaten any one way."

    • @5star64
      @5star64 2 года назад

      It helped Ali that Angelo Dundee loosened the ropes the day before the fight. That allowed Ali to lean back over the top rope and have his head outside of the footprint of the ring making it difficult for Foreman punches to connect to his head.

    Ali was a great champion and even better person. When Ali fought Lyle Alzado, defensive end for the Denver Broncos, in a exhibition match in 1979, I had to go see it. I ran a drug and alcohol prevention youth program at the time. Ali was my hero and I thought I would take a chance and was able to reach Ali's training camp and told them about the problem and asked if Ali would give me tickets to the fight. I took 25 young youth and 5 counselors in our school bus. When we got to Denver Mile High stadium there were tickets from Ali for us. If your thinking why I didn't ask the Broncos for tickets since we were from Colorado, I wanted them from Ali and we were mostly Raiders fans. Lol

    Muhammad ali foi generoso até dentro do ringue, pois depois de levar uma saraivada de golpes, ele poderia vingar de George Foreman no momento do nocaute, porque ele teve tempo suficiente para deferir pelos menos dois a três socos no adversário, mas ele queria apenas ganhar a luta e não massacrar seu oponente; por isso Ali merece o respeito de todos os conhecedores da arte nobre e é digno do respeito até mesmo de todos os seus oponentes, ele é sem dúvida alguma o maior pugilista da história, com todo respeito aos demais, porque além de grande boxeador, Muhammad ali tinha um coração digno de um sentimento puro, ele foi extraordinariamente superior a todos os seus adversários, até mesmo o George Foreman admitiu que ALÍ foi o adversário mais leal que ele conheceu.

    This is unadulteratedly a very strong example of why. Younger men should never underestimate an older one. Even though Ali wasn't that old at the time in chronological years. However, in boxing years, with all the pounding and brutality involved in it. He was a little past his Cleveland big cat, Williams. Nicolas brothers, Baryshnikov, Fred Astaire quintessence of splendor that he once was. But his hands were still lighting fast. And more sturdy and stronger due to age and the chopping down of trees and other strength training over the ensuing years since then. Along with his somewhat heavier frame, he started to realize how much better a punch he could take. Which eventually culminated in his demise as a fighter. But on this night, along with everything else that brought him here, it was just what the doctor proscribed because that chin was like granite impenetrable to anything that mean old scary monster Foreman could muster,,ha hahaha. .God bless that giant, and I hope he's somewhere reminiscing with all the great artists of the sport like himself. Men like Jack Johnson, Sugar Ray Robinson, Willie Pep, Kid Gavlin, Sugar Ramos, Jack Johnson, Hector Camacho. And the other cavalcade of grandioquent greats that once laced on the gloves and found fame and fortune because of their magnificent 😅.
