- The main question you have to ask yourself when researching this swap,
“Do you go with a fuel cell, aftermarket tank or do the TJ fuel tank swap?”
First I changed out the hose inside the fuel pump, you DO NOT need to do that and you should not do this either. If you do... make sure you put a clamp on the top end of the hose or it will come off.
I am not going to go through the tools for this swap, if you are thinking about doing it, you should have the general knowledge of mechanics, have standard and specialty tools, a welder and knowledge concerning fabrication and some common sense.
I hope you enjoy the video, it is VERY Labor intensive and takes days or weeks to accomplish. Be Prepared for things to go wrong and life to get in the way.
In preparation for One Ton axles and Long Arms in a Jeep Wrangler JKU many Jeepers choose to move the stock fuel tank from under the passenger side to the rear, either in the cargo area or such as this video explains, under the cargo area where the stock muffler is. This video will help you determine if this swap is for you and general guidelines for performing it with the equipment in the video.
There are many ways to do everything, this is just one way. Use this video as a guide not as the only way or the correct way. Ask questions if you get stuck and do your due diligence research first.
This may work on other vehicles, this was performed on a 2009 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited and had previously moved the Evap Canister in accordance with a video also listed on this channel.
This video was roughly based on a How-To write up by Riley Harshman posted at itsajeepworld.com/jku-to-tj-f... Авто/Мото
Great video! The newer TJ tanks have a locking ring like the JK pump. No trimming required. I’ve also upgraded to a heavy duty skid by Rokmen Off-road. Same process and modifications to make it fit. 🤙
Thanks! I couldn’t find a newer one. It was a fun little project
excellent and helpful video, thank you!
Thank you
Thank you for the excellent video. I’m performing this mod myself right now.
Outstanding, good luck 👍🏼
Interesting. I never use that pit that seems to collect water. Easy fuel tank access would be far more desirable
Exactly
Semper Fi! Still got that CB ya bought off me? I’ve been back in Chicago since I retired in 2018.
I do! Semper Fi
I'm trying to figure out what the swap is for when both gas tanks have the same capacity of 20 gallons. That's if you do the modification on the TJ gas tank that says it's 20. You just got to cut One of the hoses inside the tank to extend the capacity
The long arms get interfered with by the stock passenger side tank. This eliminates that issue
Hi, you might want to take apart one of those heat shrink connectors as a test. I found that the solder was not going through the wires. It's more of a very weak compression joint VS a true solder joint and it's much weaker than a crimp connection.
I am wondering if it would be possible to move the tank higher if you have a body lift?
Great video!
Thanks.
I’ve been running it without issue since I installed it. You can put a fuel cell or the tank in the cargo area. Body lift might work to, I’m not a fan of body lifts.
No worries, thanks for the comment.
@@ItsaJeepWorld Were you still able to bolt in the hitch?
Thanks again.
@@ifster7273 nope
Hitch went away
I don’t tow with it
I have a TRX for that
Currently doing the same to my ‘07 . I have the floor cut out already. I made a bolt on cover out of aluminum with a rubber gasket to give it a nice seal. I’m striking out trying to find a ‘05-‘06 tank. Did you go with a tank from an ‘03-‘04? Any check engine codes?
No check engine codes. Getting an 05-06 tank makes it much easier
No need to replace the hose inside the fuel pump. But if you do, clamp both ends of it
Good luck. I’ve had no issues
Does the tj 2005 - 2006 fuel tank gas fit to the jk 3.6 from 2012 to 2018 ?
The tanks are the same for JK 07-18
The space for the tank where the muffler currently is, is also the same. It should fit the connections may be slightly different to the Evap and other lines, I’m not familiar with the 3.6 setup. But as far as fitting in the space, yes.
I am in the process of doing this modification and one thing I am running into an issue with is the TJ skid plate hitting the rear track bar. Did you have this issue and if so, how did you address it?
I dual triangulated my long arms and a track bar was not required. I also do not run a rear sway bar. Is it hitting or rubbing?
@@ItsaJeepWorld Oh no, I wonder if I skipped over that part. Moving the tank as far back as possible it rubs, but then I run into the issue of having room for the filler hose.
@@JarodThompson-pq7sm I had to make a custom filler hose
@@ItsaJeepWorld I will be doing the same, but the actual location of it on the tank is hitting things. Sounds like I will have to do some more cut to fit.
@@JarodThompson-pq7sm yea, fine tuning
So your not able to run a rear sway bar when doing this swap right?
You still can. I chose not to. You have to modify the sway bar mounting point
@@ItsaJeepWorld I seen someone use the anti rock with the TJ rear tank but I’m already balls deep in the Dana 60’s im putting under my jeep. I think I’ll try to relocate the stock one and maybe get some adjustable end links
@@caseystokes4019 I think it’s adding blocks to the mounts not necessarily relocating it
Is your fuel level gauge off at all?
Not enough to cause trouble
I fill at 1/4 tank I’ve never had an issue
@@ItsaJeepWorld ok, so 1/4 is basically empty?
@@jeffdaigneault4284 Sort of 1/4 is about 5-6 gallons left of 15 for me more if you have a 20 gallon tank
