It's the same with sea kayaking. When landing on a beach it is advisable to ride the back of the waves and keep the bow up. Surfing wave fronts will cause perling, bury the bow, and put you abeam to a breaking wave. That's not a good place to be. These guys are skilled and experienced. Job well done.
Okay...well that was well handled by the skipper but nothing more than a daily average bar crossing. If you want to see really serious bar crossings there's plenty online. Like Greymouth for example on the west coast of NZ where the local fishing fleet crosses a seriously dangerous bar (they are all potentially dangerous) for a living.
