The ending is actually the result, in a way, of a studio error. When they received the original script, which included the "box" ending, the studio rejected it as too dark and commissioned a new version which changed the ending to something a bit more action-oriented. But when they sent the script to David Fincher, to see if he'd be interested in directing it, somebody screwed up and they send him the original version of the script instead of the revised version. He agreed to do it, but was told by the studio that they wanted to go with the revised version, which didn't interest him particularly. Fortunately, he was able to bring Brad Pitt in, who was considered the main box office draw for the film, who, having also read the original version of the script, told the studio that he would drop out if they changed it.
The way Pitt tells it, he called up the head of the studio and told him that, the way he saw it, there were two choices. Go with the revised ending and produce a film that ends in a pretty generic action sequence, that'll probably do alright at the box office, but that nobody will really remember in a few months time. Or go with the "head in a box" ending and create a film that might not do as well at the box office (although, in the end, it pulled in over 320 million dollars on a 33 million budget, which is a success by any standards) but that people would remember for years to come. The studio head made the right choice (although they continued to try, mostly unsuccessfully, to water down the ending even after filming), resulting in a film that's rightly recognised as a noir classic.

but the ending doesn't make _any_ sense. doe (spacey) allegedly has been planing/doing all this for _over a year._ but mills (pitt) and his wife are only in town since _recently._ so, how exactly could doe have anticipated, that the cop being after him would have anger issues, a beautiful wife and that he would envy him?
i mean, good for them that it was successful ... but at the end of the day that's only, because most viewers don't really think about how stupid the plot is.

The "Pride" murder worked like this: John Doe cut off her nose. He glued the phone to her hand and told her that she could call for help and she would live, but she would be disfigured. He glued sleeping pills in her other hand, saying she could take the pills and end her life. She chose to end her life, rather than be disfigured. Forced contrition, atonement for her sin of pride.

@@chrisschweitzer5558 Most likely, very hard. Movies tend to have a tendency to exaggerate everything, including human failings and sin.
Movies, and art in general, tends to have a cliche narrative of "we, humans, are the reals monsters and not worth saving etc", excepts that actual research, generally shows the opposite.
Maybe you could find someone who would kill themselves eventually after a while of being disfigured and not finding any social support, but immediately after a traumatic event?
Human survival instincts are extremely strong, so I doubt it, it takes a lot to kill yourselves (there is a reason why a lot of people who kill themselves where under the influence of drugs, usually alcohol, beforehand).
But hey it served the narrative of the story.

The killer doesn't shoot him, and it's almost as if he was face to face with the devil himself, and in saving his own life he condemns his wife and baby without knowing it. Mitigating circumstances are not a defense. People being acquitted for crimes they commit because the jury feels sorry for them is something that happens in fiction, like A Time to Kill. Murder is murder; most people who intentionally kill another person think they have a pretty good reason to do it, and they don't all go free because of it.

Such as he beat her and she snapped, etc. There are also temporary insanity cases, etc. It is very plausible he'd not receive a murder charge, because lets face it- the police, DA and the general public would be on his side. Despite the credo, justice really isn't as blind as it thinks it is.

At 9:45, Mills didn't actually 'read' the books because he was too frustrated in trying to understand them. He discretely has a co-worker find and bring him the CliffsNotes versions (the black and yellow covers) which are study guides that simplify all of the details. They're very popular for students that need to read complex literature for assignments without having to actually digest and retain all of the information. So, essentially, he 'cheated' to impress Somerset.

Mary, I might be a broken record, but if the plea is out for movies that might affect you like Seven (not that one wants to go through this every week, but for a rainy October day…), then I recommend Seconds (1966). Psychological Thriller; film techniques ahead of its time; emotional journey; inevitable total-nightmare ending that can’t be anything else.
Anyway, great reaction to Seven. I didn’t think you would watch this film, given the you of last October, so - it’s cool, because you’re watching good and interesting films that are hard to watch. I have a tough time watching Horror and scary Thrillers for the first time, too. It’s not knowing where the scariest, or goriest, parts are, that is so dreadful.

My head wasn't right for at least 3 days and it took a few years to realize why. The impact of this movie is made not just from the amazing acting or the twisting storyline but from the realism. The story that Morgan Freemans character tells to the captain about the guys eyes getting stabbed out just nails home that every bit of this movie could easily be and probably has been at some point, very very real. It really fascinates me how integral Detective Mills is to John Doe's plan, more specifically Mills' personality. His constant up beat attitude, his desire to make the world better, to never give up on people, he had to be a good person for John Doe to envy him. If it was only detective Somerset on the case, John Doe never would have someone to envy, and his entire year long plan wouldn't have worked.
Makes me wonder, was John Doe somehow behind Detective Mills' transferring to this exact precinct?

Unlike the typical zombie movie with excess gore and standard plot, this South Korean film was an international hit, with multiple character development (making you empathize with them), a very good main character arc, a great performance by a child actor, social commentary and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. Even skeptical zombie connoisseurs (to whom it was suggested to view it) loved this movie. Your patreons probably don't know of this excellent foreign film to vote for it, so you might consider viewing this.

This movie is about the futility of justice. It's very nihilistic. John Doe wins in the end. He completes all seven of his murders, dies and becomes infamous. The part that gets me the most is that the only time they ever get ahead of John Doe, when they find his apartment, they do it by breaking the law.

Hi Mary, I almost skipped watching this reaction because I had already seen this film and this is a tough one to watch. I am so very glad I watched your reactions and comments for Se7en . I agree with everything you were talking about.... when I first watched this film I was also screaming at Somerset to lie and make something up . This felt a lot like my first time I watched Se7en and it took days for me to push this film out of my head .
I do have an enormous amount of respect for the people involved with this film.... my mom got me watching horror films when I was about 6yrs. with the old Dracula and Werewolf black and white movies to start with so by the time Se7en came along I thought for sure that I would have no problem after seeing most of the Friday the 13th movies and Texas Chainsaw movies.... Se7en would be cool. To me this film was as far from cool as possible .
The graphics alone do not make this an easy to watch film but the ending as expected as it is.... still feels like a gut punch. I do see that the ending would not have been as impactful if Somerset would have just lied and they walked back to the car but Mills would have still seen the box once they were back at the car and most likely still would have killed John Doe either way . This is one of the very few horror movies that actually make me cry . I am very glad you did a reaction and commentary for this film and I am very glad I watched it . Thank you

Excellent reaction. You are a hundred percent right about most films having an emotional climax followed by a simmering down period of 5 or 10 minutes. That simmering down period is called the "denouement." It happens in "Seven" as well, but it only lasts about 10 seconds. It's like John Doe achieves his goal, throwing the audience into emotional pandemonium, then we see Mills in the back of the police car, Somerset saying he'll return to the job, and a little Somerset voice-over narration suggesting he thinks the world is still worth fighting for (Fincher wanted to remove the VO at the end, but someone at New Line wanted to keep it so there would be just a sliver of hope at the end). Then we are left with just credits and David Bowie to comfort us. (BTW, the end credits descend from the top of the screen down, as though even the filmmakers themselves have abdicated salvation).
Fincher has describe going to see the movie at a theater with a regular audience. He said at the end, a couple of ladies stood up and left. On the way out he heard one say to the other, "The people who made this film should be killed." Well, at least he knew it was effective.
In terms of tracking the beats of a movie, you've gone from self-professed neophyte to film scholar in just a matter of months. Suddenly, I'm remembering all the debt I've incurred from film school. Hmmm...
Anyway, If you enjoy crime dramas, I would recommend another David Fincher helmed project called "Mindhunter," on Netflix. It's a series that dramatizes the real life formation of the behavioral sciences unit of the FBI. It was established primarily by two detectives and a psychologist who did their research by interviewing real-life serial killers who were in prison. The show dramatizes this, so the killers are played by actors, but the scenes are absolutely riveting and terrifying. Definitely worth a peek.
