I bought an MX49 last year. It's a pretty good edition for a gigging rock keyboardist like me. I own about 10 keyboards, and wanted a 49 key keyboard to keep on the side of my two 61 key synths I keep out front to replace a very old one I used before. I sold my MOTIF ES rack and replaced it with the MX49. I'm glad I did. On songs where I want MOTIF sounds and need 61 keys, I simply MIDI it to my other keyboards. I've been a huge fan of the Korg M1 for a long time and use that is one of my two controller keyboards and for the M1's internal sounds. I'm mostly into software synths these days for lead synth & organ sounds. The MX49 is a nice edition. Being only 8 lbs is great for practice & traveling. In one of my bands, I setup an old computer running all software synths with a 61 key controller keyboard and I simply bring the MX49 to practice and use it for the built-in soundcard instead of setting up my other one. I use a single USB Midisport to I can connect two keyboards. For this band's rehearsal, all I have to bring is the MX49, connect a couple wires and that's it. The 61 key MOTIF keyboards are fairly heavy, and who wants to drag them to rehearsal? I play live and don't use sequencers or do recordings directly on my keyboards, so why pay for those extra features? I bought two (very expanded) M1's so I can leave one at home and one with another band. MOTIF's seem even heavier. I use the MX49 as a controller keyboard often too with VST synths and for it's internal sounds. I've also gone to rehearsals with just the MX49 (a little difficult for bass notes, but depending on the song I can do it). I've even plugged in my 25 key tiny Oxygen 8 controller into the MX49 using the MX49 sounds for both keyboards. Very simple, ultra portable practice solution. My regular rig has a lot of wires to hookup too, mixer, etc and it takes time just to connect it and disconnect it. The MX49 sounds are pretty good. Like the MOTIF ES, XS & XF sounds, their are still plenty of sounds they don't cover so great but their are plenty of good ones. I also make use of the 1/8" input jack for connecting my iPhone to run software synths on that, and playing back MP3 sounds. No mixer needed, very nice. In combination with other keyboards or software synths, I can highly recommend the MX series. Very affordable too.
Hi n8goulet, not sure if you'll this but since you bought one could you tell me if it has drum set patches? I've seen keyboardists hook up their piano and play rhythm into a looper, so I was wondering if I could do that or if its just the "performances' he demonstrated in the video. I kept reading the product description and it said 'percussion' but I just wanted to be really sure before I buy it...thanks for your reply in advance!
I'm in the process of learning about all the amazing things you can do with a midi keyboard controller and I had to login to say how much I enjoyed this demo. Blake has such an easy-going vibe--he's like an old (very talented)friend who is really hyped about a new keyboard he just HAS to tell you about, lol. I actually watched the entire thing. He's an OUTSTANDING teacher as well as a great musician. Anyway, thanks much.
What's cool is that the Concert Grand is a sampling of the 9ft CF3S Yamaha, a $150,000 piano for $499 MX49 . Obviously it's not the same as a real piano but a heck of a lot better than the sound I got on the Korg Kross which sounds like they found it in Bodie, CA ghost town under a dust pile.
Really cool demo: I enjoyed it from start to finish... Blake, thank you so much for your enthusiasm! As a musician I appreciate your great talent. As a teacher and trainer I appreciate your great communication skills. Very well done!
Yamaha redid the Keybed on this instrument recently w the release of the MX Bk/blu series. The keys are now a matte finish and feel much better.. Best action I've encountered on a light keyboard.
Very nice description and demo Blake. I did not buy an MX yet, but your video has me on the buying edge. Your enthusiasm for the product is great, and I like how you interpreted that enthusiasm into a well organized description of the MX + Cubase integration features.
This video just convinced me of what I needed to know. I've been on the hunt for a 61 key synth/keyboard that has great sounds for performance and works great with software as well! Thank you Yamaha and Kraft Music!!
Finaly found good and usefull Demo! You just got 3 points: for excellent music skills, for interesting comment and for using awsome music device. Keep going, good job!
I've never ever seen a more convincing video :) I was looking for exactly THAT kind of thing - a fine, capable instrument with a set of great presets & with the inborn computer-connectivity for to start with - as an amateur. Liked your fine, moody tunes of your own as well!
Great vid, concise,no faffing around, real cool tutorial.I tried to get to grips with cubase some time ago,as well as sonar, fryed my head, gave up.But now I have time and peace in my life, you sir have inspired me to get back on track thank you.Just bought this monster because of the computer side of things, along with my jdxi and my Gaia synth I will be able to ramp it up to11,and rip the knob off in no uncertain terms THANKYOU ,and now for some serious noodling, take care, great stuff,Skullduggery EDM.
John Gengelbach I don't have much in the way of me being filmed playing(there is some segments here and there)...but mainly...most of my videos are of my music(with film and video game footage)...you can see them if you visit my channel.I also have another channel under the name; MiddleEarth0069

Fantastic prof-play and reklam very too!!! Thank-you very much for fantastic reklam!! And very very dears in corporation in Yamaha too!! I`love you everybody!!
You always make these videos enjoyable to watch, regardless of whether the product is good or not so good, I happen to like Yamaha, still have my MU90r from way back when, for some reason, have not bought a new Yamaha Synth, this would be a good option for me, I just wish they would add aftertouch to their cheaper synths. Thanks for a really great demo. Cheers - Andy
I'd love to see a manufacturer make a 61- or 76-key weighted keyboard. When I had a 61, I rarely ran out of notes, but I did not like the action. I know you buy smaller keyboards for portability, and the weighted action goes against that, but it might be a good middle ground. It might also be a good complement to my DGX-650.
Can I upload my DX-7 sounds into it? that's basically most what I care about, looking to upgrade to new keyboard and load my own sounds I know montage can do it but its so heavy, expensive and I won't use 80% of its functions. YAMAHA?
man i just love that little jazz improvising lick that he did at the time count of 13:53 all the way to 14:04... sick... those are chord movements that i truly love hearing and i can say that becuz i am a musician myself lol
I'm just play for for fun I really enjoy playing the piano its my hobby. I retaught myself how to play over a year ago. Im at a level I can play my favorite songs. I played when I was young. I lost interest many years ago I have the time to play now.
each day i love more acoustic instruments or electro-acoustic...This new wave of digital instruments dont has the creativity of the really instruments..
I downloaded to my computer it's tricky to use. I'm not familiar with the program. It took a while to get my computer to recognize my mx 61. Im still learning I've just been playing the keyboard with out my computer hooked up.
Great Demo. Thank you so much. I am somehow unable to integrate Cubase AI Elements 6 with my Yamaha MX49 :(. I have installed the latest Yamaha Steinberg driver V1.9.9 from the website, however the driver doesnt show up in the driver control panel OR cubase software. Can you please help?
I thought the main difference between a keyboard and a synthesizer was control. They both can have presets, but with a synth you can not only completely edit presets to your liking, you can also sculpt your own sounds from basic waves from the VCOs (tri, saw, square, etc). This seems more like a (good) keyboard. Am I wrong?
I love the sound of this keyboard and all the great features, but not into Cubase at all. Why, I purchased a ZOOM R24 that came with Cubase 6 SE that came with it. It was too complicated and didn't work right. I go PreSonus Artist 1. 2 and it was intuitive and worked properly.
I got well disappointing when i learned that you basically have to live with the MX audio interface taking over as your main interface - asked a guy in the store that told me the "audio interface" was only to send audio to the DAW... but you have to run the MX as your main interface to do so, meaning i got no headphone amps, have to change interface while recording vocals etc... all in all, just as easy, if not easier to just record from old Motif as an instrument when needed... so just because i wanted to record Motif audio straight easier things just got more complicated/inconvenient :(
Hi Blake, 2 questions: Other than the FM Essential app, can the MX88 keyboard control other iPad synths such as Korg Gadget through the same USB input and have the audio come out through the MX88 as well? Also, do the DAW controls work with Logic/Digital Performer/Protools besides Cubase? Thanks!
You’re explanations are very good! So, can you offer some advice? I’m a sax/ fiddle etc player who can get around a keyboard a bit but not bothered about the cube base etc. I openly cheat! So, for example, is it possible to sequence a boogie-woogie patten with the left hand and play live with the right hand? Regards
You don't need an extra/external audio interface - Yamaha MX can do both -> yamahasynth.com/ask-a-question/can-i-use-the-mx49-or-mx61-as-audio-interface-for-piano-vst
@TheDukeofJuke Incorrect, as the keyboard has it's own internal interface, you can record the audio from the keyboard directly into your computer and use it as a controller via the very same usb cable.
How can i play just a single patch on a single midi channel using this as a sound module and another synth as a controller? seems these sounds are spread over several midi channels. just wanna use one nice single channel/voice bass patch on it for an existing sequence? can't find this in the manual anywhere. set the basic channel to the one to match the part on the sequencer, but no sound comes out. this is basic stuff but the manual goes into zero detail. thanks in advance
Hi Blake, thanks for another excellent review. I almost decided to buy Yamaha PSR (970 vs 770) series music synthesizer until I saw this review. Wow, Blake Angelos really knows how to play enticing stuff and bring out the instrument's capabilities!
Best ever presentation (to me) of a keyboard ever whether from Alesis/Roland/Korg/Yamaha/Kurzweil. Thanks!

"When I look over here on the left" - he points to the right hand side. LOL Nice review though as always.
I immediately noticed that as well.😂

Does it work well with UVI Workstation / Neo Soul Keys 4.0 ?
Superb explanation. Thank you very much. 😍

I got the mx61 used so it didnt come with cubase and the other stuff I just wanted to know if you could record things in the mx61 without a daw
I dream with the same integration for logic pro x :(
May I know how to get the *.ins file instrument definition for Sonar?
ótima escolha.
Great Demo. Thank you so much.

how about you show us how you recorded the performance into Cubase! It would truly help
Just ordered me a 49. Now I dont have to take my motif home from church to practice.

Nice

How do you Connectet the Piano with cubase?
Hello Sr. Need help. Can I use it with Ableton Live Suite???
How do you save a custom performance to memory?
can you dual two sounds like an electric piano and concert piano and then split it with a bass? or it wouldnt let it?
Hello, can someone help me in storing the tones in an order or in the 16 registers on the panel.. Please help..
can i conect this yamaha with other interface perhapse through the midi in and out ,so the other interface be the main source??
What is plugged in to the Device input?
the Cubase jam sounds like fun loving criminals

Hi Blake, thanks for another excellent review. I almost decided to buy Yamaha PSR (970 vs 770) series music synthesizer until I saw this review. May be you can help me to decide between MX 61 and PSR. Which one is better in terms of sound quality and ease of use. My main interest is to create and play back music tracks.
which one has a numerous synths? Electro 5/ FA 06/ MX 61? thank you
does this have keyboard touch?
What’s the difference between the MO and MX?
You have hooked me on this synth besides one thing: are you able to change the part tuning of individual parts?
how to bank my patches on dis one???
Can it do FM sounds and modelling like the DX and/or Montage? Because I don't have enough money for a either and the Reface is too small.
I'm looking for deals on the mx 61, any ideas?
This better than the Motif xf series?
dan nay gia bao nhieu vay.?
Hi. Is this the MK 1 version?
how much is the keyboard stand you are using?
prefer my FA06 as has 512 user studio sets [ perfomances ], mx61 only has 128, and 512 user patches and for me that large no. of user memorys is a deal breaker for me as i program a very large no. of these studio sets/patches of my own
Interesting thing is that an organ manual/keyboard has 61 keys, hence the name of this keyboard synthesizer.
Can we use a other software that cubase for this yamaha? i use ableton and i want to know if i can take this piece and if he's absolutly compatible with this softw. big video :)
I'd like to purchase one of this after watching this video...But I've got some need 2 ask you...Could the MIDI Audio integrated inside the MX series replace the MIDI Interface ? I'm the beginner and I don't know it so much. Thank you
What amplification are you using?
Will this work with Logic Pro x
Why does it have two power chords?
what soundsystem you are using this video sir?
Does it work with GarageBand??
What's the cost?
$479
how many?
Believe it or not I cannot find the actual "Download"button of FM Essential app anywhere
I have tried all this in Cubase 9 and it doesn't control anything. It's so frustrating!
