15 years ago I was a confused high school based in China, I listened to this album day and night. It dragged me out of the teenage dark hole. It helped me make few friends who love NIN too. It inspired me to make the desicion of pursuing a music career. Then I went to the US music school when I was 27. Finally watched NIN live in boston, and it was still so unreal for me. Now I am a professional composer. My life wouldn't be like this without this album. It encouraged me to become a better person.
Thank you so much for sharing this. It brings back my memories. 😭

This album was my introduction to NIN. As an immigrant, I was just getting into this type of music. Manson was all over the airwaves, and Sept 1999 I saw Trent perform "The Fragile" at the MTV VMAs. A couple weeks later when the album was released I took the risk and bought the double CD. First song "Somewhat Damaged" caught me. So much rage. so much anger. So much beauty.
I spent the next few weeks digesting this body of work and today I still claim it as my favorite NIN album. From then I worked my way backwards into the NIN discography.

Hi Ixi, your passion for music is contagious, you've inspired me to revisit the NIN catalogue, especially this album.
I've only seen them once many years ago and at the time i wasn't really into them outside of singles but i'll always respect Trent's integrity.
At the gig, between songs, he told us how disgusted and pissed off he was when he found out how much the label was charging for their cd's.
So he told the 10 000 or so in the crowd to go out and steal the album and that he'd rather we got it for free, than line the pockets of the label exec's.
Was funny, but he made a good point.
Keep doing your unique thing Ixi, it comes across as fresh air across the stagnant pond that is most youtube content these days.
Oh and thanks for the 90's nostalgia videos, just the album art in the thumbnails was enough to bring the memories running back....
back when albums were consumed as a whole body of art.

I recently revisited this album and I think it might be one of my fave albums of all time in terms of composition and production. The Fragile was the biggest album anticipation moment in my life. I was in grade 12. Heard about it early, watched all the teasers, VMA performance, everything. Got TDTWWA single when it came out. I even skipped school to go buy it on release day, because I couldn’t wait until after school. I loved it from the first note. Listened to the whole thing first time. Quite a journey. Helped expand little 17 yo me’s musical horizons. Not actually a huge NIN fan anymore, but they (he) had a very big, lasting impact. I still listen from time to time, mostly out of nostalgia.

The Wretched and Just Like you Imagined are tracks that burned out the quickest for me, back when I first heard the record in high school. Even Deeper, Into the Void, Ripe (With Decay), and Somewhat Damaged are my favorites (10 Miles High if we're counting all Fragile era releases). I'm always fascinated to find out people's favorite.

You want a common motif? Water. This is the album he was contemplating suicide by drowning on. Sinking, spinning, arms of undertow, the great below, adrift and at peace. Just imagine how scary and tragic it would be if this was his last album ever.

    • @brothadarrell8315

Pretty Hate Machine is like air. His debut on the airwaves, air is thoughts we send out to the world. His message is definitely being stated in Head Like a Hole and Terrible Lie. Something I can Never Have is my favorite. It's a thought being sent to a past love. Broken is fire. Full of anger and a feeling of happily burning. Hate especially towards TVT records. The Downward Spiral is Earth, material world, drugs sex depression everything the Earth can deliver bringing on suicide. And like you said, The Fragile is water. Emotions. Loved how he used the sea as a metaphor for death in The Great Below. Songs flow and drift in this album.. Drowning and also songs finding their shape inside of us like water filling different shaped cups.

I was in grade 6? 7? hearing The Day the World Went Away as the first single on the radio was ... there was no song like it on the radio in 1999. Huge intro, some words in the middle, a whole outro. So good. You never heart a song like that on the radio, like, ever. How that was picked as the first single i so bizarre and so awesome.
I remember staying up late to record We're In This Together on tape (my friends and I would record songs off the radio all the time). The DJ said the song was coming up, ended up coming on 30 or 40 minutes later, oy. I waited forever. But I pushed PLAY and RECORD and I captured it.
Ended up buying The Fragile shortly after, it was the first CD I bought with my own $$$.

To me, We're In This Together and The Fragile are a perfect representation of a doomed relationship, especially when taking into account the story of The Downward Spiral. This person was never able to fix themselves, but now he's in a new relationship and he thinks he can fix her. He's building her into his perfect untouchable porcelain doll and building a wall around her to keep everyone else out, and we know it's not going to work, and of course it doesn't even survive the end of disk 1. I know The Fragile is not really a concept album or story to the extent that TDS was, but at the least those two tracks seem to fit into the same narrative.

Sorry I missed most of the stream. Specially since The Fragile is my favourite NIN album. I fell into NIN because of the intro of SE7EN. As a graphic designer, the intro really fascinated me, and set to that alternative take of Closer really helped in that. I loved TDS as soon as I had a listen to it. Again, as a graphic designer I loved the way Trent played with sound layers, and juxtaposes colour and texture in the album. In my mind, this was akin to what I was doing on the page. To me, Trent was doing sonic graphic design.
But this was somewhere around 1995-1996-ish, so I was a bit behind other fans. When I really got into loving the band, The Fragile was pointing it's nose. The Fragile was my first NIN album bought as it came out. Many would follow. The soundscape of the album consolidated what I felt with TDS. And, lo and behold, they also brought the most influential graphic designer of the 90's aboard to design the packaging: David Carson. That sealed the deal, Trent is, at least in my head, a graphic designer playing with a different set of tools and canvas.
To me, Trent was at his peak maturity musically when he did this album. I feel "The Fragile" is "Led Zeppelin IV". It's "Dark Side of the Moon". It's the album that galvanizes a band, a musician, that masters his craft.
Once again, thank you Ixi for indulging us in this pleasure.
p.s.: I thought your reaction at 1:25:09 was because what you played sounded like "Find my Way", from Hesitation Marks... It wasn't, but I think it should be noted!

It took me many years and hundreds of listening sessions to conclude, that NIN's The Fragile is the best music album of the 90's. And I don't mean best rock or whatever music genre album of the 90's but best music album of the 90s across all genres. Without going into all the details, I say so because of the lyrics, complexity of composition, incredible layering of the sounds, unique musical style that cannot be classified as any clear genre, and for many more reasons. I'm not in a position at the moment to elaborate more or in a more coherent way. But I will stand for this statement until I discover any other album of the 90s that could overthrow The Fragile, which I am highly doubtful of.

@Travis Hogsett There are three bands that influenced me the most and have played a very important roles in my life: The Doors, Nine Inch Nails, Dead Can Dance. Other albums and artists? You say metal I say Meshuggah - Catch 33 being the best metal album I ever heard. I'm not saying best out there but out of all the metal I heard it really stands out from the rest of the scene. Hard to answer a question like this as I listen to so much different stuff. King Crimson is a band I used to like a lot but recently I listened to their discography and realised it is actually not as good as I once believed it was. I concluded that despite the legendary status of their debut album, their best album ever is in fact a 2003 album Power To Believe, which is an album I really like and I strongly recommend. I think King Crimson are best experienced live, especially with their current double drummer setup. I like some artists from the 90's Goa scene like Elysium - Dance for Celestial Being (album), Etnica, Shakta - Enlightened Ape (album). Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals, Killing Joke - Pandemonium, Killing Joke, Hosannas From the Basements of Hell; This Heat - Deceit, Radiohead - Hail To The Thief, Delerium - Karma, Sematic Spaces. I threw a bunch of random and unrelated stuff, hopefully there is something new for you to discover here.

Thanks so much for doing this😎👏🤘
It's my favorite Nails album by a loooooooong way. "...Hate Machine" is where I came in, "...Spiral" perhaps means more to me lyrically but sonically this is perfection for me.
As an long time fan I remeber the original reviews, it did well in the UK, (where I'm from), 5 K's from "Kerrang!" for example, and featured very high on the end of year list for "Metal Hammer". It was also "Spin" magazine's "Album of the Year" for 1999. Opinions on the album seemed to cool off quickly for a while however.
I don't know why this was although as you alluded too, it was apparently a tough album for Trent to write. He was going thru a lot of personal sh*t & perhaps certain songs weren't played a lot live at the time. I seem to remember that certain songs were actually played more the "With Teeth" or "Year Zero" tours but this could be my mind playing tricks on me.
It was also perhaps own worst enemy as it revived interest in "The Downward Spiral", an album which had gone on the inspire a lot of musicians of the time.
I'm so glad to see the album have a mini revival of sorts over the past couple of years however and to find people like yourself & Melissa from NIN_My_Nothing who are as passionate about this album as I am😎👍
Thanks again for doing this & I hope it's still up in its entirety for me to view in full later on in the week😁 (I'm about an hour & half into it now but sleep is calling me back sorry😴)

Just stumbled on your channel. The way you enthuse about music, especially music from this era, is so relatable. Hilarious... I was motivated to comment because I was going to make the Downward Spiral/The Fragile --> Siamese Dream/ MCiS analogy, and you just mentioned it. Subscribed :)

The Fragile... my favorite album from NIN😍. I remembered exactly the first time i listened to it. In 2001, I rented in my small town in 🇨🇵 . In France NIN is not very well known, so i wasn't aware, i knew nothing about Trent Reznor. So Nine Inch Nails sounds german for a french guy, i put the cd and "what the f***😬 !What is this? It was "Somewhat damaged" and i thought "it sucks!" It must be some stupid contemporary musician paying in art galleries for snobbish guys. But there were "the frail" and "the wretched", so it was... quite interesting. And one saturday morning, i played seventh track "Just like you imagined" and it was everything i was looking for. I repeated it so many times, it was and it is such a perfect piece of MUSIC. So i forced myself to go deeper into the Fragile and the NIN universe. And guess what happened? I fell in love with it, and i think Trent Reznor is the musician/ businessman who has the biggest influence on me. What i like the most is the cinematographic aspect of the Fragile, i've always thought one day these songs and instrumentals will be in movies and Reznor will score movie soundtrack...i think iwasn't too wrong... And the live band and the production was so cool...I miss the Fragile era

Thanks so much for remembering me. I hope my last comments didn't make you uncomfortable when i had to take a break from the channel for a bit. I had just gone through a very unexpected and painful break up on top of pretty serious health issues all of which turned my entire life upside down and i figured by the time you had gotten to 'a warm place' i was already getting really emotional so i thought before we start delving into the end of the downward spiral i should sit this section out. Obviously I'm doing a little better and considering the fragile is one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time i had to come back. I'm so happy for you and your success. I did at least manage to do some recording and even recorded my first cover song. It's not nin but i would very much like my next one to be but i just can't decide. I'm leaning towards 'that's what i get' or 'the day the world went away' but there are so many others it's like option paralysis, otherwise i would have done nin as my first cover song. Any suggestions, requests or advice? In any case, fun stream it was nice to come back to and thanks for your channel and just being you.

It's really interesting to see your take on these songs, since you come at things from a more musical / structural / theory-based direction, which is very valuable. I've never been able to play instruments, but love books and writing, so the biggest thing that drew me to NIN was the lyrics. It's really interesting to hear your opinions on "Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally", because you make a lot of good points about its composition in comparison to some of the other more complex songs on the record. I love that track for its lyrics first and foremost. I like the music too, but for me lyrics are the most important part. I struggle relating to the music-first / lyrics-later approach, but I respect it, and am glad that we have such diversity in our listening palettes.

I don’t think any of the motifs you mentioned are a stretch and all are more than probably intentional. Reznor has mentioned on my occasions how Pink Floyed’s The Wall was a giant influence on him . The Fragile is Trent’s The Wall . It’s also a a giant concept double record about self examination with several musical motifs recurring throughout the journey and for extra credit .... it was Produced By Bob Ezrin , Who Reznor hired to come in and provide the final album sequence on The Fragile .

I remember sitting in the corner of my room by myself listening to this album on my CD player on the day of release and being blown away by the emotions of each song until I got to La Mer and I remembering playing it over again 3 times.
I got this weird mixture of emotions from that song and I remember it putting me in a headspace that I realized I had been in previously myself. and I remember thinking to myself "He wrote this instead of killing himself"
Years later Trent said to the audience during a performance that he went to that house in New Orleans both to record and contemplated suicide several times throughout the process. During that dark part of his life he only wrote the one song. Trent chose to live and went back to that house and got married there so that he would remember it fondly instead.
I'm still here myself, and La Mer remains my favorite song.

Edit: I promised to edit this, so here it is - it was fantastic, thank you. %*)

Ohh I've always loved that 'Great Below motif' throughout the album! It's one of the reasons why I rank Fragile slightly above Downward Spiral. It really stitches the whole narrative together.

two of the weirdest facts about this album imo:

    b) it somehow went to #1 on the canadian rock charts

This single was the first halo I ever bought and I was so happy when I heard it for the first time. And then the Quiet version was the next sound and I was even more hyped. I bought Further Down The Spiral the next day now confident that it wasn't going to be cheesy scary voice industrial.

I listened to Starfuckers a lot! It was always playing on MTV/MTV2/MCM (lol). It was in many of my random CD-Rs. I still find it surreal that it took me like 5-8y (the year before Year Zero probably?) to listen to the whole album for the first time. And… wow. It hit so hard. I find it so easy to listen in a loop. Probably thanks to the way it “ends” with Ripe (With Decay).
Also, for A LONG time I thought the jpeg I had of the cover was incomplete, and the red bit was a glitch/artifact of a bad download 😅😂🤦‍♂️

A lot of people dont feel NIN or get it like we do. Its often futile trying to share it with them or make them understand it. Anymore at my age I no longer want to share it. Its mine, my precious. I love this album always have. It can suck you into a depressed state but nothing like self loathing.

1:25:15 The moment you played it, I thought SHOOT it sounds like Great Below. Because you played it on a piano, it was easier to make a connection. And what is interesting is in "Somewhat Damaged" he "flew too high and burned the wings" and then he was faced with what was DOWN BELOW. Very intriguing. All these recurring motives make me wonder, are these always placed there deliberately and for specific reasons, pulling the whole material together? Or is Trent simply repeating himself sometimes in terms of his selection of notes? Very intriguing.

1:51:41 probably my favorite of the album these days.
Used to be The Fragile was my favorite- when I was younger.
"I'm Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally" is probably one of my favorite "off"-tracks of all Trent's work.
That droning bass reminds me of some of the sounds you hear in old Spyro The Dragon tracks. I think I'm thinking of like Cliff Town and Tree Tops... they make great use of those gentle tones.

Really enjoyed this meandering chat on this album.. I'm revisiting the album now... it's so epic (in the real sense of the word not the kid's trendy use of it _ I'm so behind the times!) ... totally forgot there are so many songs on it. really thematic... almost like movements in one piece right? :D And that prepared piano sends my mind straight to Aphex Twin's Drukqs album.

I really liked the album and live DVD. I would say that absolutely the time I found this can say even if you replace his vocals with instrument/s and take it as that holy heck that was some intense music.
I remember high school with with a 300watt JVC system. Between that lords of acid first two slipknot albums plenty of that good old raw street tapes/cds and gogo the lovely music of DC....that album was very Interesting. It's crazy how I just found out Dre worked on a song.

Back in 99, as an elementary school kid at that point, hearing The Day the World Went Away on the radio (as the first single) was fucking amazing. Was so different from anything else on alt rock radio. Good times. It's funny how much The Perfect Drug hinted at how The Fragile was gonna sound like: going from the machine vs organic sounds of The Downward Spiral to the drum n bass, strings of The Fragile.
I feel Trent has always tried to come back to this album. You could probably mix and jamble this album and Hesitation Marks and it will flow, or sound like the same "era".
On a side note, I see some of us are playing revisionists in terms of track listings or what they feel has aged the best. As an older person now than when this behemoth dropped, I can see now how some critics were ... dismissive of some tracks. These are the songs I feel are the strongest, most complete. In hind sight, a lot of the instrumentals from this era (including Still) could have made a great 1st Ghosts album.

The music and lyrics alludes to some of the biggest secrets in the world. "The Fragile", the song, is literally about a incredibly beautiful woman, looking for some ONE. I fell in love with her over time, after they, who are in Air Force, Department of Defense, Defense Intelligence, etc., made me break up with Annie aka Anastasia (the becoming). I had to go through several years of enhanced interrogation during Trump Era, in a room above a laundry room, that shook hours, every day. I was threatened over and over to not talk about Trump, but they wanted me to join the "association", "NSA", and "the company". I had no clue this woman could read my mind and she loved and cared for me. One of the greatest things in life.

    re: we're in this together
There's an interview with Alan Moulder I think where he says he recommended that snare as a joke because it was so cheesy sounding, but Trent heard it in the song and was like, wait, I don't care, this snare is it.
