Music has an influence on people. The issue comes from measuring the DEGREE of influence that it has and to what extent it can be blamed for violent crime in Jamaica or anywhere else. I mean, if you're really interested, you can read a sociology study from any part of the world and see what factors contribute to violent crime. I guarantee that violent lyrics in music are at the BOTTOM of the list. Yet, for some reason, it dominates the discussions on crime in Jamaica.

Mr. Crawford keeps using analogies, referring to research this and research that, those researchers don't know everything, neither do we know everything. BUT we have a better vantage point because we live in this country and we see all that's happening directly everyday, therefore common sense alone can tell us that music DOES have an INFLUENCE on all that's happening. We don't need research to tell us anything.

@@rackeemgordon6272 good point. However that’s the minority when compared to the majority whom in music videos tend to only have guns waving cash throwing a lot of male colleagues and women dancing and nothing else that’s the main point of the majority videos. So while we can’t rule out music videos being so influential we can’t rule out that only a minority of artists has the monitory funding for a graphically well written script to present to the actors to demonstrate what they are saying in songs. But great point I guess at the end of the day we have positives and negatives on both sides however in my eyes the majority does outweigh the minority.

    You are absolutely correct Damion.
If you want to fight crime, you ought to identify the motive behind each crime that was committed. Never in the history of Jamaica has there been a case where criminal admitted that his/her actions were as a result of the songs they listened to. Let’s take dance hall music away, there’ll still be crimes committed. What we need as a country is problem solving skills. Start within our school system.

I can't take anyone serious if they try to argue that music has no influence on people.
Its almost the same as arguing that the drinking of water has no influence in quenching ones therst.
Music is repetition on frequencies with voice over that repeats instructions or a story to a person
If you listen a music long enough that instructs you to behave a certain way while glorifying said actions then it will have some degree of influence on individuals because people typically act from instructions. Our brains are like computer.
Clearly these people have no clue on the power of the subconscious
People most things a person do os in the subconscious

Pree. Art tends to be an expression of ones experiences. Dancehall artists are expressing what they see in society. A sub-culture in Jamaica glorifies violence and glorifies defiance to the powers at be. It may be that the people in this sub-culture have a distrust and disregard for people in power because they have been oppressed for decades. Remember, Jamaica is not poor, it has inequality where the less fortunate are oppressed by the more fortunate.
Hence, artists are expressing the distaste that the sub-culture of defiance has for the rule of law. They are, or at least was expressing rebellion in the past (3 decades ago). Now, that defiance has morphed into admiration of violence and glorification of aggression - and the music follows.

I CLEARLY UNDERSTAND WHAT DAMION IS SAYING HOWEVER , PEOPLE ARE HAVING MISCONCEPTIONS. WHEN IT IS SAID THAT DANCEHALL CONTRIBUTE...IT'S NOT THAT DANCEHALL IS THE ONLY. DANCEHALL IS OURS AND ONE THAT WE SHOULD PROTECT.
KARTEL IS JUST AN ARTISTE AND WHATEVER HE PUTS OUT AS A RECORD, HE HAS TO BE PREPARED TO DEFEND HIS SPEECH. THAT IS IF HE LIKES FREEKY GIRLS..BE PREPARE..HE IS THE BADDEST..PREPARE TO DEFEND IT. NOW THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU ARE PREPARED TO DO WHATEVER HE SPEAKS AROUND THEM. NOW YOU THINK HE CAN TELL A REAL SHOTTA THAT IT'S JUST A SONG. A SHOTTA IS PREPARED TO DIE ANYTIME WHILE KARTEL IS JUST A PERFORMER.NOW CAN HE CONTOL A REAL KILLER ? NOW HE EVENTUALLY HAS TO.BECOME A " YES MAN " OR BETTER BE ABLE TO DEFEND HIMSELF...THE REAL QUESTION IS " WHAT MUSIC W. BOSS LEANS TO ?
WORLD BOSS DOES A LOT OF DIFFERENT SONGS AND HE HIMSELF SAYS HE REPRESENTS FOR THE REAL GANGSTERS. SAMPSON CUT HIS HAIR AND LOST HIS POWER...WHAT YOU ALL THINK ?
WHAT THE MOVIES ARE DOING ITS THEIR THING. LETS TAKE THE MUSIC WHERE IT BELONGS AND WHERE IT SHOULD BE. HOW COMES THE OTHERS ACHIEVE SO MUCH MORE?

If violent music doesn't negatively influence people why do the artists only give shot outs to violent communities and area dons?
