You need to see him performing this live at the Stadium. The performer, Dafydd Iwan, gets quite emotional. He's spent much of his life campaigning on behalf of Welsh language rights and seeing a stadium of people belt his song back to him some 30 years after he wrote it was something very special.
Well done, guys! You chose the perfect video version of this, which is considered to be the second National Anthem of Wales (Cymru). I wish more people reacted to it. Diolch yn fawr!
I left Anglesey in 1973 to join the army, I grew up in a Welsh speaking home and community. I believe that my Welsh is better than some people who never moved away from the area. As I’ve made an effort to make sure that I never lost my language 🏴🏴🏴🏴
Growing up in Cardiff we had zero Welsh literature in schools and no lessons..in High School when I asked if we could learn Welsh I was told it was a dead language..the same for my father and grandfather who were both banned from using the few words they knew
My mum was sent home from nursery and not allowed back until she could speak English. She was from a big family so they all stopped speaking Welsh not to get her in trouble. None of my family my generation can speak Welsh Btw this happened to my family in 1930s

I am Welsh and proud of it. Welsh is also spoken in Argentina. Our nation was built on coal mines and slate mines. Listen to the Welsh national anthem sung in 2016 at either rugby or football matches. Also listen to Tom Jones classics or David Alexander the Price of Coal to understand us. We are a very proud nation but respectful of others. Celtic is pronounced Kel-tic. Thanks for listening to our unofficial anthem.
Dafydd Iwan comes from Caerfyrddin (meaning Merlin's Castle) in SW Wales. He is singing in Cymraeg (Welsh), the ancient Brythonic Celtic language, my mother tongue, still spoken daily by about 650,000 people in Wales (and beyond). I spoke no English before starting school, as our radio programmes, tv and newspapers are in Welsh. West Africa, for example, is Affrig Gorllewin in Welsh. 🏴
hes singing in Welsh and you have English Subtitles at the bottom ;) im Proud to be Welsh living in Cardiff all my life, this song is so powerful to us Welsh folks :) glad you enjoyed it x
I loved seeing YOUR reactions when you heard our LANGUAGE. yes, you heard right, we do have OUR own LANGUAGE. This is our Welsh LANGUAGE national anthem, sing by THE very famous Mr.Rather Iwan. He is known over the world for his Welsh songs. Eng!ish is OUR Second LANGUAGE. It is a beautiful LANGUAGE and the England are finding it really difficult to learn. Of course everywhere in the world can speak English, BUT Welsh is euniqe. Glad you love the LANGUAGE and appreciate the Welsh National Anthem also of course the Welsh singing voices. You do need to listen also to the Welsh Male Choirs, guaranteed you will NOT be dissapointed...enjoy all
I’ve heard and sung this song a million times, but watching your reaction was really moving. This song means a lot to the Welsh & speakers of our ancient native tongue. The message is clear, “we are still here!” #YmaOHyd Cymraeg is still heard in word & song, in Cymru/Wales & all corners of the world. (& beyond 🚀)🏴
I'm a proud Yorkshire man living in South wales this song and the Welsh national anthem gives me goosebumps every time. I completely understand the national feeling of pride in this country, I have the same about Yorkshire. We have much in common with South wales in particular. Wales is a beautiful country with amazing history and scenery like gods own county.
My fathers family came from north Englands mines to the new mines in The Valleys ( not sure how far back that was ) but they settled in the valley next to Aberfan and there’s no way I can pronounce it but I’ll have a go at spelling it ( Trewdderhew) …anyway , Aberfan kids are bussed there for school now since that awful tragedy ……So , I have 4 Welsh grandparents , therefore I AM Welsh and proudly so and I KNOW that our language will endure and I thank EVERYONE involved in keeping that so.!!!❤❤❤🏴🇬🇧
We fought hard to keep our language and you will see it everywhere in Wales. You should look into the history of England vs Wales to understand why its so important to us. Cymru am byth! 🏴🏴🏴
As a Welshman, I am so happy with your reaction. So full of passion almost immediately, throwing your arms in the air just as I have done! Cymru am byth!
As a Welsh women who just moved back to Wales from Dubai. Welsh people are so kind and lovely, such sweet souls to absolutely anyone. This made me proud to be back haha
You have to come to wales we have best flag and anthem in the world and friendly people we have our own language and love singing and playing rugby pay us a visit sometime in the summer is best.🏴🏴
Also, The Isle of Man, in the middle of the Irish Sea, had their own language, Manx. Unfortunately, they now have no native speakers. Cornwall has Cornish, which is reviving slowly. But Wales has the most speakers of the native languages of Britain. They have Welsh medium schools and in the English medium ones, they have to have Welsh lessons every week. Not that easy to learn as it has some difficult consonants, close to Arabic. From Yorkshire, Watch "Dafydd Iwan and the red wall" at a football match, singing.
If you ever come to the UK make sure to visit Wales and take in a Welsh international rugby game. The sound of the Welsh home fans singing their national anthem is something special.
Thank you for featuring one of my country’s incredible song. Please listen to our anthem because it’s beautiful & moving especially when we sing at our rugby matches. It’s called Mae hen wlad fy nhadau. He’s speaking Welsh our country’s national language. You should listen to one of our Military songs to it’s called “I vow to thee my country”
What many people don’t understand is that the colonialism perpetrated from these shores was by a tiny percentage of land owners and rich and powerful men, mostly English. The Scottish, Welsh and Irish were all victims of this, and the English constantly tried to wipe us out. However, most black folk consider all white people to be complicit. Good that you are learning more about this. However, as a Welshman, I have nothing but love for the English. They cannot be blamed for the actions of their ancestors, just as you cannot be for yours. Peace out.
Perhaps another has commented on your post, the fact that there is an area of the Chubut Valley in Patagonia, Argentina, where Welsh is spoken. The community has been there since the latter half of the 19th century. Recently, the government of Argentina passed laws to protect the language, and to promote it. Everyone in the community is bilingual Welsh / Spanish. The area is known as Y Wladfa by the local population, as it is in Wales. There are many towns in Patagonia with Welsh names. The largest I can think of is a port city called Trelaw. (Possibly Trelewis, but I'm not 100% sure about the etymology.) Thank you for posting this! Diolch am bostio hwn. ❤
They are singing in the national language of Wales which is Welsh. English is the National language of England and Northern Ireland. The national language of Scotland is Scottish Gaelic. Wales are a very proud country where the majority of the people love their country and many speak Welsh which has absolutely nothing to do with England but they are British and are part of Great Britain together with England and Scotland. When my late Mother's country of Northern Ireland is added to Great Britain becomes The United Kingdom. The Welsh are well known to be the best singers in the UK plus they have great food just like the rest of the UK, The capital city of Wales is Cardiff which is a vibrant and incredible city. Rugby is the National sport of Wales with Football being in Second place. Even though my surname is Welsh my name comes from the Republic of Ireland as my late Dad and his side of the family came from The Republic of Ireland, but if I went to visit Wales my surname would be a common Welsh surname and the Welsh people would think that I was Welsh or Welsh decent but I am English/Northern Irish/Irish. 💂♂️🇬🇧🏴🇮🇪
The national language of Scotland is English, or variations on it such as lalland and doric. Gaelic is spoken in parts of the Hebrides by a small but proud number of people (of which an even smaller number are 'first language'). Interestingly, Welsh - or at least a slightly older version of it - was spoken across southern Scotland and northern England before English came to dominate. Hence why the Lake District is also known as Cumbria, and why there are Scottish places with names such as Ecclefechan.
@JohnTaylor-cc6tm The national language of Scotland is Scottish Gaelic not English, it's because that the English invaded Scotland and banned the use of Scottish Gaelic, that the Scots were only allowed to speak English by law. The Same goes for the Welsh, the Irish and the Cornish people. You really should learn the true history and not some crap that you read or brainwashed with. 💂♂️🇬🇧🏴🇮🇪 I AM DONE WITH YOU.
Hii..im welsh Rhondda valleys man so proud be welsh..listen to the rugby welsh anthem and welsh Treorchy choir...this why we have best voice in world..lol..God Bless xx

Being a Welsh Lad and having my two girls living up in Leicester when i go up to see them we have a laugh when we go to the McDonald's drive through because they never have a clue what im saying even though im speaking English but with a thick welsh accent they make me go to the window instead of the speaker box😂 🏴🏴🏴
Some of the translation is a little off. There is no mention on England's might in the lyrics. 'Er gwaetha hen Fagi a'i chriw' actually means 'despite old Maggie and her crew' - a reference to Margaret Thatcher.
Great video thanks. It's about survival. We are the ancient Britons. We have been on the island for 2,000 years. Welsh is one of the oldest languages in Europe. We survived and fought the Roman invasion. The Irish invaded(the Scots) and we were pushed out from what is now Scotland. The Anglo Saxons invaded and pushed us out of what is now England. All we had left is what is now Wales. The Vikings came but we defeated them. There were many attempts to destroy us. Ethnic, cultural and linguistic genocide but thanks to our incredible Kings and Princes and courageous warriors and people we survived. We now have a Senedd(parliament), our own universities and Welsh language schools. This was the dream of our last Prince, Owain Glyndwr, one of our greatest heroes. Cymru am byth!😊
The Welsh language is over 1,400 years old, with origins in the Bronze Age. It is Britain's oldest language and has evolved through several stages: Primitive Welsh, Old Welsh, Middle Welsh, and Modern Welsh
Where do you get 1,400 years from? The Welsh Tourist board says "If Welsh can seem complex and beautiful, it's because it's spent 4,000 years evolving." I can't see where people get either of those dates from!
@@nigels.6051the language group is Brythonic and includes Cornish and Breton. The Brythonic languages with variations was the language of Great Britain before the Romans. The people of the island were mainly Beaker People who arrived in Great Britain around 4000 years ago displacing the hunter gatherers who there since the last ice age (about 20,000 years ago) hence the 4000 years of language evolvement. The great Welsh poets, Taliesen and Aniuran (may have spelt those wrong) spoke an older version of Welsh (like Chaucer spoke an old version of English) and both poets lived in the area around the what is now southern Scotland and Northern England. The poets lived about 600AD hence the 1400 year quote. ( and yes a form of Gaelic was spoken in the Western side of Scotland) Brythonic languages were spoken everywhere in what is now England until the coming of the Angles, Jutes and Saxons whose language evolved into English. We can’t say that any European language is older than another because they all stem from the same source, what we can say is that a form of Welsh was spoken in Great Britain long before English evolved.
@nigels.6051 1400 years refers to the first written texts in the Welsh language, which date from around 600 AD, the period just after the Romans withdrew from Britain, the time of the first Saxon (Germanic speaking people) invasions. Before the Roman occupation there was little or no written language in Britain, but of course the spoken language goes back centuries before then. No-one can be sure of its origins, but the Belgic Celtic culture appeared in Britain around 2000 BC, and they probably spoke an early version of what is now Welsh, so that's where the 4000 years comes from.
@ Thanks, the problem with those dates is that they suggest that Welsh was not spoken in Wales before then, but people have been speaking something in Wales since the end of the Ice age around 10,000 years ago, and the obvious language is Welsh. The arrival of a new culture does not mean the uptake of a new language, the arrival of christianity did not change the languages. DNA studies suggest that the Welsh population does date back to the Ice age.
Try and listen to The Treorchy male voice choir sing "Tydi a roddaist". It is a beautiful hymn, and the harmonies are just wonderful. It is very moving.
Just to add - they talk about the welsh language surviving because Wales was oppressed, our language was literally beat out of us as a nation, it was against the law to speak, but people secretly kept it going at home!
PROUD to be WELSH and BRITISH and a SOVEREIGN COUNTRY AGAIN After so many years in a CORRUPTED European Union 🇪🇺 so yes proud to be WELSH 🏴🏴🏴AND BRITISH 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

As a Welsh man. I absolutely loved your video. Wales is a country full history and magic, you will love it here. We are part of the UK but we are not England.
In the British isles there are actually many different languages, though sadly like Cornish some are fading away but the Welsh language is still very much alive. Wales is a very proud & vibrant nation with our own unique cultural identity and history. We're also bloody good at rugby 💪😊. Also on a completely different note because I'm curious , where in Africa are you from?. It's been a while but in total I've lived 5 years of my life, maybe my best five years, in Africa. Mostly Botswana and Kenya, but I've visited 38 African countries. Six months living on the shores of lake Malawi was my utopia but my visa ran dry.

I can't see where people get either of those dates from!
( and yes a form of Gaelic was spoken in the Western side of Scotland)
Brythonic languages were spoken everywhere in what is now England until the coming of the Angles, Jutes and Saxons whose language evolved into English.
You should react to the Welsh national anthem ❤
Try and listen to The Treorchy male voice choir sing "Tydi a roddaist". It is a beautiful hymn, and the harmonies are just wonderful. It is very moving.

They are singing in Welsh, our National language 🏴😊 They have just put the subs in English for others to understand the lyrics 🤍
Just to add - they talk about the welsh language surviving because Wales was oppressed, our language was literally beat out of us as a nation, it was against the law to speak, but people secretly kept it going at home!
I'm welsh born Welsh bred and when I die I will be Welsh dead😊.
