  • I didn´t think the history of disc golf would be this interesting when I started researching this video. You can find the sources I used below 😀.
I hope you enjoy the video!

As every great story this one starts and ends with pies. In 1871 William Frisbie (no joke) started a pie company. And students around the factory in Bridgeport, Connecticut, apparently liked pie. And when they where done with the pies they used to throw the lids around while yelling “Frisbie". Neat, thought William, I can imagine. This throwing of lids went on until 1948 when a plastic version of this flying thing was invented by Walter Frederick Morrison (I know I say "Walter" in the video. I thought that was his name and not Frederick) - The inventor of the frisbee. But at the time it was called flyin’ saucer.
Why “flying saucer” was due to a pilot named Kenneth Albert Arnold who in 1947 said.
Guys. The weirdest thing happened. I saw 9 unusual object flying in the sky. Being a bit of a poet he added.
They flew like...like a fish flapping in the sun. Something like a pie plate that was cut in half with a sort of convex triangle in the rear....or saucer
    like. And the media went.
Yeah we´re gonna go with “flying saucer”.
This got a lot of attention. Afterwards many people started reporting that they had seen strange things in the skies. Flying sacers. Smells like monies here... thought a company and the “flying saucer” was born.
But it had a flaw. Thought Ed Headrick, Steady Ed, at Wham-O. This flying toy, now renamed as Pluto Platter, was mainly marketed to kids. And Ed thought it was time for Pluto to grow up. So in 1967 he filed a patten for the Modern frisbee.
(By this time the pie company had shut down. Put a pin in that tho.)
You know, said Ed and his pal GGeorge Sappenfield. This frisbee thing will pair nicely with golf, am I right? I´ll invent a basket as well. Let´s call it “Disc Golf”. Who actually invented disc golf is hard to and answer but Ed is seen as the father of the sport. And as a father you need patience... And a governing body. One of them, also started by Ed, is The Professional Disc Golf Association. Lets do a lot of different things, PDGA said. And they do. One is the thing about the numbers. More of that in a bit. Another thing is the approval of new disc molds. Because even thought the frisbee was good and fun and all there was alot that could be done to make it go further, for example. So in 1983 Dave Dunipace of Innova made the "Eagle" - a disc that was solely created for Disc Golf.
There´s even more that can be done to the frisbee or disc, said Latitude 64 and other companies like Westside discs and Dynamic discs... I think that´s all of the companies ;). As the sport has evolved more and more now you have putters, midranges, fairway drivers, distance drivers, different plastics, different weights etc. To alter to flight and feel of a disc. So you will have a better time on the course. You´ll have a good time with just the one disc but you might want or maybe need different discs to be able to win a tournament.
And to enter many of them you need a number. The PDGA number. And there we find our friend Ed again who has #1. But he´s not alone. As of now there are over 160.000 people who has a number. This can be seen as a recite of the growth of disc golf - although just a snapshot. And the sport has grown a lot the last couple of years. There´s a lot of people that wants and has tried disc golf.
And if this wasn´t to your fancy. You might enjoy some pie then. A man by the name of Dan O´Connor actually re-launced the frispie pie company in 2016. With the original pie recipe from 1871. Nom nom!

I played disc golf before the baskets. I was invited to play on the first basket course, the opening event. Some old guy was in my group. He was very average. I could many things to complain about the baskets that day. After my 5th or so rant, another player told me to cool it. That old guy was the inventor. Yep, it was Ed. I apologize for my ranting. He said he agreed with many of my points, but their was a patent, and existing orders in the pipeline, so it would be years before anything could change. The baskets today are significantly more reliable and consistent. (Afer 40 years off, I just picked DG back up). Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I am enjoying these videos, greatly.

A video idea: Jonatan (Jonathan? Joonatan?) choosing colours for discs in production and helping around the production line (picking the colours, plastics, molds, choosing stamp colours and applying them). Just some stock discs, nothing fancy, but it would show better how the discs come out of the production line and maybe he'll pick good colours for a run of discs. This might also be an excuse to get some gold burst explorers back in stock. Or clear discs. Or some very close to clear coloured discs. Or extremely bright ones. OOr maybe just Jonatans favourites, anyway more Latitude discs in stock isn't ever a bad thing and at least I'd find this interesting.

one note to your history. Dave Dunipace's first disc that he made was actually the Aero not the Eagle. The Eagle was produced in 1999. It was the first disc with a beveled edge to it rather than the rounded edge like frisbees had.
