Yeah. That is true. This movie was all about publicity over production. Most movies are production over marketing. It definitely did help to have Mattel agree to support this movie.

In my opinion, they did it 50:50
Meaning that they didn't prioritise one over the other

Fabulous brand and marketing strategy- it got me hooked!!! The movie itself was less clever than its marketing campaign imo. This reminds me of an assignment we had in advertising class in college- the professor asked us to go outside and pick out a pebble from the parking lot and then to create an advertising campaign to sell this random pebble for a $1000. He said that once we understood how to do this - we would never see the word the same way again

I wish this video had focused more on the unique ways that Barbie was marketed that made it stand out, instead of mainly just showing examples of brand deals and advertisements, which are super common marketing strategies and thus not as interesting in my opinion. Like, I loved how the movie capitalized on the popularity and viral capability of memes and photo filters, leading to tons of unique, eye-catching, and hilarious user generated content. For example, there was the meme “she’s everything. He’s just Ken” that went wild on Twitter, the photo filter “this Barbie is..” and “this Ken is…” that was used to create content across all social media platforms. Additionally, the Barbie movie had a presence at the DC pride parade in June 2023 and it was incredibly elaborate. There were maybe 50 men and women in neon yellow roller blades and wearing the now-iconic neon spandex outfits. They were passing out pink sunglasses and cardboard fans with the Barbie logo on them. Last thing I’ll mention, which again was an actually new and interesting marketing strategy, was how during the press tour Ryan Gosling would present the interviewer with a pair of pink sunglasses and a canned beverage of some kind that was Barbie-themed. Ryan also was drinking the canned beverage in a lot of the interviews. Oh and we can’t forget the GQ “ten essentials” video that Ryan did AS HIS CHARACTER KEN, which was perfection. Speaking of Ken, there was also the creation of Ken-centric words and phrases that the cast used during the press tour- Kenergy, you are Kenough, Kenaissance, etc. In conclusion, the Barbie marketing team had some really innovative, novel, imaginative, marketing strategies and I think this video did a disservice to its audience by focusing instead on its use of conventional and traditional marketing strategies. I did like that the video at least talked about the Barbenheimer phenomenon, tho I’m not sure that counts since it happened organically (as far as I’m aware) instead of being an intentional marketing strategy. But honestly this comment is mainly so I could gush about what I considered to be some brilliant publicity work, lol. Like seriously, go watch the GQ video, it’s the greatest movie promotion video I’ve ever seen😂🤗

Your comment is a better analysis of the uniquely successful marketing strategy in Barbie than the video itself.

I did not see the actual marketing commercials. I have antenna t.v. The only way I knew about it was through radio, while listening to a mainstream music station.

Its sad because the actual movie doesn’t reflect the fun colorful comedy it’s made out to be with it’s marketing. It was way too long with unnecessary boring side characters/plots and took itself waaay too seriously.
