Love him or hate him he’s one of the greatest player and he’s a legend in my eyes , thank you for making this video I am a big fan of this channel and Mark Selby ofcourse .
Notice the distinct lack of dislike for Selby in the comments here. This content clearly only brings in the snooker fans with a deep interest in the game rather than your weekend warriors who think every shot must be played aggressively or the game is crap. Selby is a genius with a cue and it's very refreshing to see so many people here who appreciate his work too.
I would probably go as far to say that Selby works harder than any other player in the game, I've got a lot of respect for him and don't get the hate that he receives
Love watching Mark, attacks at the right time, but, his safety. He place more importance on a top notch safety shot then any other player. A modern day Steve Davis.
They are _mostly_ textbook though, a video like this is going to focus on the differences! I bet 99% of what they do is more textbook than 99.9% of amateurs!
Excellent observation about his sighting and moving his head. I don’t think he gets enough credit for his technique, it is absolutely incredible how straight he delivers the cue. And what amazes me the most is how many matches you can see his back hand trembling from nerves yet he still pots the balls. He might not be the most entertaining to watch, but for me he is definitely the best post-class-of-‘92 player.
One thing i think you missed on Selby. When he was younger his bridge hand was much further away from the cue ball than it is now. He brought it forward a few inches so that he was closer. And this also happened to coincide with a marked improvement to his long game - which when he first started out was definitely the weaker part of his game. Now of course he is a monster on the table and is probably the best match player the game has ever seen. He doesnt have the flair of Trump or O Sullivan. But his tactical awareness and ability to play under pressure is unparalleled IMO.

Ken Doherty had a warped cue he bought from his local pub for a few quid and aimed by looking at a specific grain down the shaft, not bad for someone who's won a world championship with it
Heading to Idle Working Men's Club in Bradford this evening to play some snooker. If I had even a nostril hair's worth of Selby's work ethic, I'd be playing pretty well! Watched a few other technique videos of yours, very interesting to learn about the small but significant differences between the top players.
Selby has the most patience, grit and determination probably of any player that's ever played the game and I admire him hugely. I'm a Neil Robertson fan mostly and I think Robbo has the most ability other than o Sullivan and Hendry so to hear him moaning about the length of world championship matches this week is embarrassing and I wish he'd take a leaf out of Selby's book.
I am a great fan of Selby and it makes me laugh when people say he is boring and a cheat(Usually O'Sullivan fans). To me he is an absolute animal on a snooker table, possibly the toughest player ever.I would imagine he has won more frames when requiring snookers than any other player.
@@eskertoo whats the thing about him being a cheat? Have heard people complaining without context. Saw people were complaining about his safety game drawing out the matches which is a ridiculous statement to make!
Talking absolutel bollocks! Totally dull and boring 😴 Like his fans!!! Bad for the game,I hear some have taken up watching paint dry after seeing Selby!!!!
@@willquigley Some say he plays extra slow to upset his opponent. But his average shot times refute this. There is a rule which states the referee should warn a player if he takes an inordinate amount of time over his shots'With the intention of upsetting his opponent'.The penalty is disqualification if he pursues these tactics. But Ebdon should have been warned a few years ago against Ronnie when he took 7 minutes to score 11 points. But I always think it's O'Sullivan's fanboys who have a go at Selby because he has spoilt their party on so many big occasions!
Mark Selby gets his haters because the guys a genius and has one of the best safety's in the game and he's very clever. Definitely my favourite snooker player. 👍 Good to see him win another world title and he's back to number 1, courtesy of a Judd Trump loss to Elliot Slessor at the British Open. How long he'll be back to number 1 is unknown but doesn't really matter because he's so good he has nothing to prove.
I just noticed this the other day and I was thinking about looking up his technique and then you made your video. Lucky me. Can you do one about Kyren Wilson, especially his stance?
@@benday1218 i git back issues and I tend to bend my knees a little bit. But I think I can have a better stance, and Wlison is one of thd top players who bend his knees too.
For me, he used to move much more on the shot earlier in his career than he does now. In the last 3 or 4 years you can see the head movement is much less. It was obvious before. Like bridge hands and shot drills, I just take the view that if it works for a particular player then don’t change it for change’s sake.
I might actually try this. I'm also right handed and left eye dominant. And I use to fail on fairly straight shots cause of not cueing straight 🤷🏼♂️ basically it's either cue straight but lining up wrong or line up the shot correctly and not cue straight for me. Best regards from Stralsund, Germany - Robert
Same. I'm right handed and left eye dominant. Sighting is a struggle. Putting my dominant eye over the stick is too unnatural. The last 2 decades, I find myself winking each eye once or twice on important shots to understand the parallax. Now, I sometimes do a small right/left head movement like Mark. If I ignore the parallax, I am often doomed to accidentally hit the left side of the cue ball or send it a couple millimeters off line to the object ball. Making matters worse, I'm not sure my stroke is straight, but that might be correlated with my sighting. I'm Fargo 588.
Great observation and presentation. I Always wondered why commentators on TV do not analyze technique of players. Most commentators are just routine. Your analysis is top notch and commentators on tv should learn a thing or two from break from life channel.
Very interesting video on Mark Selby! Greetings from Cagayan, Philippines 🇵🇭! Could you do video on recreating on Gary Wilson’s snooker escape and safety shots against Luka Bercel or Kyren Wilson’s technique! ❤️💯🙏
Interesting one this...ive always suffered with a dominant left eye to the point where Im not hitting the cueball in the centre when I think I am. Im still not sure how to control this and feel comfortable so I might try Marks technique.
Good video, what's your view on Stephen Hendry when his eyes go to to pocket on the shot, also Alan Mcmanus rising up on the shot as he delivers the cue?
I do the same thing. I’m right handed and left eye dominate. It’s about tunneling in the brain. The two balls straighten out like a line in the imaging of the brain and then I adjust the defection of the cut. David Alcaide does the same thing. It may have to do with my Asperger’s. For example, imagine you have a laser in the tip of your pool stick that passes through the cue ball onto the rail behind the object ball, when I move I can see that laser relation to the rail, object ball and pocket. Before I move down into the shot I have a close estimation of the cut angle to the pocket and if it is less than 30°I know my brain sees the pocket to the left and over 30° to the right.
Interesting, I'd never noticed Mark's head movement. I'd like to see one on K Wilson - his little robotic approach walk and the fact he appears to rest his body weight slightly on the outside of his right foot.
Interesting insight, he never used to do the swaying/shaking as a youngster, we were regular practice partners and i never saw him do it when we were kids, as long as the balls go in do whatever works for you 🤷🏼♂️👌
He may have had a "top" regarding moving in his early Pro years. I remember (I think 😁) that Mark commented on this years ago when asked about the movement. He did move more and tried to get completely still on shot, but it didn't work well for him so he settled for less movement rather that textbook superstill. This is purely from my poor memory, I can't find the interview since I can't remember what year it was or who interviewed him. Whatever reason and style, he is an excellent player!
Maybe he is right handed but left eye dominant like me. I sorta do the same thing. I look at my shot behind the table, determine the shot I wanna make and then look at the straight angle or the angle I need with spin. Then I line up my cue and cue ball to the line I determined is right for the shot, I get down and look at the cue and cue ball then I align my dominant eye with the shot line and object ball itself with my dominant eye. So I literally do the same thing as him, BUT I honestly have no idea if that's why he does it.
I think I have an idea. Would be interesting to do a video where I speculate what it is and basically just ask am I right? I think it’s just a straight line across 2 different levels that only looks straight if your in the right place
I don't really understand why you are assuming that this way of sighting the shot is simply what is best for him and not a 'bad habit'. It makes sense that his left eye is his more dominant eye, but maybe this his how he calibrates his aim. In any case, you don't lose the potential to learn at 18 or 30 or whatever. I think it's more likely this is just efficient for him in spite of appearing rather odd.
Thats true.. But the definitions "dominant eye" isnt really correct. The definition is "preferred eye" by the brain. Sometimes there is no correlation between the stronger eye and the preferred eye. Great vid of course. Sorry for the correction. 💓🌹
