This is great, ty for posting. I played with Carl for 6 months about a year after this. This was one of Carl’s fav tunes at this tempo. He always had a few mouthpieces sitting on a stool and was constantly swapping them
There are some lovely close ups of their emboucheres in action, both are very high with their mouthpiece placements with not a lot of bottom lip in the mouthpiece, I find this fascinating as a Trombone player recovering from bells palsy,I also believe it helps with soft tongue articulation?
This kind of mouthpiece placement is very common. I don't think there's any particular connection to articulation, which isn't heavily connected to mouthpiece placement. People who play this way do sometimes have a "lighter" sound and an easy upper register, but those are just tendencies.
Indeed, two of the grand masters of the trombone. Sadly, it's difficult to appreciate the musicality of the tune because the audio is so distorted. But, thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting this, about as good as it gets!
Wonderful! Thank you!
the MASTERS
Thanks. Herb Ellis on guitar. Hank Jones on piano. Who’s on bass? Maybe Elvin Jones on drums?
Jones brothers. 😅
I was asking myself, is that elvin jones on drums? Never thought Elvin would play with bill and carl, but man, I'm glad I found it
Beautiful!!!
Beautiful!!
Brian Bromberg on bass.
Amazing playing all around (I’ve got to get busy transcribing). However, are we sure that Carl Fontana wasn’t Batman’s nemesis “The Penguin”;-)
❤️🖤
Top! ☻❤
Great stuff
Elkartian thank your for the brass videos. Is there any chance you could send me or repost Smedvig’s arrangement of Bernstein’s “Simple Song”?
Boners are hardly playing. 😢
