I was in attendance at the SkyDome for Rock vs Hogan at WM 18, and will never forget the crowd and atmosphere when Hogan came out. Even Stevie talking about it gives me goosebumps.

I was there at WM25 for Undertaker vs HBK. It was unreal and nobody knew. When HBK kicked out of the tombstone (with the hair whip arms crossed pin even) the crowd, myself included, exploded

Any match between the Midnight Express and the Rock and Roll Express is a 5 star match! As far as crowds getting hot and ring psychology, it just didn't get any better than that!
Really interesting criteria for a 5-star match, and I like thinking about it from different angles. I think, partly due to how Meltzer and WON, and Cagefight reviewers do it, there's a perception that a 5-star match is all about what happens in the ring, maybe in the building, but there is a lot to be said for a match that draws big money and has a lasting impact on the business in ways that aren't limited to what happens in-ring.
This was a fantastic video. My Father passed away last week. I grew up watching wrestling with him. So, this video was such a nice trip down memory lane. I can remember watching some of these classic matches with my Father.

Stevie is one of the best wrestlers of all time at introducing young talent to a roster! That said, his competitive work rate often gets underrated. He has incredibly crisp matches with all types of in ring talent.
The best matches are simply those that make you feel and get the emotions going. Wrestling IS a soap opera and each match tells a story. Thus, 5 stars surely equates to best acting, loudest crowds, biggest reactions, most memorable moments, best story told with some great moves.
I suppose for every 5 star match you give, you do a breakdown of every match of a certain moment that you knew it would be 5 stars. I love the content and that everyone has their own 5 star matches and not just Dave himself. It shouldn't be perfect, imperfections adds to the match. Benoit winning title and celebrating with Guerrero. For a moment, forget everything else. I absolutely loved that moment. big fan of the radicals. Also, Daniel Bryan winning twice in a night to get the title at mania. It was the main attraction and the crowd popped like mental!
i'm just glad we got people like Al Snow, Stevie Richards, even to some extent Russo for pointing out the match should be a draw. Hogan, Rock, SCSA didn't need flashy movesets they had charisma which is ultimately what matters more.
The 123 Kid & Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels & Diesel from Action Zone in October 1994 should get a 5 stars rating for sure! That match was incredible!
Rating wrestling is like rating a movie. Different strokes... Rating promos might be interesting though. All that said, I do enjoy your insight. I will second someone else's comment about the lack of cursing. Crude jokes somewhat coincide with wrestling but even those are handled wisely. Thank you for that as well.
Hellllooooo Doctor Stevie and James! The match that to this day I get that rush when I think about it Wrestlemania X-7 TLC... Edge spearing Jeff Hardy was just insane. I loved that entire series between Edge & Christian v Hardyz then later on those Damn Dudleys. But X-7... just magnificent.
Bret v Benoit in Owen's tribute was/is criminally underrated. (Shouldn't get any star rating as a trubute but it was one of the best matches I've seen.)

I've never put much thought into star ratings. The enjoyment of a match is so subjective. The kind of wrestling you like, the context of the match/feud, the time it took place. There are a lot of variables. For me it generally comes down to whether I liked the match or not, and while I can certainly rank a match bad, good, great.. if I enjoyed it, then all good. There are many '5 star' matches that I found boring, whereas some of my favourites could easily be seen as 3 star, or even a 2. Hulk/Andre and Hulk/Warrior remain two of my favourites, and that comes with a lot of retrospect. I didn't start watching wrestling until 98, and I've seen hundreds of matches that are better as far as flashy moves and all that.. but they just don't compare to those spectacles

The match that to this day I get that rush when I think about it Wrestlemania X-7 TLC... Edge spearing Jeff Hardy was just insane. I loved that entire series between Edge & Christian v Hardyz then later on those Damn Dudleys. But X-7... just magnificent.

I've never put much thought into star ratings. The enjoyment of a match is so subjective. The kind of wrestling you like, the context of the match/feud, the time it took place. There are a lot of variables.
For me it generally comes down to whether I liked the match or not, and while I can certainly rank a match bad, good, great.. if I enjoyed it, then all good.
There are many '5 star' matches that I found boring, whereas some of my favourites could easily be seen as 3 star, or even a 2.
Hulk/Andre and Hulk/Warrior remain two of my favourites, and that comes with a lot of retrospect. I didn't start watching wrestling until 98, and I've seen hundreds of matches that are better as far as flashy moves and all that.. but they just don't compare to those spectacles
