Wow! So glad I found this. I've been watching you for years on Pit Barrel Cooker vids, but I found a tri tip today (2/25/23) and googled it and who do I find? My Pit Barrel buddy! Figured I'd get an Australian. Your son is a terrific foil for you, he did great! I'm marinating mine now in Soy, Worcestershire, lemon juice, olive oil, crushed garlic, Italian Seasoning, salt, pepper, and red pepper. I don't think I'll smoke it, but I will reverse sear it as you did. I have the Pit Barrel, a large Sabre infrared grill, a Weber professional kettle, and a 36" Pit Boss griddle on my deck, but with the kids raised the cooker that gets the most use--well in the winter season--is the Weber Q. Very versatile little cooker, and perfect for the wife and me.
Thanks for the shout out! I'm about to take my Q to the country this weekend. I really need to pick up my editing game. That tri-tip looked killer. Really great stuff, man.
You bet man. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Have a great trip!
Justin
Did it
Did it today, September 16 2023
Scrounged together stuff from the garage, wood shed and kitchen...
Worked like magic...
Used salt, pepper, sugar and chili powder for rub...
All of our dinner guests thank you...

Brand new tool in My tool kit
We have tri tip year around in California. Hence Santa Maria tri tip. I always BBQ fat side up first, you can go direct fire which take about 30 mins. Flip 15 mins. I usually go slow route away from fire, smoked with hickory about 10 inches away from main heat source 30mins flip for a total of a hour cook. Juicy every time.
Awesome info. I'll try to figure out a way to replicate that at some point. Thanks Zents!
Justin
I made a tri-tip on my Q last week. It came out amazing! The leftovers made great roast beef sandwiches too.
Yeah, it's a great cut! I love it.
I love that in California, it is super easy to find tri-tip. It's truly the West coast's cut. Brisket on the other hand isn't a big deal on the West coast. We can get it easily, but tri-tip is king out here. It's my favorite cut.
Yeah, you are lucky. I love it. We can get it in Dallas but you have to know where to look. Was surprised to find it in Eureka Springs...but delighted.
Justin
Wonderful video, Justin! Thanks for showing us around the cabin and sharing that gorgeous view - I'm sure you all had a great time.
Thanks. It was awesome, man. We had a blast.
Justin
That's some nature right there. Nice tri tip
Yeah there was nature all over the freaking place. LOL it was good. We needed the time out there. Hope you're doing well.
Justin
Well ill try again. Great video i have the baby Q 100 and been taking to all my RV travels cooked many meals for my 4 kids on our outings. Great to see your son working with you these are precious times enjoy them they go buy so fast. I have cooked everything on it smoke small turkey breast, many casseroles .I have the cable for a 20lb propane We don't get many TR-Tips here in Northeast thats a California thing but i here its good meat, I have done a small pork Tenderloin as well came out great . Glad to see you back doing videos. Love the Humor
jerry
Thanks Jerry. I appreciate the reminder on the kid stuff. You are so right my friend.
Justin
Video of the week! Wow, THAT'S the Arkansas I remember from days (lone) gone by. How *do* they keep their water so clean??? One glimpse of that Tri Tip added 4 more fork holes to my monitor (which I have to account for). 😆
hahaha. That's funny, Dan. Remind me again where you lived in Arkansas? Or you can just tell me in person in a few weeks. lol
Justin
I didn't actually live in Arkansas, but I did deliver a few loads back in the old truckin' days (SO glad those days are OVER!!!). I was always impressed that the rivers and streams were so clean! Reminded me a lot of Colorado, where I AM from.
I see. Makes sense.
Hey Justin! You know what my idea of camping is lol, but I sure did like that cabin! Man, that was a perfect place for some drone footage! Tri Tip looked great, and that's a really handy little gasser grill you got there! Perfect for such occasions!
Yeah, man. It's really nice for what it is...especially for 40% off. I sent the drone up for a little bit but then my app told me there were 2 airports in the area so I stopped. I looked into later and they weren't really airports at all (one was a dudes farm that he used for his own private plane.) I'm not sure what the rules are exactly but that seems dumb. That said, it was beautiful.
Justin
Justin Thanks for video, but more importantly, enjoy your family and vacation
Thanks George, We are back now but I agree... we gotta keep the first things first.
Justin
Justin, great video! I have to say as an Appalachian Hilljack, the comment about "nature getting onto you" is SOOO city slicker! But, your grill video knocked it out of the ballpark! Keep up the good work! You city slicker! ;-)
LOL. I know, right?!? I was definitely built for the suburbs.
Thanks for watching,
Justin
GREAT JOB!! The Fire Escape Griller got me to you. My local Wal Mart has the Weber Q 1200 on clearance for $99. GREAT BUY!!
It is a great deal! You should get that.
Thanks for watching,
Justin
I got the Q 120 3 years ago and am thoroughly enjoying it.
I just picked up a Q1000. The first thing I cooked on it was a Tri Tip on vacation. Nice!
Great minds think alike. lol. Actually, I was looking for a ribeye but they were not very good looking. I did a rack of ribs the next day and they turned out amazing as well but I had already cut this video and didn't want to redo it (vacation.) lol.
Justin
What an awesome place. Great looking tri and incredible view. Hope you had a great vacation. Your sense of humor makes your videos really entertaining!
Thanks Lee,
I really appreciate that, man.
Justin
Beaver lake is where we take all of our SCUBA students to do their open water dives. We generally camp there as well.
I've heard it's typically pretty clear. It wasn't when we were there though. I think it was too much rain. Have you seen anything cool under there?
Justin
Hello Justin, what a nice video of your vacation. Looks like everybody got to fill up with relaxation, family time away from work, and awesome views. Tri-Tip turned out well. You did take some cooking skills with you. lol It's good to see a video pop up with Baby Back Maniac on it. Enjoyed it
Thanks Phil,
I agree. It's been way too long. Just too busy. Should be posting more frequently now.
Justin
we have never tried tri tip on the grill but that looked great.
You should. It's freaking awesome. Honestly, it's one of my favorite cuts. You'll love it.
Justin
"I like nature but dont want any of it on me" Good stuff, enjoyed the video!
LOL. Thanks for watching, Chester. Have a great evening.
Justin
Another great video, Justin! Hope you enjoyed yourselves. The tr-tip & the views looked great!
Thank you! We had a great time.
Justin
Like the way that you vacation. My kind of roughing it. I have used a Cedar plank to protect my Tri-tip. Looks good.
Thanks Tina,
yeah, I did ribs on a cedar plank the next night and they turned out fantastic. I wish RUclips would allow us to upload pictures and I'd show you. They were so good.
Justin
Great video Justin ! I have a Weber Q1200 I use on my boat and love it....it's pretty impressive for a small portable propane grill. It can be challenging cooking up a meal for 4 on a small portable grill, especially when it's your only means of cooking food. I'd love to see you prepare some full meals on this little grill and see just what can be done with it.
Thats a great idea Stuart. I'll put it on the list.
Justin
I pulled one of these out of a dumpster 5 years ago and I love it. It's perfect for chicken breasts and hot dogs for the family!
Yeah, I totally agree. And they travel easily. I'm really glad I have it.
Justin
Nice vacation spot. The view is awesome. That little grill is pretty cool too. Glad to hear you guys having fun. Smoking some meat tonight too, hoping to have a video up this weekend of it.
Awesome, man. How did it turn out?
Baby Back Maniac the food came out good. Fed about 25 of my students. I just need more experience recording and editing. Wanted to ask you, as you know I'm a noob when it comes to this, what's a good camera for entry level youtubers like me, that will eventually work there way up? Again thanks in advance for everything.
Damn good video Justin, I was rolling when you son mentioned no WiFi...."we should leave in a couple of days", too funny, looks like you guys had a great time. Nice cook too!
We really did, buddy. I want to go back. We needed it. Hope you guys are doing well.
Great one! I'm from Austin and grew up on brisket but moved to SF bay, CA a few years ago and just started experimenting with tri-tip. It almost makes up for our less than great brisket selection. Amazing cut of meat.
Anyway keep up the awesome work, I'm a long time subscriber and always look forward to your videos!
Thanks man. I appreciate it. Yeah, my brother in law is from Temple, TX and he moved to Mountain View after college. He's back here now but he used to come visit and all he wanted to eat was BBQ and Tex Mex. lol
Justin
I almost got one of those but I went with smoke hollow vector grill the middle burner has a place for wood chips I like it because it fits in my side box of my truck I like your stuff keep it up
Thanks Terry. That's what's great about when we live. We have options. LOL
Have a great evening,
Justin
Nicely put together video!
Lovely Video Justin. That was some hard core camping. Isn't it wonderful to just live with the bare minimum you need in life like you had in that simple cottage. 😁
haha. Exactly. It was great to feel the freedom the woods...outside the window. lol
Justin
Awesome.
I have a Q. Going to try this sometime.
Go for it!
Great vid Justin. I'm grilling beef this weekend too, I was considering tri tip. Good Stuff. Keep up the great work
Hey MeatHead,
You'll love it. It's one of my favorite cuts. Give it a shot if you haven't already.
Justin
Baby Back Maniac The first thing that all my boys learn to cook for me and their mother was hotdogs. LOL
Nice vacation video!
Thanks Tom,
It was a great time. What's your travel grill? Or do you take the whole arsenal? LOL
Baby Back Maniac the travel grill for me is either the PK or PBC
That turned out good! I was actually looking at those grills at the hardware store the other day.
The are really nice. It'd be great for you because the lid is really light and there's not as much to fumble with. The cast iron grate is really nice too. I also did ribs this way but didn't get good footage. Very happy with both.
Justin
Heya Justin, excellent trip it looks like. I'm glad you included the family in this video. The funny thing is that I just subbed to Fire Escape Griller myself. I like his stuff, very interesting take on how to grill in larger cities.
I agree. I really enjoy his stuff.
Thanks for watching,
Justin
No problem, I was going to call you Jason. :D
lol
great cook Justin. Just goes to show that skill and the proper technique are what's key to turning out killer food...not the most expensive wiz bang grill.
I totally agree, Jeremy. This is a fun little grill.
Justin
I just wanted to say, I enjoy all your videos!! They have helped be Lot with buying products and cooking!!
Awesome, man. Glad I could help!
Great video Justin. Tri-tip looked great and awesome job including the family!
Thanks Eric,
I was glad there were willing to participate. Sometimes they would rather not. We had a fun week up there.
Justin
Weber.
I'm buying this grill because of this video. #TakeNote
Aaaand I think this is the last one. This has been fun. After seeing all your comments on all the different videos, I feel like we've really spent some quality time together today. lol.
Awesome video! Love your style and humor.
Thanks Brian. I really appreciate the kind words, man. Congrats on the promotion.
Justin
Nice video Justin! I hope you are doing well and enjoyed your "camping" trip. Great job on that tri tip!
Thanks Matt,
I really appreciate it. We had a blast. It was great to disconnect for a few days. I really needed it.
Justin
Justin just scored one today at Home Depot for 25.00 because missing drip pan and got one of those on Amazon for 28.00. So 55.00 bucks later I own a Weber Q 1200!!!! Scott
Seriously wow that’s a great deal
Great video. Tri tip looked good
Thanks Quinn,
They were good. I appreciate you watching.
Justin
Talk about roughing it! I couldn’t imagine being in a place that didn’t have wi-fi lol. That WeberQ did an amazing job on that tri-tip and nice indirect setup, Justin.
Thanks SWB,
It was a great trip...despite the lack of wifi. lol.
Justin
Justin's first thing on his holiday home checklist, can i BBQ at the place. Not a bad priority if you ask me :-) That place looked lovely bud with a view words can't describe adequately, i hope it was a memorable vacation/holiday.
Yeah man. it was great. Northwest Arkansas is one of the most underrated pretty places in the country. I think it flies under the radar because there is are no oceans or legit mountains, but man...so pretty.
That’s a million dollar view right there
It was beautiful, for sure!
Hey Justin, great vid! I am going to try this on an upcoming (tent) camping trip! Do you happen to remember if you had the grill on full or did you turn it down? Thanks!
Man, I love my Thermopop. It's a little slower (2 seconds?) but is always bang on.
Good to see you back, we've just been on Prince Edward Island up here and had no grilling while camping at all. FIREBAN!
Hey Sean,
Boooo! So no fire at all? So you just take cold food?
Justin
Two burner gas cooker only. Just not interesting to cook with other than pans.
Yeah, the hurts. Hopefully you get some rain soon.
Thats what I'm talking about! thats a great babyback maniac video. Good job with the baby weber man.
Thanks, Man Pap. I appreciate it man.
Justin
BRILLIANT vid, mate
Thanks John. I appreciate it. Have a great evening.
Justin
Nice locale and cook.
Excellent views too.
Thanks for another bbq adventure.
Thanks Scott,
I really appreciate you watching, bud.
Justin
Great video! Nice job of incorporating vacation and BBQ. Two of my favorite things. :)
Yes, that worked out well, didn't it?
It was a great week. we really needed it.
Justin
I've been loving the Fire Escape Griller videos!
Yeah, I like them too. It's a fun little channel and he seems like a nice guy.
Justin
His videos inspire me to use the Q 1200 more often. I've used it to grill pizza, tri-tip, chicken wings, burger, and kabobs. For a little grill, it is very nice!
Omg dude where the hell have you been,!!!!! Lol you are the best, it's been like a month man.js my family and I love you please do us a favor her in st Louis mo and keep these awesome videos coming
Thanks Matt. I intend to. Life just got crazy busy all of a sudden. I'm hoping to be able to post consistently for a while.
Thanks for watching,
Justin
Did I actually say "live"..? Clumsy fingers. The core question was about the flavor of the trip tip. Was it acceptable to you since it wasn't actual charcoal etc. ?
I'd love - your input. These grills are very well made and easy cleaning. Thx.
haha. That was funny. I think I just replied to you over email.
Looks like a very nice place! And you definetly know how to cook on the little Weber - the TriTip looked super tasty and tender.
I love tritip. It's definitely in my top 3 cut. Thanks for watching, buddy.
Justin
Sounds like I should give it a try ;-) Thanks for all your effort and making all these great Videos even on Holiday!
Any time!
Great vid Justin, nice place to stay and a delicious tri tip!! Cheers Ben.
Thanks Ben. Appreciate it!
Justin
Nice bbq I love the color. Tri Tip is easy out here in Ca, you can get it anytime.
That's what I here. I'm jealous. LOL
Justin
Excellent video!
Thanks, dude.
Justin
Awesome place, great video
It was so beautiful up there. Thanks for watching, Robert.
great video!!! what an awesome place to grill!!!
Thanks man. It was a blast. I appreciate you watching.
Justin
Baby Back Maniac i always enjoy them!
Thank you!
Great vid again ! Greetings from the Netherlands (seriously raining)
Hopefully it will clear up soon.
justin
Love the editing on your videos! keep it up!
thanks!
Great seeing your family Justin and boy did that look good :)
Thanks Logan. It was a great week, it really was.
Justin
Great video and family!!
Thanks Mike. I appreciate you watching.
Justin
Great video!!
Thank you!
Justin
Great Vid Justin! I have the slightly bigger weber Q series and I love it. Definitely an inspirational video to do something for youtube on mine. Cheers!
Awesome, you should.
Yeah I kind of love that grill. I'm glad I took it.
Justin
Loved the video! I get down to Eureka Springs every fall to fish. It is certainly pretty country. Keep them coming ! (longhair75 a the BBQ Brethren)
Thanks Peter,
Incredibly pretty. Very relaxing too. Thanks for stopping by.
Justin
Love your videos. Funny!! Tri tip is my favorite now I like it more than steaks.
I love it too. Thanks for watching.
Justin
We can't find tri-tip around here😞I like your way of roughing it. Looked delicious, hope to try that cut one day. Thanks for sharing😃
Are you still in GA? I bet you could find it in Atlanta...espeically if they had it in the little grocery store where I was.
It's worth picking up if you run across it. It's one of my favorite cuts. Dave and I did a video on Adrenaline BBQ Companie's youtube channel were we Sous Vide it first and it was pretty much the most ridiculously amazing steak I've ever had. ruclips.net/video/CHb7beieq6w/видео.html
Baby Back Maniac, Yes I'm still in Georgia. I'm gonna have to go on the look for it. Hoping to get a kettle grill soon. I'd love to try it, on it😃
Baby Back Maniac , I watched it, never planned on getting into the Sous Vide craze, now I'm officially convinced. That was amazing.😃
Yeah, I was skeptical as well. It was great though. Totally worth the trouble.
Justin
What body of water was that in the background? I think I would have had to try fishing it. Also, that Tony's is pretty potent stuff. A little professional overrun with that and the entire family will be shouting "fire in the hole!" by morning. I hope you and yours had a great time.
LOL. Thanks man. It was Beaver Lake in Northwest Arkansas. Absolutely beautiful.
Justin
You're a funny man. Loved the humor!
Thank you soooo much for your video it helped a lot I kept trying to find videos on how to grill the tri tip on gas grill your was perfect. One question though how low did you have it on like on how many degrees? Also you said 35 min right?
Yor videos are great and you have a beautiful family 👍
Thank you, Steven. I like them.
Nice vid! How'd that Tri compare to the SV version we made?
The SV was WAY better for the reasons you'd expect. This was great but it was "camping great." lol
Justin
Great video brotha
Thanks Jacob,
I really appreciate you watching.
Justin
great video
Thanks again Stephanie. I'm really glad you liked it.
Justin
Nice video. I Ike your style. Nice place you and your family stayed at!!
Love there's no shrinkage on the tri-tip. I bought a cast iron smoker box for my gas weber. I soak my wood over an hour and don't get much smoke. Seriously, did you soak yours before putting it in the foil?
Nope. Not at all. It was exactly like I showed you in the video. Maybe that helps?
Justin
You can Cook my Brother...Love ya!!
Thank you Ellen. I really appreciate it my friend. Have a great rest of the week.
Justin
Cool video Justin! What a place to stay! What was the temp while you guys were up there?
Mid 90's during the day...and humid. Luckily we had shade and air conditioning. lol.
Justin
oh yeah from Tx but live in bamma right now
You are just following the good football teams around, aren't you? lol
Justin
Follow 92%
Small Q
I'm now a dinner party hero..
THANKS
Go to Trader Joe's. They are selling a bunch of nice tri tips right now..........
Great vaca video
Thank you!
Justin I was wondering. What video equipment do you use for videos? I'm thinking of starting a channel.
This was shot entirely on the Canon G7X M2. My normal camera is a Canon 80D. There are links in the description if you want to check them out. They are not the cheapest cameras in the world but they're really good at the stuff I need them to do.
The whole reason I got the G7X is because it's kind of like a mini DSLR in a point-and-shoot body. Not quite as versatile and the sensor isn't quite as big, but Much less to carry and great Image quality. I was worried about the sound because there's no microphone port but it sounded okay.
Justin
Nice cook! Nice editing! Greetings from Mexico.
Thanks Louise,
I really appreciate you watching. Have a great evening.
Justin
DOING A GREAT JOB JUSTIN. I'M ON BOARD. COOL PLACE. WHAT TOWN & STATE.
It's off Beaver Lake in Arkansas near Eureka Springs. Really cool place.
Thanks for watching this. Appreciate it.
Justin
4:00 made me crack up. Thanks for the entertainment
Hey Justin,
We're you pleased with this grill ? I need a small, manageable grill for my condo. Been looking at these .
Would live your opinion.
Thanks, Danny
Hey Danny. Check your email.
Hi Justin, great video. where is that place? I would love to take my family there.
It's a cabin off beaver Lake near Eureka Springs. Look it up. It's beautiful. There's a lot of cabins available.
Justin
Great vid and nice idea for the indirect! Where did you find the tri-tip at?
Thanks Adam,
It was a little grocery store called "Hart's" in Eureka Springs. Only grocery store in town that we saw.
Justin
Beautiful place to spend some time in.
I dont have a gas grill yet, but seeong this video i thougt perhaps a q1200 or q2200 would be a nice complement to my 22inch kettle, and the mini wsm i will be building based on a smokey joe, to use for searing, as well as quicker cooks. Would you say that after using it a few days it could work for that, or would you rather recommend a larger gasgrill of some kind? Is one burner enough for serious cooking? Thanks for your hard work on your channel as well!
Regards from Sweden
I know a lot of people who buy this for camping and it ends up becoming their main gas grill. If you are going to cook for a lot of people or cook often and don't need the portability, the Genesis is really nice...but much more expensive.
Hope this helps,
Justin
Thank you Justin. I think it will be great for us then. I rarely cook for more than 4, and normally just 3. :)
/Lasse
Sounds like a good fit then. This one runs pretty hot. I did ribs in it the on this same trip and they turned out really good but they were definitely not cooked low and slow. I've heard the bigger model has more of a low end temperature range so maybe that's something to think about...especially since you'll also get more space.
Justin
Baby Back Maniac thank you. Yes i read up on it a little. A trick could be to start it on really low heat, use a deflector and a rivet on top + a small waterpan. I have checked our equivalent to craigs list to no avail - ppl seem to like their cookers, so i might just wait to see if there are some end of season sales - or do as usual - buy one when i see one :). The size issue i will consider as well - you have a point there for sure. Appreciate your input. /Lasse
It so happens the fall sale at my local diy started at 6 this morning, so I stopped by on my way to work. The q2200 has been out of stock since may apparently... So I went for the second to last one - and its black :) Now I just need to order a large bottle adaptor (also out of stock locally) and I am set. Thanks again Justin!
Hey Justin,
a Video I watched a while back you had the Thermopen Wifi remote thermometer. I've just spent 20 minutes trying to find the damn Vid and decided it's easier to take the lazy way out and just ask. Can you tell me what it was.
Hey Keith,
I could have swore I responded to this. Can you clarify which therm is was. Because the thermapen is a particular thermometer, I did a review of the thermoworks smoker but it wasn't wifi at the time, and I've got another therm called a fireboard that is wifi that I put briefly in a couple of videos.
My suspicion is this is what you are looking for.
ruclips.net/video/9LrWxv3KEJU/видео.html
yes that was it. I did find it thru searching so all's good. Used it this weekend
Great job! Loved this Jason err Justin errr jjj John 😜
haha. I'm never going to live that down.
Justin
In the end your wife looked at you, with the face: cook some more, what are you standing here xD
lol. I realized after I made the video I held that shot too long and should have cut sooner. That look was actually more of a "Why are you still filming me...we're done, right?" lol
Justin
HEY JUSTIN QUICK QUESTION WHY SMOKE AND THEN SEAR?
In this case it was just because It's harder to bring temps down than up so start low and end high. Also, meat seems to take on smoke better when it's colder.
Thanks for watching,
Justin
Baby Back Maniac as always thanks justin
EXCELENTE!
Thank you!
Hi from California city ca
Hi back. Thanks for watching.
Justin
some reason i was able to write comment i did the early time you did the video
Whole foods got them tri tips.
Yep. They are good. Very Good.
Justin
