Scorsese being upset at the Taxi Driver game concept makes sense when you think about his wariness around the subject of violence in all of his movies (ESPECIALLY Taxi Driver).
TRAVIS BICKLE deals w/all kinds of social issues, mental illness, ppl w/mental illness that fell thru cracks, stalking, child exploitation & drug addict profiting from that, etc, ONE OF MY FAV MOVIES BUT I DONT SEE IT FLESHING OUT THE STORY OR CHARACTERS IN ANY REAL WAY, hate to sound like im anti video game violence cuz DEFINITELY NOT but i feel they woulda used CLASSIC FILM to be backdrop of video game & it just doesn't make sense, sure it does for game company to use an established successful movie as that would sell more than TAXI VIGALANTE or UEBER VIGALANTE 😮
Legacy of Kain Dead Sun lives rent free in my head. I remember saying while nosgoth was announced that square HAD to be working on a singleplayer LoK game to be putting out that, and then the gameplay leaked and it looked pretty interesting. Hopefully we see more of that series because I’ve been playing them since I was pretty little.
You actually mentioned the one I always think about. The Getaway 3. I still hold out hope that one day they will do a new one. Maybe in vain… but hey, a guy can dream 🤷🏻♂️
Especially with the console power nowadays they could highly detail and render so much at once and have it be a slow paced, accuracy driven and obviously storytelling at the forefront with gameplay/cutscene hybrid stuff
I still always think about “killing day” and “eight days”. I think about those trailers and reading about them in the official PlayStation magazine. I’m gutted they never game to pass. Same with “The Getaway 3”.
I fondly remember "8 Days" being showcased back in the mid 2000's, a "Kane & Lynch" style action shooter! I still would love to see you discuss & show "Snake Plissken's Escape" from the 6th gen era!
I remember being really pumped for a Highlander game that was going to be on the PS3/360. I wanna say it was around 2009 or 2010. I still go back and watch the trailer for it on RUclips every once and while and think about what could've been.
"Redwood Falls," a horror FPS, looked incredible for 2008. Clearly inspired by The Thing, I think it only ever had one game-play demo shown but I still think about it now and then.
Ahhh, great to see the series extended Jake! Lets talk about Mercenaries 3, I loved the series, though I found the first one to be better. Amazing factions, soverign territory conflicts, vehciles, and combat was more unique for its time, calling in bomb drops or artillery. RIP :(
Vividly remember some hubbub about something titled Mercs 3, which was a place holder name I think, for a sequel to Mercenaries 2 world in Flames. A video was out showing a bunch of mannequins driving around a course crashing into each other in the Mercenaries 2 engine on current systems. Not sure if the video was really connected or not, but was really hoping to see something on a future entry. I agree that the first game was a blast to play and was better than it sequel. Though World in Flames had some interesting ideas. Pity about Pandemic Studios closing to.
Technically not cancelled, but I would have loved to see what Conker's Quest was gonna be like before it got morphed into Conker's Bad Fur Day. As a kid, I did want more cute mascot platforming shit, and although I never owned a copy of CBFD, I always appreciated the fact that they knew their audience would have grown up enough by the time it came out to justify its transformation.
We need more realistic crime games to go with GTA and Mafia. I have the fondest memories of playing Scarface and the Godfather 1 and 2. Extorting shopkeepers was hilarious. Love this series Jake!
Damn, that Taxi Driver game sounded like a really cool concept too! Its a shame it got canceled, but yeah. That mid 2000s was such a huge boom of these movie games that came out left and right.
I always think of Midway Games’ “Fear & Respect,” which was to be produced by John Singleton and starring Snoop Dogg as a lead character. It was an obvious GTA Clone, following the success of San Andreas. But with the star power, it certainly would’ve carried quite a lot of cache in the novelty department.
I wish we could’ve gotten another a sequel or follow up to Jet Li Rise to Honor during that early PlayStation 3 era. That game hit all the right spots for me as a young lad
That game is so underrated I honestly feel like it got released at the wrong time though it came out around the time San Andreas was released an of course everyone was buying that game but either way it was great to play
Gosh 8 Days was a michael bay-esque dream game to really really play! id wanna see this done with the tech now, and it would be a glorious experience to behold! 🙏
I always wish we got RE Outbreak File 3. A real shame file 2 didnt sell, as that game had a ton of levels that were supposed to really tie the entire outbreak series together.
Resident Evil 1 for Gameboy Color was on this list for me for years. I'm so glad a build of it got dumped onto the internet a few years back. It's so impressive for a GBC game.
Jake you are so good at what you do on both your channels. You just sit in front of the camera with (apparently) no script and talk effortlessly about your passion with games. and you have a great personality to boot.
There was a game called Deep Down that I still wonder about. I was “deep down” into the Dark Souls franchise and it looked very reminiscent of it just with next-gen graphics. This was long before we had seen DS3 or Bloodborne (I think we might have known very minimal information about “Project Beast”) so the idea of a game like that was super appealing.
Please keep doing this series, I can't remember a lot of the games unless I get a random thought of it at a random time, but seeing a lot of these reminds me of them! I love this stuff man, you're onto a good series of video here!
Big ups on the Shoot 'Em Up shout-out. I friggin love that movie so much and nobody ever talks about it. I wasn't lucky enough to see it in the theater but bought it on dvd right away and it's been one of my favorite action movies since. Criminally underrated.
"You leave town tonight, right now. And when you're gone, you stay gone, or you be gone" said Marsellus Wallace, in Pulp Fiction. Ving Rhames did play some really iconic roles throughout his career. Thanks for your videos!
Playing as Ving Rhames would have been so cool and going against Gary Oldman would be the icing on the cake , man the game could have been so good . Making the engine parallel to the game development is pretty much a nail in the coffin for most games , Mafia 2 had the same engine issues but atleast Mafia 2 got completed .
My brothers and I grew up playing the heck out of StarCraft and I was always looking forward to Ghost. Probably not as much of a forgotten one than some of the others you've talked about, but I just loved the idea of seeing the units and environments at scale. I never got into WoW, but when I watched friends play, that was my favorite part. Seeing the WC2 units as a full scale world. Also, SC already had so many levels where you micromanaged just one hero or small group through a level so I thought it would just make sense.
Before I watched I was going to mention Harker. Glad to see I'm not the only one that still remembers that game. Two other cancelled games that was somewhat contemporary with Harker was the Wii horror FPS The Grinder and the colorful Pirate Hack'n Slash Captain Blood that was to be released on PS3/XB360.
One cancelled game on my mind is Battlefield: Home Delivery, which was a weird surreal pizza delivery simulator where you played as a panda. It was being developed for the original Xbox and no gameplay had been released, other than a really bizarre trailer. It's so obscure and forgotten that I honestly wonder what it would have been like if the game actually released.
Jake should do a video talking about video games that he would like to see get a sequel... Or if they've already gotten a sequel that they get another one. And I hope one of the games on his list would be A Plague Tale 3 because I'm really hoping for that game to happen!
I always thought about that cancelled Kirby game for the Gamecube that eventually turned into Kirby Return to Dreamland for Wii. The game pretty much looked the game, but the fact that it was the first mainline Kirby on home consoles in a *long* time, I always found it fascinating.
With how far technology has progressed so far, I'd love to see another attempt at 8 days. Heck, I would keep the graphics as they are as long as the gameplay can actually live up to the ambition.
What I love about your videos is we're around the same age, I have an extensive video game history, as I think something, you literally say it a few seconds later. Good stuff 👍
I was really looking forward to The Grinder, it was going to be a crazy ambitious Wii game by the makers of The Conduit. It looked so cool, I'm bummed it never saw the light of day
I don’t know if this is too “mainstream” for this series, but there was a Daredevil game in the works in the original Xbox era I think that I think would be cool to talk about, especially with the Born Again show coming
I love the shoot em up movie reference. I remember really liking that flick when I saw it at around 18 or so. It had a lot of elements tyhat would go on to make John Wick so good, though maybe a bit less serious.
Dead Rush was another game that I remembered, but couldn't remember the title of. This series has been awesome for finding the stuff that, yeah, kinds of bangs around my head at times and stuff like that.
Ugo Volt was a weird game set in a post-apocalyptic Lisbon, I was always curious about the world and designs they had created with that one, but it ended up getting canned and the studio shut down 2 years after the game was shown at E3 2006.
There is a game that I suddenly remembered again and I swear it even had trailers on youtube and such but i cannot remember the name of it anymore During the DayZ days, there was an indie game project that had the same concept as DayZ, but the gimmik was: it's a one life game, if you died, you'd have to buy it again, so people wouldnt instantly kill others for no reason wonder what happened to that project...just completely went off my radar, but it was one of those that looked interesting but i forgot about until years later
there was a trailer for a new phantom dust game coming out that they showed at e3 in 2014 i was so excited to see erger a sequel or remake of my favorite game of all time.
I anticipated a Mercenaries 3 for a few years after World in Flames; very unfortunate that Pandemic Studios closed before that could happen. Always thought that borrowing elements from other games like Just Cause 3 and MGSV could've helped improve gamplay. Never anticipated one, but a sequel to the Punisher game from 2005 could have been fun.
Thing is though, I remember a resident evil type game, that appeared to be semi open world, which also had vehicles in it, and the game trailer I remember seeing had the character running then driving on a partially destroyed highway with zombies dotted around, wish I could remember what the hell it was... Anyway thanks for the gaming goodness.
Have you seen mrsaintsgodzilla21's vid on the canceled punisher 2?? That game was my entire childhood I'm so sad the sequel got canned. It actually looked cool as hell but all the work just got transitioned into saints row, funny to go from anti hero killing criminals to being one
I remember in 2007 reading a game magazine article about a zombie game for the wii called ZOMBIE MASSACRE. Basically it was a co op Crazy Taxi style game where one guy was the driver of a Cadillac and the rest were using an assortment of guns and melee in the passenger seats. The synopsis goes: You are a soldier whose mission is to deliver a nuke to the center of the city, your squad gets wiped out, but you get saved and team up with these street punk gangsters in a Cadi and fight your way to the center of town Crazy Taxi style to deliver the nuke and GTFO. Has anyone else heard of this cancelled game????
Damn this video really made me remember all the cancelled games I was hyped for 🤣 I remember This is Vegas (pretty much a Gta clone in Vegas) looked really cool for the time A game I will always be upset was canceled is Prey 2, the gameplay looked sick and loved the bounty hunter story it was going for And ofc last but not least 1313, that leaked early gameplay looked really damn smooth, parkour looked great
I keep forgetting and remembering that PS-demo in which there was this fully armored knight who went into some kind of catacomb to fight a dragon, and when the dragon shot fire at him he would hide behind the shield and the camera would shake and stuff. - It was definitely pre-rendered (although I think they didn't really pretend it was gameplay), but it was just awesome and I still want that to be a game. Like this very raw and gritty kind of game, with very little interface or RPG-crap like stats or whatever. Just being a knight or whatever it was and fighting beasts like dragons with very realistic visuals and physics. - I keep forgetting the name, but I think it was just one short word. I just can't find it, every time.
Actually, I just found it again: It's called "Deep Down". I don't know why it's so hard to remember for me, but it was a working-title anyway. - I also just realized there was actually way more on it, like actual gameplay-demos, and it actually still looked really good. - It was more into the direction that I didn't want, the stats and upgrades and crap, also the fact that it was a cooperative game, but still, looks good to this day and it should've happened. - Wish Capcom would reconsider it. Of all studios, they should be one to be open to it, but... I don't know why this got axed. - Here's that trailer, btw: ruclips.net/video/ivwgE_t8a5s/видео.html - That part with the shield still gets my adrenaline going.
I don’t know if it got cancelled, but I still remember that post apocalyptic they showcased where you’re in a desert ridden city and you use poles to traverse buildings and shit. I think it was called I Am Alive or something like that
I remember reading the write up in the Xbox magazine on the first person take on XCOM. The screenshots looked amazing I waited on the game for years and found out that it was cancelled and reverted it to the strategy style layout
Don't know if you've already covered this, but there was an Arkane / Steven Spielberg game where you played an alien that sounded amazing. The studio worked on it in the years between Dark Messiah and Dishonored. The graphics looked on a similar level to 8 Days
City of the Dead! A zombie game in collaboration with George Romero (and initially American McGee) that featured Tom Savini and a mode where you could take out zombies like Burnout: "One of the modes within City of the Dead mimics Burnout 3’s infamous Crash Mode and tasks players with killing as many zombies as possible with a single shot from a specific weapon." :(
Taxi Driver would have been interesting! Games about upholding the law aren't as common as the games about breaking it. There just aren't any gritty & realistic vigilante games.
Remember this game from a gameinformer magazine called Human Element which was supposed to be some multi-platform zombie apocalypse rpg with multiplayer features that sounded really cool but stayed in development hell for a few years and then just faded away
A cancelled game that comes to my mind was Bottle Rocket Entertainment’s The Flash video game it looked really good and showed promise for a 360 era game and it looked like it was gonna do justice to the Flash from a character and gameplay perspective especially around the time it was supposed to come out it could’ve been as popular and revolutionary as Arkham Asylum which was set to come out around the same time I hope one day we get a definitive AAA Flash game with similar if not the exact same mechanics from the cancelled project
I know it’s not that old but I think 1313’s cancellation will forever hurt.
It hurts far less since we got Jedi Fallen Order
Yes but I think jedi survivor will fill some of that void with the Coruscant section!!
Agreed
The idea of a Taxi Driver game can only be explained by the The Godfather, Jaws, Warriors, and Scarface era of PS2.
All superb classics both in cinematography & much later gaming.
A time when everything came on the disc… no dlc needed to be bought.
The best time
They somehow pulled that off back then
@@TheRealRa0ulDuke yes, 3 hour games for $50 lol
Scorsese being upset at the Taxi Driver game concept makes sense when you think about his wariness around the subject of violence in all of his movies (ESPECIALLY Taxi Driver).
It’s such a fundamental misunderstanding of the movie like you’re not supposed to view Travis Bickle as this cool guy to make a video game out of.
@@bennyfaziocriminalmastermind I was about the say the same thing. Kind of like the Fight Club game.

@@floatinggoose9197 Yes
the first one was so good! This is going to be a great series.
More of these videos please! I love hearing about cancelled games but it's hard to find obscure ones.

Mark Ecko was one of the best games I played as a kid and one of the only games that stayed with me in the back of my mind.
They're making a movie for it. And there's rumors of a possible reboot or sequel.
"Redwood Falls," a horror FPS, looked incredible for 2008. Clearly inspired by The Thing, I think it only ever had one game-play demo shown but I still think about it now and then.

Some come to mind
The Grinder (High Voltage Software)
Sadness (Nibris)
Project H.A.M.M.E.R. (Nintendo)
Faith and a .45 (Deadline Games)
We need more realistic crime games to go with GTA and Mafia. I have the fondest memories of playing Scarface and the Godfather 1 and 2. Extorting shopkeepers was hilarious. Love this series Jake!
Marvel chaos is a fighting game that was supposed to have fully destructible environments but got cancelled for some reason
This is the second time I've had Marc Ecko's Getting Up referenced this week... so wild
Literally the third time for me lmao, I watch a comp of Super best friends play it, then on a podcast😂
The PSP game you mentioned is called Pursuit Force! Has such a special place in my heart. One of the reason Sleeping Dogs clicked with me so much too.
Damn, that Taxi Driver game sounded like a really cool concept too! Its a shame it got canceled, but yeah. That mid 2000s was such a huge boom of

I always think of Midway Games’ “Fear & Respect,” which was to be produced by John Singleton and starring Snoop Dogg as a lead character. The cancelled Sleeping Dogs 2 game is something that crushes my soul
Damn that series could've done so much 😭
14:20 lol I love how you reference uncle Ben's killer in the amazing Spider-Man movie specifically
Absolutely dying to see Marc Echo's Getting Up come back to consoles.
You have the best discussion topics bruh. Also would have rather had the THQ Avengers game that got cancelled than what we got lol
I personally feel THQs Avengers game would've been a much better game than square enixs live service Avengers game

Game was called 2 Days To Vegas. Was going to be the best shit ever man. It had my early teen self drooling haha.
I'd love to hear you talk about the daredevil game that was for the original Xbox.
I remember being pretty hyped about that Project H.A.M.M.E.R game that was supposed to come to Wii.
I don’t know if it got cancelled, but I still remember that post apocalyptic they showcased where you’re in a desert ridden city and you use poles to traverse buildings and shit. I think it was called I Am Alive or something like that
That got released a long time ago, but redone
I remember reading the write up in the Xbox magazine on the first person take on XCOM. The screenshots looked amazing I waited on the game for years and found out that it was cancelled and reverted it to the strategy style layout
Pretty sure it wound up becoming The Bureau, still an XCOM game but it’s a third person shooter. Came out 2013 I think.
You mentioned killing day!
A game that still lives in my mind.
Don't know if you've already covered this, but there was an Arkane / Steven Spielberg game where you played an alien that sounded amazing. The studio worked on it in the years between Dark Messiah and Dishonored. The graphics looked on a similar level to 8 Days
I still have Huxley, a planned Xbox 360 launch title permanantly seared into my brain. Just loved the idea of an FPS MMO for consoles.
City of the Dead! A zombie game in collaboration with George Romero (and initially American McGee) that featured Tom Savini and a mode where you could take out zombies like Burnout:
"One of the modes within City of the Dead mimics Burnout 3’s infamous Crash Mode and tasks players with killing as many zombies as possible with a single shot from a specific weapon."
:(
Taxi Driver would have been interesting!
Games about upholding the law aren't as common as the games about breaking it.
There just aren't any gritty & realistic vigilante games.
B.C. And DeadRush were two canceled games for the OGXBOX that I was looking forward to so much
Siphon filter definitely needs a comeback!!!!
“Getting up” is a term in the graffiti world for going out and painting, hence the title of Marc eckos graffiti game being, gettin up
Remember this game from a gameinformer magazine called Human Element which was supposed to be some multi-platform zombie apocalypse rpg with multiplayer features that sounded really cool but stayed in development hell for a few years and then just faded away
Charles Bronson or dirty Harry games would be dope
Romero's City of the Dead, Midway's open world Las Vegas Game, Dirty Harry, and GOW 2 director's Mad Max game are games I wish came out.
I remember getting the game informer that had a couple page article about Harker and and being super hyped. Still waiting
George A Romero’s City of the Dead! And I will die on this hill still wishing for this game and watching the trailer at least once an month 😅
I'd love to see a studio bring back 8 days, that could definitely be a game today!
Why are the cancelled games always the most intriguing ones? So many cancelled games feel like the would've been really fresh and unique.
This is the perfect kind of video to include Faith & A .45
