In this instance, I think Daniel is just going for simplicity with the "boat" whilst he gets to grips with the complexity of the electronics and tuning of the software, just as a proof of concept. I think the most suitable option would be to buy a commercially available "boat" of some description. Something like a bait boat used for fishing would be perfect.
Air boat is less efficient than an actual BOAT SHAPED boat. Motor in water creates more thrust than motor in air, due to density, that's why helicopters struggle at high altitudes: TWR decreases significantly.
Really great to see this video! I'm one of the main developers of ardupilot and I really appreciate the feedback on tuning issues with a low speed boat and how you got around them. Re seaweed getting stuck in the props, we have been thinking that maybe we could try and detect the loss of control and try spinning the props backwards. I'm not sure if that will work but it's probably worth us trying. Thanks again!!
There are several other comments about issues he missed that could cause that drift, like the high current wiring being close to the GPS, having the GPS bellow the water line and the metal foil cover, and not using a compass for a craft of such small size. I'm sure Ardupilot could be improved, but no need to overcompensate and mess up correct setups with good GPS and compass systems.
is it possible to create a "lane of travel" from point to point? basically to tell the 'object' that as long as its inside the lane (10 meters ether side of the object) to not correct, and the degree it corrects depends on how far outside the lane it goes. Should create a more gentle correction rather than a jagged wandering. I think this would drastically help correct the "gps wander correction" stuff.

The parameter is called WP_OVERSHOOT and it defaults to a very small 2m. When the vehicle goes outside that it slows down and attempts to get back within the lane. For sailboats (which AP also supports) we default this value to 10m but maybe we should make it at least 5m for all boats. Users can change this parameter on their own though of course. Thanks for bringing this up it hadn't occurred to me.

That 'seaweed' is called millfoil by the way, and it's an invasive species. It travels from lake to lake on boat props. So if you stay with the same lake it doesn't matter.

Dude you should make something yourself (if you haven't already) It's a great experience to make an RC Toy and just mess around with it. I made a 3D printed RC Speed and brought it to a park and had a bunch of kids chasing it around. It was hilarious outrunning them with it. 10/10 would RC again.

Using the compass will probably help with these. If it's only determining the heading based on GPS location, the slow speed makes it difficult to know the difference between it's own motive effect and being carried by water/wind currents. With a plane you can get away without using a compass because the vehicle is typically moving two or three times faster than the air around it, and can't make 90 degree (or more) turns like your skid steer can. But then assigning different GPS points that are at a much greater, corrective angle than those on the route should have little corrective effect if it has no sense of its relative motion. I suspect you're right that it's a factor, but I also suspect that using average hobby-level RC electronics for autonomous navigation sometimes turns out looking like this. It's not the first time I have observed this type of result, including with RC aircraft when operating autonomously for longer periods of time and distance than just a tour above an open field or two. Continuous evaluation of the impact of heading on course and applying an effective correction is obviously not as easy as it might seem. I have even observed some similar problems from older, inexpensive (uncertified) General Aviation units.
awesome tip i learned for keeping sea-weed and debris out of the motor: 3d print a cylinder shaped pocket with basically the same diameter (or slightly bigger) and then you dip the motor core in epoxy resin to seal it. an ROV club showed me that one. Only danger I can think of is over heating, but doesn't happen so far.
A vehicle that slow should use a compass. Distance between GPS measurements (speed) must be way greater than gps accuracy for "no compass" operation. Dont know if ardurover does gps-heading / gyro-heading data fusion. Your data sugessts it doesent. You need that for "low speed no compass" operation. Cant have your compass inside with high current wiring. The current will cause wrong compass readings and make your boat go in the wrong direction. Your compass could be in the round gps thing. Put that above the craft. Dont ask why i know.
The tip of the 2.4G antenna is bare metal. In the last segment you were moving things around and the antenna was flapping in the breeze. Get an antenna tube (a straw,) point it up, and fasten it down. That will provide more range, and prevent the bare metal from poking into other things with live electron action happening. Brilliant little hack, very cool.
A keel along the center line of the boat will help tracking especially in windy conditions. It would be fun to install a walkie talkie in the boat so you can talk to people as the boat passes by. That would get their attention! Maybe a car horn as well. Imagine a tiny boat sneaking up on someone and suddenly there's a blast of a loud horn. What fun!
to fix the wandering, can you give it a "lane" to travel, say 10 meters ether side of the boat, and instead of having a "wall" on each side, a slope, a bell curve if you will, when the boat wanders out of the lane, the degree it uses to correct the wander depends on how far outside the boundary it goes. I think this would create a more straight line from point to point.
Ok. You need to write sum code, so when it detects current spikes on a motor, it will stop and reverse both motors for a couple seconds, then start again. set that option to do it three times. Then if it's still getting current spikes, Have it stop, and send an sos message back to you. This is exciting stuff. GJ.

Wondering if you are from Southern Spain, because I am and I thought the same XD. I think they once used a model airplane to transport some kg of cocaine.
Because solar systems are NOT POWERFUL, a lot of people always fantasizing with the most inneficient ways to power vehicles xddd. Solar shit is nowhere close to the power you can get with a lipo battery + all the hassle and connections, voltage regulation, money, you have to deal with just for a few watts of energy.
Airboat is the way to go with this project. It may be not very efficient, but at least the propellers will not get blocked by this weeds. Also you can increase the efficiency by A LOT if you just use two plastic bottles as floaters.
I’d also suggest a flag or balloon or something, just to make it more visible to other water goers, avoid being run over by other boats and so such. Other than that, you can pretty much start setting goofy record with the little thing. Cross the English Channel, transatlantic crossings, stuff like that.
yeah some foam,and make it water-proof and rig up some kid of point toward front so it cuts water better and a couple rudders down in water to stabalize like a catamaran.love it
Jets will clog faster than your props, and you will lose about 15% efficiency by default. I would try raising the motors out of the water, extending the driver shafts, and running surface drive props. They can chew through the thin weeds, and are less likely to collect them. Also, if you put the tupperware in a planing flat bottom V hull made from foam, it would solve a lot of your problems.
If you are taking suggestions, I would go with a jet boat. You can use a huge mesh enclosure supplying both intakes so you can never starve just one and there should never be enough suction to actually clog the strainer.
You could probably put small sections of round pipe around your motors and impellers to push weeds out of the way before they get tangled in the spinning shaft. It may even increase the efficiency of your motors.

To prevent sinking you could throw a few chunks of fun noodle in there. That won't save the electronics but might get you something back when it sinks.
I would drill two holes on the sides with a thin rope attached to a foam ball so it can be recovered if sinks. It's a similar system to how hobbyist recover model rc boats. Also you can plastic dip some parts that aren't waterproof.

What if you had three and then used Bluetooth beacons like xyo sentinels or Tile pro to help with drift.
I know some GPS modules come with a compass too, thatd probably help with drifting about and help retain course stability.

Other than that, you can pretty much start setting goofy record with the little thing. Cross the English Channel, transatlantic crossings, stuff like that.
Made something similar as a catamaran. We won the competition in Univerity of Trondheim with it.

yeah some foam,and make it water-proof and rig up some kid of point toward front so it cuts water better and a couple rudders down in water to stabalize like a catamaran.love it
Jets will clog faster than your props, and you will lose about 15% efficiency by default. I would try raising the motors out of the water, extending the driver shafts, and running surface drive props. They can chew through the thin weeds, and are less likely to collect them. Also, if you put the tupperware in a planing flat bottom V hull made from foam, it would solve a lot of your problems.

If you are taking suggestions, I would go with a jet boat. You can use a huge mesh enclosure supplying both intakes so you can never starve just one and there should never be enough suction to actually clog the strainer.

You could probably put small sections of round pipe around your motors and impellers to push weeds out of the way before they get tangled in the spinning shaft. It may even increase the efficiency of your motors.

To prevent sinking you could throw a few chunks of fun noodle in there. That won't save the electronics but might get you something back when it sinks.

I would drill two holes on the sides with a thin rope attached to a foam ball so it can be recovered if sinks. It's a similar system to how hobbyist recover model rc boats. Also you can plastic dip some parts that aren't waterproof.

I have an airboat I made a few years back just collecting dust. Sounds like I could switch the esc to a car one and it should work. Steering is already with a servo. Cool video!
