But I would say the mysteries are largely surrounding the magnetic anomalies in the area, and also the fact that there are two sets of nearly identical looking islands but quite some distance apart which caused issues for dead-reckoning navigation. I don't recall hearing any incidents since modern navigation equipment such as GPS came in to common use.

I also wanted to see them knocked down by a following sea and then pop back up again. What do they do in the Horse latitudes? (the doldrums) Do they need to hove to in a squall? What type of proximity sensors do they have? How do they navigate through shoals? Can they take advantage of tides? I have lots of questions.

    5:45 "they behave really predictably and safely around ships" ... this point needs some further clarification.
    Does it know the collision regulations, can it communicate with other vessels, can it reliably detect vessels both on and off AIS and act accordingly?

    • @JB-jn9kb
      @JB-jn9kb 5 лет назад +3

      I'm pretty sure what this means is if other ships come near it, it will avoid you in an attempt to not be seen. I can't imagine some of the people out their on the high seas just letting one of these sail by. Some of these pirates will pluck it from the water, scrap it for parts, and sell them. Damn things are full of high dollar electronics that are worth a fortune. Like a floating gold mine waiting to be harvested. Things obviously have radar to some degree, and I'm pretty sure if you get near it, a sensor will detect you and snap a photo. Investors are going to want to know they have some type of security with these investments. I'm pretty sure the thing has an array of sensors that he won't even disclose for that one reason.

      There already has been a costly collision with a salmon vessel and one in Drakes Bay. Costly for the fisherman. The drone just got scratched TF up.

  • @joshuagift5635
    @joshuagift5635 4 года назад +2

    At roughly 6 min the claim is made that these vessels have had no accidents or incidents. This is not true. Last year, in Drakes bay, during the final weeks of commercial salmon season, there was an incident involving the 55foot steel fishing vessel Aurora. The collision involved the sail drone cutting behind the commercial vessel with gear deployed. This drone was certainly scratched as wires and cables, fishhooks, floats, and a lead were dragged over it. The salmon vessel lost one float, one 30lb lead, 60ft cable, and assorted bait equipment.
    The saildrone did as it was programmed to do and passed astern of the vessel. However, it failed to take the fishing gear into account, either because the program does not recognize the configuration of a fishing vessel or because it is programmed to get too close to an unidentified vessel that may be dragging something. This is a hazard that can also entangle the coast guard or vessel assist or a tug+tow as well.

    I always wondered if larger versions of these unmanned sea drones, would have "submarine" capabilities, to instruct the drone submarine to move to a certain point, DIVE, then follow a plotted path across the sea, Rise and then dock. These will be able to transport or smuggle packages across oceans, undetected by radars and coast guards. like how aerial drone are being used to drop off packages, these will be the underwater versions. You wont need a crew for them, or food for the long voyage.

    One day instead of manned nuclear submarines carrying many nuclear missiles. You'll have drone submarines carrying a missile, that can go anywhere, underwater without ever coming to the surface to fire its missile.

    A brilliant genius idea. It's easy to ask a negative question, and only from my amateur perspective... but there are amazing satellites now days that monitor the oceans. Aren't there satellites that can remotely do the same job? How is the data collected by the sailboats better than what can be gathered by satellites? The sailboats are an ingenious design, but hundreds of them all over the world? Would this be then data in conjunction with or subcontracting to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, the "NOAA"? Thanks for this fine video and for caring about the planet!

    • @Mike-oz4cv
      @Mike-oz4cv 5 лет назад

      Satellites are expensive and have limited resolution and coverage. Vision is easily blocked by clouds. I don’t know how accurately (if at all) satellites can measure parameters like water temperature, currents, wind speed, humidity etc.
      That being said, I don’t see the advantage of a *moving* sensor/weather station like these drones. Stationary buoys (if the ocean is shallow enough to anchor them) should be cheaper and much more reliable.

    A stupid drone has as much responsibility to follow the rules of the sea. Unmanned vehicle keep clear doesn't cut it. There are navigation rules and drones should follow them as well.
