      The flat bottom is mainly due to repairs in the dock. Imagine how difficult it would be to subject e.g. 75 thousand-ton ship. And the second reason is that the ship has as little draft as possible.

    • @123TeeMee
      @123TeeMee 3 года назад +16

      @cheesedoff-with4410 3 года назад +4

      Bird avoidance might be an issue if operating in twilight/darkness; model ekranoplans operate extremely close to the surface. Even during the day other water users might not be able to avoid a speedy surface skimmer.
      An autonomous ekranoplan is something I'd love to see, but adding speed and spinning blades to the mix complicates matters considerably. Of course it depends on where and when it's flown.

      The problem with an ekranoplan is that the scale starts to matter alot. The full size version could comfortably sit in ground effect at 20+ft off the water, but when you scale that down, it'd have to stay no more than a few inches, which puts it in danger of hitting even the slightest ripple.

    I'm no naval architect (though I did consider becoming one at some point), but I have spent a fair bit of time studying the mechanics of stability for boats, and how different hull shapes affect their properties.
    The design you ended up with, I would say is actually quite suitable for this mission. I would not at all be surprised if it is self righting. The reason being a very low CG combined with narrow beam and tall sides. I think it would be interesting to see you test how far over you can heel the boat before it capsizes (and how much effort it takes).
    Now as to why your Initial iterations failed. Your boat has a very narrow beam compared to its height, and I suspect the weight of the hull it self was a significant part of the mass. Thus you had a CG far above a very narrow waterline. What containerships do is have a much wider waterline compared to the height of the CG, and in fact the nearly rectangular crossection is what gives the most stability for a given beam. The reason being that they have much of their buoyancy located far from the centerline, much like a catamaran. As the boat heels, therefore tha center of buoyancy (CB) shifts quickly towards the low side to compensate. Also consider container ship CG isn't as high as it may appear, considering containers are filled with lots of low density materials, and many actually float quite well. While the heavy bits like engines, hull and tanks are located low in the hull.
    Rounded and V-shaped hulls are also popular, but have less stability for a given beam. This may sometimes be desirable, as a very stable vessel will heel quite aggressively with the waves from the side, while a less stable vessel will sway more gently.
    If you are to make an improved version that doesn't need ballast, I suggest you do some napkin-math to figure out what displacement you need, and make sure the beam if your vessel is at least twice the draft, and make sure it doesn't have unnecessary amounts of freeboard, probably not more than the beam. Also make the hull as long as you can practically make it. That back and forth bobbing would be greatly reduced that way, and both the speed and efficiency should go up a good bit, while also creating smaller waves.

    Please don't take this as criticism in any way. I really enjoy watching your videos and I've been subbed since the early days of your depron scratch builds such as your micro drone FPV video...
    when I watch these videos I feel invested in the project and always wish you well... I'd love to see another autonomous boat series after this one. May I suggest a catamaran design for the next one? This could be either 2x long hulls joined in the middle, or a single moulded catamaran design where the centre section is actually part of the mould design.
    either way, I think the catamaran would be a lot more stable and having a footprint similar to a square/rectangle with effectively 4 points of contact (the bow and stern of each hull) keeping it super stable in almost all conditions.
    you could have a motor/prop coming out the stern of each hull, and if they're far enough apart they would provide more turning capability with less relative power (relative to each other) in order to turn the boat.
    Thinking about all of this is making me want to do it myself but I just don't have the resources and ardu knowledge that you do...
    I genuinely wish you luck on your next boat project, keep up the good work.
    Thanks for reading, bye.

  • @Lux158

    The thing that container boats, with a nearly flat bottom, let be stable are the proportions.. your vessel is around two times as high as it is wide.. you can see that the containervessles are usually as wide as tall or a bit wider.. that results in other problems (that they can’t drive along a side wave without rolling)..
    So if you build a second one, and I think you should.. it looks cool and I bet you can build a better boat next time!
    Look at directions of these container boats, since it is a pretty simple shape, if it has to less buoyancy make it longer (that also could help with your speed, and these weird jumping)

    Thanks for another entertaining Vid!
    As a boat skipper/owner who has sailed round the UK, let me mention: Yes a keel would give directional (yaw) stability-BUT who needs that when the direction is under successful, active control? There's massive roll stability due to all the batteries low down in the hull. Are those strapped down? if so it will always come back up no matter what. otherwise a big wave could turn is over and it would get stuck upside down.
    BTW look around the market, the next hull you mentioned at the end already exists somewhere I think.

    A keel board or strakes wouldn't have to be ridiculous to improve the handling of this boat. The simplest would be a 1/2" x 1/2" square strip of board glued down the middle of the bottom (tapered to the hull fore and aft to avoid weed of coarse). The water rudder would be an order of magnitude more efficient if it reached out into the slip stream more (get out of the suck zone). Easiest way to do this would be to extend it down till about an inch is below the hull (again tapered to avoid weed collecting). And for goodness sakes, put some z bends in that control linkage! You're seriously doing very cool things with these, good work.
