    I have read something like this about Vikings:
    Courage, strength and enthusiasm, very loyal to fellow tribesmen and leaders. A strong sense of honesty when dealing with each other. Particular reverence for their wives and their conception of marriage made possible close cooperation and companionship between husband and wife. Great powerful individualists - this is their weakness as well as their strength. Felt hurt by any attempt to curtail their freedom of action. Capable of great self-discipline and cheerfully accept adversity. Had a strong sense of human dignity and the sanctity of family relationships. Men and women quick in understanding and aptitude for mystical thinking as well as for exact scientific work.
    Although I am Dutch, this really appeals to me.
    Must be the Viking in me :-)

    I understand friend, I’m Native Hawaiian but in the mainland it’s a common stereotype that Hawaiians are violent people and that real Hawaiian don’t exist anymore. I get really confused seeing that I exist and that I was never raised to be a violent person but I can defend myself if I have to if all common decency and diplomacy has gone out the window. The one thing I can say is that we have a lot of foreigners here and most of the time especially in family we go unseen, we work and then we go home a family outing is rare thing we rarely go out for recreation and we do it’s usually to a beach we regularly visit.😅

    I am American. However, my heritage is Norwegian, Swedish, French, Polish, German and Dutch. Norwegian, Dutch and German being the thickets bloodline. I am very PROUD to be of Viking decent. I think the culture (past the raiding and pillaging) is quite lovely. I will NEVER let anyone tell me I shouldn't be Proud of my heritage, or who my ancestors were. Through all of known history of men, everyone raided and fought and took land, look at the Roman Empire. We cannot change what our ancestors did 20 years ago, or 200 years ago. What we all can do is honor our own ancestors, their memories, beautiful traditions, and be good people today and show the beautiful cultures of our ancestors around the world and respect other peoples heritages and customs and how beautiful they all are.

    The difference between the word Norse and the word Viking is not just a woke thing, it makes clear that there are Norse people and culture who go back far far further than the Viking age, as I am sure you are aware. Over fixation on the Viking age means the Bronze and Iron ages, which are fascinating, are often overlooked. Also that there were a lot of Old Norse people who were just people, farming, making shoes, weaving, etc, without being professional warriors. The modern Viking image is definitely a real beast in and of itself, likely more prevalent today than in the Viking age. Personally I use both words in context but not interchangably. Sure someone can be a modern Viking especially if they are willing to challenge someone to hand to hand combat 😉 Most people calling themselves Vikings today really don't fit the bill. However my understanding is that the word Viking was offensive to a lot of men of the Viking age who would have called themselves Drengr. Curious to hear your commentary on this. I will also go listen to the interview to hear more commentary on the subject, I love that podcast.

I am always mistaken for Greek or some other Mediterranean/ Middle Eastern but I’m Hiberno Scots on my paternal side(they are all very pink skinned and Danish/Scottish from my maternal side. This is the side that gives me my sunburn proof complexion. This side also makes me (via folklore) a descendant of the family of Sweyn Asliefson ( the ultimate Viking). I've just noticed and starting following this discussion. I've found through ancestry and DNA testing that I have Scandinavian ancestors (maybe through Rollo, or other Scandinavians, as my ancestry "research" shows?). Some have questioned if I'm a racist because I talked about it a lot at the time. I was fascinated to see my connection with known historical figures. Led me to deeper study into our history. I always have pointed out that I don't think anyone's ancestry makes any person on iota better than anyone else's. There is no superior DNA, which I'm sure you agree with. It is highly unfortunate that some bigots have cut & pasted some of the recent studies to support their wacky and dangerous supremacy myths and fascistic nationalism. Then there's the squeeze to try to fit the break-through research into some popular but narrow views in academia. I believe in political correctness as polite consideration. But not to try to turn some mistranslated words, or a couple of grave sites with honored women, into hordes of female Vikings, as a fairly recent example. Balance, and being understood in these days of widespread "social media" madness, is no easy task, is it, min man? Thanks for your research and efforts. Mange takk!

    • @VikingStories
      @VikingStories  3 года назад +1

      Good words. I also agree, there is no superior DNA and the discussion has become ridiculous for so many with a pure interest in history, especially the need for a small percentage of people who always seem to want to judge people in the worst sense. I takes courage and brave acts to speak with a firm voice, and unfortunately I see many scholars who don't dare or who simply don't bother, understandably so.. It's easier perhaps to let it play out and wait until things (and people) calm down. But we shouldn't in any case accept everything, such as that there were no Norwegian Vikings :)

    During late summer vi were on a day trip to Varnhem Abbey in Skara. Skaraborg, Västra götelands län in Sweden. They have been archeologically excavating for a few years and it was and is a major breakthrough that changes the history that was taught about how Christianity came to Sweden. They viking graves they discovered were from cirka 900 ad and the burials were traditionally Christian. This was all new information. They suspect some kind of English missionary had come to that area as the foundation of a small church was built according to English building understanding and made of stone with a "crypt' or basement. I found it really facinating. What are your thoughts on that?

  • @cplmackinnon
    @cplmackinnon 4 года назад +3

    I understand what you are saying, but like the paper you participated in reinforces, being a viking was an occupation. When is the last you went abroad to trade furs and pillage a small defenseless place? Although, I would agree it's possible to think like what you assume the viking mentality was. But the point is, mentalities of the past are mostly unknown and extremely fragmentary. In any case, I also believe we can all live our lives according to the the values we want.

    • @onearmdaddy
      @onearmdaddy 4 года назад +1

      We have elaborate Viking sagas plus other historic writing to understand how they thought. A lot can be learned from the mythologies they kept alive through oral tradition for hundreds of years before finally putting them on paper.

    • @cplmackinnon
      @cplmackinnon 4 года назад +1

      @@onearmdaddy As much as sagas are absolutely invaluable sources, they probably do not faithfully reflect mentalities of vikings. Theses texts do not come from them, but from centuries later. Furthermore, the only sources that come from the vikings themselves are rune stones (which are extremely scarce in details), and archaeological material. The latter is probably the best way to learn more about vikings, but in no way does it inform us on how they thought.

    • @jamesdavis4598
      @jamesdavis4598 3 года назад

      Noone here is speaking old norse, therefore, what the word "meant" in that language that pretty much noone but academics even speak anymore (no, Icelandic is not "the same") is only as relevant as the 1000 year old entomology of any other word.
      "Viking" is not a verb and has come to mean something else in the related languages a full millennium after the usage of which SO many people just have to remind us.
      Since it's literally a corrective comment in literally every single forum in which the word "viking" is used, can we please consider the subject sufficiently disseminated now?

    • @cplmackinnon
      @cplmackinnon 3 года назад +2

      @@jamesdavis4598 I didn't really touch that matter, but we can talk about it. Even today, the term viking describes an activity. And even in the middle ages, after the "viking age" the term viking was used in old norse to precisely describe a form of piracy and bandit activity.
      "Viking" is often used as an adjective (viking, ship, viking food, viking whatever). I think the point of this video is to denounce the load of clichés that are widespread about that word. What I am saying is that you can believe that there is such a thing as viking philosophy, and you can certainly choose to live by the principles that you attribute to it. It just doesn't hold a weighty scientific value. And of course we can deduce certain values that are obviously important to this culture, but it is very shallow, and we are a bit far from being able to produce the full picture of an old norse system of values.

    Keep up the great videos!! I will be waiting for the next one. Along with the completion of your DNA research, which I know will be awhile yet!!😁

    Fridtjof means (very directly translated) something like Peace Thief or Love Thief. Frid=Peace or Love, tjof=Thief. I once climbed to the top of the foundation on that statue btw.

    If you are of Scandinavian descent, you can be Viking. If not, you can act as Viking. Either way, it's about values and actions and not really about the definition. I'm not entirely sure the Danes referred to themselves as Viking. It was more something you did and not what you are. A Dane could go Viking and then becomes a farmer or fisherman. Anyway, don't let the comment section get you down. It's mostly just digital vomit. Except mine, of course. :p

    Call yourself a Viking? I bet you haven't raided an English monastery, drank from a skull, pillaged a village or even introduced an Irish nun to the deck of your longboat ever in your entire life!
    All joking aside, great channel.
    Thanks for the fine content.

    Excellent video! And it does my heart good to know that there are more and more people of European descent exploring and rediscovering the roots of their rich history, religion, and culture, and also applying that knowledge to their day to day lives (a culture that is very obviously under fire from the woke/liberal/left). I'm glad people such as yourself, Bjorn Andreas Bull-Hansen, and others are still educating people on this history and culture, despite the backlash from the clueless and reactionary woke mob.

    I am sticking with Raider. If I believe my DNA matches, it’s on the border of Denmark/ Germany. So I could be both a Raider and Germanic.

    This is common sense. You cannot become crusaders or vikings.
    However you can become warrior and protector of your culture and country.
