China's Tech Giant Alibaba Goes Offline With New Supermarkets (HBO)

  • Chinese tech giant Alibaba has accomplished what most other online retailers can only dream of: it’s integrated online shopping with brick-and-mortar stores.
    Shoppers at the behemoth's Hema Supermarkets still find all the goods you’d expect in a regular grocery store - only they have to download the app to shop there, and they can't pay in cash.
    Like Hema, many of the various ventures owned by Alibaba - founded by China’s richest man, Jack Ma - are already a part of daily life in the country, and almost indispensably so. The company owns some of the world’s largest online marketplaces, all while running one of the two mobile payment systems that have all but replaced cash.
    All of this means that Alibaba has amassed a trove of personal data on millions of consumers, and so far, the customers don’t seem to mind, even as Alibaba’s reach grows. The conglomerate plans on rolling out 100 of these supermarkets by the end of the year.
    VICE News headed to Shanghai to check out whether these much-hyped supermarkets are as high-tech - or innocuous - as they seem.

      @@youmemeyou What is China Uncensroed lying about specifically?! It's not like the news that's said isn't already being said and most of the news savy people are aware of what's been going on in the topics he's stated like the "re-educating" muslims and the IP stealing which you can see first hand especially with the car rip offs. All it's done is show the obvious going on's like authoritarianism growing under Xi which is hard to deny.
      Boy the 50 centers are going strong in this comment section. It's unfair that China censors what the west has to say but then they will openly go onto western platforms to prop up opinion. The double standards are silly and concerning around the CCP.

    • @youmemeyou
      @youmemeyou 5 лет назад +14

      @@jungoogie bruh, China Uncensored simply blows everything out of proportion. If you see their other channel America Uncovered, they don't cover the atrocities covered by the US as much as what they cover in China Uncensored. Of course China will censor West's propaganda against the country otherwise their filthy media will destroy what this magnificent country has achieved up until now. All your shitty news channels have never even once shown China's progress in a positive way. The white supremacists never wants Asian countries to rise. If any other Asian nation was rising in place of China the West will do the exact same thing. A good example is the US sanction to India's Nuclear Development program. Thank God, India became a nuclear super power without the US ever knowing it. Another good example is of trade war with Japan in the 1980's. I do accept the fact that China has stolen IP but not as much as the western media shows and I also accept the fact that their are human rights violations but compared to what their is to it in China, the West directly bombs civilian areas commiting more human rights violations, leaving thousands of people displaced throughout the globe. If you guys want to point the finger to others, why not look into the mirror first.
      Last but not the least, the authoritarian Xi eliminated millions of people out of poverty. What has your democratically elected president achieved up until now?

    • @jungoogie
      @jungoogie 5 лет назад +1

      @@youmemeyou I like to keep topics specific not an endless loop of what-about-isms. We all know America has it's problems. Point still stands. What is China Uncensored lying about specifically? The muslim "re-education camps" are very much a thing and everyone knows of the IP theft going strong there just looking at the car market there for one example. I'm not going to get into the what-about-ism's in what China is or isn't doing or the US.... this pertains to the topic of China Uncensored and the facts it presents and the validity of it.
      Now that I know you're a 50 center, why don't you be a good "Chinese Citizen" and stick to your intranet because we in the west shouldn't have to hear your opinions when you squelch out ours in China. The double standards is concerning and pathetic. You are afraid we will spread "propaganda" there but you have no quells for sharing your "opinions" on western platforms. How can anyone really take China seriously when they shut themselves off to outsiders but get to also share there opinions with the rest of us?

    lol wtf hema is a discount store in the netherlands and is one of the most recognisable logo's here, and this logo looks almost exactly the same

      Sam Zwart / GoNova hema literally means hippopotamus in chinese. Unless it happens to have the same meaning in dutch, i doubt it copied the discount store. Alibaba’s sub brands always have something to do with animals, like skycat, hippos, and another one with pig.

    Nah, I want people to serve me food, people to check out my order, people to look at and talk to while I'm at the grocery store. Why we all act like this is cool?

    I can see why this level of convenience is important in a place like China where people are tripping over each other, in other countries not so much

    what's the point of stocking shelves and then sending employees to pick up things? having behind the scenes warehouse would skip a step and make the store less crowded.

    • @jinniwind
      @jinniwind 5 лет назад

      Oona there are still people who come in physically and shop around themselves. This is not a pure online grocery store. They have a food court where your freshly picked seafood (and other dishes) is cooked and served to you right away.
