Classic Movie Review: Once again, Joan Crawford wallows in the underworld with some very questionable characters in Vincent Sherman’s “The Damned Don’t Cry,” 1950. Surrounded by a bevy of handsome thugs, that include David Brian, Richard Egan and hunkie Steve Cochran, Joan tries seduces them all with varying degrees of success as she works her way up from cigarette girl to gangsters moll in this quintessential Fabulous Film Noir! TCM could use Steve Hayes, always very funny and informative while delivering insights that provide a solid back story.
I so agree and wish they'd boot Ben Mankiewicz out the door!!
Tony Edelbrock I might even start watching again...Ben ain’t no Steve
There is room for everyone...I love Mank. It's that Australian chick that needs to go!
@@0akland1 Thanks you so much!
Thanks alot!
You are so right about that one. In fact she reminds me of Barbara Graham - her in real life. Joan Crawford for anyone who thinks she wasn't a first class actress should see her in this. Her timing in her delivery of dialogue is to perfection. And her degree of emotion was perfect - her face when her boy is run over has more than an hysterical scream. Her maternal instinct is perfectly portrayed in her face and all in just a couple of seconds. She is sensational in this and the picture has constant menace just behind every scene as it plays out.
Love Joan !❤
If I had to choose one word to describe Joan Crawford the Hollywood star (as opposed to Crawford the actress), that word would be GLAMOUR. In this film there are two scenes where her beauty and glamour are breathtaking. The first is at the casino where she first meets the Steve Cochran character and the other is the following poolside scene again with Cochran. Even at nearly fifty years of age, Crawford's incredible face is mesmerizing!
Absolutely! And when she had handsome co-stars like Cochran, to flirt with, it brought out the best in her.
I wish TCM would bring Steve's passion and humor to their hosting roster. He's the best!
Thank you so much!
Definitely!😊👍
@@almi3767 You know he could be the next Robert Osborne.
I miss Robert Osborne he was the best
Nobody's doing this wonderful commentary! Only Steve. Johnny's wonderful also❤
The Damned Don't Cry is my favorite comfort food old movie. Crawford is just stunning in it. Camera loves her as always.
Yup. Hurrell always said she had the perfect face, you could shoot it from any angle, though , I must admit, I don't think those butch, short, early '50's hairdos did anyone of a "certain age" any favors. Joan is all out gutsy and great in this! Thanks so much! Steve
Great Quote: Jacqueline de Witt, urging Joan to become a model..."You got what it takes to make a peplum swing!"
Another great quote is, "It's still modeling, it just pays better at night."
She's so great! She's also terrific and the gossip in "All That Heaven Allows" !
Steve. You made this presentation so interesting that I must see this film . Thank you.
You'll like it!
Robert Delisle yes,he tends to do that
I agree! From 1945 to 1950 she did Mildred Pierce, Humoresque, Possessed, Daisy Kenyon, Flamingo Road, The Damned Don't Cry and Harriet Craig. In my opinion, all her best melodrama's. Her movies at Warner's (also 20th Century and Columbia) were so much better, then at MGM.
They really gave her something to sink her dramatic teeth into and she did it with relish.
Steve, so glad you love this movie. I have loved it for years (it's almost as good as Mildred Pierce) and most people didn't know anything about it. Glad you are promoting it. Many thanks!
Yeah. Crawford gives a really gutsy performance!
This is one of my favorite Crawford movies. Thank you for the great review, Steve!
One of mine too!
At 4.50, anyone else think that the actress Steve is describing in the Harvey Girls is in that frame the absolute spitting image of Mary Astor?
Edit: pretty sure that IS Mary Astor. With Garland in Meet Me in St Louis.
I always believed they borrowed the idea of David Brian opening the window because Crawford is overly-perfumed from Mr. Skeffington, which Vincent Sherman directed a few years earlier. This is definitely one of Crawford's best films of the 50's. In my opinion, she made her best films at Warner Brothers.
I totally agree. From "Mildred Pierce" through her Warner's tenure and to the end of the '50's, She was magnificent.
Strong agree.
I watched the last 15 seconds of this video four times, and let me tell ya, if I weren't already madly in love that laugh would have pushed me over the edge. Vicodin, schmicodin - your laugh actually kills my pain!
OMG! That is so terrific! Thanks you so much!
Steve and Johnny you're making our time in the covid lighter- bless you both.
Always so nice to hear and makes our day!
love ya Steve glad you're making these still!!
pwookie keep ‘em coming, Steve
Thanks so much, Pwookie! I love doing them and am so glad the people seem to like them . If they lead them back to the films, that makes me so happy!
Loving your reviews Steve. The Damned Don't Cry is one of my favorite Joan noirs.
This film, along with "Possessed," are my two favorite Crawford films! I recall reading, some years back, that Joan put 110% of herself into the project (as she did with most of the films she made) but later came to feel it had been a "mistake," which she didn't elaborate on. For me, it's Film Noir at it's best! Thanks!
The close up in the Harvey girls is Mary Astor
that pic was probably taken from"Meet me in St.Louis"
I've recently subscribed. I just LOVE your delivery and synopsis...but those end bits are so funny. Love your laugh and thanks for your work!
My pleasure! Thanks for subscribing!
the damned dont cry is a joan crawford tour de force
SO TRUE
Neck and neck with Mildred Pierce. M
Yes, I think so too.
Steve Cochran was also great in White Heat. He was a player in real life as well. Died young in a tragic and macabre death
Yup. He was a 'bad boy".
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ "Mr. King Size"
Lovely to see another video from you.
Steve, you are SO awesome. That laugh at the end killed me!
Thanks so much!
Thank you, Mr. Hayes. Highly entertaining, as usual!
My pleasure. I hope you have delightful holidays! Steve
This made my day! One of my favorie scenes is when she says to the cpa: what kind of self respect is there in living living in aspirins and chicken salad sandwiches..... Love this movie! Thank you.
Sure! So glad you're watching!
Thank you for mentioning Harriet Craig. For the longest time The Women and Mildred Pierce (ya know, the usual fare) were my favorite Joan flicks. . .until I watched Harriet Craig in the early part of last year. WOW, where had that one been hiding my whole life? Soooo good. But now I may have to check out The Damned Don't Cry as it looks equally twisty and wonderful!
This one ranks among them.
Steve I love your impressions...and how they all become Susan Hayward, who then turns into your Mother. You are a riot! Stay well!
That's the way it goes sometimes...could'a been Maria Ouspenskaya! LOl!
Great review. Just love the look on her face after David Brian insults her. Great catch on Jacqueline DeWit and her excellent contribution to Damned.
Jaqueline is always good. I especialy love her in " All That Heaven Allows".
Fun picture that really moves along, and with a cast that seem to be enjoying themselves. And Steve Cochran...OMG...Swoonworthy. A rich man's Colin Farrell!
Steve Cochran ❤❤
Hunky Hunkerton!
I can’t take my eyes off Steve Cochran. I believe he had many Hollywood flings.
Entertaining and informative as always, Steve.
Thank you!
One of my FAVORITE Joan films...♥️
Thank you! I can't wait to see this! We need a recommendation once a week!! Pleasssseee!
I do as many as I can whenever I can. So glad you like them!
Steve! I love your reviews, especially anything to do with Joan. Keep 'em comin'!!
TOQ, I just got back from outer space where I learned you 're having a planet named after you because you are so HEAVENLY.
Flattery will get you the stratosphere!
One of the great pleasures of watching TOQ is Steve's backstories and spotlighting of character actors. Tropical storm Elsa may be hitting Miami Beach, but I'm too busy watching this.
OMG! Albert, you are the bestest! Thanks so much, as always and watch out for Elsa! OXOXOX Steve
Love your videos!
Can you please do Splendor in the Grass?
Thanks! It's on my list!
Love the fit of giggles at the end--so silly. :-)
Thanks!
OMG, hi guys! Super excited about this new video! Thanks guys!! Kisses, kisses, kisses! Love ya bunches!
One Sunday morning in 1963, when I was 9 years old, I turned on the TV and watched about the last third of this movie. For some reason it kind of gave me a revelation / understanding for the first time that things change over time. I knew Joan was supposed to be wealthy but my first illogical thought was, why is she driving an old car like that 1950 Mercury or Lincoln? My brother naturally informed me that it had been a new car when the movie was made. Oh yeah…and that started me on a lifetime of eventually becoming a historian.
Well, you never know where things lead to. Happy Holidays and thanks for sharing! Steve
Always a hoot … Love this reviews Steve .
“ Christina, bring me the Axe 🪓 “ . Haha 😝
Nevermind Christina, she should use it on some of the men she has to deal with in this melodrama...except Steve Cochran. So hot!
Good lord, this is *one* movie? Sounds like a description for all the seasons of a night-time drama series!
Yup! It runs the gamut!
I'm French ... but I'm generous. lol I was a waitress and I know why he's defending the French. Don't hate me, you know its true lol Loved the laughing jag Steve, very infectious lol Great review, I could listen to you talk all day long.:o)
Thanks so much!
Steve looked like a cross between Tyrone and Elvis.
That's interesting and on the mark! So handsome and sexy!
Right you are!
Another wonderful movie and review! Thanks Steve, you made my day!
Thanks for watching, you made mine!
thank you Steve. you're the best! i just watched The Damned Don't Cry again and I love Joan when she says to her co-worker "aaah shadd-upp!"
LOL! I love that and the actress who she says it Jacquelne de Wit. She plays the gossip in "All This And Heaven Too"! Thanks so much! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Yes! I remember her from "All This and Heaven Too" now. Thanks again!
@@haintedhouse2990 My pleasure! Any Jackie deWit fan is a friend of the TOQ! Happy Summer! Steve
That’s a significant turning point for Joan’s character in the story. It’s a really abrupt switch from her being scared and uncertain to tough and back-stabbing. To me it’s almost too abrupt, even though it’s great.
@@hebneh true i've thought the same thing before like she learned the ropes a little too quick. and yes I also still think it's great. guess they didn't have time to show Joan slowly becoming streetwise.
She was quite pretty in her younger days, but can't see how, by any stretch of the imagination, how men would be falling left and right for Joan Crawford in this movie. In her later films I always thought she looked like a drag queen, but she really was a fantastic actress and one of my favorites.
Yup! I can watch her in just about anything...and have.
Joanie! Well hello Joanie

You are fun Steve! Thanks for explaining the movie... I just watched it... great film!! Joan...is so dramatic! Love the mink..and convertible cars! Martini's and cigarettes!!!
Yeah, the glam of Vegas in the '50's. Fun!
Wow I'll have to check this out thanks Steve!
Great! Thanks for watching!
Love the positive perspective on this film always thought it was good too but it's never seems to be included as one of her best. If I had to pick my favorites they would be Flamingo Road, Mildred Pierce, Possessed, Strange Cargo, Baby Jane, Sudden Fear, Humoresque, Johnny Guitar, the Best of Everything all 10 minutes of her on screen, and The Women.
Dear Darwin, I've always liked this film too and thought she should have been nominated in 1950 for wither this of "harriet Craig" . As to your Crawfod list, I agree with all your choices but one. Not bad! And just to torture you, I'm not going to tell you the one I'm not that fond of! LOL!Thanks fo watching and Happy New Year! Best Wishes; Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 don't make me beg, please please...it's probably my guilty favorite Flamingo Road??
Love Joan in this. Also, Steve Cochran wasn't just cute. He was hot as hell. Any movie that he's in, he's just smoking hot.
Indeed he was. WOOF!
I LOVE me some TIRED OLD QUEEN !!!!
Awwww, thanks Ray!
Would you ever review Queen Bee with Joan Crawford? Or Johnny Guitar? Love that movie
I could be persuaded. LOL! It's on my 'to do" list! Thanks for watching! Stay SAFE & Best wishes; Steve
Queen Bee was the first Joan Crawford movie I watched. "Any man's my man if I want it that way." I heard Christina Crawford had to leave because she found Joan's character too true to live- but I loved it.
one of my all time favorites - thank you - don't stay away so long
I won't!
One of my very most favorite movies of all time!
Well great, I seem to be on a winning streak with you! Hooray!!! Steve
Okay, Steve. How could you overlook the outrageously sexy Steve Cochran in this movie???
The sun was in my eyes. The wind was too strong.....LOL!
Steve Cochran was a famous loverboy of legendary 'endowments'. I'm sure Joan was intrigued by his reputation.
Whadda' hunk! He had that incredible head of black hair. Drove me nuts!
Tell me! Steve Cochran is so hot in this picture he makes me weak in the knees. I struggled through Mamie Van Doren’s terrible autobiography just because someone told me she “tells all” about Cochran. I should have saved my time, because the only thing I learned was that he liked it rough. I’m going to name my next cat “Lorna Hanson Forbes.” How gay is that?
@@mdtdbe The only inside dirt I have on Cochran is that he was huge.

I really wish Joan had been nominated for this but the most egregious sinnis that she wasn’t nominated for “A Woman’s Face.”
Shows you what they thought of her by the early 40s. She was on her....third reinvention at that point? 🤣
Yes, she could easily have been nominated for this and from what I can gather she thought so too. She also did "Harriet Craig" the same year, but in 1950, competition was too tough. As for "A Woman"s Face", she was fighting a losing battle. MGM was ready to be done with her. So, she had to wait for the Warner Years to prove herself again and get the serious recognition she deserved. Even then, the only thing MGM offered her after she left Warners and proved herself again with a nomination for "Sudden Fear" was "Torch Song", which she tried hard to pull off, but... She was also foolsh at times. At that time, she lost the Deborah Kerr part in "From Here To Eternity", becuase she raised a fuss and wanted a glamourous wardrobe. Harry Cohn, head of Columbia, wasn't putting up with any of her star nonsense and replaced her, leaving Zinnemann free to cast against type, which proved to be an excellent idea. Thanks for watching!
Agreed! I always have my personal favorites of Joan and Bette, then I have, what I think are their best performances. “A Woman’s Face”, she blew me away. I remember sitting up and thinking , ‘oh my God, she can act!’ Lol
