Flashback.....1993.... I'm 21 yrs old..... I'm in Atlanta, Georgia playing in a garage band. We're trying to be the "Next Big Band" .... This song and ALL OF the bands from this year are inspiring us....... It doesn't happen...... We didn't make it big. It's okay, we had flippen fun, and the bands that did make it..... Good for them!
I’m confused. Is this your regular job, making videos? I went into “patreon “ link and I didn’t go any further. Basically, I can contribute to a coffee fund for you and then you will consider looking up the artist and playing the song request?
Of course Billy Corgan is a super talented songwriter and guitarist, but the deeper you go down the Smashing Pumpkins rabbit hole, you’ll find that Jimmy Chamberlin is one the greatest rock drummers to ever do it. His sense of swing and feel is next level, and some of his hand and foot combinations are mind boggling. He’s huge part of what makes them great.
@@starla9 I started to hear that more after seeing them play live and watching how often he rooted that swing feel with either an 8th note or 16th note pulse with his left foot on the high hat. John Bonham also did that on a lot of Zeppelin songs. Once you become aware of it, it’s impossible not to hear and sounds so great incorporated into rock music.
Hell yeah, the drummer is almost always what makes a band either good or legendary and Jimmy's one the best to ever do it. So glad he made it through the rough times.
@@pablozee6359 It's so great. Really different feeling to the music. For a long time, it really frustrated me. I was getting into listening to and playing drums, but I mostly listened to post-hardcore, punk, alternative type bands. I could mimic their drumming, or anticipate on instinct. But I cannot with SP at all. Jimmy Chamberlain has such different instincts, different emphasis, sometimes he does the opposite of the instincts I learned from others. Even after listening for 25 years. I've realized that I have to just enjoy and not even try to connect with the drums the way I can with other bands.
Absolutely, made my dad drive me to best buy july 27 1993 to buy the album listened to it instead of doing my homework, lol good times. Will never forget, wound up owning most of their discography.
90’s was an interesting time in music for sure. Tons of great bands came out during that time. And they all were getting tons of airtime. It was a great time to be young.
The 90's was a sea change in musical taste. A counter culture responding to the 80's excess and commercialism developed and the fashion changed. It created a vacuum for new music that larger labels didn't see coming. Big labels went out and grabbed up every upcoming band and obscure indie, and shoved them in front of the public to find out what would stick. They just didn't know at the time, so you got a wave of weird groups that would have normally never had a chance outside of indie getting a chance.
@@dancode9738 yeah and my CD collection grew and grew. I was lucky to see lots of these bands back then too. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Cracker, Self, Stabbing Westword, and I could go on and on. Awesome time in my life being in my early twenties. I do regret not going to Woodstock 94. Blind Melon is one of my favorite bands from that time to this day.
Great choice! I hope you get a chance to listen to the entire album Siamese Dream. Start to finish, it’s nothing short of rock perfection. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
I was and am a Smashing Pumpkins fan from the beginning. I base myself in metal (what is considered classic metal now Megadeth and Metallica) and very naturally gravitated to Grunge when it started popping off. Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Pearl Jam etc. Early to mid 90s was some great music and great bands.
...those were all excellent acts, a very exciting time in music, coming off the hair do metal years...my intro to metal was Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, UFO, Scorpions...Also grew up with MotleyCrue, Ratt....
Smashing Pumpkins were amazing to see live - saw them outdoors in Australia and it was a huge crush with lots of crowd surfing. It was a great warm up for Soundgarden too 😀
I remember seeing this video for the first time on the show 120 minutes on MTV and immediately thought "this is the music for me". I went out and bought Siamese Dream that week. This era was special for rock music. Everything was so new and different and I was all in. I'm lucky to have lived a short train ride to downtown Chicago where I was able to see all the great bands of this era in smaller venues like The Riviera, The Aragon Ballroom, and The Metro. I was 16-20 years old and having the time of my life. I was able to pay $30 and see the Smashing Pumpkins at the Aragon Ballroom. Rage Against the Machine at Aragon. Primus at the Riviera, Foo Fighters at the Riv. I saw Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Janes Addiction, Beck, Filter, Helmet, Ministry. It was a great time in my life.
This whole album was a Jimmy Chamberlin drumming masterpiece. I reckon he was the most important part of their early sound, and on songs like Cherub Rock and Geek USA he was on top of his game.
This intro wasn't just a build for this song, it was the build for the whole album. And for many people this was their introduction to Smashing Pumpkins (as Siamese Dream was their breakout album).
Perfectly said. It laid the groundwork for the rest of any of their music to come. Layer after layer after layer, building and shaping a story that has yet to end. No songwriter like WPC, no band like SP.
"All those angels with their wings glued on" This line has stuck with me since i heard this 30 years ago. I don't care much for the modern Smashing pumpkins sound, but the albums from the 90s are just undeniable. Timeless.
One of my favorite intros to an album ever. I really like the groove, the fills, the muddy basslines, the stacked guitar tracks, the melody, the production value… It’s practically a perfect song

Jimmy Chamberlain, the drummer, is one of the best. He holds back a lot. Only lets it out once in a while. When he does, you can tell that you just heard something special. Much more restrained than Danny from Tool, but can hit similar heights in moments and also has a very recognizable style.
I’ve always held that Matt Cameron from Soundgarden gets left out of these conversations a lot. He’s just as good as Chamberlain IMO, just more “laid back” in his approach.
Smashing Pumpkins have some absolutely incredible songs, incredible guitar playing, incredible drums, really huge sound and songs that youll never forget like Tonight, Tonight. 1979. Bullets With Butterfly Wings, Zero, Rhinoceros.....
If you want peak SP, check out their first studio album Gish, it is a masterpiece. 'Bury Me' is still my all-time favorite Pumpkins song, that guitar breakdown is a thing a beauty.
According to various interviews with lead singer Billy Corgan, this song's lyric is an ironic attack on the "indie" credibility in Chicago's music scene that had him frustrated - the old complaint about bands going to major labels and becoming sellouts. In Rolling Stone, Corgan said: "I won't play some one else's game anymore. This album was really a strong affirmation to myself: 'F--k you, I don't care. I'm going to do this.' The funny part about it is that it's working. Which says to me I should have trusted myself all along." / Lyrics below: Freak out And give in Doesn't matter what you believe in Stay cool And be somebody's fool this year 'Cause they know Who is righteous, what is bold So I'm told Who wants honey? As long as there's some money Who wants that honey? Hipsters unite Come align for the big fight to rock for you But beware All those angels with their wings glued on 'Cause deep down They are frightened and they're scared If you don't stare Who wants honey? As long as there's some money Who wants that honey? Let me out Let, let me out Let, let me out Let, let me out Tell me all of your secrets Cannot help but believe this is true Tell me all of your secrets I know, I know, I know Should have listened when I was told Who wants that honey? As long as there's some money Who wants that honey? Let me out Let, let me out Let, let me out Let, let me out
I always thought this was about Paradise Lost and the Devil rallying the angels of Hell to rebel against Heaven. Go back and read the lyrics, they make perfect sense. Even the title, Cherub rock because the Devil was the first angel.
@@turtle62785nah, that doesn't make sense at all! It's a big FU to the music industry as they were trying to turn all indi bands into grunge music to cash in on the Nirvana craze.

i was 19 when i first bought the Siamese Dream CD. this opening track blew my ears out on my headphone. still good to listen to on Spotify now while driving.
I totally agree and love the song too. The problem was that Mellon Collie was packed with singles over the course of two disks. Great tune though and he should react to it
They're BASICALLY the first of their kind, by their own admission they borrowed pretty hard from "my bloody valentine" and even early "the cure" (very different from later cure), but they were the first American band to morph those UK influences into a unique sound for sure, and the smashing pumpkins sound remains its own specific thing definitely. They're iconic, 90s wise, no doubt.
I saw them in 1994 on the tour for this record .They played their set twice all the way through. It was a hot Florida night and Billy came out in his fur coat and they fucking blew everyone's minds. They were a tremendous live act. This guy was taking a drink of his beer standing in front of me and heavy music kicked in and I blasted him .I just couldn't help myself. The music just grabbed you by the balls and didn't let go.
Entire album is absolutely amazing but there's no question that this is one of the best intros to an album ever, because it definitively prooves this band's mission statement: solid and direct rock with unique passionate musical expression, with added, psychedelic and peaceful passages, all perfectly mixed...Jimmy Chamberlain is a BEAST, I don't know how many drummers who can be so totally on time and hype but also expressive as well... and this first moment was most people's introduction do him and the band. nothing else needs be said about Billy's ability to write a song and the rest of the band's ability to deliver it... dude is a egomaniac but most truly a musical hero... so glad yr checking these tracks out and digging them, great content! and yes, do check out Mayonnaise, Soma and Hummer next, basically 3 of the best rock songs of all time!!!
I was a band in the early 2000s and we didn't play a lot of covers but we played this song and it's just so much fun to play, to layer all that thick guitar and have those great drum parts, it's just amazing.
10:18 I love how you looked at the camera and I could read your mind "what in the holy f**k is traveling in my ears right now!" I agree bro. Been loving them since 1990. Going to their concert in San Diego tonight too.
Gnats tend to live in the soil of houseplants. If you cover the soil with a light layer of cinnamon over the soil of your indoor plants, it'll help keep the gnats at bay.
Siamese Dream really broke them. Geek USA is a track that gets your attention from the get. But…I am a devotee if their first album “Gish”. I saw them before it came out and when they played songs from Gish, the crowd lost their minds. It wasn’t grunge. It was heavy psychedelic garage hypno rock coz we were putty in their hands. Billy lulled us into submission with “Rhinoceros” before blowing our minds hitting the madness with “SIVA”. Yeah…this stays on my forever playlist.

The 90s (especially in NYC) was MAGIC. Alternative music... including, TOGETHER for FIRST time, alternative hip-hop. Native Tongues... others like Cypress Hill. Ice-t's punk/metal band Body Count, Ice Cube! They all toured together... Same Fans. Same Crowd. Mosh pits for hip-hop AND bands like Soundgarden & Smashing Pumpkins. DotCom ECONOMY BOOM. Again... magic
I had my hands on this record the day it was released. Yes - we were that pumped for it. Siamese Dream is easily the best record by the SP & one of the top 3 records of my lifetime. (other 2 being Jane's Addicion - NS and Radiohead - pick one) Mayonnaise is probably the greatest song i've ever heard in my life. Gorgeous. Guitar work/distortion is redonkulous & just hits right for me and it was the one record where he didn't go over the top screaming like he did on Mellon Collie. It's almost like he uses Chino's vocal style. (Deftones) Nice and smooth over the roaring sonic mixture of distorted guitars. His vocals were just mixed so well on Siamese Dream. (he sounds horrible live btw - but on the record Siamese Dream - omg)
@@FARID1870 Gish was great but never "hit" the same for me personally as SD did. Certainly loved much of MC (could've been streamlined into 1 amazing record imho) and strangely enough - i loved some of the stuff on "Adore" and Machina had some beautiful moments as well... after that i completely lost interest in their stuff post-Machina for some reason? SD was just such an incredibly powerful piece of music for me - and still is.
IMO...this album has some of the greatest guitar tone building, ever. They went to EXTREMES with the guitar layering to get those tones. Listen to the song Hummer from the same album. There is a part in the second bridge where the guitar sounds like a chainsaw cutting through butter. Siamese Dream is one the greatest albums I have ever heard in my life.
Yep! And I’m now 48, was 18 when they dropped this. Along with too many bands at that time to mention, all I’m sayin is, gettin high and this type music was toooo fun 😁🍻
Yes!! One of my recommendations in my comments from your other reactions. This album is their best in my opinion, entire album is 🔥🔥 one of my top albums of all time.
This songs intro still gives me goose bumps. The way every insturment sort of does its own thing for a few seconds and then sync up in an incredible drop. The beginning of the song is like you are going for a ride.
Nowhere Fast, Jellybelly, Hummer ...those three have the sound ur looking for. High intensity focused distortion and phycadelic grooves. Very incredible music man.
They sell this gnat killer that looks like a cute little plastic red apple. You pour the stuff into it and set it where you want it, like the back of the kitchen sink. The gnats all go to it like the ant motel. Terro (I believe makes it). Easy Peasy. They bug me to! 😂
Jimmy Chamberlain (drummer) is probably one of the best drummers of the 90's He had a history in jazz drumming. He always sat behind his drumset, without a drop of sweat, pounding away on snare rolls etc. Always keeps his quarter notes on his hihat foot.
In my younger days I always liked songs for their guitar work… but now I’m hearing the drums… between this song and Gish, I really like the drums. It’s subtle.
Saw them in concert for the first time as a kid in 94 or right around when Siamese Dream came out in a tiny little club before they hit it big. Was so amazing I can’t describe it! Saw them again finally..in 2021 and seeing them again soon on Aug 20 2023. Can’t wait!!!!
Corgan was known to layer many guitar tracks to get that unique warm sound. Smashing Pumpkins and Hum are my 2 favorite guitar tone bands of the 90s. Takes me back!
SMASHING Pumpkins was my favorite for a long time! All of SIAMESE DREAM, GISH and ZERO, outstanding MUSIC never dies!........... ................... NICHOLAOS of TIME!..................
Saw the Pumpkins when I was in highschool back in '93. We'd eaten a bunch of green gel tabs which were fantastic as was the show. It was right after FSU lost to Notre Dame and Billy talked about it on stage even asking the crowd to do the Tomahawk chop which we obliged. I got turned around right when Today started & right at the drop I found the stage. I was right in front of the beautiful D'arcy and she was wearing I think a purple boa or something of the sort. In the black light's she was glowing (I'm sure the gel tabs aided) & I was in love. Siamese Dream is absolutely in my top 5 albums of all time. Right beside 3 Cheers for sweet revenge.

The funny part about it is that it's working. Which says to me I should have trusted myself all along." / Lyrics below:
Freak out
And give in
Doesn't matter what you believe in
Stay cool
And be somebody's fool this year
'Cause they know
Who is righteous, what is bold
So I'm told
Who wants honey?
As long as there's some money
Who wants that honey?
Hipsters unite
Come align for the big fight to rock for you
But beware
All those angels with their wings glued on
'Cause deep down
They are frightened and they're scared
If you don't stare
Who wants honey?
As long as there's some money
Who wants that honey?
Let me out
Let, let me out
Let, let me out
Let, let me out
Tell me all of your secrets
Cannot help but believe this is true
Tell me all of your secrets
I know, I know, I know
Should have listened when I was told
Who wants that honey?
As long as there's some money
Who wants that honey?
Let me out
Let, let me out
Let, let me out
Let, let me out
I always thought this was about Paradise Lost and the Devil rallying the angels of Hell to rebel against Heaven.
@@willpinadoesn’t fit at all?? Are you reading the same thing I am? literally every sentence makes sense and is littered with Judeo-Christian nods. Freak out give in doesn’t matter what you believe in (doesn’t matter if you are for me or against me we are going to war) stay cool and be somebody’s fool (you can not get mad and stay a puppet for God) they know who is righteous what is bold (who is God to say what is best for us?) beware of the angels with their wings glued on bc deep down they’re frightened and their scared if you don’t stare ( im they may LOOK intimidating but they aren’t the real angels and behind closed doors they’re scared) who wants honey (paradise is called the land of milk and honey) as long as there’s some money (always a price to pay)…then it ends with him screaming “let me out”
With how learned Corgan is I seriously doubt this is not a double meaning to this song.
This band has so many hits. Keep doing them.
This song was a statement.
i was 19 when i first bought the Siamese Dream CD. this opening track blew my ears out on my headphone. still good to listen to on Spotify now while driving.
That big sound was something they made popular. It's called the smashing pumpkins wall of sound.
Just saw these guys last at the cosmo in Vegas best show ever the did this for there last song and holy shit they hit it out of the park crazy
One of their most underrated songs that is AMAZING is "Here is No Why" from mellon collie and the infinite sadness album. Worth a listen.
I totally agree and love the song too. The problem was that Mellon Collie was packed with singles over the course of two disks. Great tune though and he should react to it
"Muzzle" is also an underrated one from Mellon Collie.
Great song that is seemingly NEVER mentioned
A wall of sound.....so heavy, so good.
Smashing Pumpkins wrap you in a warm blanket of big melancholy guitar sounds. What two big Muff's can do!
Thank you for reacting to this song - one of my absolute favorites of all time!
I describe Billy's voice as "Demonic Cherub", lol.
One of the best album intros of all time.
Blasted him why?
I didn’t warm up to them initially in the 90s, but they grew on me over time and are absolute legends in my heart
I'm definitely going to share this with my sister! Weve both been fans since their beginning! ❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥🎸🎸🎸
“Snail”…all day, everyday! 🙌
Yes!!❤
“We’ll call ourselves the Smashing Pumpkins and make dope music.” Nailed it!
You're exactly right, people who love them LOVE them ❤ thanks for always being honest
Balsamic Vinegar in a bowl with a banana with a couple drops of dish soap. Cover with Saran wrap and poke holes with a fork.
Soap breaks surface tension and flies land on it and can't get out.
I'm glad you found the Pumpkins, so many good songs.
For me Smashing Pumpkins was my go to band when I got tired of Grunge but not ready for Fog Hat.
Aaahh. What about Alice In Chains?
This entire album is a masterpiece.
Absolutely
(he sounds horrible live btw - but on the record Siamese Dream - omg)
yeah i just couldnt get Mellon Collie and the subsequent albums. Gish was another favourite
Salute to one of the greatest albums of the decade and greatest guitar tones of all time.
Those chills are real! Same here, from the first time hearing, and every time thereafter.
This is their best song!
The guitar solo makes all of my hair stand on end. So good!
I love the pumpkins! Been my favorite band since 1992
Yep! And I’m now 48, was 18 when they dropped this. Along with too many bands at that time to mention, all I’m sayin is, gettin high and this type music was toooo fun 😁🍻
I went to see them play live in 1995 also and it was fabulous!!
Pumpkins went pretty damn flawless for several albums. I saw them in Jacksonville shortly before Gish released and was hooked from then on.
I was lucky in the 90s. They wrote a song called "1979". The year I was born. Another great song.
30 years later and I still get chills listening to this all-time great banger.
Yes!! One of my recommendations in my comments from your other reactions. This album is their best in my opinion, entire album is 🔥🔥 one of my top albums of all time.
One of my favorite groups! Lucky to see them live last summer during the "World is a Vampire" Tour
Probably my favorite Pumpkins song.
That thing that rotates in the background to your left, is perfectly matches with the groove and the rhythm of the song❤
I just bought Siamese dreams on cd and listened to it a few times through now, honestly one of the best albums I’ve listened to. It’s a no skip album
They sell this gnat killer that looks like a cute little plastic red apple. You pour the stuff into it and set it where you want it, like the back of the kitchen sink. The gnats all go to it like the ant motel. Terro (I believe makes it). Easy Peasy. They bug me to! 😂
Jimmy Chamberlain (drummer) is probably one of the best drummers of the 90's
He had a history in jazz drumming. He always sat behind his drumset, without a drop of sweat, pounding away on snare rolls etc.
Always keeps his quarter notes on his hihat foot.
For me, as a fan always and forever.. its their whole catalog is awesome, no bad songs.
I was 16 when this was released. It was my foundation for my taste in music. Siamese Dream is one of the best albums ever.
"1979" is a vibe. "Bullets with butterfly wings" was my anthem
Saw these guys at the Metro in 91 and 92 . Junior and senior year in high school. Raged. Glad I saw r them early enough.
Saw these guys in the early nineties live in London. They were fast and tight. Oh my the best band I have seen to date.
Billy and Jimmy, while both respected, are two of the most under rated duos ever in rock and roll history. EVER.
This is an old hillbilly trick put apple cider vinegar in a cup with some Dawn dish soap, and then put saran wrap over it and put a couple holes in the top of the saran wrap. It will get stuck in it it works 👍
