Getting all that bark off in one piece must have been such a pain in the ass. This is more difficult then it seems, especially in fall, when bark comes off not as easy.
Have you attempted this before? I am curious, is it easier to do on a tree that is freshly cut down, or one that’s been dead for a bit? I’d like to give this a shot
@@kg2435 well, to get it in one peace, you want it "green". It is the easiest durring spring when sap starts to flow. But all the times I have used bark as roofing it has come from dead strees, where the bark is already popped off. It is fragile, so streightening it out is not much an option, but it works. For green trees I have done only smaller trees and it can be tedious, so I can only imagine how tedious and hard it would be for larger tree with basic bushcraft tools. Any imperfection in bark and you will have holes, rips and what not. I would only recomend this method if you are making a week long+ basecamp or something. Otherwise it's just too much work.
@@akabaimchen3532 u arent very observative my friend.. look at the bottom portion of the tree where its ripped.. thats not a cut my guy.. and besides whose gonna use an axe to cut down a tree that big
I used to hand peel pulp wood for paper making. Best peeling tool we made was from car leaf springs. Weld a bar to one end to make a T handle. And grind down the other end to make it thinner to slip between the bark and pulp. The perfect length was depended on tree diameter. Smaller leafs worked better on smaller trees. But the curve follows the trees very well and the length gave you leverage to peel back the big sheets. We would clear a 60ft long tree pretty quickly.
How satisfying it is to watch you peel the bark off the tree. Plus the sounds of crackling from the fire. If it wasn't day time I'd fall asleep to the sound.

You would probably find better use against rain with this shelter if you layered the bark horizontally instead of vertically. It would act like shingles and let the water roll off with no way of entering, the way you have it the water would just come through the middle crack
