Loving the kilt, just got one myself for forging in. Game changer, keeps everything nice and cool! Also great video! As a beginner they are awesome and show people lots of useful info.
you got a like on this video mostly for rocking the kilt. I wear one when i'm in the shop because i live in Florida and it's hot as the devils bum hole here. It's nice to see other guys wearing them.
Very efficient forging sir,you got great skills...working up my confidence to build my first hammer.I really need a 2lb cross pein and a big 4lb or 5lb crosspein. Thanks for the video.
Rock Mike no problem. Look around the channel I’ve got a few videos on hammers. m.facebook.com/oldhickoryforge/ feel free to contact me on my Facebook if you have any questions
Love me a good straight peen! I've used them for a long time. I'm still beating on a RR anvil, haven't found a decent one around here yet. Thinking I'm going to try that heat treat method myself. Good work as usual!
Thats what i wanna try 2 forge this weekend 4 my.1st hammer build. Had the steel 4 over a month now. Made the drift, the punch lastnight, just gotta get my grinder tuned n runnin true first.
See a buddy of mine would always give me crap about using my straight peen over the cross peen but In quite a few different applications the straight peen is super helpful
I am a stonemason, I would like to see you forge & temper a solid steel brick masonry hammer if you have time, I personally carry an Estwing & it has been my choice hammer for the last few years, I like the fact that it's solid steel so if I get angry & slice through a brick I don't have to worry about the head flying & taking someone out😂
Nice hammer John. Have you looked at the Jockey Lot near Morganington? There's a few guys sale wood products there. Off I-40 before you get to Lake James. In fact, I think it's the first Lake James exit heading west. Keep Hammering!
If you’re a talking about the Jamestown flea market that’s where I got them from before. Apparently someone broke into that guys booth and he’s not setting up anymore
Old Hickory Forge , yep that's it! Some of us old times call it the Jokery Lot!! LOL!! I forget not everyone is as old as me!!! That happens when to you when you get old!!! LOL! Take care John! God bless!
Where do you get such large chunks of carbon steel? I also have a hard time finding good steel for making tools. No scrap yards locally will sell to me.
There’s plenty of online retailers. New Jersey steel baron. Admiral steel. Speedy metals. If you have a metal supermarket near you they carry a good bit if carbon steel in all sizes and shapes.
That hammer came out looking really nice. I saw the video where Alec did that, but what I don't understand wont the faces chip on you as they will be brittle. Whats your take on it now you have used the hammer for a while?
1652, what a great year!
You're the kind of guy that scared the Romans enough to build Hadrian's wall.
Not sure is they had belt grinders in 1652...
Awesome video! Super cool to see that not everyone is using power hammers to get the job done

Looks good if that's important to 'ya, though dunno about the flinging hot metal with naked legs part.
