    Just clarifying if you're saying that optical flow has improved with the 2019 update or has it always been good and we've just been wary of using it? I ask because I've tried using the 2019 version and it's just buggy as heck. The 2108 version seems to work better for me, but random things seem not to work well in the updated version. Great video as always. Cheers!

    TL;DR: My suggestion: DON'T use optical flow on humans, just landscapes and objects. I've yet to find an instance where it beat sampling or blending when showing human beings. It also hurts rendering speed.
    Full comment:
    First off, LOVE your tutorials Colin. I would be so incredibly pleased to get my business to the level where I can teach others in the manner you do.
    In regards to optical flow , your tutorial is fantastic but it shows a very rare instance where it works. It would be interesting to see a similar clip with the effect applied, where the water is moving at a high rate of speed.
    One point to add from me on this - I think it would look even better if the adjoining clips were also slowed down, at least to 85%. I've tested optical flow quite a bit and it is more trouble than it's worth in 90%+ of cases. Oh and it reallllly adds to rendering times.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  5 лет назад

      Thanks so much for your kind words and support Jeff! Yes Optical flow is very computationally intensive, that's the same for all solutions out there including Twixtor.

    As I understand, I need to use Optical flow in video with slowmo less than 60fps. If there is no good result, need to use Plextor. What I need to use in video with 23,976fps with Speed up, Frame, Blend, Optical, Twixtor or nothing? 😊

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  4 года назад +1

      There is no right or wrong, just use the interpolation that looks best. If you're happy with the results of one type, then you're done. If not, try another. It's impossible to know beforehand.
      That being said, Trixtor will always look better but will take a lot longer to process.

    Thanks for this great video. This really helps. On another note I have a request. Could you do a video on audio dialog. When I use auto level in the audio panel it raises all of my dialog clips to an approximate even level but I have peaking in the red in some areas. I then have to go in and pull those areas down individually. Am I missing something?

    • @bendudding
      @bendudding 6 лет назад

      Emerick Gerald try increasing the clarity slider in the essential sound panel to even out the peak levels.
      This will increase the over all levels so bring them down with the clip level slider.
      This is behind the scenes applying dynamic range compression.

    Collin I put optical on every clip I turn to slow motion, wether I shot it at 60 or 120. Are you saying that it mostly only should be used when slowing 24 down? Thanks!

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  6 лет назад +2

      If you're speeding up a clip, then there is less chance of artifacts because new frames don't have to be created. You can use Optical Flow on any footage speed, but it really makes sense for slow mo.
      In your case of shooting high speed already, you should Right-click on the clip in the Project Bin and choose Modify> Interpret Footage. In that dialog box set the frame rate to the Sequence frame rate (like 29.97 fps). Now when you place it in the Timeline it will occupy a longer section and the slow motion will be made up of the frames you've already capture so no need for Optical Flow. What you should see is absolutely pristine slow motion playback.

    • @kevinshabach
      @kevinshabach 6 лет назад

      VideoRevealed I actually tried the interpret footage the other day and I thot after I dragged it in timeline it would be in slow mo already( but it wasn’t) so I didn’t continue doing it with rest of them. But if this is your suggestion to get the best slow mo I will revisit doing that now.
      One more question. When slowing down 60 or 120 is there a standard or best speed/duration to modify the clip to to have the smoothest slow mo? I usually just do -40 regardless of if I shot 120 or 60. Or does it not matter much and just modify the slow mo to what seems the most pleasing to my eye?
      Thanks Collin!

    • @KYMedia
      @KYMedia 6 лет назад +1

      @@kevinshabach it depends on your final export frame rate. i.e if you were to export in 24fps and work in 24fps sequence/timeline you should change the speed of your 60fps footage 40% for smooth slow mo playback....if you have a 120 fps footage and exporting 24fps you'll need to change the speed to 20% etc...shooting action at 120fps gives you amazing slow mo at 20% in 24fps timeline. Wish I had a camera that shoots 1080p @120fps. :)

    Colin, Thanks for so many great tutorials. I've learned a lot. I recently noticed that when turning on Optical Flow on clips that have proxies, that the proxies are no longer shown. (I know when a proxy is being shown because my proxies have embedded timecodes in the lower right corner. The clips also skip many frames when dragging, just like full-res clips). When I turn off Optical Flow on those clips, the proxies return to normal. Any ideas about this problem? (Premier Pro CC 2020 v14.9) Thanks, Bill W.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  3 года назад

      There's no reason to turn on Optical Flow until you're ready to export so you don't need it for Proxies. Also, Premiere Pro needs original data to do Optical Flow correctly and Proxies don't have original data so it shuts it off.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  5 лет назад

      They are just trying to make the best choice as Optical Flow isn't known for being a solid effect and can create poor output.
      I would give them what they want but I would also export just the single slow motion clip as uncompressed (with the original footage) and give them that as a possible choice for final. If they're happy with the quality, then they can swap it out.

      @@VideoRevealed May I ask you one question?
      If I have a project in Premiere Pro with a timeline of 60 FPS and there are 85-90 percent 30 FPS videos in it, also some that have a changed speed (either slow motion or fast speed). I used for all normal speed videos the default setting of time interpolation "Frame Sampling" and for the other with speed change the interpolation "Optical Flow". Now I don't know how to export it because you can choose only ONE time interpolation for the export. If I choose Time Sampling there may be some problem with the slow motion videos and if I choose Optical Flow there may be some problem with the normal speed videos (as you showed it in the other video five years ago). Furthermore if I use 30 FPS and Optical Flow there will be no impact to the videos because - as you mentioned in your video - when there is no mismatch in frame rates there will be no change to the time interpolation. The best way would be to export a 60 FPS movie with Frame Sampling for normal speed videos and Optical Flow for the others. But is that possible or even the best option? Please help me.

    I am currently running premiere and ae 2020 which of course
    have the optical flow feature
    Just wondering if they did not have this option
    Would there be any purpose extracting the frames to a folder
    making a duplication of every frame over and over
    Example the video is 23.98 fps you want it 30
    make 29 more copies of each frame
    Set a jpg sequence in premiere using all frames
    and yes the video will be way longer it's original
    duration but then speeding it back up
    Would that help Collin or would the movie look ugly?

    • @VideoRevealed

      Duplicating frames isn't the same as Optical Flow. Optical flow is building new frames so the motion is smooth. Duplicating the same frame multiple times will look like a still image, not video.
