Great joke btw. As a Brazillian army lieutenant I find it funny. Some branches even of our own don't see the big picture. Like we usually say... The infantry believes they can win a War on their own when in fact everyone matters. The navy, The marines, The air force, The army, infantry, artillery, cavalry etc... we are all stronger togheter and everyone has their own importance.

@TCB you got this man. Plenty of us shipped and made it through successfully, even when we thought that there was no way that we would be able to make it. I tell civilians and young marines alike, boot camp is the easiest and most fun part of your career. All you have to worry about is yourself and doing exactly what your told. The hard part is when you hit the fleet and you become responsible for stuff. You’ll rock it man. Good luck 👊🏻

    • @pkmachinegun
      @pkmachinegun 3 года назад +3

@@Freespeech-p7x nope. Boot Camp. I was enlisted. I’m not saying that it’s not physically demanding - it certainly is. But the physical demands take back seat to the psychological breakdown of the psyche in the face of constant failure and the demand for more. But all you can do is give 100% of yourself. The mental portion is tougher than the physical portion, but that being the case if you simplify it down to the base function, all you have to do is scream loud, run as fast as you can “that way” and drink water. It’s very simple.
When you get to the fleet, the weight of command, responsibility, being a good NCO and the like are much harder. Inspiring others to greatness while being responsible for their wellbeing, gear and mission success is much harder mentally. All while having mental, moral and physical traits that are above reproach…it’s much easier to scream and run that way as fast as you can.

Oooh Rah! Great topic! I was a 0341 Forward Observer. 1 of 6 Marines in my family. Raised as a competitive athlete I wanted the physical & mental challenge along with serving our Country. Boot Camp and SOI were my favorite part. My goal was to become an Officer and retire at 20yrs. I was college while in, signed up for OCS, but got into a bad car wreck prior to leaving. The damage to my back lead to my medical discharge when activated for Fallujah in 2003. Like you I was offered an admin job but the field was my calling. Some of me regrets that decision but God had another blessing saved up for me. I've been living that blessing as a husband, father, and Coach over the past 18yrs.

He told me the likelihood of me graduating was very small. He said that I would need to double the effort of other younger students over 4 years. On 6th October 2017 I Graduated with Second Class Honors; a Master of Health Sciences. I achieved this degree in 1 Year. It helped me to going from a little overweight to rather muscular today and I learnt to go the extra mile, even if I felt I'd rather like to quit and that really boosted my self-image and my confidence. Also two bad work experiences after finishing university (one as customer service representative which I did for one year and a program to become a teacher which I completely failed due to stress) pointed me to what I'm really good at...translation and my curiosity for other people and cultures. I did a master's degree in translation Dutch (my mother tongue)-French-German and thanks to the different experiences I had and changes I made, I now have a really nice job as a translator with nice colleagues and a very supporting environment :)

As a Marine myself, one of my adopted core values is actually our first leadership principle. “Know yourself and seek self improvement.” Even after only 4 years enlisted in Tracks and getting out into the civ life, I’ve found that as a husband, father, coworker at a Fortune 500 company the best thing that I can do is fine tune the one thing that I have control of. Myself. Introspection helps me be a better servant to all those around me, helps inspire my kids to greatness and really drives success to a team by acting as the grounding rod for everyone else.

Great rundown on "commitment." The textbook meaning is weak-like "attachment" (high commitment = you stay with your company; low commitment = you leave). I still recall from Army basic a drill sergeant who referred to everything on post as "my this" and "my that" (Army trucks, firing ranges, Claymore mines). This attitude meant that, left up to him, no one would ever have to worry about taking care of the organization's property. I now tell my students the same story: Want to get ahead in your company? Show them they can trust you with their stuff. It was a great lesson.

Your story actually reminds me of how I came to join the Marines. I, too, was picked on constantly in school. I had expressed I wanted to join the Marines, and a dude that was with me in high school shot put training said, "I've never seen a Marine that looked like a bitch." A few years later, I had applied for NROTC and was denied, but still went to university. Despite being a smart kid in high school, I also struggled to apply myself and flunked out of an engineering program in my first year. After a little bit self reflection, I eventually enlisted in the Marines at 22 (Platoon 1010 was actually my boot camp platoon lol), and am now progressing through a Mechanical Engineering curriculum better than I could have hoped.
If my story is any indicator, I would say my most important core value is Commitment. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again

I was bullied as well but most of the times I remember were more psychological/being made fun of related than physical probably because I was never super fat probably due to genetics, so I couldn’t physically be pushed around since fat people are stronger than skinny people. I didn’t try to make a lot of friends because of perceived feelings of inferiority and my stutter, which was a combination of constant nervousness and anxiety and genetics. I also smelled pretty bad for various reasons which, surprisingly, nobody made fun of me for. But luckily I did stay with certain groups of students, some of whom I was closer with than others

Doing whats right even when no one is watching and saying what you think is right even when everyone else is not agreeing with you that's courage. Very similar story for me. I really loved my time in the Marines; I miss it in some ways. I am in the army now and it is very different, in some ways good in some ways bad. Military 4 lyfe though (or at least 20 yrs).

    Accountability
I feel we as a people have developed an ability to see others at fault for our current situation. I believe that as a person you need to acknowledge that you're responsible for you, no one else.

Military service is mandatory in my country. A lot of people who served in the military say the same thing when they get back. "it made me a better person" some complain, of course, but the majority I've spoken to were grateful to have been served. I shall also serve for a year this year as an artillery officer and looking forward to do it. A salute from an allied nations to you sir.

Devil Dog. There were a few things that come to mind of why I joined the Marines and being bullied wasn't one of them lol. I wasn't fond of the idea of furthering my education after high school. I wasn't too bright and wanted to do something with my life. I also lived in poverty and didn't have the funds to go to college. Living like the way I was, wasn't what I wanted in my future. As a first generation Cuban American, this was the reason why I became a United States Marine. I never regret this decision and was the best thing that changed my life. Semper FI.

Yknow one big thing about the military that built me up as a person right from the go was to be punished for my mistakes in that open, sometimes silly and over the top way that you'd expect a recruit to be subject to.
Why? It's because there is a strange and oppressive passiveness that society treats mistakes with that leave you in the dark to the degree you're being judged, so even the smallest mistakes seem grave and scary. The military isn't like that - it (at least starts) pretty straight forward and honest. Sure it sucks to be the idiot but that moment passes. After the military, I'm just not afraid of those little mistakes anymore, so it has given me so much courage to just do small things that average people don't do anymore like stand up for myself if I feel mistreated.

I, too, joined the USMC. I did so for several reasons, but one was to become tougher. I found the USMC to be a repeat of the same high school bullshit. I didn't get fucked with any less, I was just used to it from years of the same bullshit while still in school so it didn't bother me anymore. As far as confidence, we skipped all the confidence building exercises in boot, so if anything it made me less confident. If I were to do it again I would likely go Airforce, get my bachelor's degree while I was in, then use the GI Bill for gradschool.

Honor, Courage and Commitment are amazing core values. And the 14 leadership traits of JJ DID TIE BUCKLE are qualities every Marine should strive to exemplify. But one of my own personal core values is discipline. Ask any Marine and they will tell you how valuable discipline is, mentally, physically and morally. Having discipline is what helps me stay true to the other core values the Marine Corps gave me. It’s a conscious choice every day to complete the tasks set before you, without excuses. Semper Fidelis Mr. Centeno.

Funny Story about why I joined the Marines. I had fully intended on joining the Army, I wanted to be an Army Ranger. For some reason, I had it in my head that Ranger was the way to go. Well, the girl I was with at the time started messing around on me with this guy that was a weekend warrior in the national guard or reserves or something. Around the same time a guy that graduated a year ahead of me was home on recruiters assistance and ran into me at Mcdonald's. After talking to him, I was like you know what, she thinks this weakling in the army reserves is something? I'll show you both of them. I left for MCRD San Diego 7 days after graduation. Haven't seen either one of them since.
