This by far THE BEST STABLIZER I have ever seen! no wonder it took so much time to build. hats off Mr.

Man a drill press is one of the best tools you could ever invest your money into. Awesome and well-respected engineering here dude - probably one of the best i've really seen so far. 5 stars.

Thanks. i put a "panning" ring at the top of the handle. it actually a loose fitting washing that only works with you apply pressure to it. makes it real subtle.

You can get a ratchet universal joint from any autoparts store for under 10 bucks. They work really well too if you get a loose fitted one. Some come pressed too tightly, so you'll have to get a good feel for it at the store before buying it.

i built it. used a coleman flashlight, a ball bearing, a Traxxas u-joint and some custom bushing and spacers. (turned them on a lathe)

Good one, might be the best I've seen on here. Good video too. You show nice clear close-ups and video of the stabilizer in use. You didn't waste your time. Thanks.

@arteesimo. Sorry for the delay I just saw your post. I don't want discourage you but that was one of the hardest pieces to make. I started with 2" dia aluminum and turned it down on one end so it would slide into the tube. From there I had to saw and mill to get the plate to mount right. I've actually changed alot on my steadicam since this vid. I'll update it someday. Good luck

It's very nice, and you obviously put a lot of careful work into it. I just wish you'd spent more of the video describing how you actually made it instead of simply shooting video of the finished product. Sharing your tips would have been very appreciated.

@cowspank you have to use a tool to use it, you might break it if you use a phillips (i flexed mine when i used a phillips). their is a ton of friction due to the maufacturing, just stick a metal drill and lightly (does not need much removal of material) move it

Hey man. I've noticed there's a slight swing motion when you accelerate. You have put nice adjustments for balancing it on horizontal axis but you didn't balance it properly on the vertical one. Add an adjustment of length above the join. That will let you better balance it in the vertical axis and avoid the swing. Let me know if you find that useful.

It just seems slightly ironic. So much detail given to constructing that nice smooth steadicam. Then we see the rostrum camera work in this clip and we kinda know Ken Morse wasn't there.

Great steadycam you made there! I want one for my Eos 550D....better get reading up how to make one myself (Merlin Steadycam is a tad too expensive for me, I saw it in a shop in NYC but it was over 800$, but pretty nice).

to everyone who watch this thinking they would learn how to make a steadicam. sorry you're disappointed, but i never claimed or intended for this to be a "how to/informative" vid. I simply wanted a steadicam so i built one and made a vid with it. I also never expected this vid to get over 70k hits. but look on the bright side, i didnt have plans or details and was still able to do this, so you can too. i do try to answer ?'s and thnx for the tips from a few of you. i appreciate it.

the only "factory" pieces i purchased was a coleman light, a traxxas RC u-joint, and a ball bearing. everything else i made from common stock aluminum. no actual specs either. just made each piece to fit.. sorry i cant be more help..good luck

i shoot with the canon 5DMii. for the video of the steadicam itself i used my 24-70mm 2.8 lens. the test video actually using the steadicam i used my 17-40 f4 lens. its lighter and works better with my counter weight..

It looks very refined, like you had access to some nice machining equipment. Is the washer attached to a friction bearing to make panning smoother? Anyway, excellent job.

such a good design, such bad balance.
your sample test videos have a lot of the pendulum effect, you need to add more weight, and have a way to add and adjust weight methods. for incredibly detailed details on how to balance a steadicam, just go to the steadicam site and go to the technical details.

@dahemric nice work. I'm on the home stretch of completing my own DIY project but I'm really stumped on one part and hope you can lend a hand. I'm trying to figure out a safe and dependable way of attaching the arm/curve to the baseplate. What is the name of the piece you have there? I have been going crazy trying to use angle aluminum and the likes. Please assist. Thank you.

It made it easier for Matt to make pictures which have that jaw-dropping-effect whenever you look at them. It may work for you too.
