Danny Brown must be the happiest dude in the world right now. He went from sending Anthony his mixtapes to get noticed to being his favorite album of the year.
Kaise Jøte I don't think it will be. He already released his b sides this year. I think it's going to be another full length album telling an even better story
1. Lemonade 2. When You Sleep... by The 1975 3. Blackstar by David Bowie 4. Blonde by Frank Ocean 5. Sincerely by Stephen 6. All My Demons by AURORA 7. Nothing's Real by Shura 8. White Album by Weezer 9. A Seat At The Table by Solange 10. Remember Us To Life by Regina Spektor
I was expecting Malibu to appear on your list. Great video, either way, Anthony. Thanks for list week this year. I pretty much just discovered your videos this year, and it's been really fun. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Here the top 10 albums of 2016 IMO 1. Blonde - Frank Ocean 2. WGIFH... TY4YS - ATCQ 3. Atrocity Exhibition - Danny Brown 4. untitled unmastered - Kendrick Lamar 5. surprisinglyroomy Nice list. My top 15 from what I've heard 1. Bowie - Blackstar 2. Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition 3. ATCQ - TY4YS 4. Car seat Headrest - Teens of Denial 5. Angel Olsen - MY WOMAN 6. Frank Ocean - Blonde (though I have to admit, I just started getting into it about 2 weeks ago) 7. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool 8. Kendrick - Untitled.Unmastered 9. Jenny Hval - Blood bitch 10. Beyonce - Lemonade 11. Anderson Paak - Malibu 12. Parquet Courts - Human Performance 13. Preoccupations - Self Titled 14. Nick Cave - Skeleton Tree 15. Whitney - Light Upon the Lake not a big death grips fan, haven't got around to listen to Bon Iver, James Blake, Anohni, Leonard Cohen or Solange to which I know these albums were pretty acclaimed
Sam Alexander i could replace JEFFERY or Malibu with Brazy. Haven't got around to any you mentioned or listed besides Skeleton Tree, which i've i just started listening to and is GREAT so far.
surprisinglyroomy Yeah Preoccupations sound is like New Order's Movement (their first after Joy Division) and Parquet Courts is like early 2000s garage rock record. Whitney is in the lane of Mac DeMarco and then everything else we've had the same. Yeah I've started to go back to Nick Cave, it's a very dark album like Blackstar and like Leonard Cohen's (so I've heard)
So cool to see Danny in that #1 spot. I was introduced to his music from Anthony with XXX and I remember him saying Danny sent him a message before about the hybrid. Really awesome seeing things come full circle like that.
Kind of weird that all these albums are recent ones. would have thought you would have known some classics too, like KISS or King Diamond. Kids these days!
Anthony Fantano has one of the most diverse and eclectic not only taste but extremely knowledge in music that I know of. Very complex, but also very simple expectations I feel I get from Fantano.
Fully refuses to review Cudi Always refusing to review Cudi Never reviewing Cudi Totally against reviewing Cudi Anyways, im not reviewing Cudi Nope, I will not review Cudi Oh wow, look, i didnt review Cudi!
Guillotine Gaming he probably killed himself because he cant take the fact that he loves the album and how rose golden and commander is constantly playing in his head over and over again.
My personal top ten list: 10. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool 9. Glass Animals - How To Be A Human Being 8. The I.L.Y's - Scum With Boundaries 7. David Bowie - Blackstar 6. Injury Reserve - Floss 5. Childish Gambino - "Awaken, My Love!" 4. Death Grips - Bottomless Pit 3. Anderson .Paak - Malibu 2. Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition 1. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard - Nonagon Infinity
Can someone explain the appeal of Death Grips to me? With all their acclaim I must be missing something. Their stuff just sounds like a headache to me.
TartTooth at first I really wasn't into them, just sounded like abrasive noise to me, but after I heard their more hip-hop sounding songs, specifically Guillotine and Takyon, I just sort of developed a taste for them. You kind of just have to be in the mood and looking for pure energy and emotion and noise to even sort of enjoy it, which probably sounds a *bit* pretentious but their stuff is really different from most artists. if you more into the hip-hop sounding songs check out Guillotine, Bubbles Buried in this Jungle, Takyon, and Trash. The first album I listened to was their newest one and it's probably the most accessible, I'd just skip Hot Head and Giving Bad People Good Ideas at first since those are probably the most abrasive. But yeah, they're an acquired taste for sure and extremely raw. So TL;DR: Death Grips are super raw and abrasive, have tons of pure musical chaos and energy, start with Bottomless Pit (album) then go to Ex-Military (album).
Tevin TheFirst exactly, IMO i loved the album but that dosnt matter didnt intend it to be high in the list just thought it maybee should have been somewhere on the list
Really glad to see Blackstar reach so highly on your list, it was my favorite record of the year. Loads of stuff to look into on this list, good shit! Must've been a nightmare to get it together.
my personal top 20: 1. Run the Jewels 3- Run the Jewels 2. A Moon Shaped Pool- Radiohead 3. Atrocity Exhibition - Danny Brown 4. Malibu - Anderson .Paak 5. Views - Drake 6. A Moon Shaped Pool was the my favourite album of the year, It's proudly displayed in my living room, and I would have gladly would have bought the deluxe edition if I could have afforded to.
Little Caesers Higo Nah. A few terrible lines here and there, but it had some very nice tracks. (Wolves, Ultralight Beam, Saint Pablo, Real Friends, FML, No More Parties in LA, and Waves in particular)
Charlie F Bro watch needle's review he explains exactly what I thought when I listened to it. It's a HUGE album and only has like 2 decent songs. It's a HUGE L.
Skyy Aquino-freedle hip hop is mainly boring musically for me. Like how can you emotionally be affected by anything from Death Grips? They just make random beeps and bops to make up for the lack of substance in their music. If you want to listen to something for its lyrics, listen to or read slam poetry jeez.
AquaCoyote that generalization about is very ignorant. producing is an art in of itself, sure there's no instruments played by the artists but that's what sampling is for. I encourage you to look up Vox's videos on hip hop lyricism. after that id encourage you to look up J. Cole Wet Dreamz beat breakdown (just one example of an amazingly produced hip hop song off the top of my head)
Mike Craig you can't just assign the masterpiece that is the Shrek soundtrack to a year. The Shrek soundtrack is fucking timeless and deserves to win every category every single year!!

Tell me about it. Watch for thr 5-6/10 review .-.
Cartie King he gave it a 4/10 lmao
I'm gonna call it right now... Kendrick is getting number one next year
HPF Mav probably, and its probably also a b side lmao
Kaise Jøte I don't think it will be. He already released his b sides this year. I think it's going to be another full length album telling an even better story
HPF Mav it was a joke dummy
Marc Dargis It wasn't funny
Nah, its just going to be kendrik making scat noises in a dumpster behind your local home depot
Boi, wer dat Childish Gambino at?
He mentioned it on his Honorable Mentions, most of the albums on this list are 8/10s anyway and he gave Gambino a 7.
it was in the honorable mentions
Charlie Lane-Field Big Baby D.R.A.M. had gotten a 7 aswell. The ratings don't truly reflect how much he "personally" enjoys the album.
Mike Hawk in the trash
Mike Hawk Honorable Mentions
I watched this video to make sure A Moon Shaped Pool was there.
HOW DID DRAM MAKE it in the list and NOT TLOP
statistically false
Big baby dram was a better album than tlop.
ever heard of personal prefrence
green boat sorry facts dont care about your feelings
Probably because TLOP is the second worst album of the decade so far, right behind Rips by Ex Hex.

not a big death grips fan, haven't got around to listen to Bon Iver, James Blake, Anohni, Leonard Cohen or Solange to which I know these albums were pretty acclaimed
Check that, Still Brazy at #9. So everything moves down one. I still like that Whitney album
Sam Alexander i could replace JEFFERY or Malibu with Brazy. Haven't got around to any you mentioned or listed besides Skeleton Tree, which i've i just started listening to and is GREAT so far.
also tryna to catch up on that Xiu Xiu which i could be seeing breaking my top 5
surprisinglyroomy Yeah Preoccupations sound is like New Order's Movement (their first after Joy Division) and Parquet Courts is like early 2000s garage rock record. Whitney is in the lane of Mac DeMarco and then everything else we've had the same. Yeah I've started to go back to Nick Cave, it's a very dark album like Blackstar and like Leonard Cohen's (so I've heard)
Happy to see The Impossible Kid on here, one of my personal favorites this year.
Danny Brown is a genius who is pushing the boundaries of hip-hop. Can't wait to see him continue to kill it in the future.
Teens of denial is fantastic
MrXtravagantx Isn't it? Tour all sold out over here too, bah!
blodwynswayze i love it
Yo, we're a band called Stookvogel. If you like that album, maybe you'll like our music too.
MrXtravagantx this album changed my lifr
Oh god yes
Nonagon Infinity should be listened to by everyone. It's an instant classic.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOO HE DID IT! The top 3 was so fucking intense, BUT HE DID IT! HE WON! HELL YEAH!
AAAAAAAAAA
So cool to see Danny in that #1 spot. I was introduced to his music from Anthony with XXX and I remember him saying Danny sent him a message before about the hybrid. Really awesome seeing things come full circle like that.
Kind of weird that all these albums are recent ones. would have thought you would have known some classics too, like KISS or King Diamond. Kids these days!
lmao is this a joke
@@Naiche2003 owow
@@abdullahbukhari7611 I dont remember when or why I made this post and I dont understand why I couldn't tell it was a fucking joke
It's a shame there were no new FlyLo, Thundercat or Captain Murphy albums this year :(
Glad to see Swans so high on your list, I love it as well.
THANK YOU for putting Atrocity Exhibition at #1, my favorite album of 2016 by far
Anthony Fantano has one of the most diverse and eclectic not only taste but extremely knowledge in music that I know of. Very complex, but also very simple expectations I feel I get from Fantano.
Fully refuses to review Cudi
Always refusing to review Cudi
Never reviewing Cudi
Totally against reviewing Cudi
Anyways, im not reviewing Cudi
Nope, I will not review Cudi
Oh wow, look, i didnt review Cudi!
Guillotine Gaming he probably killed himself because he cant take the fact that he loves the album and how rose golden and commander is constantly playing in his head over and over again.
Oh look, the review came out today and you're impatient!
But with kanye, I give a 10 to Cudi
I really like Fantano's reviews but it always amazes me how much his musical taste diverges from my own. This list is pure "wtf?" for me.
I still do not understand why you think Channel Orange was not Frank at his "full potential"
My personal top ten list:
10. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
9. Glass Animals - How To Be A Human Being
8. The I.L.Y's - Scum With Boundaries
7. David Bowie - Blackstar
6. Injury Reserve - Floss
5. Childish Gambino - "Awaken, My Love!"
4. Death Grips - Bottomless Pit
3. Anderson .Paak - Malibu
2. Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition
1. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard - Nonagon Infinity
Love to hear you Black Star Theory sir, this album still haunts me and no one else I know has the balls to listen to it
Mac Tireliath So true about the balls. I've had it for a year, barely played it!
TartTooth the more exposed you are to the music the more you start to love it.
TartTooth Listen to one of their albums five times thru and be optimistic and come back here and tell us what you think.
you could probably boil it down to a more experimental form of hardcore punk music.
Experimental industrial hardcore punk hop. Nothing has come close to sounding like them.
Looking back, best year of music of all time
Agreed
You're a legend for throwing Aesop Rock on the list! Respect
You can't wash that shirt yet; RTJ3 just came out!
Probably this list missed konnichiwa by skepta
Sebastien Pomi Im from London so I love skepta but that album failed my hype, but still its better than some of the albums on this list.
Tevin TheFirst exactly, IMO i loved the album but that dosnt matter didnt intend it to be high in the list just thought it maybee should have been somewhere on the list
Tevin TheFirst nah it was my favourite skepta or grime project
Sebastien Pomi terrible record haha
he put it on his honorable mentions video
Really glad to see Blackstar reach so highly on your list, it was my favorite record of the year. Loads of stuff to look into on this list, good shit! Must've been a nightmare to get it together.

Jarroad Allongay at least his number 1 spot is right...
Where's the Arrival soundtrack
Arrival better win the Academy Award for Best Original Score.
Soviet Puma bwwoooooaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
it's not eligible to be nominated. sorry b
Why the HECK not
it's most pivotal moment used a song composed by Max Richter instead of Johann, the academy has strict rules on that.

Holy, Nails in the top ten. Never thought I'd see the day.
Radiohead came out with a album this year? Damn, where was I?
In a bad place.
GamerGuy03, No doubt
A Moon Shaped Pool was the my favourite album of the year, It's proudly displayed in my living room, and I would have gladly would have bought the deluxe edition if I could have afforded to.
a good way to start 2017 in that case my dude :)
hey thanks for making all these lists they are really nice
super delighted to see Impossible Kid make it in the "talk about" section
Wait, death grips isn't number one?
but it's fantanos favorite band
White Supremacist Hate Symbol but death is like eh
we know trash
Where the fuck is Childish Gambino . Anthony you're making 2016 a bit worse
Sebastien Benjamin agree...
Geroge Neeson honorable mention
Sebastien Benjamin Another person's opinion should not affect how your year was.
this was uploaded before Childish gambino last album
No it wasn't.
my number one was the Nick Cave album.
My #1 is gonna be a battle between Lemonade, The Life of Pablo, and Skeleton Tree.
I'm late but life of pablo is indeed fucking awful.
2016 was a great year for music
2016 was a great year for progressive metal, some of the leading bands on the scene released their best albums yet. Interested to hear your thoughts.
Hey Anthony thanks for the great music and albums! I have found so much good music.
I high key don't care about anything but hip hop tbh
Cool
Skyy Aquino-freedle then you need widen your taste fam
Skyy Aquino-freedle hip hop is mainly boring musically for me. Like how can you emotionally be affected by anything from Death Grips? They just make random beeps and bops to make up for the lack of substance in their music. If you want to listen to something for its lyrics, listen to or read slam poetry jeez.
death grips is very experimental and isn't your typical hip hop experience
AquaCoyote that generalization about is very ignorant. producing is an art in of itself, sure there's no instruments played by the artists but that's what sampling is for. I encourage you to look up Vox's videos on hip hop lyricism. after that id encourage you to look up J. Cole Wet Dreamz beat breakdown (just one example of an amazingly produced hip hop song off the top of my head)
Death Grips not #1? This channel is becoming a joke, unsubbed
he has nmh as his profile photo, it's just a meme
when you didn't realize it was a joke
Is death grips even real music ? Sounds more like garbage
James Leon It is garbage, that's why their latest album has a track called Trash
James Lean If you don't like death grips, don't listen to it, your comment is unoriginal and poorly thought out.
As soon as "DRAM: BIG BABY DRAM" was said in the tune of Allstar, I was dying in laughter
The Shrek soundtrack should have been number one!
This list is shit!
KinkiSnowman it'd be there if he made a list when it came out in 01
Mike Craig you can't just assign the masterpiece that is the Shrek soundtrack to a year. The Shrek soundtrack is fucking timeless and deserves to win every category every single year!!
KinkiSnowman agreed
Matt Schoenfeld It may be cringing but it sure as hell isn't cringimg!
Matt Schoenfeld "got my finger and my thumb in the shape of an L on my forehead"
