How to build a Mini Marshall Class AB 8 watt tube guitar amp High distortion Screaming sound kit

  • Опубликовано: 15 сен 2024
  • A fellow music nut challenged me to build a mini Marshall amp utilizing 6AQ5 output tubes. Well, of course, challenge accepted. I am a big fan of the small tube technology. So, I came up and executed the plan. Make a no tone, no signal loss amp, maintain the vintage appeal, Make is scream! And as a big bonus, show you how to do it, make your own. Hey guys, I'm not going to be here forever, share the knowledge, my efforts are here for you. My goal for 2022, is 100K subs. I have been at this for quite some time. Please help me with this. I know thru networking it can be achieved.
Note: 6AV6 heater pins are 3&4, schematic bo bo

Another nice little build. I guess my only comment would be that if you are building an amp with an unobtainium power transformer you might take the time to find a suggested replacement. Many of us could find one without too much trouble, but I'm sure you have viewers who don't have much experience and might be a little peeved by the "sorry, but you'll have to find your own power transformer".

So much better than the tired old Fender clones. Gain is your friend Terry. Modern players need some grit. The more grit the better. Fender Champs and Princetons have their place but pristine sounds only get you so far.
    This is far superior

Self-clinching studs work well for producing ground points on aluminium. To install them you drill a hole just large enough to pass the thread on the stud and tighten them down with a nut until the head is flush with the aluminium. Fastenal sells them for around $1.50 each but you might be able to find them cheaper in industrial surplus houses.

What a great little build!!! Huge sound for, what did you say..?...8 watts!!! There are so many stories of great guitar recordings that have been done on low wattage amps and this build really could easily fit into that history. Thank you D-lab E.! Really looking forward to replicating one of your builds, maybe this year. BTW, thank you for correcting your audio recordings when you have a friend playing guitar to test out your amps. Getting that microphone closer to the speaker really brings out the true sound of the amp. :)

A lot of that distortion comes from the tiny Output transformer as well as lack of negative feedback and no tone stack. It's just a wide-open basic tube amp, she has to scream. Wouldn't call it a mini marshall ,but I digress.

Cool amp. 👍A thought. If you used another 12AX7 for the inverter, you could use the extra triode to make it thus:
Preamp (V1a) => Cathode Follower (V1b & V2a) => Cathodyne Phase inverter (V2b). Then you'd get the characteristic growl of the distorting cathode follower too. 😎🤘

  • @kimbal1958

A single 12AX7 gives 8 watts RMS with a 20k ohm p-p load. See STC data sheet for the application notes.
Three 12AX7 tubes would make an 8 watt Williamson amp with a solid-state diode rectifier, with a lot less distortion.
Remember to switch off the B+ BEFORE the heaters warm up - otherwise cathode stripping will result. The attached video should have at least a switch in the centre-tap of the Power Tranny as a standby to prevent cathode stripping - OR - a delay relay in the B+ line of about 12 secs; otherwise a nice build with a good sound.

Those are fun, but aren't very useful nowadays. Too loud to use at home, sometimes even to use at venues. Friend of mine has a 25w and has never used it's volume past 3!
Even a 15w tube amp is enough for most events, specially with very efficient speakers.
Plus, if you need more power, it's easier to just mic it instead of breaking your back hauling the 100w 200lb jobber.

Good. Why is the common cathode resistor of the 6AQ5s not bypassed with a large (10-50 uF) capacitor? A cap will set the AC bias of the output tubes and increase their gain. Try it, you'll like it. Don't be so dogmatic to Marshall. Same with the second pre-amplifier tube on its cathode resistor.

    • @richardlamoreaux8979
      @richardlamoreaux8979 2 года назад +1

All the Marshall circuits I looked at have the cathode cap AND negative feedback around the splitter drive stage (6AV6 here). This circuit has no negative feedback, so you don't need as much gain in the circuit. The combination may contribute to the distortion that is interpreted as the "Marshall Sound." I'm sure you could play around with these parameters, lotsa fun!

marshall superlite 18 tmb, even if in my opinion it's better to feed the tonestack from the cathode so a lightning matchless would be better , 15/18 watt at home is a lot, that's what you get from a couple of el84s or 6v6s, have a look at micro bassman from Rob Robinette , it uses a 12au7 or 12bh7 in the power section for 1 - 3 watts of power in push pull

best bet would be a torroid, otherwise the Hammond 269ex, which puts out 380v. The max voltage on plates and screen grid for the 6aq5 is 275v, so Terry is driving this amp over the max rating. Going balls to the wall. One could always go with a 120:240v isolation tranny and use a voltage doubler, and a separate filament trans. Starts to become a bigger project.
