- A high-powered tech collaboration, the Matter Protocol already has Apple, Amazon and Google working together to make the connected home more seamless. If it lives up to its promise, this could lead to the next big step forward for smart homes. Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant could become best buds.
We talk through the current partners, tangible steps we’re seeing so far and best- and worst-case scenarios.

The next thing that we need is a universal standard for *EV Charger*
It is a big mess right now
Other EV companies need to start adopting Teslas Supercharger standard. It’s already the most common; and with additional funding from other companies, I imagine it could become as widespread as gas stations.
@@nitsuagmartin imagine tesla giving EV vehicles access to their chargers, and when their competitors start out pacing tesla, tesla just says, whoops, sorry, our stations are no longer available for your vehicles
@@nitsuagmartin fb has mlp
Facts lol
@@casonlamothe312 Tesla has such a huge dominance right now, I highly doubt competitors will EVER outpace them.
It only Matters For Apple Users, most devices support Google/Amazon.
Should I be hyped by this? Deeply concerned? Or desperately scared? I'm not sure. For me, it sounds more like Ultron than Advengers.
This sounds amazing. However, I’ll believe it when I see it.
Same here. The companies would be better off if they did this.
Yeah. USB promised big things… then it devolved into utter chaos for two decades. As good-intended as partnered tech standards usually are, reality is always way more complicated. The “big three” all being behind it, though, could force a lot of smart device makers’ hands here. So we’ll definitely have to see how much the “standard” catches on in the near future. If every major smartphone and tablet on the market is using the same standard, other companies don’t have much of a choice but to fall in line.
@@wohdinhel it should end up like how USB C is forced by countries now on Apple too.
Well I can say our house is Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon compatible using Siri and Google Nest Mini, and Amazon Echo I’m just hoping that those smart CCTV cameras will also come with matter so it will work with our apple product
Imagine the amount of data they could collect
@You Tube they are listening 24/7 thats the issue.
@You Tube never said it was a human🤦🏾♂️ its amazon echo/alexa; and google, apple counterparts.
@You Tube This is the dumbest argument against privacy lmao. Would you be fine living in a glass home? You shouldn’t have anything to hide.
Privacy is important, but chances are right now you have a phone. A phone has a microphone that could be on 24/7. Your phone IS a smart speaker. If you're fine with having a smartphone then a smart speaker won't change anything
Samsung, Amazon, and Google are the real trio
IKEA and Kroger sell lamps and all sorts of electrical devices.
This changes everything for smart homes! Glad I'm getting on board at the right time.
Apple, Amazon, Google...working together... Yes, wonderful, I definitely want more of my data harvested
Wow! You have more data that's not already being harvested? Personally I'd figure out how to monetize that data ASAP. Most useful data doesn't age well and has little to no value within weeks or even days. Strike while the iron is hot!
Be careful what you wish for, you might get it and some more.
I would love to put Siri and Google assistants and apps on my Amazon devices.
Ikea has smart devices like lights, speakers, and blinds. Kroger has smart shopping carts.
My smart home device is still my brain - I think 😂...
singularity on the way
This may be a dumb question but here it goes, when matter goes live will I have to upgrade to a new google nest cam and thermostat for it to be able to work with Apple HomeKit? I would love to just use one smart speaker, as of now I have an echo to control these devices and a HomePod for my everyday Apple uses like mail, calling, text and music.
So you could connect google/amazon accesories in Homekit?
I can’t think of a reason Apple needs this type of gig.🇺🇸🐻
Matter matters.
Imagine not being able to hide from any of these companies. Imagine not having any privacy. Wait. I don't have to imagine....
Then the Netflix suggestion algorithm wouldn’t work and we would have a chaos in Supply Chain
Also… you would need to unpack all the products you buy and remove labeling to avoid influence … but as soon as the person would be out home … would be at mercy of all ads and marketing.
Can you imagine if Amazon, Google and Apple did combined forces? Poor Facebook 🤣
Is there a list or site of Matter based products / Apps?
The beginning of SKYNET! 😉
Cortana left out of the party 😂
“Would be great to ask google assistant on a sonos speaker to turn on the apple tv connected to a Samsung screen without touching the smart things app 😂!”
This will be amazing! I have Amazon Echo devices, a Samsung phone and and Apple IPad… Currently it is really annoying that some of my smart devices work with each other and some don’t! I have a couple of smart bulbs, a smart TV and a few smart plugs and while most of them work automatically with my phone only one of the bulbs works with my iPad, unless I use the Alea app on my iPad, so I cant just ask Siri to turn on the light or turn on the lamp, but the Apple compatible smart devices are generally way more expensive and some of them wont work with say Alexa or Android.. This would be a game changer!
MATTER is good for the Apple, Amazon and Google - they will start making new devices compliant with MATTER. It means we'll (consumers) need to buy new devices too and the business continues.
This is very exciting. It will be great to use any smart speaker to control the home. I currently have Echo and Homepod. I didn’t get it when I saw the Apple event, but this video helped me understand why Matter matters!
About time!
Perhaps a consequence of all the current and anticipated antitrust action.
The CHIP alliance, should also make universal rooms and scenes that sync across all your smart home ecosystems
1 question. Is matter software or does it require a hardware chip?
More like both software and hardware need to be involved for it
Like an hardware as processing unit to process the command and software to decode and do the given instructions
It matters

They do solve all the problems and delete all the confusions to build a smart work or home environments but what about the past products? Can they be able to upgrade to this new Matter thing with a software update? Or this is a hardware game we are talking about here?
This would make Apple Homepod actually relevant in the smart home space considering how limited it is compared to Google and Alexa. I hope in the future this also means that our cars and homes can be more connected as we use Carplay and Android Auto. But also considering that cars are getting integrated Alexa and Android Automotive, can't I hope it means turning on our cars through our smart speakers
Not sure HomePod has the right antenna for it or whether it’s just HomePod Mini, in which case I’d be interested to know what sort of trade in you can get on an original HomePod in good condition?
Does this replace Thread as a way for devices to communicate?
What i know is, Matter supports Wi-Fi, Thread, and BLE, so it will not replace Thread (Sorry if i'm wrong)
Instead, if you have a hub that has Thread (Like Nest Hub Max), it should be able to control a Thread device locally (Smart lamp, smart plug, etc.)
I'm curious how deep these integrations will be with matter. Will this help with security?
Man I would love it if Comcast Xfinity voice remote worked with my other smart home stuff, it's a great remote but super disconnected from the rest of my system
Xfinity has the right idea but will be charging extra for the home connect feature got it in a letter recently. It’s ok I only use Apple HomeKit 😅
I love seeing a "standard" in smart homes....
to me its like the old records, 8 tracks, cassettes, and CDs
Just think if say CDs didnt have a standard.... then each CD would have to make a CD for Sony players.... Apple players.... Amazon players.... etc....etc...etc... which would be never ending and very costly... this way, you buy what product you like, and any other product you purchase will work 100% with any products you have. Its a win, win for customers
What about other smaller companies? What about brands yet to be released? Does it allow for new innovation and competition?
Sounds good, I am on the Apple Ecosystem, my parents have since introduced Alexa into the house, Wouldn’t it be great if I could drop in to my Mum’s dot from the lounge where the HomePod Mini is, it’s about time you could buy a smart home device without having to worry whether it’s HomeKit compatible or rather works with Alexa, like when Hive married up with Alexa but remained incompatible with Siri
What's the watch on his wrist?
Nice
What about Thread? ......
Cries in Mi devices
The protocol is less meaningful, IMO than the fact that they aren't creating a more unified and accessible API
Most things Matter does, could already be done by Zigbee - what we actually need is more access to our smart devices via standardised APIs so that we can make them do what we actually want, rather than what the manufacturer tells us we can do
Did he say "IKEA for some reason.." ?
FINALLY!
I don't see a downside to that. Yeah they may favor their own smart speakers and add features to hype them up. It'll be nice to be able to control stuff from an iPhone when someone you live with owns an Android and there's an Echo speaker and a Nest thermostat
What about the data? Would competing brands (say Apple) allow their rivals (say Amazon) access to their customer data? What about Apple's schtick with data privacy? And Amazon's blatant disregard for that?!?
Well you just wouldn’t add those devices to Alexa or just not buy Alexa hubs. It’s quite simple.
And someday we'll have to ask our home computer for permission to leave the house and for how long. HaHa just kidding.
Why the surprrse about IKEA? They make smart items plugs, lights, bulbs...
Just a matter of time, when they will charge us to turn on me lights..
Midi worked out well 40+ odd years ago…
What happens to Homebridge and Hoobs after Matter?
It won’t magically break existing integrations. I’m sure all existing HomeKit devices will continue to work, perhaps what will happen is the prevalence of HomeKit certified devices will sharply decline, since the manufacturers will just certify for Matter.
YES big Tech sharing ALL personal info with each other! That’s just what I have ALWAYS wanted
Apple will never do that
It's open source. Maybe that will keep them honest?
That’s exactly what THEY have always wanted.
Oh no, they know how I like my lights and what music I listen.
Not only do you use to add "finally" too much you pronounce it "finely" too much. 🙃
Most smart smart home tech already can be used with both Alexa and Google Assistant so I couldn't care less. and if a product doesn't support the one I need the company doesn't get my money because they obviously don't seem to want it 🤷♂️
I can't be impressed with high tech until I can download a waffle.
How does this video have so little views?!?!? Thisbis thr biggest f-ing news in a to long!
Matter matters but does the matter in the matter matters?
"Ikea for some reason", come on, you can do better research than that. They have a whole smart light lineup called Trådfri. Great video though!
Great now all devices (iPhone included) should use USB C.
Why would Amazon and Google open the door for Apple?
Well…. Apple HomeKit were widely used as well, and there always some people that just want to use all different ecosystem for some reason
So….. this Matter alliance would be great for those peps who loves to use iPhones but often rely on Google nest for smart home stuff. As well with other smart appliances that work with HomeKit or Google Home
IKEA for some reason? Hello? Trådfri smart home stuff and smart speakers.
Finally
Basically bluetooth and wifi standards
What a nightmare and invasion of privacy i can do without. The more smarts u have the less secure your home and privacy will be. Don't trust them one bit.
I have a solid state electric fridge that uses a pair of 92mm case fans to cool the heatsink a side of the two TECs that chill the content of the fridge.
The two el-cheapo fans it came with packed up in about 3-4 weeks.
I've replaced them with two Arctic Cooling 92mm 3-pin case fans.
The 3 pins are:
+12 VDC
0 V ground
Sense, goes high for each revolution.
I'm going to add an ESP32 MCU + WiFi+ Bluetooth 4.2 which will read the sense pins and calculate the RPM. Then I need to publish this information somehow using an industry standard for home automation.
Then notify myself if the fans stop turning.
Does anybody know what standards that I can use are called? I don't want to reinvent the wheel, see?
What about Xiaomi?
IKEA needs to join the party!
This is only a big deal for people in the Apple HomeKit ecosystem, if you are in the Alexa or Google Assistant ecosystem then pretty much every smart device out there is compatible 😂
will the ring security system FINALLY work with Google assistant??
@@juriaanoussoren nope, the ring app thing for google assistant is broken and won't work... hasn't been updated in years
Possibly. I mean, if it's gonna be a universal standard, then why it won't?
or super villain line up
Chef Boyardee
Woah
great for couch potatoes
I have a smart person in my home !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not before wifi7 we Will get a well connected Home until then it does not Matter
I just want to know why Kroger is on the list
Sounds like Amazon sidewalk, but way creepier because now all the big 3 are involved! Buyer beware.
This is not even the same thing at all. How is this creepy?
Cool. Is Tesla on board?????
😘😘😘❤️
Orwellian. The goal is to collect data. Talking across platforms is a necessary step to achieve more individual data acquisition. The consumer does not own or control the data generated.
Screw this team-up bull. What we need are federal standards. These communication languages need to get up to the basic standards of wall outlets. Apple's already getting in trouble for their constant changing of their chargers, and we need to spread that to all methods that electronics interact.
Apple’s constant changing of chargers?
They switched their mobile device charging port once in the last decade, from the analogue, non reversible, and bulky 30-pin connector to the digital, reversible, lightning connector.
Most people are complaining that Apple doesn’t switch their iPhone charging ports again to USB-C…
You mean they refuse to use the standard.
Good step in the right direction. I’m going away from the Echo ecosystem and go with Apple and this would amazing
i like my dumb home thank you
It’s an opinion.
Maybe amazon and google, but apple will never do this, they’re too proud
I disagree just because Apple doesn’t have their own smart home products outside of HomePod and AppleTV. They just offer supper for outsiders
first three minutes dragged on in introducing what it is and its purpose. could have summed that up in a few sentences... saving 3 minutes.
Good step in right direction
When you look at the what companies are in zigbee alliance and with the matter you see that those are same companies. Not very promising. Btw ikea is making smart home devices. I have smart bulbs and switches and that terrible ikea hub which is lacking so many features but is only hub which you can use to update ikea devices.
Why do you have compare it to a movie a franchise? Good grief you really have to work on your journalism.
Thread just came out basically and Apple invested thread chips on their new devices… I don’t really see this taking off… I’ll believe it when I see it.
