Someday when this terrible time is past, and someone asks me “how’d you get through it,” I’ll say one reason was Leland Sklar’s videos. Truly a salve.

Great words from a true gentleman. I’m so glad that you started this RUclips channel and your clubhouse. It makes the world smaller and more tolerable to know that we can all be friends together. I and thousands of others look forward to your daily chats and hopefully you feel closer to your fans in this way. Take care Lee and remember to give yourself some time to chill. Give the dogs a cuddle from us all too. Stay safe.

Hi Lee, Helene here. It’s so easy to fall into melancholia these days..I find myself fighting it allot these days...as do my friends. I’m from the Northwest, and seeing the fires and the toll on wildlife there, on top of Covid and the politics.....it sometimes feels like I have a perpetual lump in my throat. And then Brian May posted last night about a new law in England that he fought so hard against and how sad it made him.......I know exactly how you are feeling.....life is fragile and very fleeting. All we have is the moment, and the love and support we give to one another that makes life worth living. This is the human condition. You are a balm for us all, and hopefully, dear Lee, we can try to be a balm for your spirit as well.

Leland Sklar just watched your Zoom interview with Steve et al on The Session. What a great group....could have gone on longer. Man, I could really see that Steve must have been a REALLY “wild and crazy” guy back in the day. What energy.....And most of all, the final message that you all put out there.....a lifetime of living and experience, and it all comes down to the same thing: Love one another, be kind to one another, and don’t lose hope. Allot of wisdom in that hang......Lee, would you ever consider providing links to some of these interviews you are doing? I’m sure so many of your subs would love to watch that interview you did today...

My thoughts dwell most on the youngest of our people. I was a youngster growing up in the 50s.i knew the security of a nation full of family values , no locked doors. Trick or treating until 11pm , Meals eaten together, traditions honored. We seldom questioned our nation and were ready to defend her. Those who are youngest of ys have not grown up with the joy and comfort I knew as a child. God bless and keep us all.

I understand you completely Leland. I lost my best friend David Gomez Jr. to Cancer in 2005. It's been 15 year's and i think about him every day... He was the BEST musician i ever knew. His main axe was the guitar but he also played keyboard and was an all around artist. When i listen to all the classics we grew up listening to i think of him. When i hear new music that reminds me of the classics, i think of him. I talk to myself and say, what would he think about that bassline, what would he think of that riff or how about that awesome drum pattern! He's ALIVE and so are your loved one's Mr. Sklar... Just like when we go visit them at their memorials. It's a living, breathing act of love. ❤☮🎵

Hi Lee, as a Canadian and a frequent traveler to the US; in particular Los Angeles and NYC, my heart goes out to you all during these devastating times both now and the past. My must recent visit to NYC in November 2019 included my second visit to the WTC museum as well as a visit to the 101st floor of the new One World Trade Center. Like many, as I too stood next to the observatory windows and looked over to the city, I thought about the people who were in the original towers and the horror they went through as they lived their final moments. Again, my thoughts and prayers go out to them, their families and all who are facing devastation on your West Coast. Lee, thank you for again bringing to light all the people that we sometimes we take for granted. The First Responders, Medical Professions, Grocery Store Clerks, Walmart Workers etc., etc., etc. You, Mr. Sklar, are a beacon of light in these troubling times and I come to your VLOG for your inspiration, humor and education (BTW thanks for the tip on the SSL2 as I just got one and LOVE IT!). I would certainly like to meet you some day so I could shake your hand...or at least give you a fist bump. W.

Hey Leland. I too get in a funk and go melancholic, much more now than ever before. Cautious as I am about this virus, I wonder about “what if I get it?” - and in my doldrums, I feel like what the hell, Karma, I needed to get off this goddamn bus anyway, given the way the world is going.. I'll be able to join John Prine and "smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long!" But then a friend will call and want some help with something, or I’ll meet up with my lunch buddies (now, in a socially-distanced setting at a local park outdoors) and I’ll be whole again and feel like we're going to get through this and be able to look back on it. Likewise you have The Immediate Family, and others, and now this RUclips Family - just like my lunch buddies! Look at the comments on this post alone! We are all together with you and your sentiments. Om Shanti!

You know I recently was watching Glenn Kirchner a retired Federal Prosecutor talk about healing. He said there is no healing without accountability (as it relates to family’s of homocide victims)and as a 30 plus year nursing career in critical care I truly believe that’s true. Until we hold our political ‘leaders” accountable none of us nor our country can heal. I think the first step is being able to elucidate our loss and process the emotions as best we can, then carry on. Say did you ever play with KANSAS?

yes, things cause one to stop, reflect, and think about people ... like when I visited NYC after 9/11 and standing there, watching the removal of the debris ... it is somber, melancholy, but gives one a chance to think about the people we know, those we lost, and then move forward with greater purpose and commitment to make things better

Thanks, Leland. Yes, loss is hard and we all have to deal with it in our own way. Lost a friend right after graduating high school, and both parents are gone as well as an uncle not IN Vietnam, but as a result of being there. A few others, too. Hard not to be reflective at times, but to me, if you are, you can learn to not take people for granted and appreciate the time with folks more.
On another note, a question: as a session and touring guy, have you turned down any jobs because at the time genre or even a particular song?

Stay true to your heart and your soul and don't get distracted by the news and politics.
It does matter what you think of yourself when the end comes and the end will come for all of us. There is no way to manipulate it.
Because I know this, I try to keep it proper to remember to stay true to myself and not get lost.
Take a step back and see from a distance.
Be proud and true and don't get lost in the world and enjoy being allowed to still be here.
Be the example of what you wish others would do by letting them see you doing it.

    Hey Kids,
I've got a story that is appropriate today. Lee it's doesn't involve you, I hope you're not upset.
In the early 90's while in college at L.S.U. I purchased an LP at a garage sale for $.25 and it changed my life. I'd never heard of the artist and bought it on a whim based on the title which had reggae in it. I figured for a quarter what's to lose. And I like reggae and ska, although I thought ska was the Specials, the English Beat, Madness, Police etc... I was big into that in my youth.
It should be noted I was a freshman at LSU at the age of 25. I fucked off many years after High School chasing the Grateful Dead around. It should also be noted that to me reggae consisted of Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and Peter Tosh. That was it.
The LP was Toots and the Maytals "Reggae's Got Soul" I was floored, and listened to it over and over and over. It was so different to what I thought reggae was. The LP led me on a musical journey. I started digging into reggae, and at the time the internet was available, however new as it was the old dial up AOL. The album led my to the "Harder They Come" soundtrack. which led me to Desmond Dekkar and the Aces, The Melodians, Skatalites, The Heptones, and The Paragons etc... It led me to Trojan Records. I learned that Ska was 50's music. I learned that Rocksteady, which was bandied about by the Specials and such, was around in the 60's. It also led me to Calypso, and JuJu music and opened me up to a whole genra, and rhythms, and sounds of music I never knew existed nor dreamed I would ever listen to.
So my contribution to your post is to say thank you to Toots Hibbert, whom we lost yesterday. RIP and thanks for turning me on to your world. I, and the world are richer for your existence.

There is in most of us, an almost (if not) instinctual terror that comes with confronting uncontrolled fire. Hopefully a professional firefighter can go their entire career without ever feeling such a lack of control of their situation but these wildfires almost certainly push the limits of that hope. A short story... I toured with Canned Heat in Australia around 97/98.. & after each show, myself & Henry Vestine would retire to his or my room & smoke a joint or several, drink a few beers..& watch the cricket, ( the 'Ashes series live from England).. Henry had worsening Parkinson's disease, which was not evident when he played each night, but at dinner I'd sometimes steady his hand to help him eat.. Unfortunately, he died on the next tour, but the moments we shared will stay with me forever...& he left doing the thing he loved...his music lives on & he lived each day full of life.. If we could all just appreciate every day & every breath, as something special, instead of worrying about tomorrow, life becomes a joy & more bearable, whatever else is going on !!..Be here now..as Henry used to say to me..!!. Sorry for rambling..

I miss live music and shows. Now we walk 3 to 4 miles a day listening to great books(we each lost 10 pounds) My wife has become a prolific painter, even selling some. I have played my guitar and recorded music more than I ever had the chance to. I even collaborate with my son who is across the country in Cali.(he is so good!) Being there for each other is going to be key for our survival.........within the artists community, people like yourself sharing fun stories and music, even for 15-20min, is a big deal!
I'm extremely grateful for our fire fighters, and healthcare workers. I just had to go in for a small procedure. When something terrible like 9/11 happens on one's dang birthday, it's really hard not to take in personally. On the flip side, I think all firefighters should be able to wear that big red S-symbol on their chests. May they win all their battles.

My grandma kept a diary with paper and fountain pen, which no one read in her life. Doogie Howser kept one on his PC for viewers to read over his shoulder. You keep your diary on RUclips for many to listen and see, with all the emotions laid bare. Thanks for sharing with us, for yourself, and posterity.

Hey Le, I lost my daughter 20 months ago. She was 33 and left behind a husband and 5 year old daughter. It’s been a struggle to cope with life ever since but she was such a wonderful person throughout her life I have to value each day we had rather than be sad for each day she didn’t have. I had stopped playing for a living to raise my family but started playing again once my children were grown. To my surprise daughter loved watching me play in my “dad” band. For a long time, playing was one of only two things that lifted me out of my grief after she passed. The other was playing with my grandkids. Life is precious. Enjoy each day and enjoy each other because you never know when it will end. Your playing and your personality brings light into this world Le, I appreciate that. ❤️

Lay down your weary tune, lay down
Lay down the song you strum
And rest yourself ’neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum
Struck by the sounds before the sun
I knew the night had gone
The morning breeze like a bugle blew
    Against the drums of dawn
Lay down your weary tune, lay down
Lay down the song you strum
And rest yourself ’neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum
The ocean wild like an organ played
    The seaweed’s wove its strands
The crashin’ waves like cymbals clashed
    Against the rocks and sands
Lay down your weary tune, lay down
Lay down the song you strum
And rest yourself ’neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum
I stood unwound beneath the skies
    And clouds unbound by laws
The cryin’ rain like a trumpet sang
    And asked for no applause
Lay down your weary tune, lay down
Lay down the song you strum
And rest yourself ’neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum
The last of leaves fell from the trees
And clung to a new love’s breast
The branches bare like a banjo played
To the winds that listened best
I gazed down in the river’s mirror
    And watched its winding strum
The water smooth ran like a hymn
And like a harp did hum
Lay down your weary tune, lay down
Lay down the song you strum
And rest yourself ’neath the strength of strings
No voice can hope to hum
Your reflection prompted a memory of this song by Bob Dylan. Not sure why. But it seems to fit. I think maybe we’re all feeling the need for some “Shelter From The Storm”. Love and blessings, Lee.

A couple songs come to mind in this time of somber thoughts. One is Willie Nelson’s ‘Something You Get Through’ that has the line about losing the one you love isn’t “something you get over, but it’s something you get through.” And the other one is directly tied to 9/11, and that’s Mark Knopfler’s song ‘If This Is Goodbye.” Music certainly has a way of letting you know that you’re not alone in your thoughts. Savor your memories but don’t let them get you down. Every day we’re on this side of the grass is a good day! “Enjoy every sandwich.”
    Take care and stay safe!

Today is Neil Peart's birthday. His first since his passing earlier this year in January. He would've been 68 today. Dying of brain cancer after a three year battle he kept very quiet to the public. And then after he died, the whole world goes to crap. Coincidence? I think not. His loss has affected everyone in rock drumming and music in general. Rock In Paradise, Neil. #RUSH #TheProfessor
