- After Big Star finished mixing #1 RECORD, they played it in the studio for Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys. Carl loved it so much he called Brian Wilson to hear it on speakerphone. This story from Terry Manning didn't make our Big Star episode but it's too good not to share.

Alex Chilton Chris Bell and Carl Wilson sitting in a room together with Brian Wilson on the phone. Heavy
Great story---nice to know the two Beach boy brothers had such a deep connection and they got to hear the music of Big Star together.
#1 Record is Chris Bell’s masterpiece. RIP, Chris, love you.
Well……, What did Brian think of the album ??
Amazing story
I Would Have Loved To Meet Carl Wilson The Very Best Beach Boy
Beautiful
Would love to hear Part 2 of this story! What were the final comments of both Carl and Brian? What transpired once finished playing Big Star? Was there any future meeting ever? Wish you could play the song and identify where Carl asked to stop!
Terry Manning is one of the coolest guys in the industry. Friends with both the Wilsons and Jimmy Page, who mutually admired him as well
Yeah, didn’t Terry mix Led Zep 3 at Ardent?
@@melodymakermark Yep---same guy responsible for the "Immigrant Song"--recorded in Memphis!
@@melodymakermark He may have done ZZ Top as well, I don't know
So cool
When did Brian Wilson tour with Alex Chilton (Must have been the box tops)?
I don't think Brian did but the Beach Boys did in October 1967 and played shows with them in 68 and 69 (none of which Brian played at). Maybe Brian went to watch one of them? We know Brian was a fan of The Letter and covered it for Lei'd in Hawaii in August/September and again for Wild Honey in late October of 67.
Brian didn’t tour with them but the Boys did in ‘68. Brian likely knew them before hand and there’s a fair chance he met the Box Tops during rehearsals or in the studio
I think Alex spent some time at Dennis Wilson’s house. Isn’t that where Alex met Charles Manson? Anyway, Alex could’ve met Brian on a number of occasions.
He didn't. The Beach Boys did, but not with Brian. Alex met him in 1968 when he visited LA.
Gangster
fuck yeah
