My parents lived in Batu Arang, from 1951-1957, during the Malaysian Emergency. My father was an engineer. They had three of their four children there. I was their third child. The coal mine was guarded by Gurkas and a Scottish Highland Regiment. The Highland Regiment used to practise playing their bagpipes early every morning - drove the Malays nuts, I understand. The coal mine was the only mine in Malaysia, consequently at the time of steam trains and steam ships all requiring coal to run the mine’s existence was of prime importance. This is why the mine was so heavily guarded and why the communist bandits tried to take it over on 2 separate occasions. In its heyday Batu Arang was an important, large town very important to the Malaysian economy. The coal mine, the brick works and other associated works/industries are long gone, as the video shows.
When we are entering Batu Arang Town off the main road to Batang Berjuntai, after the Ranger's home/ office on the left not far there's a cinema hall on top of a hill. I often glanced at the cinema building when going to Batu Barang town. It was still in good shape few years ago.
