I know these are the more popular majors, but what about the other majors like Psychology? Is the programs and opportunity just as good?

I’m currently vegetarian/trying to go vegan and I’ve noticed a lot of criticism regarding the dining halls. Are there enough options for someone eating vegan at American? Also, do you agree that the dining halls aren’t the best or are some better than others?

    I just got into AU and I’m strongly considering attending this fall. I was also considering GWU but I don’t like how disconnected and widespread it is and I like that AU is in a suburban area but you still have easy access to downtown DC. Are there any drawbacks to AU’s smaller size? Also, thanks for the video, it’s really helpful and relieves some stress!!

    • @LinusManchester
      @LinusManchester  4 года назад +14

      Congrats, Atef! I went through the same thing and ultimately chose AU because it does feel like a traditional liberal arts campus that is 20 minutes from downtown. Personally, my experience with the city hasn’t been inhibited by AU’s size or location. I commute downtown for an internship once a week and it’s not a problem- I usually can make the trip (including a half mile walk) in just over a half hour. GW is a great school for a lot of the same fields, but for me it was just too urban. I personally appreciate AU’s nature-vibe and honestly, most of the time it doesn’t feel like it’s in the city. I think it’s relaxing to be free of the noise and bustle. Congratulations and good luck with your decision! Remember, whichever school you choose will offer you opportunities and it’s up to you to make what you want of them. Hope this helped and thanks for watching.

      @madisonslevin3882 4 года назад +3

      Hi Olivia! Saw your comment and thought I could help you out. I'm a freshman at AU right now as well. The food is not everyone's favorite, can't lie. Most students bond over complaining about it. The dorms are really nice in my opinion, especially if you can get placed in Anderson. I personally think Anderson Hall is better than Centennial (the suite-style residence). I was also apart of the University College program which was amazing. It happened to my favorite class that semester. Being in that program also gives you a really high chance of being placed in Anderson Hall because the program keeps the UC cohorts together in the residence halls. Hope this helps!

      Linus Manchester I have a question about the social life at AU. So right now i'm between AU and Pitt (the much cheaper option). I will be a poly sci major so I know AU is the best place for that, especially with its location in DC and abundant internship opportunities. However, the one thing that is holding me back is the social life and social aspects. How could you describe the social life at AU for guys? I know AU is majority women, which is not a bother, but I want to make sure I will still find plenty friends and such. I enjoy discussing politics and stuff like that, but not ALL the time - even I get bored of that after awhile. Anything you could tell would be great!

    • @jackruotolo1257
      @jackruotolo1257 4 года назад

      I am also a bit more of the conservative side (although trending to the other side recently), and I know AU is VERY liberal - at least from what i've heard and seen. That really doesn't bother me like it does other people, but I want to make sure I will still be able to get along with everyone and make good friends that aren't political-based, if you know what I mean.

    • @LinusManchester
      @LinusManchester  4 года назад

      Jack, I think you’ll fit right in. AU is definitely super politically active but there are absolutely people who are either conservative or not rampantly liberal. I can speak from my experience- I’m a part of a few organizations and have friends in them that I never discuss politics with. It’s not difficult to just relax and enjoy each other’s company. Everything depends on who you surround yourself with, and I promise you can find people at AU that you enjoy spending time with.

    Hi! I was accepted into AU for fall 2020! I was also accepted into the Politics, Policy and Law Program and I was wondering if you knew anything about that program! Unfortunately, I wasn't given enough aid to go to AU without taking out loans. Do you think that it is worth going to AU and being over 100k in debt when I have substantial scholarships from other schools? A benefit of the PPL program is that I can receive a masters degree along with my BA in only four years at AU.

    Wassup bro, I just got accepted into the school of international service. But I’m having trouble deciding where I want to go for college but American is definitely the best school I’ve gotten into. I have two quick questions 1. What are your favorite and least favorite things about American university.2. How is the overall atmosphere of the campus? Thanks for the video tho.

    • @LinusManchester
      @LinusManchester  4 года назад +6

      Congrats, Kai! And great questions. 1. My favorite thing is the people. Everyone is excited to be here and it shows. You’ll meet a lot of people here that you can relate and get along with. Least favorite thing is how expensive it is, but honestly that’s how it is nowadays. I understand they’re having to compete with other universities and unfortunately the effect is a higher tuition. There are benefits to that, of course. 2. Campus is very politically active, but it’s hard to classify the whole of it as anything else. There are a lot of distinct groups here with different vibes- film/theatre kids, business kids, highly politically active kids. So I’d say it depends on who you hang out with. The good news (and the difference between AU and high school) is that these groups aren’t cliquey in my experience. You can belong to multiple, as do many students. Overall, I really like the school and the social life has been a big part of it for me. I’ve found that everyone is motivated academically and by other interests. Hope this helped! Thanks for watching.

    Hey! I got into American University and I got a decent scholarship to go but another university is allowing me to go for only 8k a year for tuition. Do you think AU is worth the money? and how much do they usually offer in fin aid?

    • @LinusManchester
      @LinusManchester  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for the question, Brina, and congratulations on your college acceptances!! These choices are always difficult and, as you point out, they unfortunately usually do come down to money. It’s hard to quantify the value of a college education: there’s no baseline by which to judge the price of a school. So in your case, it’s really going to depend on the quality of the respective schools and the tuition discrepancies. Personally, I think AU, like plenty of other schools, is a bit overpriced. The good news is that very few students pay the full tuition. On the other hand, $8k is hard to ignore. I’d look at the specific program you’re applying for. For example, AU’s SIS, SPA, and communications schools are, in my estimation, worth the extra money. But if you’d like to study something that AU isn’t necessarily “known for,” go with the $8k by all means. I wish I could give you a more thorough answer but the truth is, it’s hard to predict how valuable your education is going to be. Spend some time looking at the respective programs that each school offers and decide if one is far and away the better option. Hopefully this helped and thanks for watching!

    • @LinusManchester
      @LinusManchester  4 года назад +2

      I’d look to save money wherever you can. My friends who live in triples have mostly had positive experiences, and the room assignment process is the same as for doubles: they’ll try to match you with people that have similar habits, bed times, etc. As long as you’re ok with not having a lot of space (which basically means you won’t spend a lot of time in your room, which I think personally is a good thing), a triple is definitely a viable option. Thanks for watching! Hope this helped.

    Hey Linus! I got into AU and am an incoming freshman this fall, I’m majoring in Political Science and got assigned Leonard Hall. Linus would you say centennial is worth it? I’m considering taking a single there just for the more privatized bathroom.

    • @LinusManchester
      @LinusManchester  2 года назад

      Hi Ryan, thanks for your comment. I had a great experience in Anderson living in a double with a shared bathroom but I did have friends who lived in Centennial who loved it. If the extra rate isn’t an issue, I’d look into the single with your own bathroom but you might also want to think about the pros/cons of sharing a space as a freshman. Having a roommate can be a good experience as a freshman and it can be especially good early on when you’re trying to meet people in the beginning of school. Either way- both living options are good. It comes down to your personal needs! Hope this helps and congrats on AU.

    • @LinusManchester
      @LinusManchester  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for asking such an important question. AU is definitely expensive, even with a good financial aid package.
      Something to keep in mind: AU is a top 10 school for International Relations and Public Affairs (as well as a couple other particular majors). If you're going to study one of these majors, AU is a great option. Otherwise, I'd look elsewhere. AU is definitely a niche school but it's excellent for those specific majors.
      Hope this is helpful and thanks for watching, Kiara!

    • @jeijeiwebb
      @jeijeiwebb 4 года назад +3

      Hey Kiara! I also go to AU and, I wanted to let you know that it all depends on who you ask.
      There are lots of amazing opportunities and facilities here at AU, even if you're not focused in International Studies or Public Affairs (and Communications is also known for being really prestigious). It all just depends on how you spend your time.
      Personally, I am a freshman so I've left myself more free time for this year. I don't have an internship, and I don't know what field I'm going to go in when I graduate, but I do have an on-campus job and I'm involved in a club. However, I really have enjoyed myself so far: I've met lots of like-minded people, I enjoy my classes, I have a close relationship with my advisor, etc.
      I'm not gonna lie. It is a LOT of money. I have a scholarship that covers half of my tuition, and I'm still taking out loans. I talk to some of my friends who go to state schools, and they're paying significantly less (and sometimes nothing at all), which definitely makes me jealous. But I don't regret my decision. This is just me. If you think AU is right for you, then I'd say it's worth it.
      Hope this helps!

    I got into AU but I’m not sure to go because I’m going to be majoring in biology but AU is very international/politics oriented and I feel like STEM majors will be overlooked. Any advice?

      Thanks for watching, Omar! AU is currently building up its STEM program, with Neuroscience emerging as one of the up and coming majors. However, in my experience, the vast majority of AU is focused on non-STEM fields. My advice: if you’ve gotten into other schools where STEM is a bigger focus, consider them. But if you really love AU and maybe are thinking about combining Biology with another topic (like International Relations, Public Health, or Communications), AU can provide you that option. It’s good to enter college with an open mind, and AU can help with that. Good luck with your decision!!

    what's your major/what do you want to major in?

    • @LinusManchester
      @LinusManchester  4 года назад +1

      I'm in the School of International Service (SIS), which means I'm pursuing an International Relations major. It's one of the most popular majors here and prepares students for foreign service and diplomacy. A lot of SIS grads end up working in the Peace Corps, for instance. If you're interested in politics and international affairs, it's definitely a major to consider.
      Hope this helped! Thanks for watching :)

    Hey. I'm from California and got admitted to AU and I'm considering this school. Can u answer my questions plz? AU says that it is diverse with international students, but how is the African immigrant pop.? Also, I plan to get involved alot on campus and possibly do a double major. Do you think there will be time to do all this and still explore the city and it's resources? Also, how lively is the campus from scale of 1-10? Thank you! I haven't even mentioned Covid-19😓

      Hey Nirvana. I’m Linus’s girlfriend and even tho I’m not an African Immigrant, I have had more interactions with the black community on campus than Linus. We’re both freshman so pls understand that this is by no means this is the end all be all. That being said, like 80% of the black students that I’ve met are African immigrants or children of African immigrants. Additionally, there are a few clubs that could allow you to get involved with that community like Africa Legal Conference (ALC) and/or there are some dance groups that I know of too. Actual demographics wise, I honestly couldn’t tell you tho. Concerning workload and exploration in the city, I’m sure once you build a solid schedule you will be able to find time for the things you love. However, I personally warn against trying to do everything in your freshman year. Give yourself time to enjoy the college experience and DC! You’ve worked hard for it so no matter where you go, even if it’s not AU, I wouldn’t rush into a million commitments, you’ll be fine and you can build up over time. Currently, as you know covid-19 has changed a lot for everyone, so it’s a different time. But campus used to be I guess... a 6 (maybe 7) on the liveliness scale? There are always events and it’s most populated in between classes. But it’s still a relatively small campus so there aren’t always things going on. It’s also more populated in the spring and summer when it’s not too cold to hang out on the quad. I’m not sure what you’re looking for, but I hoped this helped! Best wishes and don’t be afraid to reach out on social media @linusmanchester on insta ☺️
