This pretty much sums up my experience with Sonic The Hedgehog as a series too, I very distinctly remember that my first ever game was the 2004 pc port of Sonic Adventure and my dumb 3 year old brain didn't know what the hell was going on but I knew that Sonic was moving fast and facing dangers several times his size without even a hint of fear, and that sparked something in me. I didn't even knew what the story was, my first language is Spanish, not English, so as far as I knew Sonic and his friends were saying complete gibberish. From there I had a PS2 with Sonic Heroes and Riders on it and I played the two games endlessly upon realizing how much more of Sonic was out there. In my early teen years I started to learn English and I emulated every other Sonic game I missed, including Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Colors by that time. I played Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure on my DS, it was wonderful growing up surrounded with Sonic games because it was very much like he would always be there for me regardless of what happened the rest of the day.
And when I learned English more and more, and when I started to understand the stories and see opinions online, I remember feeling so conflicted. I remember seeing all the bad faith criticism of all Sonic games and wondering if I was just delusional, I remember somewhat being embarrassed of liking Sonic games and started to shut down my passion for the series in fear of liking something bad, and it remained like that up until around 2016 when I came across a video of a channel called Game Apologist about Super Tails and why it mattered, and that video alone gave me a whole new reason to revisit the Sonic games once more and watch more content made by fans, by people who might not necessarily like Sonic's current games or anything, but saw something special in the series and still love it because of it. I replayed Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 with the Japanese voice acting just to hear Sonic's Japanese voice (and to this day I'd say it's probably the best voice he's ever had, I hope Jun'ichi never dies), I recently got around to playing Sonic Unleashed after never being able to, and playing Frontiers, for as many flaws as the game has, showed me that at least there are a few people in Sonic Team who want to make the series justice, just like the rest of the fanbase.
If nothing else, I at least know that if I had to become obsessed with a series, I would pick Sonic endlessly, it has been there for me my whole life, it has inspired who I am as a person and what I aim to create myself, and it showed that it is possible to bounce back from growing pains. If Sonic could recover from Sonic 2006, Rise of Lyric, and Forces; I'm pretty sure I can recover from anything as well

I've never played any of the games in Japanese, but honestly, I might one day since I hear Jun'ichi is good! It's so awesome to see how much of an impact the franchise made on you!

Lmao was this a documentary about my experiences as a Sonic fan? Joking aside, we had a damn near identical experience. I don't quite exactly remember when or how I got into the series but I do remember Heroes was one of my first exposures to this series and I became obsessed as a kid watching a bunch of Sonic stopmotions, playthroughs, AMVs, etc. I regularly woke up every Saturday morning to watch Sonic X and I even tried recording entire episodes on my video camera. Then the 2010s came around, I didn't own a Wii at the time so I couldn't play Colors but I did play Generations. Had a lot of fun but something felt wrong to me. The voice actor switch caught me off guard and was disappointed by the lack of story but I was able to brush it off. 2 years later in 2013, I remember watching that Lost world trailer and felt... nothing. That was the first time I wasn't hyped for anything Sonic related. At around middle school, a group of kids who used make fun of me for liking Sonic (They watched game grumps) showed me Sonjc Boom trailer and were bursting with laughter over the new Knuckles design. Personally, I hated it too and all of Boom tbch. I was in high school when Forces released and I was actually really excited despite how annoyed I was seeing classic Sonic again. I remember driving to Best Buy purchasing my copy and was as excited as I was as a kid to play this game just to be met with a giant disappointment. At this point in my life, I became very self conscious with what people thought of me over being a Sonic fan and having my loyalty to this series being strained like that over and over again made me convince myself that those people were all right about me and that I'm a weirdo. For years on after, I pretended to dislike the series just to fit on with everyone else but Frontiers more or less brought me back. Life story aside lol, what are your top 5 favorite Sonic characters?

Also, I totally 100% relate to you on people dunking on you for liking Sonic because thats the EXACT same thing that happened to me in elementary and middle school. It wasn't a fun experience, I'll tell you that XD but it is what it is.
My top 5 favorite Sonic characters? 🤔 Currently as of now...
      1. Sonic(of course lol)

A lot of what you said was super relatable. The way you grew up and the media you consumed throughout the 2000s, it was like I was looking at a mirror reflection. Also I'm surprised you didn't have more to say about Mania especially considering that comment about Crash Bandicoot & MegaMan coming back around that time in 2017.

You have no idea how awesome it feels to see that so many people were exactly like me when it came to how we consumed Sonic media in the 2000s! Thank you so much for watching!
As for Sonic Mania, the main reason I didn't really mention that game, as well as stuff like Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing Transformed(another positive of the 2010s) is because this conversation was more so referring to the 3D Sonic games. Despite me saying in the video that I did grow up with Sonic Mega Collection+, which had all the classic games, I wasn't and am still not really as big of a fan of the classics in general. I'm much more of a fan of the 3D titles. Another thing to mention is that as much as Sonic Mania was a high quality title that brought a lot of positivity to the franchise, that game didn't push the series forward because that game mostly relied on nostalgia.

I am a massive MASSIVE Sonic fan. Loved it as a kid, stopped doing anything Sonic related until I was like around 12-13 during my summer vacation. Had a huge Sonic phase during that time. Then got back into it around summer of 2018, when I was 15 turning 16 and started seeing all the negative stuff said about Sonic. It upset me and made me mad that the reason a lot of Sonic games dipped in quality was because of people who don't even like Sonic criticizing it.
But throughout all that, I kept my passion for the series. And seeing the resurgence of absolute great Sonic content in the 2020s has got me excited to be a Sonic fan.
A little story, during my sophomore year of high school, my friends asked around the table who we liked better between Mario or Sonic. Everyone said Mario, but I said Sonic and had a lot of confused stares at me and that's when one friend started shitting on Sonic to my face. Ironically, that only made me like Sonic more than I had back then and got me back in my Sonic phase (which now won't go away).

This is pretty much word for word my same experience with the franchise as well. Even down to getting stuck at those fans for a bit before checking the manual to see if it mentioned the triangle dive at all. Colors was the very first Sonic game that left me feeling disappointed. Even after all this time, I still haven’t learned to like the performances of the 2010s voice cast. From Colors to Frontiers, the only game I genuinely loved was Generations. Mania was well made, but I wanted all original stages instead of the ones I’ve already played a million times. Frontiers has some good aspects and ideas, but it felt way too much like a fan made proof of concept. The cyberspace stages were all super short and generic, and the open zones have nothing to offer once you collect everything. Even the story and writing felt rather off to me. It was trying so hard to be serious and not be like Forces/Colors, that it forgot to include more lighthearted and fun moments. We literally went from Baldy McNosehair to existential crisis. I will admit that I found existential crisis to be less irritating, but I still wouldn’t call it “good” for Sonic. Sonic games need a nice mix of both lightheartedness and seriousness. I always felt the best examples for that were Adventure 1 and Unleashed. I also enjoy plenty of character interactions. The Riders games were always some of my favorites in that regard. Maybe the next full game will take everything they learned from Frontiers, and make something truly great again.

This video makes me kinda sad, as a kid my first sonic game was classic collection on the ds and I loved the games it included because they were fun and visually appealing with their bright colours
So of course when I got a Wii I was excited to see how sonic would be in 3d so I picked up a copy of sonic unleashed and it felt nothing like what I expected sonic to be, the story to me felt like the series forgot about its theme of freeing the animals and instead was trying to be cool but it left me feeling like the series lost itself, combine that with the more realistic environments and focus on gameplay I felt didn’t belong in this series I decided that sonic wasn’t good in 3d
I held this opinion until I saw a RUclips review talking about how sonic colours was actually a really good sonic game and so i begrudgingly decided to give it a shot and then I was so happy because this was the sonic that I recognized from that ds game, bright colourful cartoony environments, a story about saving creature from being tortured by eggman and I found the comedy funny from then on I decided that this was a series I love
However because I lacked any consoles above the Wii I was forced to play the older 3d games and did grow to like them while still believing colours was what sonic should be in 3d
Eventually I did get myself an Xbox 360 with a copy of Sonic generations and this continued the colours thing about freeing helpless creatures from dr eggman so I was really happy
I couldn’t play lost world because I lacked a Wii u but I loved how the gameplay looked like the classic collection but in 3d and I really liked how it kept the environmental message in its story even tho it tried to be darker, I also really liked zavok and thought he was the best sonic villain to date
When forces was getting promoted I was so excited to see them continue the generations thing but with those more detailed stories from the 2000’s games and I thought the game was a good but nothing special but then I saw everyone online hating it and saying the 2010’s which I originally thought was the renaissance of sonic was now the series at its downfall and that the 2000’s games were better
Being an impressionable teen by this point I agreed with them for years until 2021 when colours ultimate was coming out and everyone was complaining about the game getting picked for a remaster over unleashed and at that moment I realized that I love the 2010’s era the most and I would defend it because to me this is what sonic meant to me
When frontiers was being announced I was heartbroken it felt like the series I loved was caving into the mean people who I was constantly defending my opinions on for the last year and it almost made me leave the series
But then I heard that frontiers wasn’t ignoring the 2010’s era and instead embraces all its eras and then I decided that what I should do, have my preferences but just love the series that brought me joy
So while I respect your opinion on the series I do think dismissing games like lost world by the way it looked was not cool and I also really think you should think about this line you said “all those bad games were still bringing in new sonic fans” and yes they were just like the 2010’s
Honestly at this rate I wouldn’t be suprised if by 2030 the 2010’s fans make videos like this and say the 2020’s era made them not wanna be sonic fans anymore
So in short I’m sorry for this long comment but I felt it was important to try and show why I love the 2010’s era and I hope my comment has inspired you to look at it in a more positive light

Apologies for taking a while to respond to this!
Despite everything I was saying in this video, don't ever take this as me knocking anyone who loved Sonic in the 2010s from Colors and onward. From what I was reading from your comment, it sounds like you're a lot younger than me. Which means if the Sonic you grew up with was the one depicted from Colors, Gens, Lost World, and so on from that era of Sonic, then kudos to you man! I will never take that away from you nor will I shame you. In fact, I think its kinda cool that you found enjoyment from that era of Sonic! At the end of the day, its just a video game, and its not that serious XD.
As for the response, I understand that certain things that many of us late 90s/early 2000s fans love about Sonic may not appeal to you or anyone who was born much later. So if Sonic saving cute animals from Eggman is all you need to satisfy you, I think thats awesome! But for me, Sonic The Hedgehog was a lot more than that. Sonic, to me, was an icon. He was a symbol of a cool kid/hero I always wanted to be since I was a kid. And what helped elevate a lot of that was the much grander stories and seeing all of these other awesome characters respond to the higher stakes and to Sonic himself. As for Sonic Colors Ultimate, even though its not my preferred pick for a Sonic remaster(I'd go for Heroes more than Unleashed XD), I still would've supported it and bought a copy of it myself if the remaster wasn't so poorly done.
Now here's the big point you mentioned: Sonic Lost World. I understand that the game has its fans, including yourself, and I'll never dunk on you for that. But you need to understand where many people, such as myself, were coming from in regards to the negativity surrounding that game. Sonic The Hedgehog was so cool to me because he created trends. He followed his own rules and became a powerhouse of a franchise by doing his own thing and being a unique platformer, that frankly no other franchise could even COMPARE to even today. Sonic was cool because he was Sonic. He had his own vibe, and his own way of providing fun game design. Games like Sonic Colors, and *especially* Sonic Lost World, were made during the times SEGA was ashamed of their own legacy they created with 3D Sonic games up to that point. They no longer were confident using their own formula, that they've been using since 1998, for 3D Sonic game design. Thus, they thought the best idea to win back the favor of fans(moreso Western gaming journalists) was to have Sonic act a lot more like Mario. You can see that through the designs and aesthetics if all the stages in Sonic Lost World. I love Mario. Always did for as long as I can remember. But Sonic The Hedgehog is not Mario. I don't love Sonic because his games felt similar to Mario, I loved Sonic because his games *weren't* like Mario. And thats the key point here as to why a lot of people were not fans of the 2010s era of Sonic. It felt like SEGA had no idea what they wanted Sonic to be, due to themselves being ashamed of their legacy with 3D Sonic games of the past, and were just following trends set by completely different franchises. The exact *opposite* direction that Sonic was in decades prior. I hope this puts into better perspective of why I feel the way I feel!
Anyways, thank you so much for watching and taking the time to respond!

@@Jman88933 hey no problem man and yeah I get it like I said I did grow to like all eras of sonic I just found myself preferring the 2010’s because to me it felt more like the sonic I was exposed too
Also I’m a 2002 kid so I’m not much younger then you I just didn’t get into sonic until way later
The last thing I’ll respond too is that the reason I initially felt so disconnected with sonic from 1998-2009 is because it felt like the series was trend chasing, in the late 90’s multiple gameplay styles were popular so they had the adventure games have multiple play styles, shooting games were big in the mid 2000’s let’s have a sonic game with firearms, the Xbox 360 had games trying to look realistic let’s make the 15th anniversary game look realistic and lastly god of war clones were popular in the late 2000’s let’s add that into unleashed
To me the 2010’s just felt like the series wasn’t trying to jump on popular trends anymore and instead was trying to be the series it was when it started out
Also while I agree lost world kinda looked like Mario gameplay wise it was actually looking pretty close to watch sonic x-treme was looking like but I do agree the result does bare a resemblance to Mario galaxy
As for lost world’s plot I honestly think that game was the closest the decade got to a story from the 2000’s, the stakes were high, characters did die, Eggman got overthrown and needed to team up with sonic, all it was missing was a super sonic final boss fight and a rock inspired vocal theme
My point is lost world to me is very overlooked by 2000’s sonic fans even tho I felt it was very similar to the 2000’s games in everything except artstyle even the tone is like unleashed which is where humor started being inserted into sonic games

this decade really made me sit down and think about everything that's happened recently, and it made me realize what's been missing about the 2010s:
    Sonic is finally cool again.
Frontiers' boss fights, the return of the metal soundtracks, final horizon and dream team bringing back both multiple playable characters AND super forms, the promo animations showing proper characterization and lore, the movies, IDW, Prime's animation, and now Sonic x Shadow Generations
It's all unapologetically Sonic, and that's all we've been asking for

As much as I appreciate Ian Flynn with how he handles the comics and the story of Frontiers, I feel that I'll truly never like Sonic as much as I used to as a kid, unless Shiro Maekawa is writing the stories of the games again.

@@Jman88933 You're welcome! I enjoyed this video. I grew up bullied for being a Sonic fan, I'd always draw Sonic in school instead of classwork, I'd walk around school with people shouting at me "SONIC SUCKS" and it didn't compute to me how such a cool guy like Sonic could be bad, and I'd always go home and play Sonic because the world of Sonic was my safe space where I could be happy and this was before social media bullied me for loving Sonic. Sonic taught me to never let others get to me no matter the pressure and I loved Sonic no matter what people said, I formed my own opinions and not blindly listened to bandwagon hate. I even introduced friends to hated Sonic games who have never played it and they enjoyed it, proving the bandwagon haters wrong. I thank you for this video cause this is nearly how I feel as a sonic fan and still am to this day. Also was a 2000s kid, so I heavily relate the experience. Going through the 2010s was downright miserable to see sonic like this. Many times where I knew it was over like sonic's new voice in colors (roger still an amazing va), lost world's new playstyle after generations, the unfortunate of sonic boom, and what really did for me was the moment classic sonic shown up at the forces trailer. Now it's such a confusing time as a fan. Froniters is like a C tier sonic game imo, new medias like the movies are good, but still aren't favorable to me, we're still going back to nostalgia based games like shadow x sonic, but I would still look into it, and superstars honestly I highly appreciate it but it isn't really progressing the series imo. I think what sonic needs is something like Frontiers where it feels like it matters and the game takes itself seriously to be a worthy contender, but it still isn't ideal since the game honestly needed more time in the oven. I still like sonic, but this series is still not making me care enough. I'd still look into the current sonic stuff, but sonic 1991-2009 is gone. Which that bit of myself is now only a memory.

I think i just found myself another underrated channel. This was a great retrospective on your take for the series because i got into it around 2006 as well. My first Sonic game was Sonic Advance on the GBA and like you I really love the cast of characters and world building of thr franchise and i always wanted to see what new adventures these cast of characters would go on. Like you i was obsessed with Sonic stuff on the Internet but i wasn't aware about all the stuff the series got from 2006-2009. I still love Colors and Generations and I'm glad I got to play those but something did feel off about the direction Sonic was going. I even got a Wii U just to play Lost World and it felt pretty meh to me and Yea i was excited about Sonic Boom thinking it would be a cool new spin off series. 2015 is where i just had to step away from the franchise. I also got into jrpgs at the time to and yea i would go back to play the games i would love like Unleashed and Adventure 1&2 but it really sucked that Sonic was a joke throughout the gap between Lost World and Forces. But with Frontiers and Sonic X Shadow Generations i feel like we are in a better direction than how the franchise was in the 2010s where Sega was having a identity crisis with the franchises and just doing whatever to their mascot and critics being extremely unfair or having over exaggerating thoughts on the franchise. To see people be excited that Kingdom Valley and Shadow having doom powers makes me very happy. And great video man 😊

Outside of Shadow (Because parents wouldn't let me play it because guns) and Gems (Not in US for PS2, but did release in the US on GameCube), I got all the Sonic PS2 releases at the time. Asked my parents for a Wii to play Sonic Colors, Secret Rings and Black Knight (Along with games like Smash Brawl, Lego Star Wars III, Lego Indiana Jones 2 and Mario Galaxy) then found out the Wii model I had at the time can play GameCube games so I got both Adventure games and Gems as well.
I enjoyed so many Sonic games. Even games like Forces and 06. Only Sonic games I didn't enjoyed are 3D Blast, all three Boom games and Free Riders.

It's both wild and funny how fans born in the same era of a game series can have about the same opinion. Its not like an assembly line based on the year but I shared abt 90% of the opinions you had simply based on the fact that I got into Sonic around the same time you did. Glad you touched on the unspeakable feelings of the direction of the Sonic franchise from Frontiers>going on. I hate to make this overly long, and I know its a brief segment in the video, but I 100% agree with your take on Amy, she was always my favorite character, and the fandom missed the point of her character! Amy's current state is one of my biggest pet peeves with modern female characters. The sanitized female character who becomes a too perfect girlboss because people react to the extreme. I very much prefer a middle ground for the character, I feel like Murder of Sonic did her character so well that it baffles me it isn't the direction they took with her. I've always liked Amy and felt her hate was WAY too overexaggerated and people just looking too much into things based on either systemic views or emotional response. Amy in the modern day has basically become the generic female voice of reason trope, which is the most stale, overdone version of a female character in media. It was basically the ONLY trait female characters had in 70s, 80s and 90s media (especially in regard to early Superhero or video game genre when they weren't filling the damsel in distress role. It was also what defined the girl of the group in sitcoms, where the girl out of a group of wacky guys only served to be a boring sterilized female character whose main train other than being a girl is being kind, when she isn't just being another girlboss.) yet these were kinds of female characters critics complained about, but somehow its seen as acceptable for Amy due to specific views on her older character. See how female characters are always in a double standard? (yet these same people always rant about gender specifics with DS in their rants that most of the time come off as vent sessions about systemic issues that often times isn't what the dynamic is displaying at all) But how is this any less "one dimensional" than her old persona like people say it is, it's literally having less bones in character than previously because she's just a generic female but lacks any flaws, dynamics or rough edges. The ONLY difference is they prefer that version and then say she isn't like that. And it's ironic too, because the detractors who like Amy's modern persona you almost never see them define what her personality actually is, they just compare that she isn't like she was before, then say she has character. Which is NOT making the case for a more dynamic character, you're just complaining who she was before. And when reasons are given, they don't amount to anything more complex than her previous person, they just took away her liking Sonic.
Because these are the same people who would criticize female characters like Amy's modern portrayal, but because she fits the character they want her to be like, especially when you consider for years that she was hated nobody ever offered any discussion on how to improve her character, they just complained about her existence, while exaggerating everything she did, with no substance how to improve her. Now because she fits how THEY want her to be she's good, when if you were to have a female character like Modern Amy, she'd be criticized for being a generic female voice of reason/girlboss. I also don't consider her new character "development" when there wasn't any reason development that happened, they just changed her character's motive from before. (especially with the bio change in SXS Generations, lending more credence to this) I also defend the notion that Amy wasn't a stalker in most of her appearances in the 90s or 2000s, it's literally just the worst-case scenario label they throw out just because of how extreme she could be, but honestly if you analyze her in the games. Sonic is a guy who is known to always be on a run, he never likes to be in one place and always goes whenever, Amy was always portrayed as someone with her own life who just happened to be fantasizing about Sonic in moments, we see her because it was always implied it had been sometime since their last excursion. With Sonic always being on the run, it would make sense that the only way Amy could make her move would be to chase him down, it's just that her extreme advances were something Sonic either had no time for or were too aggressive. And her chasing Sonic down did have positive effects on her character.
Not only that, I think people really use surface level lens to judge the element of "immaturity" all they did was change how she expresses her feelings to Sonic. She's also a 12-year-old girl, do people think kids aren't extreme with their emotions? That they all should be straight laced and sanitized? Amy's idea of love is just an immature way of thinking because well that's who she was! When it comes to Sonic Heroes, this is the most overcriticzed version of Amy. And is the one where people are really taking the context of her WAY to seriously. It was established from the beginning cutscene Amy has her own life, she's chilling on a beachside with Cream and Big wondering the whereabouts of their missing friends, she is even having friendly conversations with them. Amy fantasizes about Sonic, but that's a normal thing to do when you haven't seen someone in a while, the paper just happens to remind her of Sonic because he was on the paper. The Newpaper saw Sonic with their missing friends, by this logic Team Rose have a motive to all be going after Sonic. With Amy, sure there is a bonus in that she gets to find him personally, but that also means even in spite of that she has a motive to find Sonic that ties with her. I also find that scene vs Team Sonic to be taken WAY to literally, the implication has NOTHING to do with abuse its just something people inject into the scene, which is actually translated differently in Jap version. It's just an excuse to start the boss fight. I also don't see what's so wrong with that because it isn't like she just ditches her friends upon encountering Team Sonic the first time, during the boss fight AMY is the one who asks Team Sonic about their missing friends, with Team Sonic honestly being flippant and dismissive of it. There is nothing wrong with Amy's advances being treated as a flaw in their pursuit because it isn't coming to anybody's detriment. In fact, after they fight Team Sonic, the goal becomes to find Eggman and Amy is the one who encourages her team to keep going. She only leaves after her friends had their happy ending and Cream points out Sonic TO her.
And if she does still like Sonic, the games don't do a good job showing it, but if you want to use the excuse "she moved on" then that should be something the writing clears up, not an opened ended thing where you're constantly left asking "does like him, does she not like him" It's just bad writing otherwise. Because nowadays, she doesn't have any flaws whatsoever and doesn't play off of Sonic in any interesting way. There isn't a dynamic with them anymore and her new role just amounts to "Sonic's friend who is a girl" whereas given Amy's previous wild card persona you can just fit her into the story to do whatever. Hell in Sonic Dream Team her personality is literally just "female Sonic" yet her classic design is criticized for being Sonic but girl. LOL Hypocritical much?

Don't worry about long responses man, I'm just happy that at just the idea of people having a lot to say about the things I discuss in my videos! :D
I'm glad what I said about Amy resonated with you, as we're totally on the same page about her. The thing with Amy is that many people within the Sonic fandom has this perception of Amy that they want the character to be, and if Amy doesn't reflect that, its instantly a negative on her part. If you've watched the full video, this goes back to where I said "SEGA needs to listen *carefully* to their consumers" because the fact that many critics see Amy's psychotic love for Sonic as something she needs to "mature out of" or "respect Sonic's space" tells me they completely missed the point of the character. Because its exactly as you said, she's 12 years old and her behavior towards Sonic with her emotions is intentionally supposed to be exaggerated to showcase to the audience, playing these games, that you're NOT supposed to go this far if you have feelings for someone. And the crazier part is that so many people fall into this misconception that Amy's love for Sonic is all there is to her character. Which couldn't be further from the truth as I explained through the segment about Amy.
Amy is one of the many things that goes into why Frontiers just didn't really do much for me in the end as a game or narrative. But what I hope will happen is that Ian Flynn hears some of the criticism the fans have about Amy and take that under consideration when writing her in the future, or best case scenario, SEGA calls up Shiro Maekawa to come back and assist with the story writing of these games again.
Either way, thank you so much for watching, dude!

"If sonic friends are STUPiD, why people like shadow arc from sa2 and get emotional at the ending"
Because you were 5 year old and didn't know any better.
Nostalgia is a fine reason to like a game, but claiming ALL the fans find that story good is a pretfy bald claim, especially when even in the 2000s there were a lot of fan doing the same criticisms of the game journos (although less mean spirited....or at least sone were less mean)

    • @Jman88933
      @Jman88933  2 месяца назад +1

Okay. Lets break all this down!
First thing is a question I have to you: What does nostalgia have to do with millions of fans, including myself, appreciating a well written story and character arc? There were a lot of 5 year olds watching shows such as Dragon Ball Z and Naruto back in the day, shows that not only had well written stories and characters arcs, but were also technically targeted for teenagers.
Yes, I'm sure there were a sizeable group of people that weren't fans of Shadow as character or Adventure 2 in general. However what I said can hardly even be labeled as "bold". After Sonic Adventure 2 released, Shadow's debut game, he became one of, if not, the most popular character in the franchise of that specific time period in the early 2000s. In fact, that was one of the driving forces on why SEGA gave Shadow his own game, since the company put up a popularity character poll online, and Shadow was #1. You can read about that and the development of Shadow The Hedgehog here: info.sonicretro.org/Shadow_the_Hedgehog_(game)/Development
So if the MAJORITY of fans loved Shadow's character enough to spread the message to SEGA that they want to see him return in future games, despite SEGA initially wanting to keep him dead after Adventure 2, wouldn't that imply that Shadow's story was well received by the majority of people that played the game?
I also don't doubt there was a lot of criticism to Adventure 2 from a certain section of fans as well. However, you can say that about most franchises, when they try something different. Not everyone was on board with Super Mario Sunshine. Not everyone was on board with Jak 2. Not everyone was on board with Mega Man Legends. You get where I'm going with this? The point is that despite any backlash the franchise got, 3D Sonic games from 1998 all the way to 2003 got mostly positive feedback from fans. I hope I made things a little clearer!
