@@camerondavis800 you know what, I might have to take you up on that one. Because let's be real, there is nothing really real about Monster Hunter LOL.
My SINGLE complaint is that Rey is very, very monochrome. It could use a little bit more color variation, or even just more shades of yellow. I do think you missed a bit on the originality, it is still a flying wyvern at the end of the day, with some lightning additions and extra horns. I'd say its closer to an 8 for originality. Still love the design though.
I find it interesting that the blue on its body is not naturally there, but as it fights the electricity causes the sand to burn and melt onto its body due to the extreme heat generated. It’s these kinds of details that makes me love this series more and more.
@@RathalosWatch He does on his neck but on his wings I think it's the sand turning into glass from when he super heats the sand it gets stuck on his wings

Tzitzi's mirros are cool, but alas you never see them used because you have to A: Hunt Tzitzi Ya-Ku, and B: NOT have broken its head by the time it limps back to its lair.
There were like 5-6 other monsters with advantages due to their lair if I remember. Most being elder dragons and Akantor. Also I’d have given it a 9 ngl
In my opinion, it will be the best thunder element monster of all time (surpassing Zinogre and Lagiacrus) and probably one of the best monsters in general.
Uragaan’s rolling tunnel, Nergigante’s destruction of the crystal wall, Odogaron’s wall bounding, Raging Brachydios’s final stand, Diablos’s sand waterfall, Kecha Wacha’s hanging moveset, Radobaan’s rearmoring, Lavasioth’s lava jumping, Tobi Kadachi’s tree cling charging, and possibly Zamtrios’s ice swimming (though I believe he can do this everywhere)
The first time i see this monster i think he was going to be the elder dragon or the face of wilds, he also have a great tiger palette with gold so my bet is that this monster will fight for the top 20 fav monsters in all the franchise, this is already top 5 in wild roster in my list Great vid and hope see this and so many more monsters, and i think tecnically in mh3 fighting the monster underwater was the "have advantage here" and in also 3 aknagtor drilling the floor and high part of the cave and uraggan special place to roll can count too
So World had a lot of small lair moves. A few that come to mind, Uragaan can do special wall rides in his lair, and lavasioth has puddles he could dive in and jump through. Teostra and Lunastra can activate lava in their lair, and Nergi has the walls he can destroy and to obscure vision for his jumps. I don’t know if this can be considered since his route is set and he’s basically a boss monster but Raging Brachy morphs his entire lair into a nuclear testing site. It was something I loved about elders recess and the monsters in that locale. Really felt like they owned the place and you were stepping on their turf. I wish iceborne did more with it but I’ll take what we got.
I think you should add in a "themes" category, I'm also still a bit confused by what the fantasy category even means. Let's also face it, Rey is not a 10 in colors, yes, he has nice colors, cool wingpatterns, but nowhere close to 10, I think you judge them too softly. I do think most of it is our good old friend recency bias bumping it up a notch or two. I do really love Rey to tbh, but objectively, it's not a perfect design. The theme is also amazing, I managed to find one without sfx and it is sick
Fantasy is exactly what it says, the fantasy that Capcom is trying to sell you on when fighting that monster. As for themes category, that wouldn't make sense here because this is a visual design rating so it has 0 relation to music. But yes, his theme is great.

The most exciting part is that it isn't even the flagship of MH Wilds and there are more apex monsters probably on same level/uniqueness depending on number of locals/regions.
If there really are other apex predators then I hope that there is variety in species among them. Meaning one is brute wyvern, fanged wyvern, flying wyvern (rey dau), leviathan etc.
Barioth has short snout and ears as an adaptation to deal with the cold, while Rey Dau's face is likely shaped that way to accommodate the firing antennas.
That metal griding wing flapping he does is Craaaazy. As for the lair thing, Tzi-tiz yaku was perhaps not the first monster to have a lair advantage but hes the first that comes to mind. Gonna be fair and perhaps controversial. But I really don't like this design. It feels a bit generic and less based in "realism" which they always want to go for. A bit like zinogre and magnamalo. They use a lot of real life elements but use them wrongly eg this should be a predator however it has a lot of spikes (too many) which are in real life almost only used by prey animals. @@ender_z4nd3r83 Yes obviously at the end of the day Monster Hunter, it is a fantasy game, but a lot of the monsters are inspired by real animals and have certain features that are more believable than in other games. I think you are taking the point to literal. The designs in Rise as an example are far more fantastical. Meanwhile, traditional mainline entries are more rooted in more realistic and believable visual designs. Anajanth is one great example of a grounded monster, Doshaguma is another. Then you have someone like Valstrax or Magnamalo who are way extreme fantasy.
I want to like it more but... eh, at the end of the day, Rey Dau is just electric sand Rathalos. I was hoping the electric wyvern in trailer got more outlandish face like Khezu or something, so to find the electric wyvern got typical flying wyvern stuffs just making it 6.5-7/10 for me. Okay, the unique ecological interaction of its lightning making glass from the sand bumps it 7.5/10 for being "realistic" to Monster Hunter ecology unlike basically magic yokai dog Magnamalo. God I hate Magnamalo for that, he doesn't belong to MH but God Eater or Nioh. Eh, as long as as it's gunlance is cool and powerful Idc much. I'm more interested in more bizarre but uniquely immersive monsters like Bala Larina or Namielle from World.
@@RathalosWatch well, we each have our preference and just because I'd rather be fighting Astalos won't stop me from committing Rey Dau genocide when the game comes out...
@@cro-magnoncarol4017 To be 100% honest I never really liked Diablos and never found him that interesting. More annoying than anything with his constant burrowing, especially in the much older games. He was rendered practically useless if you just brought 10 Sonic Bombs with you + additional crafting materials so you can craft more in case you ran out, since you could only carry 10 maximum in inventory.
@@RathalosWatch I've heard some suggestions in the MH community on instead of Diablos returning in 6th gen for Monoblos to return instead. Monoblos was actually the original "King of the Desert" in 1st gen, but has been in the shadow of Diablos ever since 2nd gen. Coupled with the fact Monoblos didn't return in 5th gen & being the original desert king I think Monoblos would be cool to see again.
@@cro-magnoncarol4017 I dunno man, I rather fight Diablos instead of Monoblos and I find them also to be way too similar to one another. @@RathalosWatch I'm talking about the Volcanic zone in Monster Hunter World. There was a spot at the top where Kushala goes to sleep that lets him summon like 5 tornados at once.
For me at least, rey dau is my least favorite monster shown so far. I think that they should’ve made rey either a gliding monster or completely flightless, because it doesn’t look very capable of flight imo. It also looks a little generic to me, but that’s more subjective I suppose. I do like the idea of rey dau, however. An electric monster reliant on the weather (in this case, naturally occurring electricity from sandstorms) is a more interesting approach to an electric monster imo. Side note: I’d say for ranking monster design, I personally use the term “grounded” along with or in replacement of “realistic.” Monster Hunter is fairly far from a realistic series, if it was trying to, it would probably be more like Red Dead Redemption, basically emulating real life as close as possible. “Grounded” meanwhile (and I’ll use Unnatural History Channel’s definition here that was used for one of his monster design videos), is a loose term where something takes aspects of our reality to try and convince you that it’s real. For example, narwa and ibushi aren’t very realistic monsters, but they are grounded in that they treat any dimension that isn’t the sky like how a whale treats the land, it’s alien and dangerous to them. Anjanath breathes fire, which isn’t realistic, but has many features meant to regulate its body and to claim and defend territory. The point of monster hunter isn’t to make something hyper realistic, but making a creature that is constrained to similar laws of reality to ours. And while they don’t always succeed in this, they are consistent with it. It is this more naturalistic approach that does separate monster hunter from many other franchises.
@jafartext8229 I can understand your opinion in regards to Rey Dau and respect. Also, thanks for brining up the whole grounded thing. That's a solid write and an explanation. Truth be told, I've been struggling here trying to figure out how to talk or rank something that's not really real to begin with.
@fz_dracohart1255 yeah Magnamelo is a space demon samurai dog lol
looks like Seregios, fights like Astalos. I much prefer the design of Astalos, Rey Dau is a bit plain looking for me...
See for me its the complete opposite, Astalos is way too busy for me with his design and too flashy. Much prefer Rey Dau's design personally.
@@RathalosWatch well, we each have our preference and just because I'd rather be fighting Astalos won't stop me from committing Rey Dau genocide when the game comes out...
@@ShadowEpoch true that!
To be fair, canonically Diablos is a herbivore thus not a predator. So it makes sense it would not be considered an apex-predator.
But he was an Apex Predator in World though?
@@RathalosWatch Yeah, Capcom has some weird thing on calling all powerful monsters "Predators" to makes them sound more cool...
They should just either have a Monoblos or a Diablos but not both as that would waste a monster roster slot. Also, speaking of communities have you had the chance yet to join ours? We are quite new but very passionate about MH Wilds and would love to have you! Here is the link - discord.gg/FjnRMFxj
Honestly his dessign in term of realism is the same as astalos, doesn't make any sense. His head is also very weird
Its a Pawmi
@@happyperson2944 what's a pawni?
Pawmi is a Pokémon that's electric type @RathalosWatch
@@happyperson2944 got yam sorry I don't follow pokemon so I wouldn't know
1:36 Railguns don't shoot lightning, they use electromagnetics to launch a projectile. Rey Dau is nothing like a railgun.
@@Ryker_11 I think I meant it more as an expression rather than the actual science behind.
But in the media you often see rail guns depicted as shooting giant beams of energy. It may not be the realistic depiction of a railgun but it's definitely meant to represent one.
3:32 Elder's Recess Kushala 🤢
Where? That's just a bunch of ruins in a desert.
@@RathalosWatch I'm talking about the Volcanic zone in Monster Hunter World. There was a spot at the top where Kushala goes to sleep that lets him summon like 5 tornados at once.
@@definetlyme6120 ahh I see. Speaking of Kushala, I think she'd work very well in Wilds with the whole weather thing.

I think using the word "Grounded" is much better than "Realism" I will switch it up moving forward. Thank you so much for this friend. Btw you should join our Discord and hang out with our community. I don't dislike it but I don't love it. it's a Rathian/Rathalos but a lightning shooting drake. But his music though 10/10 easily ^^
@Builimacen that's a very fair assement and I can understand where you are coming from. Yeah, his music is astounding! 🥰 btw are you new here or a returning viewer ?
