I worked on an offshore fishing boat for 17 years out of New Bedford Massachusetts and the biggest lesson I ever learned from working on Deck and it happened when I first started fishing. ATTITUDE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE!!!!!!....
The Wild Bill / Zach situation hits way too close to home for me.. This is so eerily similar to the relationship I have with my dad, it actually blows my mind.. watching their interaction as a third party was pretty eye opening for me. I totally understand where Zach is coming from. He wants so badly to be able to learn from his dad and more importantly have that ideal father / son type of bond, but time and time again Wild Bill breaks his son's heart and spirit. Deep down it's obvious Wild Bill does indeed love Zach and want the best for him, but he's totally burned the bridge. At a certain point there's just no coming back from it. And as heartbreaking as it is for both sides, it's not something that can be fixed anymore. There's still love but there's no potential for a meaningful relationship. I'm literally crying typing this. I see it all over Zach's face, all he wants is his dad to be proud of him.. but he knows deep down he never will be. The "you are your mother's son" line was the final blow. Wild Bill is completely unable to understand how he has broken his son's heart, he genuinely feels like Zach has no reason to feel hurt.. which makes the pain Zach feels even worse. Wild Bill tried to muster up a half-hearted apology but he can't stop himself from essentially calling his son soft. He just can't wrap his head around the fact that Zach is not able to let it go. He would if he could.
It seems like there's a lot of us that this hits close to... Same situation again but my dad just got diagnosed with stage 4. Talk about mixed feelings.
Maybe his son is a bit soft? And if he wants to captain of the boat one day? He needs to be more than competent on deck! Maybe off camera and at home, Bill is a better father and their relationship less shamed
You're not wrong.. usually the truth is somewhere in the middle.. of course it's difficult to be able to pin down the family's real dynamics based on footage from a reality TV show, but I think it's fair to say Wild Bill has deeply affected Zack in a negative way. And it's plain to see at least for anyone in a similar situation with their own father. @@mattysykes2121
I know I don’t know your personal situation with your dad, but I will say There is always hope. Forgiveness is a big part of it. Even if the other person isn’t worthy of it. ❤ we can’t choose our parents but we can choose to be the better and bigger person. Even though the parent usually should take that role.
Sometimes fathers want their sons to follow in their footsteps so bad they forget that they are their own person and sometimes they don’t want to follow the same path. It’s difficult for fathers to understand and support your children even if they don’t want to do what you want them to do with their life. It’s their life to live.
After having seen Jake Anderson struggling and grinding on the deck of the Northeastern and Sig giving him help and sharing his experience with Jake to push him into the wheelhouse, that makes me really proud to see him behind the controls of his own boat. @@mendoblendo321 Absolutely. I liked him at first, but seeing what he was doing later on and how he took advantage of everyone's trust I despised him. You're absolutely right, he needed to go.
That “you are your mothers child” hurts. My mom said this to me about my dad, who tried to kill me, and right after that I attempted to take my own life. I can’t stand parents that each other more than they love their kids.
Tough breaks lead to tough people. I hope you're able to talk to someone about this kind of stuff. I have had professional help for many years and am currently studying to become a counsellor myself. Everyone should have access to it. Good luck brother.

He was so right to stop working for his father and b a deck boss w a young captain. I think the millennial guys going their own way makes sense and it’s good to see them successful.
“You’re your mother’s son.” as if that is a bad thing. The mother must be a wonderful lady to have put up with Bill and produced such a seemingly sweet young man. Bill treats his son like crap. That apology was NOT an apology.
Not to mention the gaslighting like when Bill say "I'm sorry I failed you as a father" like man that's just him trying to guilt trip Zack for Christ sake!
“You’re your mothers son” from a guy who couldnt stand to be with that person anymore is a crazy thing to say to your child with that person. Basically saying I cant stand you as much as I couldnt stand her. In that type of conversation thats just a straight bridge burning. No coming back from that because he CLEARLY meant it when he said it.
The irony is this Bill guy was totally clueless. For an older man he sure was immature. I’ve met guys with his “leadership” style in the Army. They’re usually older and have a very narrow way of leading. You’re supposed to motivate whoever you’re mentoring not break them down and then call them soft.
Watching this makes me miss and realize how much i didn't appreciate my dad while he was here. He loved me more than anyone else and i took it as him being mean. Appreciate your people while theyre here.
You gotta tell em you love them dad. You're still the father, and the much older, wiser, more understanding less needing guidance one in it. Just remember that and that too will build character in them when you show this. True power is having all of the power yet choosing to give it back to those that do not...
My dad is kinda similar to bill. He’d get frustrated I didn’t pick things up as fast as he expected and end up calling me stupid. lol I’m a 36 year old Man now and those memories still hurt. My parents have always provided for us but it’s kinda sad none of us siblings have ever heard I love you or I’m proud of you. I don’t have kids yet but I make sure to tell my nephews I love them and I do it often.
Actually, it's not hard at all. You just have to want to. Bill doesn't want to. It's really that simple. He cares more about his own ego than he does about wanting to break that cycle. He cares more about his ego than he cares about his son.
@@rkr7372 Zack lived with his mother when he was growing up, cus Bill was always away fishing. And when they split up i think bill wasnt very nice to either one of them, cus thats the person he is.

I would let my son go after the next port unload.Give his son a FAT CHECK ,get a big hug, tell him you love him and wish him the best. He is 31 a lot of living to do.
It’s a pretty easy cycle to break. Bill wants what’s best for Zack as long as Zack becomes a clone of Bill. That’s not being a father, that’s shaping your son for you to live through vicariously. Bill has a massive ego, and that’s more important to him than anything.
Yup, and it has to be especially hurtful to his son because Bill uses it as an excuse AND an insult. “We aren’t estranged because I failed you emotionally … it’s because of how you are deep down - spiteful and hard to connect with, like your mom”
There's some deep hatred between Bill and Zack, hopefully they're on better terms these days, I haven't watched the show in a few years. Life's too short for a father and son to fued like this.
Is it much wonder, his diickhead father treats him as though he's a failure. He never has a single word of encouragement for him. My Dad never told me once in my life that he was proud of me, he never had to, his actions spoke much louder then his words ever could. A regret I shall carry forever is never taking the time to say thank you. Unfortunately that opportunity has past forever.
Cause he knows there's no room for him on that boat. Wild bill only allows things to happen his own way and if Zach doesn't do it bills way, with bills attitude at bills time then Zach get beat down. He's not teaching Zach what he knows and what to look for, he's tryign to make Zach a replica of jimself and Zach probably hates him so that won't happen, Zach needs to just move on to another boat if he wants that to be his profession.
It's hard to get, but Bill is scared! My dad was just like Bill, and I resented him for it. I'm coming up on a year since he passed and over the last 11 months I've now realize my father was pushing hard because he knew he wasn't going to be around forever and worried about me and the family after he was gone! Regarding Bill and Zack: My dad worked law enforcement for 44 years. He worked 60 to 80 hours a week, so I didn't get to spend every day with him. Partly my fault as well. But he always made sure we were taken care of and did everything for us. He was a great dad. We did get to spend a good amount of time together throughout life, though. But the times he missed with us, he told me that he regretted working so much before he passed away at the age of 64. But he never talked down to us. He did tell us to get thicker skin and not take things to heart and to turn the other cheek. I feel for Zack. I would be crushed if my dad talked to me the way that Bill did to him. Tough love is fine, but to have an ego so insanely out of this world like Bill is a whole other thing.
As an ex merchant navy captain, I can relate to the situation. NOt being there all the time as well, but what can you do when you're out working hard. And I lost my dad when I was 19, so what I would say is you only have one mum and dad pls show them respect.

I’ve been in the same situations as the captains you don’t see everything on the show when it comes to workers with attitudes that don’t change with a simple calm conversation, because some people take a bosses calm reasoning as weakness regardless of how many warnings. That’s when you either let a crew run over you and let them do as they please or you make sure the problem is solved and one man can destroy a whole crews attitude so if it is necessary the argument and the problem needs to be resolved where everybody drops anything started negatively by one employee.
Yeah I see that all the time on the rigs (oilfield) especially in today's day and age. The kids now, you can tell we're raised mainly by women and they have no control of their emotions. Women are vindictive and all talk talk talk. I had a rig crew that tried to get me fired because I didn't "pay them" when I pulled out my ticket the consultant had signed and showed our billed hours that ended really quickly. Lol one of the hands that initiated all of that was in the passenger seat and when I pulled out my ticket book and slapped it down in front of the manager and asked him how I didn't pay them he just put his head down cuz he knew he had lied and his whole story got shot tf to crap. Needless to say I didn't get fired, the oil company got involved and told my company that if they messed with me they'd release all the rigs we had out for them and get me hired with another company. Moral of the story, its hard being a boss and usually you're in that position for a reason and the hands can't run the show or nothing gets done or people start getting hurt
This is a bitter sweet story. Time with your children is precious. I know bills have to be paid. I understand as a single working mom how difficult it is to not have that luxury of time. My son is nearly 30. I am blessed that my son understood that bills had to be paid, but it never stopped the guild I felt leaving him with family and friends to be minded. For any young parents out there, I suggest that if you can jobshare or do part time work and afford to live, spend the time with your children. They grow up in the blink of an eye. Jake is in a very lucky position, most young people would kill for. I just hope that he realises it before he looses the opportunity to someone else.
Never give the captain attitude, he has given you a job, try your best, be respectful and remember the golden catch is just round the corner, when your tired don't forget everyone is tired, pull together as a team and remember to have each others back

Correct. 32 pots over the side without checking cotton means the captain wasn't paying attention to his crews habits either. It's wasn't just on brit. Also, not letting a man say his peace when you fire them means you will probably repeat a mistake.
The guy that woke up Jake did the right thing. You can’t be sleeping for 4 hours on the bridge floor not watching where the ships going. There could be a rouge wave another boat anything.

Crew members to certain captains are simply crew members.. nothing more, if you go.. they’ll just hire someone else.. it would be better to work as a crew.. cover each others back, if I’m working and see a colleague miss something or make a mistake… I’d offer my help where I can not simply get dragged for it
@@michaelslaughter6557 you clearly have never worked as a team and it shows. A bad captain is not needed.. but a good captain will not only make life easier and better on the crew.. but keeps the machine working and functioning how it should!
Wild Bill saying “sorry I let ya down as down as a dad”. Like saying that makes up for not being there for Zack ALL THE YEARS as a boy that he needed needed his dad. What Bill should have said to Zack was “I spent 10 months a year out here away from you and the rest of the family because I have no idea how to be a husband and a dad I was and I am a coward”. But in his smug deity he thinks he’s a man’s man.
As a father I can relate to Bill and his son Zach. I haven’t always done my best being a father. Even fathers make mistakes unintentionally too. Nobody is perfect. I think Bill honestly wants the best for his son Zach, but sometimes there’s just a difference in personalities. My son hasn’t spoken to me in over a month.
I moved out at 15. I didn't have a good relationship with my father for many years. I'm now 40 and since I was 25 we started to repair our relationship, now having a 16 year old and 12 year old I can understand how much he'll I put my parents through over the years.

That’s why the greenhorn hazing makes no sense unless they truly deserve it. That greenhorn in the brenna a made all those guys more money whilst simultaneously being harassed by a “veteran” who walked around and barely did his job. Seniority doesn’t mean a god damn thing. Angel Hernandez is a good example of being a “veteran” with “tenure” but absolutely sucking at a job.
Zack was only asking his father to speak to him with some respect and did so respectfully and instead of some introspection he proceeded to blame and shame his son! He’d rather crap on his son than take any responsibility for his actions! He alone torched any chance for a meaningful relationship with his son!
I’d call him out. Are you crying because I’m leaving or is it no problem because I’m a bad worker? The guilt trip crap doesn’t mean much when you know they’re lying
9:15 I respect the hell out of him for saying that. Edit: I still respect that the captain stood up for him. The warrant thing was the line and I respect the hell out of that as well.
i sympathize with captain bill and his son. he did what he thought was right by providing for his familly. even tho it meant he was away. just like people in the military...on the road truck drivers. it sucks. but maybe there wasnt many options for bill back in the day. i imagine its hard to be a close great father and be there for your kids and have a sucessful career. i assume it just wasnt an option for capt bill. i understand his sons perspective too. but hes also gotta realize his dad isnt getting any younger. better late then never. work through it. you dont know what you have til its gone. coming from a person who lost their dad at 16 years old. learn. and spend time with him while you still can .

💯 FACTS!!! But the reality is men today aren’t MEN. Guys all in the feelings, guys always hurting. My dad and uncles raised us to be MEN. Oh your leg hurts, take an aspirin and get back to work.
If somebody could explain when the one deckhand was talking with Jake about going back with the sporties and all that could someone explain I don't quite understand what he's talking about and why he's leaving
He runs his own boat and a different crab season was starting, I’d the deckhand didn’t leave right now to go home and start fishing for those crab, he would lose a lot of money. Deckhand staying on the boat with Jake and finishing out the season was not going to make him and his family nearly enough money then returning home to fish his own boat. That’s why it was so crucial the deckhand leave right then and there, the deckhand thought he would’ve been done before the other crab season started, to avoid any layoff in between. So ultimately it puts Jake in a huge bind since he’s down a guy on the boat, and he has to return to Dutch harbor to drop him off
@@alessandrofirmani700 naw he's using lol I'm 99% positive. I'm also pretty sure he's had previous drug problems so it's def not out of his known activities

I wondered, how do they get all those tracking shots and wide shots of the boats out in rough sea like you see at 55:53? Surely, there isn't another ship following each of the trawlers to capture that footage?
Wild Bill should have recognised that his son needed building up rather than the constant put downs, at the end of the day Bill said it himself "I don't understand", Zac was raised essentially by a single mother. This is why a stable family environment is key to a child's development.

@17:20 some fathers just can't handle honesty. Zac was being honest which is what Bill always asks for out of his crew. Working as a father and son in business is rough man
On hard labor jobs complaining is never listened to unless it’s from the guy who never complains. However, that never happens because he’s the guy who never complains. Weakness is a cancer that has to be cut out
I never understood why you would fire someone in front of a whole crew ...I'm a mechanic and if the manager fired me with everyone I worked with there I'd be a little upset
Because it's not just a firing. It's the whole I feel sorry for myself, forget everything and let me quit while I'm at it. A 9 to 5, fine. Out there, a lot more on the line - money, people's safety and picking up your own slack man!
Bc out there things are not private they live work eat sleep wash there clothes all together on them boats you spend that kinda time with ppl y’all all do things together and all gotta get along
I have to say I don't think that's the right way to do it either. I wouldn't be impressed I've never seen it go down that way. I've seen a lot of dudes get fired but never saw it. Let's sit around a table and tell the guy he's a pos. It would have been far more appropriate to say hey things aren't working out with you and all of us. You're performance isn't up to our standard and I disgust it with the crew and we're going to proceed on without you. Grab your things we have a flight for you to return home. But it's TV and and they gotta do that kinda trash
Boat captains are not the poster children for adequate management styles, best practices for hiring or the model for integrity themselves. It's funny pretending they are some sort of community leader. It's laughable
I think there's been to little communication between Zack and Bill. Bill is the captain AND his father so he has double 'authority' over Zack. If Bill is obedient to authority, he has to take giant leaps to become 'even' with Bill. If Bill told Zack from the beginning that he would like to train him as a captain, Bill would have a clear target and the 'authority' issue wouldn't be so big. You can almost switch 'authority' with respect; when you respect a person for what and who he is, sometimes it's difficult to change and overcome that feeling.

Seems like they both want the other person to be someone they aren't.
Eliot didn't have the temperament to command the Saga, so seeing Jake commanding his own boat is just really awesome. Proud of you bro!
Elliot was going to get someone killed, can't belive he was getting high like that while a camera crew was there. Glad he is gone.

That “you are your mothers child” hurts.
My mom said this to me about my dad, who tried to kill me, and right after that I attempted to take my own life. I can’t stand parents that each other more than they love their kids.
2-0 against death that’s called winning brother
I agree at the 2/0 comment. Your propose in life is important and I hope you fulfill it and the most successful way possible 😊
Yea, that "you are your mothers child" comment was really immature and intentionally hurtful by Bill
Well was she wrong? Yall both had the same idea
Tough breaks lead to tough people. I hope you're able to talk to someone about this kind of stuff. I have had professional help for many years and am currently studying to become a counsellor myself. Everyone should have access to it. Good luck brother.
1:06:00 I totally get it's the bait guys fault, but you are telling me none of the other guys noticed there was nothing in the pots before it went over? come on.
fr, like I feel as though that issue could have been resolved before it had any major impact.
" I'm going to take pieces of my dad, but I don't want to take the whole thing ". Now that!! Can't be anymore profound! 🎉❤
Someone probably thinks im reversing a truck in my room with all the bleeping 😂
Well said!
Cant wait for new season to start. I miss all the old captains from the early days
You gotta tell em you love them dad. You're still the father, and the much older, wiser, more understanding less needing guidance one in it. Just remember that and that too will build character in them when you show this. True power is having all of the power yet choosing to give it back to those that do not...
He has no idea how to be a father, that seems blatantly obvious
My dad is kinda similar to bill. He’d get frustrated I didn’t pick things up as fast as he expected and end up calling me stupid. lol I’m a 36 year old Man now and those memories still hurt. My parents have always provided for us but it’s kinda sad none of us siblings have ever heard I love you or I’m proud of you. I don’t have kids yet but I make sure to tell my nephews I love them and I do it often.
All Zack was looking for was a genuine apology. Im sure bills dad was real hard on him and thats all he ever knew. Hard to break that cycle.
Actually, it's not hard at all. You just have to want to. Bill doesn't want to. It's really that simple. He cares more about his own ego than he does about wanting to break that cycle. He cares more about his ego than he cares about his son.
@@biscaynediverfacts!! Bill cared more about a druggy than he did his own son!

1….. its never to late for a father and son to love each other.
2….Never,Ever work with family or friends.
3…the best thing bill could do is ask his son what does he want tin life.
17:54 ugh that’s hurtful
Basically saying “you’re just like the person I couldn’t stand to be with anymore”
Yup, and it has to be especially hurtful to his son because Bill uses it as an excuse AND an insult. “We aren’t estranged because I failed you emotionally … it’s because of how you are deep down - spiteful and hard to connect with, like your mom”
"When wild Bill said that he's here now" he's wrong. Zach went to him. Zach went to the boat to be next to you
There's some deep hatred between Bill and Zack, hopefully they're on better terms these days, I haven't watched the show in a few years. Life's too short for a father and son to fued like this.
such a great point.. well put..
Everytime I see Wild Bills son Zach, he always has a demeanor like hes minutes away from blowing his head off!
That’s a nice thought to put out into the world. Good for you.
He seems depressed to me for sure
Is it much wonder, his diickhead father treats him as though he's a failure. He never has a single word of encouragement for him. My Dad never told me once in my life that he was proud of me, he never had to, his actions spoke much louder then his words ever could. A regret I shall carry forever is never taking the time to say thank you. Unfortunately that opportunity has past forever.
@@ryanbesco8067so he can't say what his opinion on somebody is? That's just as ridiculous as this new age abc123 community. Pathetic.
I'd give anything for one more lesson from my father and one more hug even more!🤟🏻

Bill getting slapped when bringing up my mother like that lol worst dad award goes to
Im sayin. He was probably holding back some STRONG emotions after that line. I felt like smacking Bill and its not even my mom and dad being discussed lol
I can only imagine how bad his mother is for him to hate her that much to say that, he still shouldn’t have said it but I bet she was a real pain.
If they weren't there they aren't a real parent.

He has no business being a captain. Got there by sucking a$$ “can I do it again?”🥴
He has relaxed alot. I miss that first tyrant year😂
Lol imagine the crew had an HR member, they’d have to be paid more than everyone haha.
Yes you can't have a negative bad person around people 24/7 it rubs off on them and then no one can work together cuz they all got bad attitudes
Morale is crucial. Bad morale will destroy a crew in any line of work.
Bro said he was gonna need thicker skin to be captain, then immediately folded when his son had issues with him. Talk about needing thicker skin.
Usually, in my experience anyway, the people who brag about having thicker skin don’t actually have it.
Jake seems like a dead man walking. He looks so burnt out and stressed. He really needs to give up smoking!
Bill needs to give his son a huge hug and let the emotions out.
The amount of crew members that think the wheelhouse can’t hear what’s said on deck is alarming

Have you called your son?
Family is all ya got at the end of the day brother , give him a call , just talk about the good times .
As soon as Bill sees Zack as an independent person, and not an extension/ clone of him, then it will be better for everyone involved.
I moved out at 15. I didn't have a good relationship with my father for many years. I'm now 40 and since I was 25 we started to repair our relationship, now having a 16 year old and 12 year old I can understand how much he'll I put my parents through over the years.
lol youre probably just a bad dad. Why dont you just call him and make ammends? kids dont just decide to stop talking to their parents its usually years of bullshit until they just decide to give up on their parents.
I had Bill as a dad also, dad's like that have no idea how there actions impact there son
Bill wants Zach to be a captain because Bill wants him to become a captain, not necessarily because Zach wants to become a captain.
Tell your son you love him!
Zack was only asking his father to speak to him with some respect and did so respectfully and instead of some introspection he proceeded to blame and shame his son! He’d rather crap on his son than take any responsibility for his actions! He alone torched any chance for a meaningful relationship with his son!

Surely, there isn't another ship following each of the trawlers to capture that footage?
The producers and camera guys use drones. They fly them above the ships, and out away from the ships to capture those images.
No drones. The producers have a boat too. That's where the media base is setup and where all production & camera crew sleep.
How is it fixed pay when you get paid on volume?
Hard work on the boat has is priceless or paying the price ❤.
Wild Bill should have recognised that his son needed building up rather than the constant put downs, at the end of the day Bill said it himself "I don't understand", Zac was raised essentially by a single mother. This is why a stable family environment is key to a child's development.

On hard labor jobs complaining is never listened to unless it’s from the guy who never complains. However, that never happens because he’s the guy who never complains. Weakness is a cancer that has to be cut out
Complaining is basically a hobby for people working on ships or fishing boats.
also the amount of people that dont understand the capain is king on a boat ,is astounding
Jake talking to Jamie sounds like he is trying so hard to gentle parent an annoying 10 year old and finally giving up
Bill is a piece of work. Total passive aggressive.
The saga captain always looks like his dying😂
If Jake keeps this up he's gonna blow a Heart-A-Stroke!!!
“I’m sorry I let you down as a dad.”
That hurts a father as much as a son
