Cultural & Historical video clearly explained of the Erawan four faces Buddha in Ratchaprasong intersection. Each time I arrived in Bangkok I ll go there thanks Erawan Image to be back, in BBK. I was aware of this place was infortunes long time ago because criminals were executed there. Thanks for sharing all the informations about this shrine.
Pat you keep surprising me every time. I have been to this place more than a dozen times, but I was completely unaware that this place has such a mysterious background with so many ghost stories related to Erawan shrine and the areas around it. This vlog is highly informative, well researched, (with precious old video footages) entertaining and a bit scary. Good job. You nailed it again.
Thank you for the kind words, it was definitely interesting to make and I was quite surprised myself. The old video footage was hard to find but it definitely fits well.
Wow I was at the shrine in 1987. In 2016 I was on the BTS looking down on the streets when I spotted the shrine for the first time since then. The location looked completely foreign to me. So many changes.
Thank you again BKK Pat, I was always wondering about this spot the many times I walked pass it, it's a wonderful city and you are by far the best of the BKK RUclipsr ! keep up the great work and I hope to meet you the next time I'm in BKK :-)
Thanks Daniel, this area is actually quite tranquil and still as it gets later, as I found out the other night. I also noticed that no homeless sleep anywhere near here either!
I alwaysremember being at this shrine on my first visit in 1979. The little temple dancers, about 10 years old and a man approached me, saying two of them were his sisters, and for 1000 baht I could have both for a night. Nice. I mean this sarcastically. I've never forgotten it.
Thanks for another informative video BKK Pat. Did not hear about the tragedy in 2015 and my condolences to those lost, injured and the country of Thailand. Funny that Hyatt properties are at spots close to these shrines. Think that there's one on the side of Hyatt Regency as well. I'm learning a lot about BKK before my trip next year. I'll probably stop by at Erawan shrine, but because of my personal superstitions, I won't take any photos there that I'll bring back home. I don't try to rationalize this, LOL.
Lived in Bkk 5 years and visited Erawan Shrine countless times to pray. Never knew its history. Loved your video. Sadly emigrated from Thailand in 2020. Visiting June July and would love to buy you a coffee.
The first hotel I ever stayed at in Bangkok was the Grand Hyatt Erawan, visited the shrine often. Just got my Thailand Pass, back the 4th of March. Great video!
Thanks Jeff, that's great news about the pass. I don't suppose the Grand Hyatt Erawan had any disturbances during construction like the old one, so maybe no things to go bump in the night.
Anthropologically speaking...well done ! Too many memorable lines of dialogue to repeat here in my laudatory comment. The customary mix of historical photographs and footage and contemporary footage is very compelling. Thanks, Man.

Interesting Documentation about the shrines. Sadly you havn't luck with the weather. It pours cats and dogs but you catch a nice lightning when you film the roaf next to centralWorld. Nice!
Mahalo for your stories, Bangkok has so much history and cultural areas each of which has amazing and often spiritual backstories to them. I have a condo in On Nut, although we mainly live in the countryside, my wife and her family stayed at the condo and was determined to visit Wat Mahabut. The area around On Nut is not really touristy and the temple has a interesting ghostly foundation.
Thanks a lot, this was an eye opener to make because the actual full story is quite complicated and I kept it simple really. On Nut I plan to do a video on soon, and I know about the ghost story at the temple there!
@@BangkokPat I always wondered what that very large bowl like structure behind the water works in On Nut was, thought that it may be a water tower but not really sure.
I sat at one of the bench watching those two shrines and the Erawan from one of those skywalk bridge in 2019 wondering if those spirit houses and shrines do really protect whatever it was to protect. One things for sure I did enjoyed walking around CentralWorld though the place was huge and loved the Ratchaprasong road. Went inside the Amarin plaza and found the basement creepy and dark before leaving the place quickly. At the time I didn’t know about the history of the evil forces once there. Thanks for letting us viewers know.
Pat - Many thanks. I was mainly aware of the Erawan shrine since I often stayed at the Hyatt Erawan during business trips starting around 1997. I noticed the numerous other shrines in the Ratchaprasong area but didn't know their intended purpose. Somewhere in my files, I have an old video I took with a digital camera of Central Word still on fire. Seemed like the fire fighters were reluctant to tend to the fire due to the snipers that were still active shooters. Back then, I had some nice reddish colored tailor made shirts that I used to wear. With the snipers still occasionally shooting, it became "unlucky" to wear a red shirt on the street, especially around Ratchaprasong intersection. It took quite a few years for Central World and Big C to come back online after the fires. But sometimes, smoke and fire is supposed to bring good luck. I miss all the commotion and the clouds of smoke from the lighted incense at the Erawan Shrine. If they ever completely ban charcoal barbecues on the streets of Bangkok, I'll be really sad.
Fantastically well informed piece as always, Pat. I mean, who doesn't love stories of the supernatural? I'll remember the Erawan area next visit to Bangkok.
I remembered the shrine was a major tourist attraction. Busloads of tourists would arrive constantly from dusk until dawn. Many people swear that their prayers were answered by the deity.
Sure there are proofs. These are personal testimonials. Whether you accept them as proofs is up to your own interpretation. People had returned to make huge contributions because their wishes were fulfilled.
@mrslcom Then d world will have no poor or unhappy ppl. Every1 will b rushing there everyday fr all over just like a pilgrimage. Isn't there a price to pay for d proofs?
Hi Pat the back stories that surround the shrines are so interesting and fascinate me. They do say the past can come back to haunt you ….. thanks for another great vlog and now your doing these ghost stories remember who you gonna call !!!!! Not the ghostbusters 👻 but Pat buster for all you paranormal activity!!!!!!!!!
I remembered the Erawan Shrine became well known throughout SE Asia after that infamous offering dance by HK actress Deborah Lee. Please do a story on Mae Nak Phra Khanong. 😱👻
That clip of Simon Yam at Erawan at the beginning was actually the same trip with Deborah Lee but Simon Yam is more recognizable in Thailand so I edited her out.
That happened at least 2 decades before your clip. Back then, Simon was at best a struggling TV actor. I doubt there is any video clip out there when young Deborah did her own private dance with curtains surrounding the shrine. Newspaper clips maybe. 🙂
Once again you cast a spell on me with this great video and reminded me of the time when I lived very close by. You have a particularly beautiful view of the Erawan shrine from the top of the BTS Sky walk and when the dancers do their work and you can hear the traditional music, it's perfect. But most of the time I sat next door with a cappuccino, which I occasionally afforded in the far too expensive Starbucks, and enjoyed the vibrations of the Pleon Chit Road. At that time I only felt a hint of bad karma (2009) during the demonstrations in Rajaprarop and the following fire in Central World. I didn't dare to go out on the street and was really afraid for my family and myself. Otherwise, this area was always a very nice place for me to stroll and enjoy the atmosphere. Thanks to you, I've now expanded my background knowledge again, which I didn't have back then. However, I noticed one small thing about this video - no cats, 5555? Thank you Pat - great job. Greetings from Sattahip - Gerd 🌈🍀💖🌴🌈
Thanks Gerd for the story of your experience, there were no cats because, there are no cats around that area. Nearest ones I saw were right near Pratunam canal pier. They aren't that silly and they stay away from these places!
Thanks for creating this fantastic video. I visited the Erawan a few times when I lived in Thailand. The musicians and dancers give a very good expression of real Thai culture. The names and pictures of the 8 gods was well done. I've been hoping a video like this would be on RUclips. Looking forward to more ghost stories.
Thanks. This is interesting as always. Do let us know from time to time what plans you have to do some sort of adventures around BKK. I'd be interested in being a paying customer when I get the chance.
Awesome thank you so much! I was wondering about the shrines by the mall across the street from Big C. 👍👍👍👍👍 Keep them coming! The history videos, not the evil spirits...
Wow, that's close enough, I assume you heard and felt that. I was by Major Ratchayothin when a bomb went off in 2006, in the car park. It was the loudest noise I've ever heard, we were that close.
Again very interesting, with your clear info. For me you can make the video 2 minutes longer, that we can look better/longer to the old pictures. For me a little bit to fast to look and read the text. But i like it very much, and play the Video 2 time. 🙏
Great video, Pat. What you probably didn't want to mention is the role of Ratchaprasong intersection during the violent Yellow/Red shirt riots in 2020-21.
It wasn't a high point in political history at all. So doesn't get a mention. If I did, someone will probably say ''farang talking about thai politics on youtube, sue him for defamation'' ....You know how it works here, I'm not actually farang anyway, only 50%
Thank you, once again, for another great video. This intersection is special to me, as it was the first street corner that God called me to preach the gospel after I was born again back in 1995. It was a completely different place back in 1995. Keep up the great work! God bless you.
Thanks you Tony and very glad you enjoyed this, back in 1995 it was a different place altogether as my archive footage showed, not as glossy and glamourous at all. So you're almost 27yrs born again! Impressive.

i like ghost stories although i don't believe them, it is a nice slice of local culture but why did they ban burning candles at the Erawan shrine? they created a nice atmosphere
Thanks Lev, I love ghost stories and movies have run out of decent storylines nowadays. They banned the candles and incense due to environmental reasons.
This place got my attention after the bombing. I went there to clear the energy and check for any ghosts after the explosion. The energy in the area is totally fine now. Places that get a lot of well intentioned people giving off positive vibes will always have good energy anyway. Also in Thailand you get monks clearing a lot of energy in their travels. There is definitely a ghost here though. I wasn't able to make contact with it. It's hard to know if its one of the bombing victims or another entity that might have been in the area for a long time. When I last visited a couple of months ago the ghost was still there buzzed around me and left then followed me across the street and was gone. It might not be a human consciousness though, there are many multidimensional entities. Unless you can make direct contact all you get is the sense of the energy present. Sometimes I have been able to talk to human consciousness that has left the body but not crossed over, sometimes they don't talk. There are lots of reasons why some people don't cross over. In any case, this location is totally fine. Someone who is energy sensitive might feel that presence but there is nothing negative here as far as I can tell.
Seems to be a recurring theme of this part of Bangkok originally dominated by a certain landowner(s), and over time being pushed aside for modern development.....almost. I wonder, how does a palace become a mall? The Siam Intercontinental followed a similar path, no? From palace to sprawling international hotel to mall.
Thanks Pat . Really enjoyed the vid. Starting to believe karma is real . Great footage of the past. How do you find the footage of the the old days? Thanks again
Glad you enjoyed it Paul, the footage comes from searching through old archive videos of Bangkok in each decade, videos come from private collections people put online or plain old youtube searching in Thai language, can be painstaking but always worth it. Often hours to skim through!
I have had more than a few very strange experiences here in Thailand. I had some very old videos I need to edit and have for Holloween later this year. You can not see anything but you can clearly hear walking and some odd noises and voices.
Hey pat great vid, quick question have you ever encountered a supernatural event personally while living in Thailand? I know Thai people are quite superstious... Kind Regards
Also, what the hell happened with the bombing of the Erewan shrine back in 2015? It looked like they had suspects, then backtracked and the story disappeared. When a mystery arises, in most of the world, that's when the story gets interesting. In Thailand, usually the opposite seems to happen. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a ghost that did it. 😁
Pat, have you encountered a ghost before or experienced an unholy presence in Thailand? I felt that some of the open stretch of roads/motorways in Rayong were quite scary at night whilst driving. At some parts, it's very dark as there aren't many lampposts and you can see the mountain silhouettes. If your vehicle breaks down, then all you have is a jungle either side of you and it's very lonely. I did some research and it turns out that there is a cursed intersection with sightings of a female ghost. It has something to do with a nearby abandoned hospital apparently. There are abandoned ships floating around in the gulf as well and tourists have reported crying and moaning sounds late at night on one of the beaches.
Depends what hotel you're at, and how near you are........if you have a direct view of the shrine itself from the window it could attract a few spirits. Only joking!
The Prudential Insurance Bldg in Tokyo is famously haunted. It is on the site of a hotel fire accident but also a historical place for executions. But foreigners bought the Bldg. (:
Thanks for telling us this. I was at the shrine before it was bombed. It struck me that most of the popular shrines around Bkk was of Hindu origin. Can it be because of all the ghost movies from India, dubbed to Thai? Thai TV is full of ghost movies. As a buddhist i was suprised to see all the Hindu gods around.
Thank you Pat, as a Thai guy, this clip make me think to another Supernatural history story in BKK. It is "MAE Nak Phakanong" located at Phakanong district. Every Thai people know what is MAE Nak so i recommended u this story. I would like so much if u make story from ur view.
Thai Buddhism is a strange mix of older beliefs and superstitions, it's quite different to some other countries. I'm no expert, but there are plenty of articles and videos online.

i like ghost stories
although i don't believe them, it is a nice slice of local culture
but why did they ban burning candles at the Erawan shrine? they created a nice atmosphere
Thanks Lev, I love ghost stories and movies have run out of decent storylines nowadays.
They banned the candles and incense due to environmental reasons.
I love anything woo-woo.
Instead of coffee, maybe I buy you an umbrella ☔️🤣🤣
Seems to be a recurring theme of this part of Bangkok originally dominated by a certain landowner(s), and over time being pushed aside for modern development.....almost. I wonder, how does a palace become a mall? The Siam Intercontinental followed a similar path, no? From palace to sprawling international hotel to mall.
Thanks, and good points. There's a bigger picture at play that I simpliefied for this, I will explain....
Thanks. Scary tho
Thanks, hope you've forgotten all about it by bedtime!
It’s a “killer” idea…love it!
Thanks Luke, there's a longer, drawn out tale but I kept it simple....
I have had more than a few very strange experiences here in Thailand. I had some very old videos I need to edit and have for Holloween later this year. You can not see anything but you can clearly hear walking and some odd noises and voices.
You can buy me Coffee for giving me nightmares .
Ok just name the place, and I'll be there in spirit!
Hey pat great vid, quick question have you ever encountered a supernatural event personally while living in Thailand?
I know Thai people are quite superstious... Kind Regards
Thanks Oscar, no I'm yet to encounter anything like that here.

There is a strange statue off Soi 3 that has distorted features, I don't know the story but it is about 4 to 5 meters tall.
Didn't some woman have some kind of medical event while driving and she ended up driving into the shrine grounds?
I've just watched this story while livrng in a hotel nearby. Nightmares guaranteed :D
Depends what hotel you're at, and how near you are........if you have a direct view of the shrine itself from the window it could attract a few spirits.
Only joking!
@@BangkokPatfortunately those closest hotels are a bit too luxurious for my taste 😂
Buddhism is filled with Hindu content, although the Chinese stream uses more Chinese iconography.
@@lukerabin5079 i know they have chineese temples too in Thailand
Not sure the exact reason or connection, I could have explained but some of the stuff was already quite complicated to explain already.
One bar girl I knew called it SI Nar Buddha and would go daily to bring gifts.
His legs are he is here.
Thank you very much, I have had many suggestions about this story so I will definitely look into it and see how I can do it!
Why would Bangkok have Hindu shrines around it when it is a Buddhist dominant country?
Didn't research that bit to be honest.
Thai Buddhism is a strange mix of older beliefs and superstitions, it's quite different to some other countries. I'm no expert, but there are plenty of articles and videos online.
My Thai wife is not at all afraid of ghosts, why she thinks this way I am unsure because her family members are very ghost weary.
Jimmy Barnes missed the 2015 bombing by the skin of his teeth !
Glad to hear that Tony, I don't know much about him but I do remember The Lost Boys track and that he was born a Scotsman!
