Have a sako 85 too, love it. Have you tried ttsx120? I get vgood groups at 2750fps with 40.6gn varget, but haven't had any luck up higher, tried up to 43.5gn What is working well for you?
@@GregorH951 Morning tiger! Hope you are well? 120 Vmax and 120 Sierra Pro Hunters get 47 neat and 154 SST's get 41.9gr of AR2208 (Varget) - warm/hot loads. We make Varget here. I tried some N140 last year and ran it in my 6GT w/ 109 Bergers and it was SUPER consistent, sigle-digit SD and ES for 10-shot groups, repeatedly. I'm currently working it up in 223 Ackley with Berger 80.5 and 85.5's with good results. At $100 /8# less than Varget, it's a winner.
I'm using Varget in my 6x47 with awesome results but have been thinking about trying N140 or N150. I hear the N150 is very similar to Varget. Did you try N150 also?
The one thing I really disagree with the Hornady podcast about is that seating depth doesn’t make a difference. I have been handloading precision ammo for many years. And in my experience, seating depths makes the biggest difference of all factors other than barrel quality and bullet selection. So in my experience,Hornady podcast is dead wrong about that. And I’ve seen that repeated over many many platforms of bolt action rifles.
I have had the same experience on many rifles. A few are extremely picky about seating, but some not so much. I have been trying to study why? So far I think it may be related to axial bore alignment and throat depth, but I haven't proven anything scientifically.
"Large" changes in charge weight is a relative concept. Not all powders are the same. Some will give you a 50fps change with 0.2gr of powder, others require 0.5gr or more to get a 50fps change. You have to test and analyze each powder to see how it changes with charge weight. Hornady is also FOS that their bullets aren't sensitive to seating depth. Most of their bullets are secant, and thus sensitive to seating depth. This is why people love or hate hornady bullets. If you find the sweet spot, it's REALLY sweet. Otherwise, it's mediocre to poor. Tangent bullets, like the ones in this video, are tolerant to a lot of seating depths, and easier to work with. Supposedly, hornady's new aero match line is tangent, and the reported BCs reflect this. Generally speaking, you will get the best performance for long range precision out of secant, IF you tune them to the sweet spot. While tangent will lag behind in performance, it's way easier to work with. This dilemma, is why they made hybrids. Don't believe me?? Good! Go test it and see for yourself.
With my barrel length the 160 are the heaviest I use, because the 7-08 hasn't enough power to push heavier bullets fast enough. I know I could shoot heavier bullets but the CB gain isn't enough to compensate the loss of muzzle velocity (no ballistic gain)
Hi, I would really like to see you do some load development with the 162grn Hornady ELD bullets. I use both the ELD-M and the ELD-X. This gives a match load for target shooting and practice, and a hunting load that shoots exactly the same (inside any SENSIBLE hunting distance) I am using RS powder (Reload Swiss) but I am very keen8 to see what Vihtavouri N150 would do with those bullets. Nice to see someone on RUclips using the 7mm-08. I think it is a much underestimated/overlooked cartridge.
Nice rifle I really liked that chassis but I buy 1.35 inch barrels to match my actions and they don’t allow that and aesthetically I like to look of longer Barrels. I know it seems like short barrels are popular now but I’m just not a fan looks wise, but you have a really nice set up. Congrats.
Would love to see you test some ttsx or lrx. I have a 7mm-08 tikka that I've only shot factory ammo through but I am going to start working up a load for. Would love to see how the results compare. Your content reminds me of Jhonnys reloading bench videos but a little different and I love it.
Jump the 168 30 they say when you get two separate groups like that it is seating depth. And it always looks like that 3 in 1 hole and two high left😊 And yes you need to get 3000 171gr. Barnes Get a box of 180gr. Berger hybrids...no need to ...but i am just curious.
Question: was the IMR 4895 delivering similar 5-shot groups at 100 yards compared to the N-150? I’m asking because I have a 7mm-08 rifle needing load development. I don’t have N-150 but do have a LOT of H-4895. We all want to see low standard deviations, but that statistic is nearly meaningless with a sample size of 5. If you have a big extreme spread, it isn’t going to get better with a bigger sample size. But in the end the target is all that matters. (I understand that velocity variations become more important as range is extended.)
IMR4895 was giving me great accuracy but ES was too much. At 840 yards I was hitting high and low on shots purely based on velocities. I had a chronograph and with video I could line up high and low shots based on velocities. I do shoot far, not everyone does. But I’d recommend IMR4895 to try H4895 is likely to give similar results I’d guess
@ thanks for the reply! I don’t have access to any ranges beyond 300 yards, but I understand the constant velocity becomes more important as you expand your range.
Have you had any interest in N550 or N540? Ive had good luck with N550 in a 26" barrel 7-08 gas gun its seens to be a polarizing topic between the 100 vs 500 series powders for people but im not sure why truthfully
My take on heavy rifles is, if a guy can’t pack a 20lbs rifle he probably can’t pack out 400lbs of elk. If it’s a confidence rifle, pack that bad boy. I know you said you didn’t intend to use it and my take is kind of beside your point. Jmho

if you can find the 139gr Hornady CX bullets that would be cool to see how they stack up against the Barnes coppers.
