- Hit The Lights Demo
Metallica
No Life 'Til Leather
Track #1
James Hetfield - Rhythm Guitar, Vocals
Lars Ulrich - Drums
Dave Mustaine - Lead Guitar
Ron McGovney - Bass
This demo was recorded in July 1982.
Quote from Ron McGovney in 1996:
"Lars hooked up with this guy named Kenny Kane who was a real snake in the grass. He had this punk label called High Velocity which was a division of Rocshire Records, an Orange County record company. He said he would put up the money to have us do an EP. So we went in the studio and recorded the songs Hit The Lights , Mechanix , Phantom Lord , Jump In The Fire , Motorbreath , Seek And Destroy and Metal Militia , which were done in an 8-track studio in Tuscin called Chateau East. After hearing the tapes Kenny realized we weren't a punk band so he ended up not being interested. So we took the tapes which eventually became the 'No Life Till Leather' demo."
Imagine a world where Cliff is still alive and Mustaine is still in Metallica...
Tim Fennis I think Metallica would be one of the greatest metal bands
I can' t imagine it. That means no Megadeth
...lol the songs that got Metallica noticed....were written by Mustaine....Riiiight...Metallica became just a metal band after mustaine was pushed out...Mustaine has and can play better then Hammett...(hammett learned from someone where as Mustaine taught himself.....twice)
What would have happened is that Cliff and Dave would be years ahead James and Lars. This would push both of them to spend more time getting better at their instruments and less time drinking. Knowing James, he would have caught up to both of them but Lars I'm not sure, he would either have been kicked out ot the band for being not good enough but if he pushed himself as hard as James they would have been a perfect band. Their songs would have been both Metallicaish and Megadethish. Alot faster, more technical and with hints of classical
James would still come up with amazing riffs and with added knowledge he would have been better, Dave would be making amazing solos and alot of guitar wiggly between the song's parts (like the Megadeth from today). Lars would bring better song structure (thing Megadeth is lacking right now) and he would be better at drums and Cliff would still be putting hints of classical in the songs, louder bass and possibly more clean parts so we would end up with more ballads
Tim Fennis a shitty glam band without the hair lol, I want my megadeth pls, and non glamy metallica
no one posted the lyrics yet sooo
No life till leather, we're gonna kick some ass tonight!
We got the metal madness
when our fans start screaming
It's right, well all right, yeah
When we start to rock, we'll never wanna stop again!
Hit the lights, hit the lights, hit the lights!
We know our fans are insane
We're gonna blow this place away
With volume higher
than anything today, the only way
When we start to rock, we never
wanna stop again!
Hit the lights, hit the lights, hit the lights!
With all our screaming
We're gonna rip right through your brain
We got the lethal power, it kscausing you sweet pain, oh, sweet pain!
When we start to rock, we never wanna stop again!
Hit the lights
Hit the lights
Hit the lights
Hit them lights
So much influences from Diamond Head in the singing.
James's voice in here is beyond recognition to his famous voice
In the beginning he tried to sing like the guy from Diamond Head
@@Daniel-kx7ipi’m pretty sure that’s dave singing in the beginning not james
@@PeytonKoehlerMusicNo it's James
James sounds like Dave right now or is Dave singing💀
@@Daniel-kx7ipI swear Dave mustaine is singing
man people are so high on cliff they forgot about the original bassists. Not so bad. This is back when Metallica was thrash and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay underground.
@Sean Mellert yes
I love Cliff Burton but I agree with you
They forget about the true original bassist, James Hetfield, at least at the first demo. Then Ron (here) and then Cliff
This is like heavy metal
Dave has said Ron was the was the best musician of the four at the time.
It's strange that James' voice on this has a range that he achieved again on MoP. He was probably aiming towards a more British style of singing during that time...
NR Productions I think he was really into budgie etc back then and that's where the singing influence was from
probably , i think he tried to sound like the vocalist from diamond head
He was trying to sound like the singer from Diamond Head
The Schwifty Pig *Sean Harris*
@@dhlhthriwdhskissos9606 the voice isn't him, the vocals in this song is from lloyd grant, james hetfield started singing in metallica since 1983 - today
Jame's voice sounds actually (and strangely) MELODIC!!!
Cliff wasn’t bass player in this....this was actually Ron Mcgovney......Metallica’s first bass player
Good 😊
This demo is fucking amazing. And James singing "The Mechanix" is so wonderfully surreal.
omg these vocals lol.
Gives me hope to start singing xd
Still better than anything post master of puppets.
@@onutube6392 ajfa is a fucking masterpiece
@@CariHelstrom oh shit forgot avkut that. Still dont like his vocals after master of puppets
@@onutube6392 welp
Actually, Lars got the name from his friend who was starting a rock radio show. He asked Lars what to name it between Metal Mania or Metallica. Lars then said Metal Mania and asked if he could use the name Metallica.
This was before he met James.
Why would someone dislike this?
Because is cool!
Was probably Dave mustaine
Vocals
The vocals
Yeah probably vocals
Ron McGovney on bass. Sounds pretty solid.
Ron was a solid player. He just got tired of being mooched off of and being the responsible one and having to explain to his parents why this was all costing them nothing but time, money and heartache. And this is coming from a nearly life-long fan of the band. Ron was not treated well at all. Got so sick of it all that he quit, kicked everyone out of his parents’ rental unit and nearly severed ties with his good friend James forever. They had more ambition than decency, pretty much the formula for making it back then especially.
@@rickkelley4618 yes indeed that is indeed what happened.
@@rickkelley4618 Even Mustaine himself later has said that he was dissapointed McGovney didn't continue on in metal as he recognized that he had potential.
Good 😌
I cant believe these videos are still here. These uploads were the first place I heard this demo in 2009 or 2010. I always wished as a teen that I had been born in the 70s so I could experience the 80s but I think mid 90s is an alright middle ground. I have many fond memories of "surfing the web" as they used to say, finding all new music and stuff like this from bands I already loved and was inspired by.
The 80s were definitely the shit but the 90s weren’t too shabby either.
That's why Lars hated the internet so much, he knew people would start finding about all the lies 🤣🤣🤣fucking scum
i honestly prefer this one, would love a version where the audio is more clear, james vocals with dave as background sounds so much better
This was the first ever song i heard from Metallica after i was handed a copy of No Life Til Leather Demo in 82'...Had never heard anything like it up to then..Still awesome to this day...🤟
Gives me chills every time when the intro plays
Hearing this is where you can see Metallica’s influences worn on their sleeve . The vocals are so 70’a NWBHM
Is it weird that I find this version of this song better than the final version on kill em all?
Terry R. Not at all. The original version has a lot of little nuances that didn't end up on Kill 'Em All, including Mustaine helping with vocals and the second lead part, which I think was written by Lloyd Grant.
Agreed
Not weird but I disagree, totally understand why you would though
Tomversal 😎
Yes.
I love the drums at the start
Dave literally set his fret board ablaze in this song... this demo, let me know that there are levels to this guitar thing... because this version is far and away better than the album cut
FUCKIN DAVE MUSTAINE MAN!!
That string bend at 3:55 is superhuman. I'd break an 11 gauge E string if I even attempted that.
Who the heck are these Metallica guys everyone's been going so crazy about?
I'm telling you if this is not Dave Mustaine singing then it's him and James both together
😂
Agreed
You can hear Dave for sure.
No. This is just James singing.
You need to do your research.
@@russkate88 this is up to then ear no research needed
James vocals are VERY late 70s here. Sound like Getty Lee from Rush lol.
And Sean Harris from Diamond Head
half of these vocals were Mustaine who has this tone to this day
@@Omertahun who told you that bullshit?
No kidding
Its all James on this demo tape.@Omertahun
Thank you Dave for creating this
James Hetfield is the composer of this hahah -.-
@@xxFABRI56xx he stole this from a previous band . no remorse and motor breath too
@@ronpaul1082 yea because he wrote them, that's like saying Dave mustaine stole jump in the fire and mechanix from his previous band panic..
dave wrote 0% of this song
@@uroboric the song was unfinished when Hetfield took it to Lars, they finished the main structure of the song, it got heavily reworked once Dave came into the band, being this aggresive and heavy, and then he also wrote the solos, the ones that Kirk still played on the final version with some adaptations.
I absolutely love this song
I love hearing this song in the tempo it was written !
Would of loved for Mustaine to have at least gotten to record Kill em All with Metallica since he was such a big influence on what became the album. Feel that he did deserve to have that and afterwards to left or been kicked out and form Megadeth and we'd still have both bands with all their great albums. Also realize that Mustaines blueprints are present in Ride the Lighting which would of been nice to have seen too with him being there fot that too would have been very interesting.
Yes they did. Diamond Head is probably the number one band that has been credited by Metallica.
It’s 2024 and these 4 guys are still around, they need to make another demo
So James was and still is a huge Diamond Head fan so during the first two years of Metallica through 1981 and 1982, James sang like Sean Harris from Diamond Head except he sounded like a kid going through puberty sucked in some helium. Also when the No Life ‘Till Leather demo was released in ‘81 he was only seventeen so he was just a baby.
What the hell James
1 year later he sounds unrecognizable. Maybe Dave backing vocals is the reason?
I’m very glad they got Cliff but Ron McGovney was solid af, just because he wasn’t flashy doesn’t mean he wasn’t good. Even Dave considered him a very competent bass player
Fuckin hell Mustaine tore that guitar apart!
Man I have been seriously overlooking early metallica. I feel so stupid
Elmo Hitting Those Vocals
Pure Speed Metal!
The Solo! It so much better than Hammet's.
Wtf? This solo it's almost no sense. That is throw shit against Kirk because you like Mustaine
@@xxFABRI56xx It's cool how Kirk took some of the best ideas for the album version, but overall Dave's solo is a mess.
@@xxFABRI56xx no dude it's called preference. Believe it or not there are people who prefer this solo, your kirk fanboy ego doesn't need to be offended by that
True
@@xxFABRI56xxits literally the same solo kirk plays with some variations lmao, even the main forms are the ones Kirk still played, the main difference would be the recording quality due being recorded on a better studio and also some parts he slowed while still playing the same patterns.
This is Dave Mustaine playing lead, and Ron on bass(?)
Yep
This song was written by Troy James with James in Leather Charm summer of '81. Ron McGovney confirmed this on KNAC
man this is badass
Is that James’ voice?
Yep, still trying to sing like the guy from diamond head.
Lothar Mallea I can kinda see it...2:04 oh yep there it is
@@woofspider330 that one's James or Dave?
Yes
correct, it was james. he wanted to be a graphic designer before metallica ...
@HandofMisery The band James and Ron were in before Metallica was called Phantom Lord. You probably know that but I figured it was worth mentioning for those who were unaware.
How can 19- and 20-year old people do so many masterpieceing masterpieces?!
1:18 first solo
old school metallica is the best
Amen to that. They completely lost their blade after Ciff's death.
Definitely the coolest song
I dont know who you are but.....Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks and Finally Thanks
I actually prefer this version :D
hail dave mustaine any thing his in if fuckin epic
James sounds a bit like robert plant in this. It's so unreal. Happy birthday James \m/
because he was imitating sean harris, who imitated robert plant
I totally like this. I prefer Grant's solo but James vocals sounds likeable to me.
i wonder do people think that kirk left some of the parts beecause he liked it and it didnt needed to be changed alot and he liked Mustains solos
I dont know who designed the logo, but lars formed the band with james and they came up with the name.
@UKLegendUK Yeah, I know man :L Not really sure why I put that, I think I might have been referring to the name coming from the name of Hetfield/Tanner's band, idk.
👍🏻
Agreed.
nice
@EddieVH666 I agree, just as your opinion is that this is better, personally, i love the screechy tone James used in kill em all
@HandofMisery Actually no. Hit the lights was co-written from Jaymz and Lars. Hetfield did Phantom lord in a band he was in high school
@CoolKwstas123 No, sorry to burst the bubble, but Jaymz and Hugh Tanner wrote parts of Hit The Lights, Motorbreath and Phantom Lord all before James and Lars even met, James and Lars finished Hit The Lights off though.
im 48 i had this lp wish i could get it back lol i got it on iron maiden concert
Maybe it's weird but I find that guitar tone better than Kill'em All original tone
I enjoy that dirty garage vibe!
@skiiddo Mustaine wrote Phantom Lord dude... Tanner's not even recognised on the credits for that one... I agree with you on the others though dude :)
We was trying so hard to sing like diamond head
The quote in the description saying whats-his-face didn't think this was punk. But like how? Kinda gives me some Dead Kennedys vibes lol other than the lengthier guitar solos lol
I Think this is better.
Glad this vocals didnt end up in the album.
I can hear Dave.
What a perfect world fucking right
Sounds like both dave and james singing. Fucking weird but james' voice is much better here then now.
@HandofMisery Stone Cold Crazy is NOT the first Speed Metal song at all. Its from Queens 1974 album Sheer Heart Attack. Two years before that Deep Purple released Machine Head in 1972. That album features the song Highway Star which is probably the earliest known song that could be construed as Speed Metal.
amen
James hetfild
Dave mustain
Cliff burton
Gar samuelson
In this age, there was four genious on the metallica and megadeth.when that four make a team, that will be a world best.....but two die,two old....
So what!
Is that James on vocals?? =0
YEAH Diamond Head influenced.
At first I thought that was Dave singing
This is better than the studio version
The end...Stone cold crazy - Queen
@thththtthththtthth I thought EVERYONE knew, Mustaine never shuts up about it.
The lyrics are hard as hell to even understand. It's better to just listen to kill em all
Personally I believe the vocals are easier to understand here
James sounds so fucking unfamiliar here without that aggressive, raspy, punky, crunch to his voice
He sounds like modern james but weird
Did Lloyd Grant play the lead guitar on this? or was it Dave?
Kiss & Maiden vocal
Jag är tyvärr inte gammal nog att flyta hemifrån (soon...) så min morsa tvingade med mig upp hit efter att hon träffade en ny kille som bor här.
Men ska flytta tillbaka jättesnart.
How old you guys? This was still around in 85
did james play bass on this demo or only when rehearsing it with Lloyd and lard
I think it's Hetfield and mustaine singing together isn't it or just mustaine?
Hetfield singing with Mustaine backing
Fucking Agree!!!!
Mettallica Forever
I like this version better than the Kill 'Em All version, honestly...
@LordBratcurry nope, it's james
El que canta es james?
Si, solo suena diferente por la calidad de audio y por los efectos agregados en post-produccion
Jag tänkte inte på det...D:
Själv bor jag i Sollefteå, men kommer från Stockholm.
This song it´s the fucking law!! like if you also love mustaine singing in metallica! :) damn it why was him an alcoholic? xd without his problem metallica would probably be even better with mustaine (no doubt) but still metallica are the best and also mustaine! :D metal rules! lml
James sounds like Sean Harris
