No ridiculously elaborate sets, makeup or stupid costume. A simple dress, great singing and conviction in her vocal expressions. Fantastic. She killed it on You Don’t Own Me!

Lesley Gore accumulated more then 25 Smash Hits singles, on the top 40s Billboard Chart List, between 1962 through 1966, and she received so many Golden Platinum Record Awards, as well as a total of 500 million copies, in record sales, but she only ended up with $50 000, in her pocket, when she died of lung cancer, in 2015. Where the hell! did all that money go to and who benefitted, from all these profits? That remains a mystery to me...! Personally, I think that Mercury Records has the anwser to all of this. Poor! ...I remember seeing and hearing Leslie Gore in the early 60's on TV and radio when I was 7, 8 and 9 yrs old ... I loved it.. Now Im 61 and I still never ever seen anyone who sang like Leslie Gore. And there have been tons of killer woman singers in rock and pop, (and country) over the years.. This girl was just a 16/17 year old teenager and she had total control right out of the box. The FIRST real girl of the ROCK era, along with Ronnie Specter.. Hit after hit in the mid sixties right from the word go.. A real pioneer for woman in Rock, and Rock Music in general.. A True Superstar beyond Superstardom along with The Beatles, The Stones, and Bob Dylan. I never noticed all this when I was a kid (especially with all the great music around in the 60's). But now that I'm older, and watching all her performances from over the years, here on You Tube, it's like WTF....God Bless you Leslie Gore...frankfromthe60's
Lesley Gore makes one to dance. She had a clear and sweet voice, pronouncing every single word so beautifully. Watching her singing fills my heart with joy. Sixties were the best years for good music and naturally songs. “It’s my party” is a treasure that be remembered for many years to come. Her song should be carved on a golden stone (Goldstein) for an eternity! RIP Lesley Gore.

Many people forget what an incredible feat that Leslie Gore had by having the #2 song right behind the Beatles "I Want to Hold Your Hand". This was like having your high school football team go up against the NY Giants and still take 2nd place.
She had one of the lovliest and most sensual voices that the Good Lord ever gifted a young woman. I would loved to have known her. She was so fantastically talented. My 7th grade girlfriend was a dead ringer for Lesley and used to lip synch her songs for me in 1965. I was SO LUCKY!
Great performance showcases how she stood out in the beginning of her career when no solo female singer would get the attention of the producers. I could do without the erroneous subtitles.
I watched that concert a few years ago on TCM. Stunned by the roster of stars! James Brown and Leslie Gore made the Stones look like beginners!!! They said Mick didn't want to go on stage after James. I don't blame him; James Brown was pure energy in human form!

Lesley's first attempt at writing songs was the two songs she wrote/cowrote for her third album, "BOYS, BOYS, BOYS" : "Leave Me Alone" and "I'm Coolin', No Foolin'".
She never got the recognition she deserved. She was a hitmaker for sure. But because of the double track vocals her extraordinary talents as a singer were overlooked. Double tracking was usually the resort of those who couldn't sing. It might have given the impression that she really didn't have much of a voice. But the truth was just the opposite. The double tracking gave her a sound that was very commercial, however there was a downside to it, perception wise.

It was filled with local California high school kids who got free tickets for the most part, and filmed in what passed for a school auditorium. The producer, Steve Binder, had a super small budget and got most of the stars for nothing or next to it. Gore, ironically, was the feature act and biggest headliner in the show.
Same league as Dusty Springfield for being a pioneer for female artists in of that time period. Both sadly missed but their music will keep them alive.rip Both class singers!🎶🎶👍👍🛵
I thought it was great when "You Don't Own Me" became an anthem for women. It was a way of saying you can hold on to your identity and self worth. Something we all need!
Awesome! She had just turned eighteen the summer of 1964 and had six top ten hits in a row by this time. She was the official headliner of the Teenage Music International Awards. She really lets loose. :D
Thomas A. Richards Madonna may have sold 10x more records but Gore has a much better voice. And her songs have stood the test time better than Madonna's.
"You Don't Own Me" only making it to number 2 is a little misleading. It spent something like 8 weeks at number 2 behind one of the Beatles huge hits at number 1.
I have this concert on DVD. This concert is called the T.A.M.I. show and was filmed for theatrical release in 1964. The concert was finally released on DVD in 2009. This is certainly a collector's item... a gem. The entire concert was filmed before an audience, with a live orchestra and no lip synching! The concert included all of the following... Lesley Gore, Jan and Dean as hosts, Marvin Gaye, The Miracles, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Supremes, The Beach Boys. What a cast! And each of the performers sang at least four songs each in their entirety.
I actually had it in the 1990's on VHS. I lent it out and never got it back : - (. Did you ever see "Grace Of My Heart" Bridget Fonda played a singer named Kelly who was loosely based on Lesley. Can you imagine how challenging it must have been to be Gay in those days and keep it a secret.
laminage I heard that the 1990's VHS version of the TAMI show did not have the Beach Boys segment and may be missing some other segments as well. From what I have researched and I may be a little off on my facts but I read that the Beach Boys' father who managed the group had the Beach Boys segment removed from the TAMI show before its theatrical release in 1964 hence the VHS version may not contain the Beach Boys segment. The TAMI show was released again to the movie theatres in New York City in 1980. There was no Beach Boys segment included in the 1980 theatrical rerelease when I saw the rereleased film at a 42nd Street NYC movie theatre. I did not even know that there was a five song Beach Boys segment until I accidently discovered that fact while doing some research on another topic sometime in the 2000's. However, by 2009 whatever legal obstacles that prevented the Beach Boys segment from being included were resolved by the time of the 2009 DVD release of the TAMI show. But then, your VHS version just might contain the Beach Boys segment since I heard that there were some bootlegged copies of the original TAMI show with and without the cuts.
You are right. From what I heard in the Commentaries in the DVD Version Brian Wilson wanted their part "Cut". He was starting on Pet Sounds and he wanted the guys to "Reinvent" themselves like The Beatles did with "Rubber Soul". I remember seeing the Clips of The Beach Boys in a 1980's Documentary where the prologue was in 1976 when Brian Wilson was celebrating his 32 Birthday where he had been in his room hiding out. I saw the performance from 1965 and I was dumbfounded that he hit rock bottom. It was surprising that he even did the Show considering that on Dec 23 1964 he suffered his Nervous Breakdown which was the same Night that The Supremes pretaped their performance on Ed Sullivan and so many years later Brian Wilson and Diana Ross were both decorated by The President on the same night.
