    In defence of IGA, they're not individual chain... They're the Independent Grocers of Australia, a brand of independently owned and operated stores that work collectively to compete with the Big Two (Coles Myer and Woolworths). So yeah, their stores are a bit more 'homey' and costs are higher, but all owned by the people running them rather than a big Corp.

    • @Случайноерусскоеимя
      @Случайноерусскоеимя 2 месяца назад +20

      Yep, IGA is a buying group, but still doesn't have the pull of the duopoly...

    • @peter65zzfdfh

      Exactly, some are kind of poor, but some are absolutely amazing. It’s basically up to the owner of that particular store. Also in Tasmania just getting stuff there is hard, there’s a reason why Aldi don’t exist there, they can’t be bothered setting up a more difficult supply chain.

    In the 19th century, Wineglass Bay became a hotspot for the whaling industry. Whaling stations popped up, and the bay's waters often turned red with whale blood. It's a stark contrast to the pristine beauty we see today, but it's an important part of the bay's history.

    Finally in Tassie - yay! Make sure that you spend a weekend in Hobart exploring the city, and do Salamanca (Sat mornings); Cascade Brewery; Mt Wellington - view of the city is fantastic; Bruny Island - southern coastline is amazing; Out to the peninsula for Port Arthur and the spectacular coastline; Mt Field NP (if not snowing). Plan your west coast leg around the weather, ie pick a good weather window otherwise you'll miss some of the best bits. Stay in a cosy cottage at Stanley and have fantastic lobster mornay from the co-op. So much to see and do, enjoy!
    Oh, and another thing, as you mention, you don't have those huge distances to cover, so there's plenty of time to stop for all the little stuff along the way. You might have missed it but between Launceston and St Helens you have vibrant Derby: a great lunch at the Weldborough Pub, the chance to immerse yourself in the beautiful myrtle beech forest in the short walk near Pyengana, the Saint Columba Falls too. I hope you experienced these and they just didn't make the final edit.

    The geography of Tasmania is amazing. As you've found out on the East coast, there are white beaches and farms. If you go through the central plateau, it's almost like tundra, with short, stubby trees and lots of rocks. If you go to the west coast, the forest is very thick and has a dark green tinge, and there aren't too many people living there. If you go to Queenstown, it's like Mordor if it rained. And if you want to go to the south of Hobart, you have to go through Hobart as there are no bypasses to go around it.
    And of course there is the roadkill. So many dead animals. I've lived here for 13 years and I see a dead animal every day I drive. Sad? Yes, but it's also an indicator of how many animals there are here.
    Do you want to see platypuses? Mole Creek. Like weird shops? Reliquarie in LaTrobe. Like mountains in the background? Sheffield. A nice long valley? Fingal valley.

They support youth sporting events and help keep small communities going, unlike Aldi how unashamedly copy established brands place them in very similar packaging and send the profits out of the community and out of the country. They say they're the cheapest by making knockoffs and take 1cent off brand name products.

    Welcome to Tassie! When you do the West Coast be sure to take a boat trip up the Pieman River from the town of Corinna. Corinna is one of the remotest towns on the island and is surrounded by beautiful wilderness, you can camp there and there's also lots of accommodation in old miner's huts. The river cruises are really the best way to experience the West Coast. There's also the cruise from Strahan up the Gordon River, which is more expensive and more touristy, but stunning nonetheless. When you come by Hobart be sure to go up kunanyi/Mt Wellington, you can drive to the top and the views are stunning, but the real gems on the mountain are the tracks that run through the bush, I recommend the Lenah Valley track leaving from the Springs to Sphinx Rock (easy flat walk), a magical place! Glad to see you finally made it here! Oh and the Bullock Festival is on in Oatlands this weekend, it's the most old world town in Australia.

Stanley, historic fishing town, Marrawah/Couta Rocks nothing between there and Africa. Also ‘The channel’ area south of Hobart. Magical coastal views, deserted beaches, Orchards. Agree Egg and Bacon Bay is a gem. Tassie in Winter has the advantage of cheaper prices and having the tourist spots mostly to yourself.
