  • Every October, the Friends of the East Broad Top host their Fall Reunion, an event to celebrate and show off the work the organization has done to help preserve the history of the East Broad Top Railroad. This was the first time in over a decade that the railroad had an operational steam locomotive, and no. 16 was put to work each morning with freight specials to Colgate Grove. On the return journey, these specials ran right through the Rockhill yard to Odd Fellows Cemetery, representing the first few hundred feet of a joint project by the Friends and the railroad to reopen a further eight miles of track to Saltillo. After the freights, no. 16 took point for each day's regular excursions trains while the railroad's two motorcars M1 and M3 were brought out to make their own runs along the line. Meanwhile, the Rockhill Trolley Museum was hosting their Fall Spectacular, giving visitors a chance to ride some of the rarer trolley cars in their collection along a regauged and electrified portion of the EBT's Shade Gap branch. Despite the poor weather the Railroad, Friends, and Trolley Museum came together to put on a wonderful display of railroading in the mountains of Pennsylvania, and I can't wait for my next visit to "Old Eastie."

    My son is special needs and he is overjoyed to see the East Broad Top railroad up and running again and hopes that real soon or sooner than soon the entire line is restored and used again as well as all the other steam locomotives 🚂 and recommends FMW Solutions for help in their restorations. He also finds the motorcars M1 and M3 very interesting and thinks they are highly underrated rail transportation vehicles.

      The motorcars are very cool! Restoring all 6 steam locomotives and reopening the whole line is their plan, but it will be many years before that is completed.

      Thanks! They only have track down for a few hundred feet but they've cleared a few miles of brush, I heard they want to be there in under a decade.

    I have a question, why do some of the tourist railroads run freight? Wouldn’t they not make a profit?

    • @SmokyMtnSteam
      @SmokyMtnSteam  8 месяцев назад +3

      Usually they'll sell expensive tickets to photographers to cover the cost but in this case it was just for fun.

    At a little over 7 minutes in you show a dilapidated brick structure. What was it and where is it located? Thanks. PS - very nicely done video.

      I'm not sure of its purpose but it is on the trolley museum's property just behind Car Barn 2

    Is it possible for steam excursion lines to be able to add modern day industry customers to serve on days they aren’t running excursions? I imagine if the states in which these lines incentivized businesses to do so in like some part of a agreement it’d be a railfans dream

    • @SmokyMtnSteam

      Some already do, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum has several customers on their line and do switching for the large industrial park in Tyner, TN

    That unit train should have had a polish before being let out, it looked only good enough for a trip to the scrapyard. Who needs rail motorcars, when steam engines grab a crowd's attention?
