Wow love it, buy an old machine cheap, fix the problems & have a great machine to use , you don’t get rich buying all new and they are probably not as good as the old stuff anyway. Love the way you built your trucks, fixed up old machine chop tools etc .
Nice job as usual Jonathan. I was disappointed not to see this unit cat-scanned, but I'm confident that you will have this done before this backhoe sees any serious work.
The Cat-Scanning he does is the best diagnostic tool to determine what needs doing next. I have been waiting to see another Cat-Scan of this tractor too!
Have a friend who went to an auction , equipment being sold. There was a Case 580 extended hoe model with cab. The block had a large crack in the side of the block , no antifreeze issue. The owner fired it up ran great for a few minutes good oil pressure. Nobody would bid on it . My friend threw in a bid of 2500, he got it. Found a competent welder who did a really nice repair weld on block. Never be scared off of something that needs attention, and elbow grease. Jonathan, you got a nice unit there, tractors with loader bucket just the handiest equipment to have.
What go around comes back around 10 fold when needed. This is what friends are for. We all shoot guns in my neck of the woods that is why we live in the middle of nowhere. Great video thanks for sharing
Jonathan, you are a wizard. One of the few people left in this world and the only one that I personally know that can take the world's scrab and cast offs and for little or no investment except for your time restore it to a useful piece of equipment, sometimes as in the case of your "yard art" hot rods, things of exceptional beauty. I say your interior at your last drive in on the roaster and it's gorgeous.
I'm glad you didn't have to break the machine apart, but I'm sorry you didn't have to break the machine apart because now I don't get to watch you break a machine apart! You obviously know your stuff, but we knew that years ago or we wouldn't be watching. Thanks!
I learn something new today. I never knew there was such a thing as a wet starter. Only bad thing I can see is you'd never know when the rear main seal went. Lol
Motorcycles have them as well, Japanese stuff KTM, etc. They have a seal in them as well If they yo they'll keep working for a while until the dust and oil mixture buildup from the brushes will make them stick and eventually lose contact. Good thing about not knowing when your main seal goes is you don't have to worry about it, and the leaked oil will be put to good use :P It's like a internal engine seal I guess, no dry dirt contamination and wet on both sides. my guess would be is that they'd last a lot longer.
You proved the doubters wrong once again , one old machine repaired and ready for work . What some people see as scrap , others see as a running working piece of machinery . With many years left to work with . . You have the foresight that many others don't possess . , Mainly the ones who look but can't see . Keep up the excellent work and content Johnathon . Keep the old stuff coming . . . Top man . .
When I first started in construction in 1969 about the only backhoe you ever saw on a job was a Case. For the next 15 or 20 years that was about all I ever saw and I have seen a bunch of that series on jobs. They were on those jobs because they were really dependable and lasted for years. No more than you will use it with a little maintenance your grandchildren will be using it when they are grown.
I was wondering when one of your dogs would make it back into a video can't beat having man's best friend around. Good deal on the backhoe with a little bit of work you have a good working machine.
You sir are a dying breed! You understand the machine you are operating and work it to it’s limitations, but don’t exceed them. You are becoming a rare breed. That 580 will serve you well! Case made a good rubber tired backhoe!
[thank, you for you're great video.👍 I've. got case equipment coming out to the farm to service and install a new replacement diesel injection pump on my 1966, case 530 ck diesel Backhoe]👍
I like the way you're thinking. Get rid of the safety hazards first and treat it right so it keeps on working for you. Lots of Luck with it. Nana has to approve the repairs first before you use it tough.
The ever famous wet bell housing. Those things were used on Hyster forklifts with manual transmissions thru the 1970's and maybe into the early 1980's. I started working for Hyster dealer in 2000 so I missed them during their heyday but some came to the shop occasionally. One time in 2006, we got an 18,000lb capacity lift in the shop with leaky starter. I replaced the starter but when you ran the lift, it acted like the clutch wasn't disengaging. I had to contact corporate and they referred me to an old timer still working at a dealer in Chicago who knew something about the H180E I was working on. Turns out there's a scavenger pump - basically a float with a check valve - that only is supposed to let a couple of quarts hydraulic oil into the bell housing. I repaired the float and needle in the scavenger pump and worked like a charm. The excess fluid was causing the pressure plate assembly to act like a torque converter almost and wouldn't let it disengage. If there's only a quart or 2 of fluid, the bottom of the pressure plate assembly splashes the oil around to keep the disc wet. Any more than that and the pressure plate acts like a pump impeller.
Years of experience, looking at old machines. It is obvious that you know what to look for. I don't hardly think it is luck that you pick so many things that will run. I think you have a good idea of what to expect when you get them home and start messing with them.
Jonathan thank you for being so informative about dead in the Pistons in the pressure also about the seal unit with the starter....... you’re very knowledgeable man it’s always enjoyable to watch your channel!!!!!!!!! you never know what you’re going to learn about all things you mess with and all the talent you have under one hat....... I’m hope you’re teaching some young men or women how to make things happen...... My father was always trying to show me things..... and I said yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah well when he died...... I had to go buy books about things he was willing to teach me for free,,,,,,hard lesson in life to learn keep up the great work stay healthy junkmando
Music to my ears we did a lot of that on the Eastern shore of Virginia. Great video Jonathan. Congratulations on finding out about that starter. Thanks for sharing 👍
Im so glad to hear that someone else does this. My neighbor down the Lake runs a clip of 9m. Then I unload 3 shotgun blasts. Like Yall. It's good to know we can shoot round here. Good Guys with Guns. Now back to that backhoe hydraulics.
That is an awesome block repair. So much damage to both sides. And a stressed block also. So there is more weld inside on the webbing than outside. Somebody probably long gone did that who was very skilled. When the machine was new and a new block was $$$. Must have been a runaway to cause that much damage. I have never heard of a RosaMaster pump causing a runaway though.
Here in Kentucky the Case 580 backhoe is still considered top of the line for farm use, and just all around handy tool for some small builder around here. Great video keep em coming. Some of the leaky 580s around here I bet have wrong starter. Will pass on information.
Top dog machine when it came out new. The only way you could be in it better if it was free. Usually 1500$ gets you pieces of a backhoe or a major overhaul project. Good for you. Good advice about older equipment use too. Thanks for sharing
Hi Jonathan, just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. I am impressed how you always seem to overcome problems, ever how minute or complex and, you just keep working at it you and don't get excited. I also enjoy how "down to earth" you are and a seem to be a wonderful family man. As my Grandpa said about guys like you, "he can make a silk purse out of a sows ear". You keep up the good work and I really enjoy watching your videos. --Jim Gainer
*Getting things put to rights is always a good thing that makes a man feel a sense of accomplishment. I am so pleased for you, Jonathan. A total rewiring is wise, as you said; and not hard (for you), and i am glad you will be doing it. Seeing you figure out what the real issues are is always a treat. Hearing about the "dead-heading" of hydraulic pistons is a lesson we all can use to keep equipment right. "Beat on the man, but never the equipment." || Why do i think you could take parts and pieces you have on hand to fabricate an impressive night time LED lighting system with sufficient charging capacity and battery storage so it will be there when you need/want it, without much expense... if only you could find time to get around to it?*
I remember starters on machines with wet clutches years ago.. They had seals in them and a rubber seal inside of the solenoid....Nice to be able to shoot by your home.. If I could, I would be broke all the time.. lol.. I have to drive 35 mi one way to target practice.. Cheers; Mike in Louisiana
Another Case Tractor back in service. Nice, not sure which engine that is. I do know that case used the twelve valve cummins on a lot of equipment but that one doesn't look like one from five thousand miles away meaning it just might be one for all I know. I know Case was smart enough to not over power their units and break valuable parts. Glad to see going and kinda wonder how come you haven't traded for a hose crimping tool other that the cost of fittings and hoses as that stuff is gold. I just figure with all the hoses that you encounter, it would be so handy to have... and then you may have one and not chose to use it either. I worked on them a lot in the dozer configuration. Good machines
I work at a Deere dealer as a Tech. We see some really beat up things. Had a subcompact come in with 15 hours on the meter and the steering was messed up, the trans was leaking, and the paint was all scratched. It looked like it had 1200 hours or more. That case isn’t in that bad of shape for its age and considering how things like that are used.
She's a good little machine for a $1500.00 bill! Give her some guages and fix up the starting and charging, upholster yourself a seat cushion and you ought not to have to do anything more for a long while. Just right for what you got going on. Hook a chain in the bucket and then you got another self propelled hoist. Right fine machine 👌

Funny how these old cars, trucks, and implements seem to come back to life when the “machine whisperer” (Jonathan) lays hands upon them.
It's really the cat the whispers them back to life. Jonathan is just there to wrench according to the cat's will. Nana Rules!
Yes, he has the knowledge, the know how, but not the budget, so things get repaired rather than ring for a new part.
He's THE MAN!
@@waynegouin939 Correct!

best neighbors to have
That new starter let it sound like a brand new tractor starting,

I know you hear it a lot but man you are one hell of a mechanic. Great job once again!

I was wondering when one of your dogs would make it back into a video can't beat having man's best friend around. Good deal on the backhoe with a little bit of work you have a good working machine.

Nice fix on the oil leak.
Great trade. Glad you have it running so well for so little $.
Would like to see it in action!
*$1500 in toto ! ! ! Wow.*
Nice fix and much easier than splitting it.

Well your just a Jack of all trades! I'm very impressed on the knowledge you have, I enjoy watching what ever you work on.😊
That thing started right up. CAN'T BEAT THAT! Very handy machine to have around! Thanks for the video!

What a difference that new starter made. Love the older stuff. Thanks for sharing.
That starter appears to the be the same one I just put in my 1988 Ford F250 7.3 IDI diesel pickup.

Case makes a good machine! 🙂👍 Great video Jonathan. Glad you got it going
That tractor runs real good. Nice old unit. Very handy to have one of those around.
Jonathan's Flivver Company strikes again. You got yourself a very nice very functional machine there.
Another Jonathan W video is just the thing to take my mind off of this 94 degree heat. He's probably done this so many times it's all muscle memory.
good job on that backhoe you sure know how to get good deals thanks for sharing that video

Man,I'm loving this multiple videos in a two day period, good job on the backhoe Johnathan, you have the best videos imo.
nice work Jonathan ,,,tractors looking good ,and what you paid is a great price ,thanks for posting ...stay safe out there
58.000.00 Bill. Starting price. All said and done 65.000.00
I learn a ton from your channel
Hi Jonathan. 580 Case is a nice machine. Glad you got it. It will be super handy. Nice video.

That's about the newest thing you've worked on in a while. That will be very a useful piece of equipment for you. Keep up the great work.
Sounds really healthy. It should make for a good machine.
Jonathan, you're always on the go...You always get those problems figured out and fixed!!!
STAY HEALTHY!!!!
Wow! Nice when things go the right direction. Whether you keep it or sell it this was a winner.
Good advice, I had never thought through. a blown hose is a bummer for at least a half a day, including travel time.
I work at a Deere dealer as a Tech. We see some really beat up things. Man I'm sure you're relieved you don't have to separate the machine! Good deal on it! Runs great!
Great job Jonathan!
Good to see the Case is doing its job for you.
Great tip on pressure relief valve and old hoses, that’ll sure give more miles on the hoses before they break
Agreed, 2tanna22.
Good job Jonathan, my dog does that same thing when my neighbors shoot or it thunders, as always thank you for your videos.
Love that sound of freedom !!!!
I don't deadhead the cylinders either and I also never leave a load on them either to keep pressure off the seals.
Jonathan about time for another fishing video, ifs it's not to hot!
Good repair. Great advice. Looking forward to your next video.
Really enjoyed the video. I appreciate your approach on problem solving.
Thanks for the Video Jonathan.
I probably won't be on for a bit...
We've had to put dad into hospice

I like your german shepherd ... I like all dogs
1500 in that machine is golden. I sure do need one around my place.
Great deal on the backhoe ❤. Fix the wiring and service it, then put it to work ❤.
Jonathan, do you EVER sleep?
I think the same that jonathann never gets any sleep. I sometimes think he might have a twin or triplet out there to do so many things that I love watching .
Great video, Jonathan. Your ability to fix nearly anything is amazing. I love to watch.
Johnathan is a neighbor I'd like to live near
I used to work on air cylinders and they are simple and a bear.
I'd call that backhoe a win for Jonathan! Good job!
Some other fella said to replace the blown hose and one other hose that looks to be the next to go. Ounce of prevention = A dozen and four of cure.
You really got lucky with that one
You are a very lucky man Johnathan with the engines and equipment you get.an I think you should put a bit more detail in your show but that is just my opinion so have a blessed day
Good sounding motor!! Good vid 🖒🖒
Definitely a new shut off cable, I got stuck on a hydrostat once, the steering was stuck, I was trying to diagnose the that, when I got it fired it was also stuck in forward, wouldn’t steer and the shut off cable broke on me, I was dumb and working alone, luckily the owner came out in 10 minutes and shut it down for me. He forgot to tell me about all the other issues, then didn’t want to pay me anything. Cheap lesson for me
Hi Jonathan, Good to see you working on the Backhoe, just interested on what type of gun your neighbor has must be a repeater as it went for some time . Look forward in seeing you use it on that tree removal.
*Many will know what kind of rifle it was just by the sound, but not me.*
my dog dose the same thing when he here's any kind of bangs !!!
*Rifle shots are supper hard on most dog's ears. Most upland game bird dogs have ears that flop over just because of this issue.*
My yellow lab don't like it either
