This is a parody of Ylvis' "What Does the Fox Say" by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), mostly from Massachusetts. Shot on location at Framingham Friends Meeting, Homer's Cause, and the Middlesex Fells.
The original quotations of George Fox, with context and links to sources, are at:

And, by request, these are the subtitles:
1650s England
Kingless country
Civil war
Dudes in robes
the only way
to communicate with God
All pay tithes
And all take oaths
Churches full of empty forms
A shoemaker
begins to preach
What does George Fox say?
"I saw that there was an ocean of death,
but flowing over it was
an infinite ocean of love."
What's George Fox say?
"Be patterns and be examples
in all countries, places, and nations,
wherever you go."
What's George Fox say?
"Be still and cool
in your own mind and spirit
and you will feel the principle of God."
What's George Fox say?
"I heard a voice, which said,
'Jesus Christ can speak to your condition.'
When I heard it, my heart did leap for joy."
What's George Fox say?
Shaggy hair
Leather clothes
He comes for prayer
then he steps on toes
He cannot stand
Bad theology
He serves a jail term or three
His jailers rise
and follow him
He's an angel in disguise
His piercing eyes
see your course
cause he's connecting to his
So-o-o-o-ource,
So-o-o-o-ource,
So-o-o-o-ource.
He's connecting to his
So-o-o-o-ource,
So-o-o-o-ource,
So-o-o-o-ource.
What does George Fox say?
"The Lord does not dwell
in these man-made temples
but rather in people's hearts."
What's George Fox say?
"Christ says this,
and the apostles say that,
but what can you say?"
What's George Fox say?
"Walk cheerfully over the world,
answering that of God
in everyone."
What's George Fox say?
(silence)
What does George Fox say?
The insight of George Fox
was that the Spirit can guide us
It talks in a still small voice
of Love and Truth
What do you hear?
Will you keep yourself open
to peace and integrity?
What do you hear?
You have a guardian Angel
hiding in your soul
What do you hear?
What do you hear?
I want to
I want to
I want to know! Кино
This is what happens at meeting. All the time.
hugoestr This Friend speaks my mind.
Wow you're meeting sounds fun :-) Doesn't happen very much at my meeting.
Spoke to my condition
I LOVED this! I attended Silent Meeting for years at Farm & Wilderness Camps in VT and when the hands were shaken at the end... I teared up! I love Silent Meeting and miss it!
Who says we Quakers don't have a sense of humor! Love this!
I'm a Quaker, and I have experienced people singing in unprogrammed Meeting for Worship, but never like this! This was a great video and a credit to the people who made it. Well done!
This George Fox University student approves of this video. Nice job Friends!
I love it. Well done. "A still, small voice..." is one of my favorite quotes.
Abington Meeting played this at the closing of this year's First-Day School today. I was truly moved--emotionally and physically. Thank thee!
This is very cute and informative. I do like the tune and how it was adapted. A cleaver medium to introduce some of us to the Quakers, which I admit did not know were still active, much less in my own community. My ancestors were Quakers and came to America through Chester, PA. It is only through a conversation with a Quaker that I came upon this video. I had taken notes and finally followed-up. I didn't even know who George Fox was. God bless us all!
Thanks, Vicki! Glad to connect you to your roots. And, yes, God bless us all!
This is epic. ❤😂 I am still learning more about GF and the Quakers, as a non-denominational Christian. But I love what I know about him. I just think it's important to also look to Jesus first and foremost, not to look to other saints over Christ and God's inspired word. But to be inspired by other saints is good if tempered.
I recently found sources that claim he did not care for the Word. This seems repeatedly proven to be false, one of the main ways we can become closer to Jesus is through the Word. He was the living word and the holy spirit lives in us. But we also look to His Word as he asks us to.
Also worth looking into; Karaite Judaism. If I knew of a Messianic Karaite Synagogue I'd definitely seek out fellowship with them excitedly.
Instead of worshiping as rabbis or preists dictate; we need to consider all of God's word. Sometimes that can come to us individually, and amongst the church of followers. But it's also there in the Bible. 📖 🕊️
I don't belong to any denomination because I'm unsure about belonging to a Synagogue as a gentile. But I also haven't found a church that is agreeable to the Word. We still should observe holy days above the Catholic Paegan days and commercialized superficiality.
My family has been learning to celebrate holy days. They all tie into symbolism of Jesus and Christian faith. After all they were ordered by our God, the same as the Hebrew God.
Jesus' birth and life in Earth in human form is celebrated during Sukkot when he was likely born. Passover, not only about Exodus but the Resurrection (and leading up to and the share and tell after).....
We even celebrate Hannukah not as a holy day but a Biblical historical recognition of God's miracles and the specific example obviously....the Maccabean Revolt of not worshipping falsely. The servant candle symbolic of our duty as Christians. 🕯️
Reformation Day is something we also observe, lightly, as it speaks against the corruption of the divided churches and the sin of using the Word for ones own greed. Seems the Catholic Church created All Hallows Eve and All Saints Day to hide Reformation Day from memory, since the act was against their clergy specifically.
Thank you for reading (and sharing..? 😊) Peace be with you. 🐟 שלום ✝️
My dad used to lead music before meeting when I was a kid. It wasn't quite like this video, but I think he would have enjoyed it.
This is fabulous! Kudos to Ben and everyone who participated.
Brilliantly funny! I loved the subtitles giving the words behind the music rather than the other way round LOL
Insanely good. Couldn't have done it better myself! :)
Thanks, Jon! We definitely took a page from "Friend Speaks My Mind" for the opening.
This is amazing! Great job, Ben.
As a kid, I spent many Sundays at that meetinghouse! Awesome video, and it's nice to see that part of Framingham again.
I'm kind of in the middle of a spiritual crisis. The words of Fox in the video have been very comforting and have given me a greater understanding. Thank you.
Thank you, Martie, for letting me know that this video helped. May you find even more comfort and a way through the crisis.
Quakerism might be a path that can show you to the Light. You should check them out. :)

omg, Linda Jenkins singing during the sleepover, with Will's voice coming out of her mouth, and Jerimiah "sleeping" in the background--so funny!
WONDERFUL! And what fun you must have had putting it together. I think it nicely describes the Friends I have known. I wish we had some thing as clever to explain Unitarian Universalism.
That was really nice. I've always loved the Quakers and have sat with them many times. I was active in AFSC in the 60's and 70's and stood with them in peace vigils. They are the only Christian path that makes any sense to me.
I was born a Quaker over 60 years ago, and have always been an atheist follower of Fox and Jesus and many other prophets like Muste. Yes, this path makes sense to me as well!
Lee Garner I love being a non-theist Friend.

This video is really special. I have known Quakers but had no idea what is was. I wish I could have seen and been open to this video twenty years ago. I love it. I can not wait to go to a friends meeting. Thank You for making this funny video.
+duwbryd Sure thing! I'm glad you liked it! Let me know if you have any difficulty finding a Friends Meeting. Oh, and you might also enjoy: ruclips.net/video/t68hQxh9tqw/видео.html
And here I was trying to put the lyrics of the George Fox song to this tune. Good job!
You, sir, are a genius. Best laugh I've had all day.
(silence)
This is the best thing ever! Yay for Quakers!
Thanks! This was great. it reconnects me with my roots! (The concept & execution were both brilliant. Congratulations to all involved!)
Awesome. So glad that Quakers are getting more exposure on what they represent!
this is why i love being a quaker! xD
Terrific!! A great parody and fun way to spread the word. Congrats to the friends involved!
Well done Ben! Shows you can be a Quaker and not take yourself too seriously!
I think its more cute than funny, and its clear they can have fun with their own history too. I am not a christian, but I have a lot of respect for the Quakers.
I went to a Friends school from pre-6thgrade... This is a fabulous video. Though I wouldn't necessarily call myself a Quaker, I still carry aspects of it in my life and I'm more positive for it :)
SO SO BRILLIANT! Love it so much.
I sent this to my old school alumni! I went to a Quaker/Friends high school. Typical humor for my family~
You guys just made me so very happy.
As I recall my attempts at hulahooping as young Quaker we're not nearly so successful!
This speaks to my mind! Love it!
I'm a Methodist not a Quaker but I loved it and the ideas. And thanks for the subtitles they helped.
Nice spin on a catchy tune. Well done.

Just wonderful!
What a fantastic video. Thanks for making learning about Quakerism FUN!
Will we go back to sitting this close together and shaking hands?
I hope so!
GREAT Job Ben.
I think this is great fun. I'm a Quaker in an 'unprogrammed' type of meeting, which is the one shown here, gathering and sharing in silent communal reflection. There are also Quaker meetings with ministers, but that is not our type. I'm hoping we can all practive the dance moves sometime, maybe after one of our potluck dinners!
This was awesome!
I've seen the video a few times now and enjoy it each time. I do like how it's been done. I did learn a few things, about what George Fox did say, even though I knew a lot about Quakerism already. I do like the Quaker philosophy, as I'm a Unitarian and we share a lot of the same ideals.
I am awaiting approval to be a full fledged Quaker and have been practicing for many years. I guess this appeals to youth. There is so much, however, that cannot be explained.
I love this! It works in so many ways. Like how the Ylvis song asking "dog goes woof and cat goes meow, but what does the fox say?" contrasts with "Christ says this, and the apostles say that, but what can you say?" and at the end of your parody, the subject moves away from the historical deeds and words of George Fox, to the exposition on his insight, which is all about the mysticism, for lack of a better term, of listening for the revelation of the still small voice while the goofy original is about the mystical, presumably unknowable, nature of what the fox has to say. Both songs transition from the known to the unknown, but the absurdity of the original song is the perfect canvas upon which to lay out the profundity of Quakerism and make it pop. The Ylvis song makes me smile, but when I read the profound words of George Fox with the nonsense sounds of the Chorus in the background, I get chills! "The Lord does not dwell in these man-made temples, but rather in people's hearts" Clearly! If this were a mainline protestant church and not a Quaker meetinghouse, the voiced nonsense, the dancing, the techno, the costumes, would all seem far too irreverent. I've listened to this probably 20 times over the last week as it keeps popping up in my queue as I work through all of the Quaker Speak videos. I've just started to realize that unprogrammed, liberal Quakerism, is something that I need in my life. I went to my first meeting for worship on vacation a couple of weeks ago and now I've located a nearby worship group that I hope will speak to my condition. I am also waiting on a book on Quakerism with great anticipation. I can't wait to learn more. I think I've always been a Quaker! I know I'm about 10 years late, but great job!
Thank you so much, Jeffrey! It's wonderful that the video is still speaking to you ten years later!
I hope your time with the local Quakers is fruitful!
This was brilliant!
just... awesome!!
Beautiful.
As a history nerd, I salute you! I just stumbled across this via investigating some Quaker songs in the "faith" section of my giant folk song book. I love that you left the lyrics and quotes in order in the description and will be reading all of them to extract all possible life lessons and laughs. It's always a healthy sign when any religious group can make objectively funny jokes about themselves. If I lived anywhere near Massachusetts, I'd make some attempt to pay you nice folks a visit, which is saying a fair bit, since I'm generally not the church-goer in my family.
Aw, thank you so much, Myra! I am very flattered that you think our jokes are objectively funny!
Is the giant folk song book Rise Up Singing? Just curious. :)
@@benguaraldi Yup. You know it! I love my monthly song circle of happy old hippys. If they wanted to meet weekly for it, I'd host it gladly.
Great I loved it
I want to party with Framingham monthly meeting!
Priceless!
Love it.
Brilliant!!!!!!
Wow, I really love this video, I am so interested in religions and spiriuality, I have taken an interest in this practise and intend to pursue the study of it, and this video get's me excited to do so.
Bravo!
Honestly this seems like something my meeting of friends would do and I love how silly the Quakers are but we still have a cool faith.
How did this not go viral?! It's amazing!!!
Thanks! We were pretty happy with 178,000 views :)
Awesome
Brilliant.
I've even been to the Quaker house and couldn't figure this much out. THANK YOU.
We were trying to make it accessible to all, but seems that some folks are still having trouble understanding it. If you're interested, you might want to strike up a conversation with a Quaker in person or on Facebook--they'll be happy to explain the video to you or refer you to other folks who can. Thanks for watching!
Ben Guaraldi
nono! It was great!
Made my day :)
This is the kind of church I would go to.
Well Done!!
Some folks have requested permission to show "What Does George Fox Say", which I hereby happily grant. If you would like to download it, you can do so easily from Vimeo: vimeo.com/83549436
Joe Edelman You bet! She's petting the fox in the Quaker meeting and then she's the purple dinosaur in one of the dance scenes.
Marvelous
Thank you!
perfection
Well done, folks!
well done! Yay!
lots of fun - very good
...that's enough internet for today lol
Jokes aside, this is hilarious and informative! Well done, sir
Well isn't this lovely and and funny and warm and gorgeous! More evidence that Quakers rock.
I guess Quaker parody music videos are becoming a thing. Quaker? Maybe!
love you guys!!! shoutout to kieran and hel... #quakersforever
Very cool! Not a lot of Quaker media... But this definitely tops!
I love that they're playing wink 'em :)
yea! !
Nice.
I love this video. The sentiments are right on, but the images form a wonderful counterpoint to the words. There is an ecstatic wonderful side to the love of God which is beyond reason and rationality!
I've always had a soft spot for the Religious Society of Friends. If I weren't Jewish, I'd be a Quaker.
I wish they did one for Menno Simmons.
Either way friend, good work on the video :)
Approximately the same happened in reality in 1875 when American Quakers dared to start singing songs during their meetings for worship.
Singing, dancing... Where will it end, I ask, where will it end?
Thanks for subtitling this so I can enjoy it. Friends are one of few Christian religions I have profound respect for.
Lol I love this
Two things: first, that was BRILLIANT! Content + comedy is really hard to pull off and you did a great job. Second, at 1:05 are you guys playing Wink? That is a favorite game at UU youth cons and I was wondering if you had something similar?
UUs and Quakers have a lot in common these days. Yes it is wink.
Yes, it's the same game. Most Quakers call it Wink, but in New England, we call it Winkum. I love that game!
Thanks god for creating quakers.
A nice way in...
Better than the original.
Aw, thanks! It certainly wouldn't exist without Ylvis' genius, though!
Isn't that Sue from Fast N' Loud in the background?
No, it isn't. Thanks for watching, though!
Can you all put the quotes you used into the Description? That would be awesome.
They're in the description now, with the other subtitles. As teamcrumb points out, the original quotes with context and links are at: benguaraldi.com/filmmaking/georgefox-quotations.php
Oh man! I´m so sad I haven´t seen this righteous rockin´ brilliance before now! Official UU here and wild-eyed interfaith Christian who dropped in at Long Island and NYC meetings a few times, having been to Philly where I picked up a killer Quaker Friend history that was selected first round for my move to Brazil. Oh, let me not neglect to mention the local meeting in distant rural Kenya! I´ve made a habit of referring with some righteous frequency to him and his protege, including Greenpeace and Oxfam, as I have become "epiphanitically" activated and going for Jim Wallis´ Sojo.net and more. Love you guys! What Does George Fox Say?
Thanks so much for watching-I'm glad you enjoyed it! Which Quaker meeting in rural Kenya? I bet we have some Friends in common :)
@@benguaraldi Hey, man! This is now in my utility belt! I was at Namang´ofulo, near Sirisia and bigger cities Bungoma and Kakamega. I believe my star student Emily was a Friend there, but that was 1988. You? As for Long Island (and Manhattan), it was too little context and opportunity to get names. I went to a Wellesley summer camp Explo, and Harvard U, as well, to multiply the possibilities!
@@robinhoodstfrancis Cool! I think the closest I traveled to Sirisia was Lugulu Hospital, back in 2005 and 2012. I still can't believe the number of Quakers there were there!
...so who quakes now? I love this video. Maybe I'll do one about the Plymouth Brethren assembly i grew up in, tee-hee.
David Crellin I love people who say tee hee.
oy!
This is the funniest video I've ever seen but who the hell is George fox?
Glad you liked it!
Here's a little background on George Fox if you want to dig deeper than the song:

Enjoy!
There are wrong lyrics after what does the george fox say
best. comment. ever. I love the internet.
¡¡¡ PERO ESTO QUE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEES,,,!!!!
Very funny. Which Meeting produced this?
Thanks, Jenifer. This was made by about 30 Friends (and a few non-Quakers) from around Salem Quarterly Meeting, which is part of New England Yearly Meeting. The use of the meetinghouse was graciously donated by Framingham Friends Meeting, in Massachusetts.
Ben Guaraldi New England has the most beautiful fall colors.
ha ha ha, the video is actually very funny! watch it all!
Aw, thank you so much!
Vimeo is nice. Is the commercial about "bad food" really necessary?
Thanks! Unfortunately, we cannot remove the ads-they are placed there by Ylvis, who created the original song "What Does the Fox Say"
