WALDORF = MAGIC!!! be patient and wait for the sound designers play with it.... Waldorf synthesis is deep and unique...
Wow! Finally! This is the exact synth I was hoping someone (especially Waldorf) would make! And it's basically the synth I've been slowly building in Eurorack; a Wavetable, Granular, Resonator synth. Being that this one is from my favorite synth company, I'm sold! Now to start saving...
Looking back at it all now, and finally having the Quantum in my hands these past two weeks, my dreams have come true! Well worth the wait!
I love it, that the sound Iam looking for, but I don't have that kind of loot, you dig.
@@williammcconnell800 they have recently come out with a smaller budget desktop model called the "Waldorf Iridium Core" with all the same sound and features... but it's still kind of expensive. And if I had to do it again today, I couldn't afford it anymore either. Things have been rough since the pandemic took all of my gig work away...
Finally some novel design in the synth space. Patches are a bit pants, but excited to see what people can do with this.
yeah I hope they don't load it with the classic Waldorf craptches and get some external patch designers onboard.. like Nick!
I agree. It has lots of potential but if I got it I would be looking for the global patch wipe key.
I like it when the presets are pants: CTL-A + Delete!
Yeah, this is what we should expect of a cutting edge synth of our era. Let's keep fingers crossed and hope fir the best.
This company is really improving their support and reliability since the early days of the Blo. Kudos.
Uh-huh... Delete everything so you have no idea about how it could sound potentially and make a ton of your own pantsy patches...
Seriously. Good patches are always nice to have. At least if you're into making music and not just dicking around with synths.
Wow, great work Waldorf. Had a Q many years ago, and it had its own unique quality. This is definitely an evolution, sounds incredible and still has personality.
Proper fucking synth! Well done Waldorf, get this to market.
Waldorf, any idea if this will come in a desktop form as well (Sans keyboard)? Fantastic work! Super Idee und fantastische arbeit! Ich kann es kaum abwarten!
Wow! Well done Waldorf!
Great to see something new.
So many pots and buttons...so much love.
It's reassuring that the first chord played on this thing made me think of the Neuron, and near the end of the video Axel drops by. It's less reassuring that when I say I would give my other kidney for this, I really mean it.
edit: not the first one, but the first one that stood out to me
Very happy to see this! This gives me hope for more Waldorf products for the next decade!! Very exciting!
Looks like Waldorf accomplished what Roland was trying with the JD-XA
I'm a Waldorf fan, but no, the JD-XA is something entirely different and quite amazing, and at half the price.
That's cool to hear something positive about the JD-XA. I had heard a lot negative. What do you like about the JD-XA and what do you see as the main differences between that and the Waldorf?
It has 4 separate (multtimbral/poly/stacked) analogue synth voices (fully analogue from the oscillators to the output). It has 64 voices of quite good digital Integra-type voices. The digital voices can modulate the analogue ones and be passed through them. It's pretty nifty and sounds very good. But yeah, a different thing.
Of course, as a Waldorf fan (Q-owner), this new Quantum looks to be killer. A proper follow up to the still impressive Q. I want one :)
Thanks for the info. You may be the first ACTUAL owner of a JD-XA I've read comments from. :-)
I don't own a JD-XA myself (yet!), but a mate of mine does. I've also researched it to bits, including reading numerous owners impressions and listened to tons of demos, and it'll likely find its way into my rig based on the sound and architecture. So many cool synths, so little money.... :))
I really like how this synthesizer is so clear and logical designed in the user-interface. I think It will be impossible for me to test one live since the local shops will never add this as a demo for the price-tag. I think this will be a keeper for the enthusiast.
Looks like an amazing synth, glad to see Waldorf launching another proper flagship. I still love the Q. I feel like it's let down a little by the dreaded preset march, surely Rolf could entertain us with any number of technical details or even development stories and convey more about the unique qualities of this instrument.
Get me this, a pot of tea, some biscuits and you'll find me in sound design heaven.
Just some tea and biscuits?
knut olson won't have need for any other distractions 😄
Get me this and you won't find me ^_^
This is extremely well packed machine. Good done Waldorf !Must have no doubt.
makes me want to go to musikmesse immediately and buy it right away. finally an interesting new synth
Sounds like a heavy weight entry. Fantastic tonal variety. If they hit that 3k mark, this will grab market. Nice stuff!
user wavetables? all the blofeld wavetables? osc FM? cross mod? i need answers - gah!!!!
You can sample your own wavetables.
The Interface design is pretty cool. The colour coding seems very usefull.
An incredibly exciting synth, amazing possibilities!
Wow. Very impressive spec. Can't wait for the review.. hopefully this year :)
Would love to get my hands on this for patch making...
waiting for the Jexus demo
...of anything...
This looks like great fun for the sound designer. I like the idea of audio in with sampling to wave tables or to the granular sampler. Keep in mind the price of a new Q or Q+ Keyboard back in the day. I have a Phoenix version.
Let's see that percussion synth going in the background!
PLEASE put a matte screen on it, not a glossy one!
Glossy screens are evil, sat there waiting for that stage light to ruin your day.
a matte screen with non-colored menus would have really taken the aesthetic of this synth up a level.
they need to invent fingerprint free glossy screens
Looks and sounds fabulous. Something close to Omnisphere in hardware form!
Great to see a new Waldorf flagship synth arrive!
Superb layout on this thing.
That synth was occupied with fans all the time, I could never get near to play it. Thanks for the video!
Looks incredible...
Now this, looks as good as it sounds!
I find it interesting that some people already seem to know everything about this synth. Especialy all its shortcuts, allthough its programing is not finished yet and it it is not even on the market. Somebody even knows it sounds shit after hearing it through his computer speakers? I would bet these are the guys that are frustrated because they never got something reasonably sounding out of there XTs. I allways tell my students: Don' t believe in Forums of any kind, these guys have time for writing, so they don't have gigs. Same here, it will be a fantastic synth, mine is slready on the workbench and you trolls will not be able to afford ionr
Manfred Knauthe yeah I feel your pain, people complaining about a touch-screen. First world problems.
Manfred Knauthe "their"
how does it feel to be the smart asshole in the youtube synth world? you're fuckin legendary dude cheers
Well, here I sit with a Korg Oasys which was the worlds most expensive synth. Tell me why I need this synth again?
@hedegaard8 worlds' most expensive synth!? I guess you must be pretty new to synths then and/or haven't been around many of them. I think at the time the most expensive version of the Korg Oasys was $8000, which is nothing compared to the Waldorf Wave, which was $10,000 at the time of their release, or the Fairlight CMI which was $30,000 to $75,000 at the time of their release, or the Synclavier which was between $20,000 to $200,000 depending on the chosen options! But what does the price of a synth have to do with anything? Even though the Oasys is a great synth, there are still things the Quantum can do that Oasys can not. Still, doesn't matter, you should use what feels/sounds best to you.
I like it, it may end up in my studio! It's been years since I bought anything besides Roland, so let's see how it goes....
The one who writes best Waldorf poem gets 10% discount.
Substracting from multimodes
Add some sin with sines,
Modulate frequency roads
Resonate noisy grains.
Attack me with your entry,
Decay while I last,
Sustain like a sentry,
Release not so fast.
Very long we had wait in Q,
then joyful Pulse we have felt,
Wave to something that is new,
that surpasses our Blofeld.
Will you steal my voices?
Answer before I fell the GAS,
Let me try your interface,
Drop some fine funky bass,
Or just modulate the pulse width,
Right from the main pane
For the mix will you fit?
! Of course, Waldorf is thy name
I could continue on and on,
but that does not bring the rest
90% of the money like a loan
that would put my sanity to test.
Quantum his name certainly matches,
one synth to rule (and complement) them all,
Also with Don Solaris' patches,
that would make those sound barriers fall.
Roses Are Red... Violets are Blue...uhhhh.....
...
NICK BATT FOR PRESIDENT!!
I once owned a Microwave,
And now own a Q,
I really want this Quantum,
So seriously, f*ck you!
tell me you are making presets for this?
MIDI doesn't seem to sync
LFOs are on the blink
Multimode resets the box
Encoders jump around a lot
If it ships I hope they fix
The OS sent out with the kit

lol waldorf. looks good though, I'm glad they decided to do their take on something like Sledge
It looks amazing and sounds successive for all genres. I would dream to buy it if it does not slow down on the screen interface.
That interface feature starting at 13:40 was a nice. I wish more software developers presented interfaces like this rather than model old units exactly. I'm hoping they will once they've run out of classic hardware to model ;)
i actually have some input that id like to share with waldorf that will save them millions and also mak them millions as well. i ve been studying sound for some time now. this could be a major break through, and it would be grat to have waldorf behind the plan.
curious to see how much, if any, of the Microwave engine has made its way into this. Waldorf has done a good job of keeping the sound of the Pulse and the Q series alive, but Nave and their other wavetable products have never really been successful IMO of recapturing that wavetable synthesis character they used to be so famous for. My guess is its the filters.
finally a hybrid synth with innovative features :)
None of the demos on internet sounds so special. I do not own it, of course, but I listen...
Great synth. Hope it will be out soon.
Now I have one, and it’s even better than i thought! ❤️
I wonder if this time they manage to make the arpeggiator sync properly with a DAW. I sold my Blofeld because that never worked although there were several software updates where they claimed to have it fixed.
Only paying attention to what looks like two Fender Rhodes reissues in the distance.
I was going to get something from DSI but I might make an exception and go digital this time for this.
This synth looks like it will be absolutely awesome 👏
It's a truly flagschiff instrument. I like that ;) and given all oscillator and modulation features I believe it actually will be a 21st century flagship, leaving all stuff that is imitating each other with a subtractive synthesis option only behind where it belongs, in the 20st century.
Of course I'll always keep the Microwave 1 in my rack though :D
finally something truly new
so i could have something like mutable's clouds and elements with the granulizer and resonator, respectively, as well as sweeping a wavetable.. or just have 3 sweeping wavetables? welcome back to the big time, waldorf!
instead of the 1024 presets like on the blofeld and only a third being useable, spend some time making really really good ones.
Seems like the most interesting new hardware synth since the Neuron and Solaris.
Seems like an amazing futuristic synth beast brimming with tons of creative possibilities and an fantastic interface. It a hefty amount of cash but It's a beautiful technological modern beast! How about we call it €2000 and it's a deal? Aren't Waldorf quite bad for updating synths and leaving bugs?
I like this new synthesizer!! HAVING SAID THAT...
NICK BATT FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!
Waaaayy outta my price range but my inner Waldorf fan is GASing for this! *Seems* to me like it could be a cross between Nave & Alchemy but in hardware - very interested in seeing where this goes - Waldorf, if you need a sound-designer hit me up!
Thanks for the vid Edd - enjoy the show!
sorry about the typos. but some one from GmbH should contact me for schematics and etc. its for a tablet design. so cost in size already reduced but what is generating the sound is really where they will save and make even more with the holy grail
This looks to be amazing. Hopefully they can get a nice GUI designed that is responsive and snappy. Right now its response is looking a little sluggish.
Holy shit, this is a beast. Take my money! Love WALDORF!
I wonder this new synth will be able to make sounds and beats to create the styles of Techno, House and Trance?
Sure it can like most other synths.
I think I'm in love!!
I hope it comes in a classic wild Waldorfian color when it's released.
Im voting for the baby shit green color they used for the limited Microwave 'Green Machine' version..
With a display that large, one could include a multitimbral sequencer. But that synth looks interesting anyway. ;)
I personally love Waldorf. The Blofeld was (and still is) my first synth and I love its sound and whole Waldorf philosophy. This machine looks interesting (granular and resonate engine are extremely interesting) and the possibility to sample trough the audio in is awesome. But 3.000€? I'm afraid it's a bit too expensive even for a "made in Germany" synth. With 3K we are in the Prophet 6 territory not really a weak opponent.
You are comparing apples and oranges. This synth does far more than any DSI synth (and I like DSI synths) and is more of a rival of the Modal stuff... so I am actually surprised it won't be in the $4000-$5000 range. Waldorf's previous flagship synths like the Q were up there. Remember, this has FOUR synth engines per Oscillator... so 3 oscillators where you can assign either the Analog, Wavetable, Particle or Resonator engine, plus the beautiful design, touchscreen, etc.... and you think this doesn't stack up against the Prophet 6!? (which is just another old and tired rehash from DSI.)
Maybe I wasn't clear with my opinion, I didn't want to compare the two synths, actually I (as many other already pointed out) love this jump forward in synth design and I didn't want to say the 3K is to much (which is actually a good price for a boutique synth); what I really wanted to say was: ok, I have 3K o spend on a synth, what should I buy?
I said the prophet because it was the first one that came in my mind...
That makes sense.
Well, Blofeld and Q user here.
I was hoping he'd say 2500, but now that you remind me if the Made in Germany part (with Asian parts of course like chips etc) I think the price is quite logical, specially for the release. If they don't go well over 3000 I'll consider a loan. Really.
Dave Smith makes great synths, but the comparison isn't the same at all.
I think the synth could maybe be compared to a Modal 002, or a John Bowen Solaris. But both of those have unique features of their own I'm not sure the Quantum has, and vice-versa. Time will tell.
A better comparison would be to say this appears to have aspects of the Blofeld, Q and XT all built into it, plus a bit more.
Will this year see a Messe of poly synths?
I like that granular is making its way out, but 3 grand is too much for such a niche thing, my impression is I see an Alesis Ion version 3
A niche product is always more expensive than a mass product, think about it.
And if anything, this would be the
Wave->Q->Blofeld evolution.
They started this concept in the 80s
Id say its more like Wave->Microwave+Q->Blofeld. ;) The Q has two "Alt" wavetables like the Micro Q, but it was really aimed at being a typical virtual analog. It couldn't hold a candle to the Microwave series for wavetables. The Blofeld is an awesome combination of the two on crack. This new one throws Nave into the mix with em too. Waldorf's always way ahead of the game.
It is much, much more than that. Granular and Resonator add a huge palette, it's like a sprinkling of fairydust.
It might be niche due to the price, and being hardware in a software world, but this synth will cover a lot of bases. It will do VA duties along with the usual wavetables and then all the additional stuff. This seems to be the most powerful PPG descendent to date. And PPG family synths are pretty popular. No idea how this will sell, but if the software is stable, and it delivers on it's main promises, I would not mind one.
I told myself that my matrixbrute would be the last synth I got this year :(
To justify (to me) the pricey nature of this ( I expect it to be pricey,) it would have to really nail the particle (granular) oscillator feature. Otherwise the Blofeld seems adequate ( it has it's issues, but I expect the quantum will as well, given Waldorf's track record :) It's very pretty though. And interesting.
wow this synth looks amazing!
Digital oscillators with analog filters... reminds me of the Q+... but doesn't sound as good to me. But I will hold out hope, the Q+ is one of the greatest synths I ever played, but never owned one.
HOLY MOLY
Nice design Waldorf!
Please release it for real. I want one baaad. I hear a lot of potential even with the dry sound. Add Ben Crosland and Rob Papen to sound designer list too btw.
Looks and sounds awesome, but they can keep the touch screen. That would lower the price, and be one less thing that could break.
I agree
I rather have a couple of Blofeld like screens. Solid, reliable, as opposed to fancy.
Javi G My thoughts exactly. I could understand if it had limited front panel knobs/buttons, but it doesn't. Seems like it's a feature for features' sake.
5" touch screens are about a hundred dollars, and connects via a serial interface, its not going to shave that much from the price.
JKC40 Interesting, thanks for the info. I personally don't think it seems very useful, but I would still like to see somebody do an in depth run through of its functionality.
from using one on my M3, they are useful as long as they are responsive, they are most helpful for flipping through pages for the deeper functions
Looks awesome
Good to see something new that isn't a clone of something from 30+ years ago.
Absolut obergeile Supermaschine. Hab ich jahrelang darauf gewartet. Gibt es nix zu meckern, für mich wenigstens. Einfach traumhaft. Seit ich ihn beim Händler unter den Fingern hatte, denk ich täglich, die Lieferzeit möge kurz sein. 🔝 🥇 🏆
sexy looks ! but could it compare virus or dsi ?
How many wois's does it have again?
that touch screen looks realy useful!
I hope they get 10K each if they can, the market bless them. However, for my pocket, I would do 3K for such a beast.
Hmmm, this or the Prophet 12? Different instruments, sure, but they're both fully-featured, hybrid polysynths.
If you think P12 is shit, you'll very likely find the Quantum similar also. Personally I don't think the P6 is shit, but rather boring. The P12 and the quantum are essentially different from each other but they have in common that they both go beyond the traditional and most imitated synth architectures with alternate wave forms, modulations and effects. If you find a mature, professional non-trivial architecture shit then I see no problem in that for you. There are so many non-shit offers around these days that will make you sound just like everybody else.
I like my P12 very much. Can't say much bad about it.
Lots of potential, but so far I'm a bit underwhelmed by the sound. At 3000 something it's not on my shopping list, but I'm still curious to hear this thing being taken for a proper test drive. I fear that the analog filters will sound a bit clinical like the Q...
what is this two row of dip connector on the back? and what is this black monster in the background what the guys just installed?
Looks like a debug/programmer port to me, being a prototype and all.
I hope this will stay on it :) just for the hacker idiots like me...
I kind of wish they just made a bigger blofeld with more knobs, not a workstation-LCD synth. This is going to be monstrously expensive.
Yep. Its what I would expect from an expensive plugin............but its a physical instrument !
Very cool bit of hardware .
good looking board !
Thats a Nice Synth/sampler ..
We need to hear more. It’s been quiet for far too long. I’m intrigued, but struggling to see how a Blofeld with analog filters and granular engine is worth $4K.
Keep the screen and granular engine, give me one set of analog VCFs, and then a bunch of digital filters, charge me $2K, and I’m in.
Wow, impressive! Waldorf seems seriously listen to synth users. Well done :-D
That interface is beautiful. I would love to touch and turn those knobs. (lol)
Yes, presets suck, but its still in its infancy. I know. Price will be $1799-$2499 when it comes out.
That would be a dream come true
Talking: here we have an innovative synth
Playing: here we have some traditional sounds
*_*
New Dream Machine 👍
probably another piece of semi-vaporware, like the zarenbourg module or its editor before it.
Oh yeah!
what a beast!
Please don't be rushed, please don't have slippery and skipping encoders.
agree with that! They need to do a lot better than the Blofeld. For 3k, they should be able to buy excellent encoders. And one hopes their software is excellent - that's always the issue with these smaller companies - that they will release it, and sofware will have bugs and they won't dedicate the necessary budget and personnel to fix the issues, and add some aftermarket new features to it ( for free!)
Basically what waldorf need to do is the wave / microwave 1 synth with analog filters and standard editing functions (i.e.knobs) and a realistic price normal people can afford and people will buy shit loads. Simple- Isn't it?
Looks like the new V-Synth!
pcuimac this sounds nicer to me
I have some of the best analog sounding patches on my V-Synth XT. Sounds pretty good to me, as does this Waldorf baby.
pcuimac have the keyboard version myself, it is good but sometimes I'm just not crazy about the sound.
Underwhelming preliminary demo sounds aside, If they managed to stuff the equivalent of a Hartmann Neuron into the particle/granular synthesis generator, I'd be all over it.
I'll have mine with a lift up panel or screen ( glare free ) and in white please Waldorf ! :)
