Extraordinary! Bobby's capacity to sing all the notes from the Bach prelude #1 is amazing, particularly transitioning among chords like Am/F, F#dim7, etc. Also, his smile and the way he engages the audience is so delightful.
I love how this guy comes out in in a tee-shirt and jeans and big hair, and starts a beautiful ave maria without instruments, that makes the crowd sing together. Conclusion: Less is more.
I think Bobby McFerrin is the human incarnation of music. Lot's of people can make music, but he perfectly embodies the whimsy, beauty, and emotion that exists behind true music.
I love the power he has over the audience and/or respect the audience has for him. He sings a little, and during a pause, the audience starts to cheer, but he holds up a hand, and they shut the hell up. :)
Michael Pieruccini You saying this is proof positive that you aren't even remotely close to being able to do this. Truth be told, the closer one gets to this amount of talent, the farther away it truly seems.
Michael Pieruccini Sure thing man. Not sure why you are so angry brother, but you definitely just straight deflected what I said. But anyway, per your request: Your original statement precludes you from possibly having musical talent.
I'm not angry. What I'm trying to say is that it's likely a skill, not a talent. Something that he worked for and practiced, an was not born with. Sorry if it seemed like I was using a negative tone, but I'm saying something positive about him; that he was probably not born with this ability but achieved it himself.
this is so beautiful...people not knowing each other but one in common; for love of music...which brought them together to work as one. Absolutely WOW...love it
NYCBG How can you not believe in the Creator of all things created when you experience something as beautiful as this? Look around you. Does all this beautiful world exist just “because?” God is the first Cause. God is 1000% GOOD. Evil and ugliness in the world was not God’s invention. God gave His highest invention free will. Man freely chose evil. Man can freely choose good. Just something to think about.
He is absolutely amazing. What he's doing is very hard. McFerrin is amazing and so is Bach and "The Well Tempered Clavier" the work from which this tune was taken out. With it Bach operated a revolution in music, establishing for good the equal temperament tonal system. That is why he is called the father of music.
My old choir teacher showed a lot of Bobby in class and talked about how she had been to shows of his. Music people certainly have a lot of respect for him.
Still say this is brilliant .....Gounod was truly gifted to discover the Bach and add the Ave....McFerrin was amazing to make this accessible to us today. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei....ora pro nobis!
Where ever he goes, he teaches people about music and themselves. I have always loved Bobby Ferrin. As a musician, I can appreciate his talent and teaching abilities.
@JshrBs01 He actually covered a wide repertoire : classical, soul, rock, circle songs... Check out "The Voice" and also his album with Yo-Yo Ma, they're incredible. "Don't Worry Be Happy" is what made him super famous (I believe it was used for the Bush Senior presidential campaign),but this tune isn't his best work (in my opinion), even if it's catchy. He's a also a friendly and decent man, I met him when I was a kid and didn't feel intimidated at all, quite the contrary. ;-)
Bobby McFerrin plays an instrument at a Masters level. That instrument is of course, his voice. He studied for years to develop his unique gifts, and to have someone who obviously knows nothing about music, it's structure, it's nuance, etc... to dismiss this artist with an uninformed question and and even ridiculously simple sum of what he is doing just shows a pathetic lack of education and an even more sorry lack of experience with the arts. He should just stay home and watch TMZ on television. He is so unique with his skills and talents, that I've never heard his equal anywhere at any time.
why do people find this so amazing hes just having the audience sing with him while he sings a simple song that's paractically all humming how 7 million views I just don't get it
Well, his intonation and pitch are incredible, for one. Unlike a piano, the voice is capable of singing between, say, a B and a C, so singing so many arpeggios like that and not going (that I can hear) flat/sharp is quite the feat. Do you play any instruments?
Try singing that Bach prelude part that Bobby's singing, see how well you do. If you think you can hit all those notes without going off-pitch, you're either incredibly gifted or you're tone deaf and just can't hear the difference. It's an amazingly difficult thing for a singer to do that
***** Hey well to be fair he's setting the pitch center, but still incredible. But singing arpeggios like this is stuff we did in my musics theory class last year, very basic. What's incredible is how good he is at it, something simple, in music at least, usually is the hardest to master.
You are right Bruce about the (serious) loss of great music ...see my comment above "you need to seed your audience with savants who know the Gounod!" Have been involved with Flash Mobs doing the Hallelujah Chorus.....what a tragedy/travesty it will be if this miraculous music is lost to Western/World culture
No - just the opposite. It's not the people who make music. It's the more and more musically uneducated audience that can't appreciate the music. This may also impact the musicians who make the music as well...
Bobby McFerrin is a great musician. Listening to this performance you can almost hear the synchronizing the hearts and souls of McFerrin and the audience. Astounding!!
Listened to this in Chamber Choir today and found it absolutely entrancing. I love his voice. I also love that he is so confident with anything he does and that he concentrates so hard on what he's doing but doesn't lose his part. He also is so comfortable with it as well and though I know that's from years of practice, I still hope to have all of those qualities in any aspect of life when I'm older.
Genio. Lo escuche personalmente en Buenos Aires, Argentina el 4 de agosto de 2011. Fue una experiencia inolvidable. Jamas la olvidare. Forme parte de ese coro que canto Ave Maria.
You think this young man is talented? I had the good fortune of knowing his father the first black male to sing major roles at the Metropolitan Opera and classmate of my piano teacher at Chicago Musical College Robert McDowell who told me about him when I was nineteen years old. Look up Baritone Robert McFerrin here on you-tube and you'll receive a good american music history lesson many people in the United States have missing in their education.
Seeing Bobby is a trip. He crowdsources musical ability, and you BECOME a musical instrument. Even if you can't carry a tune and had no formal training, you get sucked in and become a part of it. It's eerie, and amazing!
The best part of Bobby McFerrin's musicality is that he can make entire audiences sing in tune, on time, without having to beg, while silently accompanying them with a background beat. I LOVE BOBBY McFERRIN.
While practicing on the piano I came across this version and although I don't know much about Bobby McFerrin I certainly do appreciate the beauty of this cooperation between an artist and his audience.
performers separate themselves as much as they can possible can when performing, yet Bobby made the audience an integral part of his concert, including the children.
Well I think many people don't know how awesome this man is. His intonation is impeccable, his timing is perfect, he even adds just a little groove and dynanics to the Bach prelude. Love it when he breathes exactly in the right places (he already sung the note which would be there if it was an instrument playing (like piano or organ). He also seems to have perfect pitch. He stays in tune all the time. I love this man!
He uses the crowd as an instrument. And they sound amazing. I bet if you were in that crowd and didn't know the song, like many people there, you would find that you could pull it off working together. Music is love.
Always brings a tear to my eye. Those who did manage to sing the ave maria really must've felt connected through song at that moment. Gotta love the wonders of music
IMPRESIONANTE!!! Grande maestro!
I love how Bobby McFerrin gets his audience involved in the Ave Maria version by Bach. It sounds so beautiful! He is so talented with the many musical improvisations that he makes, plus he also has a beautiful voice as well.
One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen or heard. And I have serious problems with the catholic church. Imagine what that did for the confidence of the audience and their appreciation for making music.
i think that is what people find so amazing about this guy -bobby mcferrin- is that he can get audience participation to make music, even if you're sure you are going to suck at it, its still cool to be apart of the show, instead of just viewing it, it is a different kind of pleasure :)
It's so great that he draws real music aficionados to his concerts. It's the only way you would have so many know the Gounod piece that sits on top, words and all, AND who all can sing it so well. It makes for a magical pairing of performer and audience.
I've been a fan of his for decades, but only recently found out his dad, Robert McFerrin Sr. was a world-class opera singer. There are several videos of him on RUclips.
never heard the microphone played so beautifully in my life
Lol I like that, I'll be stealing that from you and thank you.
Can only guess that he does that to help his timing.......?
@@wayneostler5532 its the samething that rappers do but in a different style
It has to do with the breath and core connectivity, and doesn’t hurt focus either. Full engagement.
I heard that the mic had a cigerett after that
Extraordinary! Bobby's capacity to sing all the notes from the Bach prelude #1 is amazing, particularly transitioning among chords like Am/F, F#dim7, etc. Also, his smile and the way he engages the audience is so delightful.
Prelude in D Vocal
I love how this guy comes out in in a tee-shirt and jeans and big hair, and starts a beautiful ave maria without instruments, that makes the crowd sing together. Conclusion: Less is more.
It turns out that McFerrin IS THE INSTRUMENT in this case! Delightful........
Hearing the audience's voice rising up as he did his part, it was beautiful!! I love it!!
My senses erupted with delight hearing him and the audience preform this prelude.
I think Bobby McFerrin is the human incarnation of music. Lot's of people can make music, but he perfectly embodies the whimsy, beauty, and emotion that exists behind true music.
One of the greatest artists of our time. He is simply amazing with whatever he does.
the concept of people never singing together before thats what makes it remarkable.
How could a person not declare this to be one of the best performances of Ave Maria in all history?
This honest, spontaneous moment of music brought me to tears.. beautiful..
I love the power he has over the audience and/or respect the audience has for him. He sings a little, and during a pause, the audience starts to cheer, but he holds up a hand, and they shut the hell up. :)
Thousands of people, who don't know eachother, working together to create something beautiful.
Faith in humanity: restored!
This literally brought tears to my eyes. Simply amazing.
Eight and a half million views, and that Finnish jazz quintet is kicking themselves that their name isn't more memorable.
lmao
@Doc Kaali I guess not many people watched this video since 2018 'coz its almost 2020 now and still 9.1m views.
YES
He is just so special and wonderful. His talent is definitely God given.
You sure? I'm sure most people could devote to doing that and learn it in a few years.
Michael Pieruccini You saying this is proof positive that you aren't even remotely close to being able to do this. Truth be told, the closer one gets to this amount of talent, the farther away it truly seems.
Can you try to type that again, but with grammar?
Michael Pieruccini Sure thing man. Not sure why you are so angry brother, but you definitely just straight deflected what I said. But anyway, per your request: Your original statement precludes you from possibly having musical talent.

That's why I love youtube. I started with Stevie Wonder Ave Maria and stumbled upon this genius. Now I'm excited to find more vids on this guy
leads me to tears just beautiful
Mr. McFerrin is an artist. As many times as I've viewed this video on my AVE MARIA playlist, I'm always amazed. A very gifted man, indeed.
So beautiful ... can't help the tears in my eyes!
Dear Mr. Mac Ferrin, I was weeping - sitting once in Hamburg in a concert from you -
years ago naturaly ! And I admire the patience you ve ! Ja.
I know this has been around for years. In January 2024 it is still so inspiring. So beautiful. So whatwe need. Thank you Mr. McFerrin
This is te most amazing version that I ever heard of Bach and Gunoud in my life
My favorite part is where he claps for everyone at the end :D So humble, it's incredible
this is so beautiful...people not knowing each other but one in common; for love of music...which brought them together to work as one. Absolutely WOW...love it
ABSOLUTELY BLOODY FANTASTIC
He is Awesome!!! simply amazing!!
Bobby McFerrin, Al Jerrau, Phil Perry... They're just a treasure of this world and for the music.
Well, that changed my day. Thank you, Mr. McFerrin!
Wow!!! He has helped his audience to do what they didn't realize that they could do 1mn earlier!!! Leadership!!! Thanks
Quand les gens s'unieront pour les vrais valeurs, nous serons dans un monde merveilleux et en paix.
wow. pitch perfect.
Wow this was so beautiful it made me cry!
Tears are running down my face....this is beautiful. bless you for poting this.

ditto lol
MisterHardTruth me to. Lmao 😂, I looked up the other guy to haha
@Johnny
Are you for real?
Key and Peele Country Music puts me in traction from laughter every time.
You can definitely hear some professionals leading the audience who can actually sing.
My old choir teacher showed a lot of Bobby in class and talked about how she had been to shows of his. Music people certainly have a lot of respect for him.

Could he even do this any more with a modern crowd that is used to rock/pop/rap/country (with no choral background)?
I'm gonna bet this is at a university, opera house, or similar. There are a lot of good singers in that crowd.
That that video was from 9 years ago (2006).
