I skied w Shane..... I said I couldn't keep up with him, he sent in the most humble fashion; "I don't expect you to keep up, just try your best and see what is possible"
I feel blessed that i got to compete against and ski with legends like Shane Mcconkey, Seth Morrison, Kent Krietler, Doug Combs, and on and on in 93, 94 US Extreme skiing Competition. I blew my knee on backside of Loveland Pass right before 95 Us Extreme, first All MTN Extremes Squaw Valley, and first South American Extremes in Argentina. I got invited to all. Well now at 41 and 4 knee surgeries later, I'll tell you the blone knee was a blessing as we were all pushing the limits then. Then the next year i fell freeclimbing as rockclimbing became my new love and was easy on the knee. Well that fall was 30 ft and cracked my skull, but i survived. So since then those 2 warnings said slow down or you will die. So since then i just do toprope rockclimbing, or very easy lead. Take the early warning with knee and take it easy so you don't go down in ashes or suffer a life of knee pain in your older years. Good luck kid!
Great example of what pushing the limits is and what is possible, how ever great example of not having enough instinct of self preservation. Mad respect for shining a light down both avenues.
I lived with him and his mother between the ages of 10 and 13 she made him sleep in the lower bunk afraid he would sleep walk and fall off! Also Shane was privately a very angry child his mom was always yelling and punishing him for any little thing she could! I had to get the hell out very depressing!!
He died when he was base jumping and his only one of his ski's came off sending him into a spiral movement and he hit the ground before he could pull his chute.

That was the epitome of Shane. He didn't want you to compete. He wanted to find untapped talent in people you don't find elsewhere.
watching shane shred never gets old
Just tore my ACL today. 16 years old. I can't even explain how much Shane inspires me to push it and keep doing what I love to do
